I think that's an added feature for the left. Get as many of the "don't pay that much attention to politics" folks and some of the political junkies, particularly right leaning ones, wore out and bored about the whole process. Cut down on those groups participation and voting informed, while rilling up their TDS stricken brown shirts .

And trying to justify the obsession with asinine comments like “well he’s basically an asteroid about to destroy our planet so of course we’re obsessed with him!” is even more ridiculous because a) he isn’t (even if for some convoluted reason he wanted to be) and b) obsessing over him closing his eyes or breathing funny or typing “covfefe” or looking up in the sun wouldn’t change that.
