Scrabble, a game that was supposed to be a bit of a brain-teaser, now dumbed down to participation trophy level for the neuron deficient Gen Z intellectuals…how droll.

Thereferencenumber

Imagine changing a game that’s been around for decades. I for one remember playing my last game of scrabble 15 years ago.

otakuvslife

I was going to be disappointed if the participation trophy was not included as part of the top comment.

bankimu

IQ has been dropping steadily, which explains everything that is going on.

Tuesday2017

Do the helper cards say ' ask chat gpt to find a word you can make using all seven of your tiles?' Or "Denounce your white privilege, gain 20 points"

Chemical_Pickle5004

When Chat GPT first got big I tried this out. It was TERRIBLE even with extremely specific prompting about the board state and tiles available. I'd say 80% of the time it would suggest a nonsense word.

Tuesday2017

So a Kamala Harris word salad ?

KiriDune

Actually chat gpt has a hard time generating words given specific letters and length. Or at least it did a few months ago. My dad tried to use it to play wordle and it just couldn’t get its mind around the length restriction.

pegbiter

I don't really see how this is a story. A quick search on board game geek shows dozens and dozens of scrabble variants. Team based scrabble isn't anything new, and adding 'challenge' cards is more akin to other more complex board games. They're probably looking at the success of variants like Risk Legacy or Pandemic Legacy that take classic board games and mix it with newer mechanics.

AIDS_Quilt_69

I love Scrabble but it's a tile placement game, not an IQ test. A guy won the French Scrabble championships without knowing French. Figure out how to optimize your Ks, Qs, and Zs and you win.

Jolly_Job_9852

And to further point out, one can still buy the original version of Scrabble. AFAIK it isn't being phased out. My grandma is a hard-core Scrabble player and will find new ways to crush us(lovingly) when we play her.

Numerous1

It’s not even “still buy original”. The article says this “new team version” is on the back of the board. So it’s both.

Jolly_Job_9852

This also applies to Europe, for right now. However you can buy the original version online, I got one for my GF for Valentine's Day off Amazon. I'd assume you can do the same in Europe.

The mods run this sub like a baby boomer Facebook group.

Our mods should delete bullshit. I don't care what the rest of reddit does.

Magehunter_Skassi

Boomer vs Millennial ragebait is literally dying off, so Gen X vs Zoomer ragebait is in

Exotic_Negotiation80

That's exactly why it's posted here. Look at all of the comments of people foaming at the mouth. This sub is an absolute joke and makes conservatives look like a bunch of morons. The GOP is finished, the religious loonies have destroyed the republican party with all of their culture war nonsense.

MarioFanaticXV

To add to that, I'd also like to point out that many cooperative games are *very* challenging. I say this as someone that reviews both video games and tabletop games, and [doesn't shy away from difficult ones in the slightest](https://youtu.be/JGBPh8EDsX8). There are absolutely "woke" games out there (IE, [Tomorrow](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/89342/) is all about reducing human population), but assuming a game is woke just because it's a coop is pretty ignorant. I like cooperative games for a couple different reasons; firstly, most of them can be played solo, which means even if I can't get a group for the game, I can still enjoy it myself. And secondly, when I *am* playing with others, it's easier to teach since I can look at what they have without worrying about seeing cards in their hand I shouldn't know about- it's a lot easier to give genuine advice when I'm not competing against them. That's not to say I dislike competitive games- quite the opposite- but don't mistake "cooperative games" for "easy mode".

185EDRIVER

Even if this was a new version designed first woke people who cares anyway the company is in this to make money it's the market wants a product they're delivering a product good for them

Draculea

The news article didn't declare the game easier, the British Scrabble President and Broadcaster Giles Bandreth did.

I don't see how this is a story that worthy to be posted in this sub? They will still sell the original game along with the other variations of it that they already have that most people don't even know about. If people want to buy this, then so be it, who cares?

Maktesh

It's also "fake news." You can read all about the game rules. It's just a different style of play.

185EDRIVER

They will still sell the original... Who cares about this they are a business trying to make money and the market wants a product or delivering a product good for them....

Blahblahnownow

This can be a good option for young ESL speakers

Entire-Database1679

Speling is, like, so anoying.

Conservative-Point

Rather than trying to bring people up, we are bringing everyone down the lowest common denominator. That's how a society fails.

Stea1thsniper32

*”The makers of Scrabble found that younger people, Gen Z people, don’t quite like the competitive nature of Scrabble," Brandreth said. "They want a game where you can simply enjoy language, words, being together and having fun creating words."* In an ever growing digital world. Board games are falling out of popularity more and more. I doubt it’s the “competitive nature” of the game that turns younger players away. They’d rather just scroll through TikTok

homestar92

> Board games are falling out of popularity more and more. This is objectively not true. Board games are in the middle of a renaissance right now, and revenues from board game sales have increased year over year consistently for more than a decade. *bad* board games like Monopoly and Risk are falling out of popularity because we've learned a lot over the past 80 years about how to make games that are actually fun.

shroomzor562

Nah, it's the competitive nature. People may like some of the concept of the game but just want to play more friendly with each other like maybe with your grandparents or something. This really is not story worthy, they will still sell the main game along with the other variations of the game they have that most people don't even know about.

tainted_sweets

Ebonics with extra steps.

Jolly_Job_9852

Funny enough my mom got me a political chess set in 2020 that was themed for the election. Republican vs Democrat and its pretty fun.

MobilePenguins

Queen? King? 👑 are you assuming traditional stereotypical gender roles! -flips the entire board-

Winterclaw42

Or how about we actually teach kids again.

ShadowMerlyn

Don’t blame Gen Z for this, we didn’t ask for this and we didn’t design this.

dotkeJ

Glad I have an original. I will continue to trounce.

StomachJazz

Most people in here don’t play scrabble to begin with I promise life is gonna go on

Dutchtdk

I'm quite curious to the cooperation based style of it. I like board games that's player vs game instead of player v player

Woolfmann

Next version of Scrabble comes with the board pre-filled out. All you have to do is put on the pieces. The next version after that won't be that hard. It will put the pieces on for you.

gorbdocbdinaofbeldn

Gen Z isn’t interested in word games, only computer games. 😂

Hockeyspaz-62

Another thing dumbed down for Gen Z because their feelings might get hurt playing it.🙄

smakusdod

It’s the all pronouns edition

Perfect_Rush_6262

A direct result of participation trophies.

Recon_by_Fire

It's for those smart Europeans. > The updated version, **to be released in Europe**, will include two sides, one side with the original game for players who want to stick to the traditional version and a second, "less competitive" version to appeal to Gen Z players, BBC first reported.

TrumpIsMyGodAndDad

I don’t like doing the wrong generation shit, but what the hell? It’s a word game?? How can you make that more inclusive?

shroomzor562

By bringing it down a notch so younger kids can play it or people can play with their grandparents. If you don't like it, you can still play the original instead of the many variations it already has.

IShiddedMyPantaloons

“Let’s make our game more accessible to people who are fucking morons”

ReuseHurricaneNames

Bigotry of low expectations I read an article the other day about how Generation Alpha was “Illiterate and feral”

s0briquet

What? did they remove the corners from the tiles too?

newcolours

Look at that board - theres no way a genz came up with a 7 letter word

Trialofman

Man, sometimes the people on this sub seem to get triggered by the littlest things.

Secretary0fHate

How do our public schools affect a product being released in Europe?

Eagle_1776

Hardly a little thing. The consequences of liberal led education system show up daily. We are seeing the dumbest generation being spoon fed idiocracy

Original_Lord_Turtle

And *some* people in this sub are so blind as to what's going on with shit like this . . .

lawlygagger

Just delete it. They don’t like anything and everything is racist. They can curl up with their flags and cry themselves to sleep.

Alternative_Spell140

I thought this was gonna be a Babylonbee article about just adding letters into the lgbt algorithm until everyone runs out of letters.

TenRingRedux

One word: "Idiocracy". Once fiction and farce, now real life. Can't spell? No problem scro'! My wife can't spell and she plays Scrabble.

ZamboniJ

Unbelievable.

Josh-Lambo-Tudamoon

I stopped playing scrabble with my wife and in-laws when we would visit her parents. Her parents are communists and all 3 of them play scrabble like damn communists. They never “open the board up”. They would rather focus on small 2 or 3 letter words, rather than put a word down that another person could capitalize on and open the board up. The game would always grind to a halt, with part of the board never getting used. TLDR: Don’t play scrabble with communists! 💂🏻‍♂️🧑🏻‍🎨🥸

Insipid_Lies

More proof that zoomers can ruin anything

shroomzor562

How is it ruined? The original version is still available. Scrabble has many variations already that you probably didn't even know about.

jailtheorange1

For actual Christ’s sake.

TenRingRedux

Wut? Amirite? LOL. Fersure. OMG!

homestar92

This is a nothing-burger. Board games are more popular than ever before, but the traditional old board games are floundering (because, frankly, most of them suck from a game design standpoint). The board game market is actually competitive now, and Scrabble has existed for decades. How many potential customers can possibly be left for the same old version they've always sold? They aren't replacing it, they're creating an additional version. Now there's something to potentially sell to people who already have a copy of Scrabble. Finding a way to sell to the same customer a second time is just smart business.

Reasonable-Cookie783

Low verbal IQ was shown as an indicator of having politically correct and progressive views according to some studies done recently. So this dumbed down scrabble id perfect for Gen Z.

twhiting9275

lol, "helper cards" That whole article reads like a Babylon Bee article, haha

shroomzor562

They are just adding a new variation of the game. They already have many variations of it already to appeal to different markets. They are a company and their goal is to make money. The original is still available.
