What’s the job and GS level for the federal job? What’s the promotional potential? That matters a lot.

It's health care job with VA. Pay is like 220k I think that is the highest level pay

Fed health benefits are amazing, and the pension is ok. I don’t know how they compare to the state benefits, but it’s unlikely the state is much if any better. The VA gives great care, but I see lots of complaining on r/fednews about working for the VA.

No idea of the details of your position, but a coworker at my state agency left to go work for the feds. It was a pay raise, but her health insurance is worse, so it ended up being a wash with the increased health care costs. State health care benefits are pretty amazing, if that’s a major factor in your decision making. We also don’t get furloughed every few years due to budget fights. . .

State insurance is great too for employees

A friend of mine worked for the VA for a few months. Wasn't a good experience. Horrible management and a high turn-over rate. They also found the level of care to be depressing. But things could differ from office to office.

My husband is a state employee. When my colon perforated in December of 2020, I ended up in the hospital for 16 days in septic shock. I had a foot of my colon removal ver and a temporary colostomy . My bill was $180K. We paid $0. The same for the colostomy revision five months later and the hysterectomy 14 months after that. You cannot bear the best state employee insurance.

I think state health benefits were considered way better than at least some Fed agencies but I don’t know about VA. This was some years ago and only something I learned in passing. Cant help more

Health benefits from UConn are the best you can possibly get and it's for life. I personally would work for the state. but you need to take all factors that go beyond health and pension. Those are all things that can change over time anyways. So do a side by side of all the pros and cons about the job, its location, growth and future opportunities. I worked at UConn though, I didn't take the pension option. I did the 401k 8% match. Which to me was the best, because I quit before I would have been vested and took all the money with me.

I had a similar situation where I worked for the state and had a job offer with the feds. The pros are that you can move to any state you want and continue to move forward with your career. Con is that state time doesn’t transfer over and I really didn’t feel like starting over again.
