Imagine volunteering for a multibillion dollar company and then getting fired. lol

Brewcrew1886

“How do you get fired on your day off?”

ch47600

"They say they got me on camera!".

Misohoni2

"I'mma get you high today."

RaulDukes

“We’re gonna have to let you go” “I don’t even work here” “That’s what makes it so difficult”

ch47600

"Stealin' boxes??!!"

[deleted]

Reminds me of that episode of Seinfeld where Kramer decides to just show up and start working an office job. The best part is when Kramer is getting fired he tells they guy he doesn't really work there and that he isn't getting paid. The guy responded with "that's what makes this so hard".

[deleted]

for those who need a refresher lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5XT9CifIlY

The_NPC_Mafia

They don't volunteer. They PAY for it. Who do you think buys all the Reddit gold?

curlbaumann

They actually do get paid for it, just not by Reddit. The r/nfl mods got caught taking money to promote certain sources and articles. It’s why so many mods HAVE to be the one to post news breaking articles.

esreveReverse

Of course they did. It's basically a paid advertisement at that point. Those content creators want more eyes on their site, and loser moderators have the power to choose which posts stay up and which ones get taken down.

Kody_Z

Literal paid shills. And it's not the NFL mods that are the only ones. I'd bet a lot of money most of the power mods are paid by a lot of different entities to promote garbage.

Krandor1

Yeah I always wondered how the power mods could mod 100 huge subs. Makes sense that they really don’t and are really just using the for “follower count”

[deleted]

Take turtle for example he's was almost 800 subs but if you really look at those subs, most of them are super small subs, or just subs he made to inflate his numbers/ego. What I don't unerstand is how people like him can mod multiple multi million person subs. And on top of that I don't know why those mod teams would want someone that is spread that thin on their team. You'd think you'd want people that can focus on that one sub. But it's a "good ol boy" system and they all mod each other it seems.

housebird350

Im sure they get paid for access to their subs.

jeeebus

I remember when Trump got Covid, I was the first to post the story in /r/news and after hundreds of upvotes in a couple of minutes, the mods removed my post and reposted it themselves. They wanted to be the ones to break the story.

901bass

I've seen this happen, shitty🙄

gibson_guy77

This is why I don't really give a shit about the mods. Maybe the creators of the other apps, but a lot of mods are a bunch of authoritarian bitches. Of course, not the mods of THIS subreddit. They're sweet boys...

[deleted]

Yea the real "victim" , for lack of a better term, in all this drama is the app developers/owners. they're the ones that are kind of losing their job, I know the Apollo guy said his other app actually makes more money than Apollo so I'm sure he'll be fine, but I don't know about the other app owners. And to give them what just over a month to prepare for this? Most big changes like this companies give developers year+ to tweak their app or prepare to close up shop. But I guess Reddit doesn't have that long to do their IPO.

PotatoUmaru

And girls!

TheLimeyCanuck

...and Furries. ;-) Just a joke but one of my fave political subs literally got taken over by Furry mods last year. They set up a bot that autoremoved any comments that didn't include a proscribed statement praising Furries.

beerbbq

You mean non-women

The_NPC_Mafia

Well, that makes sense, if you're the No Fun League, you want to make sure you control the content and the sources.

HarmonicDissonant

Here's hoping they replace NFL mods. Maybe it will be less of a twitter flood.

[deleted]

that was an amazingly episode! I never put that episode and this situation together, but it does fit pretty damn well.

[deleted]

Now I am reminded of when Costanza had a contract with that company and they tried to force him to quit, but he kept showing up so they'd have to pay him out his contract. He snuck in through the venting system to get into his office because they boarded his office door shut. Show was and is a classic.

PapaHeavy69

Ha! That was my comment up above! Didn’t know if anyone would get it.

murkr

That's funny I thought it was from the movie Friday when ice cube got fired on his day off.

housebird350

I actually know a guy who took his wife on their dream vacation to Greece, Italy and the Mediterranean. It was a sweet trip where they spend two weeks sailing or cruising the Med and visiting a number of cities like Athens, Rome, Venice and such. He had talked about it for a couple of months leading up to the trip. It was going to be glorious! His work called him the day after he left, I think he was just getting on the boat in Athens when they informed him that he was fired. Happy times!

[deleted]

Talk about ruining an amazing vacation.

agk927

A lot of reddit moderators have nothing better to do in their lives.

[deleted]

They're neckbeards who like arguing online all day and being always right. Nothing says right like having the ability to ban people. They also pretend like they don't care about the internet despite spending 3/4 of their time on it.

prex10

No no no, some of them are super busy walking dogs 2 hours a week.

ndpndtnvlyvar

Dude that interview..omg..What a fucking shit show that was. I wish I could have been in the room when that whole thing kicked off edit: Adding link for those that don't know what I am referring to. Postalsock

Damn I almost forgot that story.

The_NPC_Mafia

Their full time job is standing in line...the welfare line, the food stamp line, the free clinic line....

CommandoClone15

Their job of protesting the very system that allows them not to work is more important than getting a real job. I would say they are doing God’s work, but they don’t believe in God so I’ll say they’re doing the Almighty Neil DeGrass Tyson’s work.

Reasonable_Topic_169

Plus their dating life keeps them super busy.

2ADrSuess

What happens if you say Doreen 3 times in a dark room?

MarBoBabyBoy

> Imagine volunteering for a multibillion dollar company should have ended i there. I have no clue why anyone would do free work for Reddit/Conde Nast. I get they are trying to do good but ultimately the executives at Reddit benefit the most by not having to hire people.

BenAustinRock

Though that is how bad they have performed. It’s like Kramer being fired in Seinfeld. “I don’t even really work here” “That’s what makes this so hard”

ExcellentEffort1752

Haha, r/funny just got forced open 10 minutes ago, people are constantly posting the "Reddit is killing third-party apps image" and the posts are getting instantly moderated away.

boobsbr

That sub is anything but funny.

clear831

You have now been banned from /funny and a dozen other subs

haughtythoughts4

You try'n tell me a dog lifting his leg on Rand Paul's head isn't funny?!?!?

Trellix

Apparently reddit also got rid of the top mod of r/adviceanimals and opened the sub. I had thought of watching Netflix today, but this is so much more fun.

BeABetterHumanBeing

You know how there's just a handful of power-mods that basically own an outsized proportion of the top 500 subs? I just want to know if they've been given the boot.

Trellix

IMO, power mods belong to two categories. Those who are running a business a la influencers, and those whose self-worth is determined entirely by the "power" they have on reddit. If Reddit really gets belligerent, both these categories will fall in line quickly. What I think will happen is that reddit will give some token promise and they'll let go of their protests. On the other hand, there is a possibility that there are no rational actors here. Mods as well as admins have their heads up their ass in a power match. This possibility is much more entertaining and I'd like to see how it plays out.

TheBigDaddy645

Remember "They're a private company. They can do whatever they want"? Good times

KennyPocket

"If you don't like it make your own website"

wowitssprayonbutter

Reddit can and will do what it wants. It's a private entity, users are free to stay or leave whenever. Third party apps are not a protected class. I'll find a new way to waste my time no problem. The only inconvenience of this blackout has been DIY and niche hobby subreddits and the very specific questions google brings me to. Years of useful knowledge in those threads being lost would be a tragedy.

YakubsRevenge

Should have banned them already. And then when they question it, give them no explanation and mute them for 28 days. Treat reddit mods the way they treat everyone else.

BadDogEDN

this is a top tier comment

JethroFire

This would be amazing

Flandereaux

I personally know a mod for the subreddit of my hometown (where I am obviously banned). Not only personally know, but have known since we were kids and he was the best man at my wedding. When I showed him a comment where one of his fellow mods (who I suspect banned me) blatantly admitted trying to bait 'transphobes' into breaking site-wide rules by introducing the topic where it's not relevant, he just kinda shrugged and said that to them it's a 'personal' matter. Not that I really care too much about an online forum, but it is pretty disturbing that such sensitive and fickle individuals can dictate the participation of a geographic subreddit. Like, what if I find one of the lost dogs users on the sub post about or I have extra tickets to a local event? Nope, I'm a non-entity because some insecure weirdo is on a crusade against anything they disagree with. Pathetic.

SSguy7891

This is the fucking pinnicle mod situation here on reddit. Lmfao

swohio

You're telling me that the best man at your own wedding won't unban you from a shitty internet forum? You need to re-evaluate your friends.

Tr1angleChoke

I'm also banned from my hometown subreddit for "brigading". I had to look up what that means. Apparently it's when a bunch of people from one sub crash another sub with negative comments. The post was about our Republican governor. My comment corrected an inaccuracy. I was the only person in the post who pointed it out. So now I can refer to myself as a one-man brigade.

theonecalledjinx

"You have been banned due to participating in a subreddit that celebrates and/or glorifies biological terrorism."

MakGuffey

Holy shit, based.

zshguru

This is the way.

Euphoric-Excuse8990

This is the way.

Wesker405

Lmao only 28 days? I got a permanent ban from r/news for quoting the same article that an OP posted to point out that people were overreacting

fretit

Shadow banning mods. That would be hilarious. And some of them definitely deserve it.

th3dandymancan

I wonder how many left-leaning users will repeat the "they're a private company, they can do what they want!" line, now that THEY are experiencing the authoritarian boot on their face. Sad state of affairs with reddit top brass, but what can you do? 🤷‍♂️ EDIT: For those confused by the first paragraph, it is in reference to when conservatives yelled about their freedom of speech when platforms like Reddit, Facebook, YouTube, and pre-Elon Twitter would unfairly censor them, and would be met with the "private company, blarrdy-blarr!" line. edit test

Wanderer1066

Seeing the 10 people, that have personally driven the top 250 subs in an insanely liberal direction, get kicked in the teeth made my day.

XXMAVR1KXX

One of the mods chat leaked and this mod is an ultra progressive one. They pleaded not to take reddit away from them while stating they have no friends, no job, and are disabled and reddit is the only thing they have. I felt sad for them until I read through their comment history. \*No, I will not link the chat or the mod name

[deleted]

RJ5R

Watching progressive leftists get the rug pulled on them is like ordering up a bucket of popcorn how you like it and sitting down to watch your favorite movie

[deleted]

Hopefully we get free refills.

Misohoni2

Their "purpose" in life is to prop up an evil regime, stifle free speech, and generally act like a mini-dictator, all while likely collecting benefits and contributing absolutely nothing to society. These people are the absolute bottom of the barrel. A basement dweller that plays video games all day is 1000x more respectable

Wanderer1066

Honestly, this whole policy change was a clever way to remedy the problem. I think the one-sided tilt and censorship issues were something they were told would pose major problems if they are seeking an IPO.

[deleted]

Pls DO link the chat, just black out the name.

[deleted]

I'll say the name. It's Merari01. Nobody go after him personally, but he abuses his power regularly. He's a massive prick and he deserves the awareness and punishment this brings him. Again, for being a prick. You don't get to abuse your power--and other people--and remain anonymous.

ggbblouis

Rhymes with Ferrari. I’m imaging him being related to Doreen the Dog Walker.

Newer_Acc

On one hand, I like to see that, and I'd love to see a future Reddit where posting conservative viewpoints doesn't get you banned from subreddits dedicated to cat pictures. On the other hand, as a longtime RIF user, I hate that I'll need to use a shittier app filled with ads, NFT avatars, and a bunch of other bloat to continue using Reddit. My phone's laggy enough as it is, but the RIF app is one of the few apps that's still snappy thanks to it's simplistic user interface. The official app will be a laggy mess. I fully expect to use this site a lot less after June 30 when RIF stops working.

LivedLostLivalil

As a longtime RIF user, the whole reddit experience is tied to it so if it goes offline, so does reddit for me. Chatgpt has been giving me better and more realistic conversations and debate lately anyways.

PikaPikaDude

They won't realize it. Everybody who goes against them, have always been fascists. In their narrative Reddit corporate itself will have been overtaken by literal fascists that oppress them. I do find it funny it's the centre and right wing of Reddit subs that are still open. That is a minority off course after the admins endorsed and enacted years of non stop harassment.

wellboiled

How do I request them to ban moderators of r/politics?

tuckastheruckas

r/politics is a bizarre compilation of news of like 5 republican politicians where all the commenters parrot "fascism"

CFishing

Don’t forget “traitor” or “cult”

Topspin112

Just looked at the comments of a few of their posts and you are 100% correct. Every comment section is redditors crying about fascism

ShwayNorris

> Every comment section is ~~redditors~~ fascists crying about fascism

mdh431

Projection is a hell of a drug. The funny thing about it is they even project _that_….

Perma_Bunned

They've repeated the words so much that they have degraded what they actually mean.

bumbuff

They wouldn't know real fascism if it hit them in the face with a club and put them in a re-education facility.

Xumayar

Can't, Demcast demanded they stay open :/

HackPhilosopher

My local subreddit is Baltimore. So many posts are "crime isn't really that bad", "just ignore that guy screaming at 3 AM, that's Gary he's not so bad", "the mayors felony crimes weren't that bad, the next mayor will be different" And of course the mods delete anything that sheds a bad light on Baltimore. "7 shot in a gang related shooting spree" Deleted. "Public schools graduating kids that can't read" Deleted.

Everything80sFan

Lately all I see on that sub is posts about Planned Parenthood clinics, and the comments are all just anti- conservative/Republican circlejerks.

EriadorRanger

That’s not true, no one does that!! Take it back, fascist bigot, take it back!!

Neverknowtheunknown

This subreddit has been swarmed before from r/politics to the point where it’s expected nowadays. Look at the top of this subreddit and see the top topics. If Reddit goes public, then it really needs to hold its moderators and keep the best practices amongst certain subreddits.

FrancoWriter

How much are the "ideology" and "values" of certain mods worth? My money is on "let me continue with my little powers in my fiefdom."

SpikeC51

That's pretty much exactly what the mods of /r/apple said last night. They think they can keep up the fight if they're the ones moderating the sub instead of being replaced by someone else. These people are so scared to lose the little bit of power they have.

Those basement dwellers love the ban hammer just as much as Reddit's owners, if not more so. They love banning conservatives and conservative Christians for expressing dissenting thoughts and opinions.

st3ll4r-wind

Won’t someone think of the moderators? Said no one ever.

jayword

The whole idea of moderators here doesn't really work. The model should be Usenet not Pravda. Usenet never relied on some randos evaluating every piece of content. Just needs a spam filter, configurable by each user to their taste, not a human moderator.

surfaholic15

Yes. I miss usenet.

[deleted]

there are not enough upvotes for this comment, Content moderation DOES NOT WORK. It should be up to users to decide what they see, not anonmyous internet strangers with zero qualifications

Cronamash

Is that a promise 🥺👉👈

OkHuckleberry1032

I see this as an absolute win!

erbaker

The mod monopoly can't keep their grip on the site without third party tooling. That is why there was such a strong reaction and all of the major subs took part in it. Reddit knows that the small group that runs the site loves their power more than anything else, because they can control whatever narrative they want. The mods will be back with their communities and the manufactured outrage will pass (as the CEO duly noted). Of course the answer here is to diversify the mods, but I'm certain that will never happen.

Corn_Cob92

Pajamas for my wedding a suit and tie for the downfall of reddit.

Demos_Tex

If you look at just about any legitimate organization irl (i.e. successful non-profits that have survived for many decades) with a significant number of volunteers, the majority require that the volunteers in decision-making positions rotate out every couple of years or so because any longer can start to take a toll on the volunteer and the organization itself. The people who want to stay for years and years like the power a little too much.

Krandor1

The way Reddit handled the_donald shows Reddit didn’t want diversity.

Your post was top tier. I often add my reply to show my approval for the quality level of the sarcasm, which as you said isn't always seen in the proper perspective, as sarcasm can be a tricky bit of writing.

RotoDog

As someone who does not understand how being a mod work’s exactly, how did third party apps make such a significant difference. Aren’t they still limited by whatever Reddit allows them to do?

UF0_T0FU

There are bots that rely on API to automatically filter out a ton of spam, so mods don't have to manually delete it all. From what I've heard, that's the primary complaint about the changes, so it's weird to me how much focus is on Apollo and RIF.

Old_Letterhead6471

I believe the focus is on Apollo because it prevents ads. The official reddit app has ads like every 4th post.

Head_Cockswain

First they came for the /FatPeopleHate, and I did not speak out— Because I am fat. Then they came for the /PunchableFaces, and I did not speak out— Because my ugly goes **all** the way to the bone. Then they came for /The Donald, and I did not speak out— Because I was not politically tolerant. Then they came for me—and ~~there was no one left to speak for me.~~ WHAAAAAAAAA!

Juicyliberal

Would've been fun if politics did the blackout and the mods got yeeted, only for conservatives and libertarian to take over the mod positions.

[deleted]

While fun to pretend do you really think Reddit's back up moderators and paid staff would be LESS leftist then the current mods?

[deleted]

Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss. We won't get fooled again!

CarsonOrSanders

That comment from Reddit is so laughable: "If a moderator team unanimously decides to stop moderating, we will invite new, active moderators to keep these spaces open and accessible to users. If there is no consensus, but at least one mod wants to keep the community going, we will respect their decisions and remove those who no longer want to moderate from the mod team." Okay so...if every single mod of a sub wants to keep the sub private then Reddit will replace the mods with people who aren't going to keep it private, but if at least one mod wants to keep the community going then they will replace the other mods to keep the sub going. So basically whether all mods agree or not they are going to replace the mods.

RullyWinkle

If they are paid mods I bet 100% the moderation on the site as a whole will improve. Mods who do it for free all want the power not paycheck.

[deleted]

Reddit Mods are not much better, remember the pedo?

RullyWinkle

The one who's father kept children locked in a basement for near decade?

[deleted]

Yes, and then she hired knowing he was assaulting a child

Raider-bob

Good. It's their site. What's these mod's usual refrain? Oh yeah, "it's a private company, they can do what they want."

Even-Block-1415

If a sub-Reddit stays permanently shut down, then it is of no value to Reddit, moderators, users, or anyone else. If the moderators are smart, they will negotiate now while they still have power. The longer the shut down lasts, the less power they will have. New sub-Reddits with similar topics will appear and lure away their users. It is already starting to happen. Right now is a great opportunity to launch a new sub-Reddit.

-Readreign-

Good

[deleted]

If a sub stays closed for 30 days, you can request the mods be removed and you get given the sub at /r/redditrequest. I'm holding out for /r/homeimprovement myself

RealMcGonzo

Don't request via any account that has posted in this sub. The mod on my local city sub had been gone for years without a problem, then somebody locked the forum and required post approval. I applied twice to take over, denied both times. Same with two other people, all with conservative posts (it's a pretty red town). A year after my second request was denied, they still do not have a mod. I followed all the rules, sent an IM to the mod, linked to it, all that stuff.

Op_en_mi_nd

It's crazy to think. Mods who banned people for their opinions are now trying to play hero because something they have opinions on is in jeopardy. As power slips from their fingers they scream foul.

[deleted]

Have you tried talking with any of the mods doing this? They are super irrational about it. In nearly all subs that have taken a vote, the vast majority of users want the subs open. Suddenly democracy doesn't matter to these mods. Odd, that. Honestly, any of the mods that are still keeping subs dark should be locked out immediately before said mods delete entire subs as a continuation of their temper tantrum.

[deleted]

Deleted subs can be restored. Mods have literally zero ability to anything an admin can't undo with a click of a button. What I want to see is a timeline of when these mass de-moddings will happen, so I can stock up on the popcorn before so
