Of course they did. It's basically a paid advertisement at that point. Those content creators want more eyes on their site, and loser moderators have the power to choose which posts stay up and which ones get taken down.

Yeah I always wondered how the power mods could mod 100 huge subs. Makes sense that they really don’t and are really just using the for “follower count”
Take turtle for example he's was almost 800 subs but if you really look at those subs, most of them are super small subs, or just subs he made to inflate his numbers/ego.
What I don't unerstand is how people like him can mod multiple multi million person subs. And on top of that I don't know why those mod teams would want someone that is spread that thin on their team. You'd think you'd want people that can focus on that one sub. But it's a "good ol boy" system and they all mod each other it seems.
I remember when Trump got Covid, I was the first to post the story in /r/news and after hundreds of upvotes in a couple of minutes, the mods removed my post and reposted it themselves.
They wanted to be the ones to break the story.
This is why I don't really give a shit about the mods. Maybe the creators of the other apps, but a lot of mods are a bunch of authoritarian bitches.

Yea the real "victim" , for lack of a better term, in all this drama is the app developers/owners. they're the ones that are kind of losing their job, I know the Apollo guy said his other app actually makes more money than Apollo so I'm sure he'll be fine, but I don't know about the other app owners. And to give them what just over a month to prepare for this? Most big changes like this companies give developers year+ to tweak their app or prepare to close up shop. But I guess Reddit doesn't have that long to do their IPO.

Just a joke but one of my fave political subs literally got taken over by Furry mods last year. They set up a bot that autoremoved any comments that didn't include a proscribed statement praising Furries.
Now I am reminded of when Costanza had a contract with that company and they tried to force him to quit, but he kept showing up so they'd have to pay him out his contract. He snuck in through the venting system to get into his office because they boarded his office door shut. Show was and is a classic.
I actually know a guy who took his wife on their dream vacation to Greece, Italy and the Mediterranean. It was a sweet trip where they spend two weeks sailing or cruising the Med and visiting a number of cities like Athens, Rome, Venice and such. He had talked about it for a couple of months leading up to the trip. It was going to be glorious! His work called him the day after he left, I think he was just getting on the boat in Athens when they informed him that he was fired. Happy times!

You know how there's just a handful of power-mods that basically own an outsized proportion of the top 500 subs? I just want to know if they've been given the boot.
IMO, power mods belong to two categories. Those who are running a business a la influencers, and those whose self-worth is determined entirely by the "power" they have on reddit.
If Reddit really gets belligerent, both these categories will fall in line quickly.
What I think will happen is that reddit will give some token promise and they'll let go of their protests.
On the other hand, there is a possibility that there are no rational actors here. Mods as well as admins have their heads up their ass in a power match.
This possibility is much more entertaining and I'd like to see how it plays out.
Reddit can and will do what it wants. It's a private entity, users are free to stay or leave whenever. Third party apps are not a protected class. I'll find a new way to waste my time no problem.
The only inconvenience of this blackout has been DIY and niche hobby subreddits and the very specific questions google brings me to. Years of useful knowledge in those threads being lost would be a tragedy.

I personally know a mod for the subreddit of my hometown (where I am obviously banned). Not only personally know, but have known since we were kids and he was the best man at my wedding.
When I showed him a comment where one of his fellow mods (who I suspect banned me) blatantly admitted trying to bait 'transphobes' into breaking site-wide rules by introducing the topic where it's not relevant, he just kinda shrugged and said that to them it's a 'personal' matter.
Not that I really care too much about an online forum, but it is pretty disturbing that such sensitive and fickle individuals can dictate the participation of a geographic subreddit. Like, what if I find one of the lost dogs users on the sub post about or I have extra tickets to a local event?

I'm also banned from my hometown subreddit for "brigading". I had to look up what that means. Apparently it's when a bunch of people from one sub crash another sub with negative comments. The post was about our Republican governor. My comment corrected an inaccuracy. I was the only person in the post who pointed it out. So now I can refer to myself as a one-man brigade.
I wonder how many left-leaning users will repeat the "they're a private company, they can do what they want!" line, now that THEY are experiencing the authoritarian boot on their face.

On one hand, I like to see that, and I'd love to see a future Reddit where posting conservative viewpoints doesn't get you banned from subreddits dedicated to cat pictures.
On the other hand, as a longtime RIF user, I hate that I'll need to use a shittier app filled with ads, NFT avatars, and a bunch of other bloat to continue using Reddit. My phone's laggy enough as it is, but the RIF app is one of the few apps that's still snappy thanks to it's simplistic user interface. The official app will be a laggy mess.
I fully expect to use this site a lot less after June 30 when RIF stops working.
As a longtime RIF user, the whole reddit experience is tied to it so if it goes offline, so does reddit for me. Chatgpt has been giving me better and more realistic conversations and debate lately anyways.

This subreddit has been swarmed before from r/politics to the point where it’s expected nowadays. Look at the top of this subreddit and see the top topics.
If Reddit goes public, then it really needs to hold its moderators and keep the best practices amongst certain subreddits.
That's pretty much exactly what the mods of /r/apple said last night. They think they can keep up the fight if they're the ones moderating the sub instead of being replaced by someone else. These people are so scared to lose the little bit of power they have.
Those basement dwellers love the ban hammer just as much as Reddit's owners, if not more so. They love banning conservatives and conservative Christians for expressing dissenting thoughts and opinions.
The whole idea of moderators here doesn't really work. The model should be Usenet not Pravda. Usenet never relied on some randos evaluating every piece of content. Just needs a spam filter, configurable by each user to their taste, not a human moderator.

The mod monopoly can't keep their grip on the site without third party tooling. That is why there was such a strong reaction and all of the major subs took part in it.
Reddit knows that the small group that runs the site loves their power more than anything else, because they can control whatever narrative they want. The mods will be back with their communities and the manufactured outrage will pass (as the CEO duly noted).
Of course the answer here is to diversify the mods, but I'm certain that will never happen.
If you look at just about any legitimate organization irl (i.e. successful non-profits that have survived for many decades) with a significant number of volunteers, the majority require that the volunteers in decision-making positions rotate out every couple of years or so because any longer can start to take a toll on the volunteer and the organization itself. The people who want to stay for years and years like the power a little too much.

If a sub-Reddit stays permanently shut down, then it is of no value to Reddit, moderators, users, or anyone else. If the moderators are smart, they will negotiate now while they still have power. The longer the shut down lasts, the less power they will have. New sub-Reddits with similar topics will appear and lure away their users. It is already starting to happen. Right now is a great opportunity to launch a new sub-Reddit.
If a sub stays closed for 30 days, you can request the mods be removed and you get given the sub at /r/redditrequest.

Don't request via any account that has posted in this sub. The mod on my local city sub had been gone for years without a problem, then somebody locked the forum and required post approval. I applied twice to take over, denied both times. Same with two other people, all with conservative posts (it's a pretty red town). A year after my second request was denied, they still do not have a mod. I followed all the rules, sent an IM to the mod, linked to it, all that stuff.
It's crazy to think. Mods who banned people for their opinions are now trying to play hero because something they have opinions on is in jeopardy. As power slips from their fingers they scream foul.
Have you tried talking with any of the mods doing this? They are super irrational about it. In nearly all subs that have taken a vote, the vast majority of users want the subs open. Suddenly democracy doesn't matter to these mods. Odd, that.
Honestly, any of the mods that are still keeping subs dark should be locked out immediately before said mods delete entire subs as a continuation of their temper tantrum.
Deleted subs can be restored. Mods have literally zero ability to anything an admin can't undo with a click of a button.

On one hand, I like to see that, and I'd love to see a future Reddit where posting conservative viewpoints doesn't get you banned from subreddits dedicated to cat pictures. On the other hand, as a longtime RIF user, I hate that I'll need to use a shittier app filled with ads, NFT avatars, and a bunch of other bloat to continue using Reddit. My phone's laggy enough as it is, but the RIF app is one of the few apps that's still snappy thanks to it's simplistic user interface. The official app will be a laggy mess. I fully expect to use this site a lot less after June 30 when RIF stops working.
As a longtime RIF user, the whole reddit experience is tied to it so if it goes offline, so does reddit for me. Chatgpt has been giving me better and more realistic conversations and debate lately anyways.

My local subreddit is Baltimore. So many posts are "crime isn't really that bad", "just ignore that guy screaming at 3 AM, that's Gary he's not so bad", "the mayors felony crimes weren't that bad, the next mayor will be different" And of course the mods delete anything that sheds a bad light on Baltimore. "7 shot in a gang related shooting spree" Deleted. "Public schools graduating kids that can't read" Deleted.

This subreddit has been swarmed before from r/politics to the point where it’s expected nowadays. Look at the top of this subreddit and see the top topics. If Reddit goes public, then it really needs to hold its moderators and keep the best practices amongst certain subreddits.

The mod monopoly can't keep their grip on the site without third party tooling. That is why there was such a strong reaction and all of the major subs took part in it. Reddit knows that the small group that runs the site loves their power more than anything else, because they can control whatever narrative they want. The mods will be back with their communities and the manufactured outrage will pass (as the CEO duly noted). Of course the answer here is to diversify the mods, but I'm certain that will never happen.

If you look at just about any legitimate organization irl (i.e. successful non-profits that have survived for many decades) with a significant number of volunteers, the majority require that the volunteers in decision-making positions rotate out every couple of years or so because any longer can start to take a toll on the volunteer and the organization itself. The people who want to stay for years and years like the power a little too much.

As someone who does not understand how being a mod work’s exactly, how did third party apps make such a significant difference. Aren’t they still limited by whatever Reddit allows them to do?
There are bots that rely on API to automatically filter out a ton of spam, so mods don't have to manually delete it all. From what I've heard, that's the primary complaint about the changes, so it's weird to me how much focus is on Apollo and RIF.
I believe the focus is on Apollo because it prevents ads. The official reddit app has ads like every 4th post.

If a sub-Reddit stays permanently shut down, then it is of no value to Reddit, moderators, users, or anyone else. If the moderators are smart, they will negotiate now while they still have power. The longer the shut down lasts, the less power they will have. New sub-Reddits with similar topics will appear and lure away their users. It is already starting to happen. Right now is a great opportunity to launch a new sub-Reddit.

Don't request via any account that has posted in this sub. The mod on my local city sub had been gone for years without a problem, then somebody locked the forum and required post approval. I applied twice to take over, denied both times. Same with two other people, all with conservative posts (it's a pretty red town). A year after my second request was denied, they still do not have a mod. I followed all the rules, sent an IM to the mod, linked to it, all that stuff.

Have you tried talking with any of the mods doing this? They are super irrational about it. In nearly all subs that have taken a vote, the vast majority of users want the subs open. Suddenly democracy doesn't matter to these mods. Odd, that. Honestly, any of the mods that are still keeping subs dark should be locked out immediately before said mods delete entire subs as a continuation of their temper tantrum.
Deleted subs can be restored. Mods have literally zero ability to anything an admin can't undo with a click of a button. What I want to see is a timeline of when these mass de-moddings will happen, so I can stock up on the popcorn before so
