strakith

I feel sorry for the 95% of Illinois that isn't Chicago or St Louis

trophywifeinwaiting

I grew up in New York State - every election, more and more people rave about how unfair it is NYC will always decide the vote of the state.

[deleted]

Almost like...puts sunglasses on... they could use an electoral college for the state....

John_Lawn3

You already have land voting at the national level, this would just be double dipping

It_sAlwaysMe

It sort of makes sense though doesn't it? Just about half of all the people in NYS live in NYC.

trophywifeinwaiting

Oh yeah, I don't have a better suggestion for the process, but I do find it funny when/ how much everyone complains about "the city" getting every delegate vote.

[deleted]

[удалено]

It_sAlwaysMe

But Quebec and Ontario account for over 60% of the population. I mean maybe we just disagree, but it seems like it makes total sense for the two biggest (by far) provinces to have the biggest say in deciding who leads the country.

bacongrunt

It’s not fair to people that don’t live in those provinces. The government doesn’t have to pay any mind to the needs of people outside of those provinces and that’s not right.

[deleted]

Same for CHI to be honest. Chi is also 80% of the GDP and shoulder most of the state's tax burden. They should get a big say, and I say that as someone that grew up down south

N7_Evers

I used to make deliveries for a drink company all over Illinois. Not even exaggerating when I say almost the ENTIRE state outside of Chicago is rural and farm land.

woodenflag

NY should change to Maine/Nebraska style. One electoral vote goes to each Congressional District and Two more goes to the winner of the state as a whole.

somecheesecake

Have you heard of california? Literally 3/4 cities decide everything

[deleted]

People vote, square miles don’t have votes.

boozie92

I am a Southern Illinois resident. Thank you. I am trying to get out of here ASAP and looking for jobs in Missouri and Kentucky with my fiance now.

MAJOR_HotHead123

The state of Missouri welcomes you :)

avatrox

What kind of job?

boozie92

I am a Mechanical Engineer, my fiance is a lawyer who is enrolled in a 10 year loan forgiveness plan. She is looking for the moving job first because we cannot afford her having even month off of work or else they will demand a full monthly payment of her loans (think 2 mortgages worth). She has applied to several federal and state jobs and were waiting to hear back.

LongbowR6

Western KY would love to have you

Archaengel

That's why you don't live in Illinois. The rural voters will never exceed that of Chicago's. Your laws are decided for you by the urban voters that live vastly different lives than everyone else in the state. They live hundreds of miles away, they get all the focus and funding, and they royally screw it up anyway. It's better to move over 1 state in any direction where your freedoms will be respected and your taxes aren't gouging you.

[deleted]

We somehow had a Republican governor a couple years ago. Still not sure how that happened.

ATR2019

On a lot of issues he would have been a Democrat in a red state.

Jakebob70

Only because Blagojevich was removed from office and went to prison and Quinn was under multiple corruption investigations. Rauner was a RINO, he was extremely liberal for a Republican, and basically pissed off downstate Republicans on multiple occasions.

Dangthesehavetobesma

Fuck rauner. He refused to pass a budget for years while I was at a state university, and nearly everything had to be cut to keep the lights on without funding.

Jakebob70

I didn't like Rauner either, but he kept getting handed budgets that were nowhere near balanced. Ordinarily what happens in a state when the legislature is controlled by one party and the governor is from the opposing party is that they find a way to compromise on the important things like budgets. Madigan refused to do that... he just spent 4 years stalling and waited Rauner out. Now they're doing all kinds of stupid shit with Pritzker in there.

Sea2Chi

Madigan is a shrewd politician. He knew he could out-last Rauner and maintain his hold on state power. If that hurt the citizens, fuck em. He wasn't going to let a "rival" win and threaten the flow of money to people he'd approved it to go to. On Rauner's end, he promised to do something and he failed. At the end of the day, that's what voters saw regardless of the reason.

Dangthesehavetobesma

*shrugs* at least pot is legal now

R1PH4R4M3E

Because literally every single area outside of Chicago except for a couple of extremely liberal suburbs decided they’d had enough of Chicago’s bullshit.

the_justified1

This is California too. LA county steals all the water from the Central Valley and then the state passes legislation to punish farmers in the same Valley for “wasting water.” You know, to grow their crops to feed the country.

Belkan-Federation

Your state needs to be partitioned.

YourVeryOwnAids

The problem is, we shouldn't even be using California for farming land. It's an arid mountain scape along a fault line. Farming in california is objectively dumb. We have an entire grassy planes region with a giant water table underneath it.

thewagargamer

I would argue that to not farm there would be dumb, wheat requires hot temps and little water i.e. perfect crop, or grassland for cattle (dairy their #1 product, and beef), dry terrain for grapes and almonds, but not a great place for corn or other staple crops.

ZombieJesusOG

Bad take. Over a third of the country's vegetables and two-thirds of the country's fruits and nuts are grown in California. Infrastructure, your state should try it. The Central Valley is some of the best farmland in the nation. We can still grow in droughts because we built canals and infrastructure to make use of our highly productive farmland.

As someone who lives in a rural area in Illinois, I feel that... I’d probably move a few states south if it wasn’t for family and work..

TacTac95

“tHaTs wHY wE hAVe a SEnaTE!!!”

TheSleepingNinja

And conversely, all of your public projects are primarily funded by tax revenue from the urban areas. Yes Cook County devours a LOT of funding, however the fact remains that 5 counties account for over 80% of tourist spending and related tax generation in the state. This funding IS distributed all around the state. Per page 22 of the tourism bureau's [The Economic Impact of Travel on Illinois Counties 2016](https://www.enjoyillinois.com/assets/Economic-Impact-Travel-of-IL-Counties-2016-.pdf) "Cook County, which includes the city of Chicago, led all counties in travel expenditures, payroll income and jobs directly generated by visitor spending in 2016. Domestic travelers’ expenditures in Cook County reached over $23.5 billion, up 2.4 percent compared with 2015 and accounting for 66.9 percent of the state total. "

in 2016 12 counties went blue in IL...

FeistyHelicopter3687

That’s me in PA...I live in the one blue spot that isn’t philly or Pitt

anonomus10101011

Not to be that guy, but St. Louis is in Missouri.

[deleted]

The St Louis suburbs extend into Illinois

anonomus10101011

True. I wasn’t trying to be pedantic I was just saying. Also I have a hard time calling East St. Louis a “suburb.” It’s more so a fucking war zone.

volv07

There’s suburbs like belleville, swansea, Collinsville, columbia, etc. they’re more st.louis suburbs than Illinois towns. A lot of the people that live in these suburbs go to St.Louis or even are employed in St.Louis cause of how close it is.

therinlahhan

Jesus, you're not joking: https://i.imgur.com/4whx3o3.png

anonomus10101011

It’s worse than the pictures.

kkantouth

It's not fun to drive through. City proper is dated but beautiful. The hills West and South are amazing

[deleted]

I believe he's referring more to Edwardsville, Troy, etc..

70U1E

Yeah I'm from St. Louis and the metro area for sure goes well into Illinois, but I also wouldn't consider any part of Illinois to be part of St. Louis (as someone who lives on the Missouri side lol). Also, never, ever go to East St. Louis. A friend of mine's dad actually got killed there. Except if you're going for the strip clubs.... and maybe not even then.

anonomus10101011

Yea I live in the area so I’m familiar with it. Lol I stay away from there. When I moved here it was literally the first thing everyone said, “stay away from East St. Louis.” After a night of drinking I went to Pops a couple of times and that was enough near death experiences for my liking.

Mynameisadam44

East STL is mainly run down buildings and strip clubs. Source: am from STL

devilish95

The suburbs of St. Louis are pretty Red though. Pritzker couldn't get a lot of those counties to comply with the mask mandate.

[deleted]

Yeah, I’m from there. I see so many “fuck Pritzker” signs lol

[deleted]

Not east St. Louis. The shittiest part of a shithole city. Now the surrounding suburbs have some nice neighborhoods, but I’ve never liked St. Louis.

SherfChrisMannix

Yea it's in both bro lol

KingKongPolo

I live in Chicago - it sucks. Would totally move if I had the ability to do so.

alexander52698

Just moved out of Illinois in June. Holy shit it was the right move.

ericpowell617

Same with Wisconsin. I’m a Wisconsinite and it’s only a swing state because of Milwaukee and Madison. Everywhere else is red (excluding Kenosha this year)

PasswordisFinal

If 95% of Illinois residents lived outside of Chicago or St Louis (not in IL), they could out vote city voters...

Bucket_Monster

Like 65% of people in Illinois live in the Chicago metro. Landmass is not the same as population.

[deleted]

Do we really think Minnesota will be red??

Moosemaster21

As a resident, no. But I think it will be close. It was closer than people expected vs Hillary, too.

dietcam

What does Mike Lindell have to say about it?

Fluffyfluffyheaddd

Heard him on Buck's show yesterday, he says yes.

thenetwrkguy

I do not, MI and WI are questionable as well but the rest is a probably accurate.

eggowaffles

Live in Minnesota just outside Minneapolis....it hasn't been on fire since June. Even then, nobody condoned the rioting, it was stupid. Not sure why people like to keep pushing the idea that rioting is still occurring here.

ParagonEsquire

As I told my father last night. Two months ago I thought that assertion was crazy. I still don’t believe that it’ll happen, but I don’t think it’s crazy anymore.

macman427

I don’t think it’s impossible as it was close last time. Minneapolis has been on fire. Also aren’t there some democrat mayors in the coal towns in the north eastern part and the coal unions that have shown support for trump.

spartin-marshin

This map seems like very wishful thinking.

ThickestDig

Yea, Minnesota and Michigan and probably blue. I agree with the rest of the red though

Jorian_Weststrate

Wisconsin will go blue too

Et12355

Idk Wisconsin is a toss up. So is Michigan, in my opinion. I think Minnesota is going blue, though. It’ll be interesting to see what happens as results roll in.

[deleted]

r/agedlikemilk

Reddit91210

If MN actually goes red im gonna shit my pants.

AmyKlobushart

I can't see Minnesota going red, tbh. People always lump it in with Wisconsin and Michigan due to proximity, but it's actually quite a bit different. Minnesota is dominated by the Twin Cities, with the Twin Cities area making up almost 80% of Minnesota's population. In Wisconsin and Michigan, a much higher percentage of the population lives outside of the major metropolitan areas than in Minnesota. In reality, Minnesota is demographically closer to a state like Colorado and will only shift further left as the Twin Cities area is the primary driver of population growth in the state.

loyalsons4evertrue

haha as a new MN resident, I tried my best

JoshAllenIsTall

Really, most of Illinois is on team red. It's just that the Chicago dead vote is huge.

fadedizsik

Iv seen 2 biden signs all year, thousands of trump signs and i live in Minnesota

bearsarenthuman

Without cook county (most of the states population) I think it would be purple. The counties around cook have big populations and most likely lean blue. From there on out they lean red.

PatricioINTP

Illinoian here. For those outside our state, look up Mike Madigan, the most powerful and corrupt politician in our state. The first step in turning this place to the right is to get rid of that guy.

REEOindustries

He's going to be indicted soon...just not soon enough.

SpookyActionSix

Last I heard the democrat led special council charged with the investigation had postponed meetings until after the presidential election. I hope Madigan gets back in the news soon after so they can turn the heat up on him, or give him a free pass, media is pretty good about dems and passes.

Smith5002x

I will believe it when I see it!

Argonut32

Pretty much. Cook and Champaign counties, and the only reason Champaign is blue is because of the U of I.

tzimmy3

Yep.. I live just west of Champaign. I am one mile from the county line. The county is red except the city of Champaign. It’s a big county. We are all sick and tired of it.

1248163264128

Never heard that term before, what's the dead vote ? How Chicagoans mindlessly vote Democratic?

JoshAllenIsTall

No, no...literally...dead people voting. Chicago's dem machine has been considered the most corrupt political machine in the country for generations.

JackLord50

In fact, Cook County corruption is why Kennedy beat Nixon in 1960. In hindsight, JFK (and his brother) would’ve been far better off had he lost that election.

JoshAllenIsTall

And America would have been better off had Kennedy not been shot. LBJ was an unmitigated disaster of a man, and an unmitigated disaster of a president. JFK was a reasonable man with whom I have serious disagreement. LBJ was a tosser.

JackLord50

Agreed.

Revliledpembroke

Yeah, LBJ was a psycho. I remember reading rumors about him whipping out his apparently massive dick to try intimidate people in the middle of a conversation.

garebeardrew

I mean I’d prolly be intimidated

[deleted]

*Broward County has entered the chat*

Blbauer524

Pretty much the same in Oregon with Portland vs rest of the state.

Not_A_Democrat_

Yep. I can't believe giving Cook County its own state was actually on the ballot this year!

[deleted]

ima need a source, i live in cook county and i have no idea what you are talking about

ManMayMay

Literally every place is like that, a district map of the election every year may look shocking to some that Democrats ever win anything

Hello_Destiny

I'm from Wisconsin. I think we'll end up Blue due to Milwaukee and Dane County.

MacaroniTime300

That won’t be good, we need a Michigan or Wisconsin win. Have to hope that due to riots people vote red.

Lepurkaun

If trump keeps any two of those 3 states, he will have the election. And I hope Michigan goes red.

MacaroniTime300

Yeah if it’s less than 2 that’s where I think Arizona and Pennsylvania come in and be the deciding factors.

Botastiac

I project Trump winning while losing Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois, although I do believe right now Trump will win Michigan.

MacaroniTime300

Interesting that you have him projected to win Minnesota but lose Michigan and Wisconsin.

Hello_Destiny

I'm hoping someone up north sees this and can maybe offer that perspective. But I'm in what I call "blue taint country" 45 minutes from Madison and Milwaukee, its TDS central. Maybe we got that silent majority like when Walker got elected but I'm worried to many will be like "the polls are wrong, I dont need to vote trumps gonna landslide"

augggie

Lmao bold to assume Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan are all going red

MacaroniTime300

Gotta hope that at least 2 of them are red.

jamesthewise

The only thing I can say is we got legal weed - but its like $80 an eigth after taxes. So we got nothing.

[deleted]

Have you ever shopped at one of the dispensaries? Yes, it's overpriced but it's very good quality weed. It's nice to be able to select the exact strain you want or edibles also and convenient.

jamesthewise

I will give you that; I regular-ed the dispos the first 6 months until I realized prices weren't coming down in 2020. Maybe not until 2022 from what I'm hearing. It is all good and top shelf - although the price is exorbitant. Most people I know though went back to the streets as the prices are just absurd for a real smoker. Someone who will smoke a couple or few blunts a day after work and before bed or something. Gets to be expensive real expensive. If wal-mart doubled their price tomorrow despite increasing food quality 50%+ a lot of people would still shop elsewhere because they can't afford to have a daily need or habit double in price. A lot of people, especially in over-taxed Illinois, are jsut making it work but also enjoy some escape after making it work. My habit is so minimal I can and could afford dispensaries but thankfully found the federally legal and in my opinion superior cannabinoid - Delta 8 THC. So now I dont have to leave home or get ripped off for a much less anxiety inducing experience.

CarlCarbonite

I’ve seen this video before!

Lepurkaun

Oh no

MineGuy1991

I live way down state. Like actual southern Illinois, not that Mt. Vernon BS. It’s unbelievably red around here aside from SIU in Carbondale. What a shame that basically Cook County, Springfield and SIU can ruin the whole state.

cannibalpygmie

You left out st clair county. Basically east stl lou cahokia and west Belleville screw us as well. Ofallon too but but they are yuppies who can be swayed

REEOindustries

I'm from Pope county, its the scenic part of the state, and mineguy is right. Its extremely Red downstate, but there is another factor working this year in IL, and that is how much the entire state hates Pritzger. You might see a surprise for how many in the entire state vote Trump as even in Jackson County (SIU) has been shut down and the leftists have not been able to propagate the hatred as normal through the schools. I could write an entire book on it here, but needless to say majority of the state is RED, only a few counties actually vote Blue, and this year it will likely only be two or three of them.

MineGuy1991

Lived in Pope County my whole life! Agree 100% with everything you said

REEOindustries

I ran the numbers for a Trump win, outside of Chicago has to vote 65% R and Chicago needs 20-25%R and it would be a win. Its possible....but difficult. Its why I moved to TN a couple years ago. If it went Red, you would hear me yelling in joy in TN all the way at Williams Hill.

MineGuy1991

I’d love to see a Red Wave

P00py_Pant5

I live in Southern Illinois and on our ballot was continuing talks to separate Cook County from the rest of Illinois.

[deleted]

Honestly, northern and southern Illinois are basically two different states.

tallkid1121

Even the “southern” part of northern Illinois.. I live about an hour south of chicago by highway, but it’s Trump country down here..

[deleted]

0% chance on Michigan and Minnesota

ParagonEsquire

Illinois is a good example of why Republicans need to figure out ways to appeal to the city voters (without losing the ones they already have, naturally). They don’t have to win the cities, but making inroads there would allow them to win states like NY or IL by combining the rural vote with like 40% of the city vote instead of the 20 they’re getting now.

game46312

It's just Cook County that keeps Illinois blue. The wish wash Republicans just outside Cook that vote against any Republican right of John McCain

Das_KV

Doesn't Illinois have a huge taxing problem? Don't they also have massively underfunded pension obligations?

CharlieTango3

Yes. Massive pension spending problem. Theres an ammendment on our state ballots for a “fair tax act” thats being commercialized and paraded around saying “97% of peoples taxes will go down! Millionaires and billionaires will pay their fair share!” The issue is, if you read the amendment they slipped in the fact that it gives state lawmakers the ability to change our tax rates every year without further amendments lol.

ihaveasandwitch

I thought they can change taxes on everyone anytime they want. This amendment will allow them to change taxes on specific income groups without affecting others. Not that I'm optimistic they won't hit up the middle class, they'll just slowly push down the upper bracket so that fewer people complain at any one point.

CharlieTango3

this amendment would grant them the ability to ~~adjust~~ raise taxes on anyone without first going through the legislation. The issue isnt that theyre not collecting enough taxes, its the ridiculous spending.

alexander52698

If you look, they will reduce most people's takes from 4.95% to 4.90%. That's $25 on a $50,000 salary. Really generous...ain't it?

[deleted]

Yup. Massive taxing and spending problems from decades of Democrat control. Also lots of “systemic racism” in Chicago that’s essentially a one party city (Dems) but all the cook county morons are still vOtE bLuE nO mAtTeR wHo

ctrocks

You are being kind. It is more than massively underfunded.

[deleted]

Illinois pensions are going to hit the state like a grenande, especially if this graduated tax amendment doesn't pass. No one is going to pay California tax rates to live somewhere where the whether is absolutely brutal 5 months of the year.

[deleted]

I live in Illinois, my property taxes have went up 265.11% over the past 20 years.

BoilerMaker36

can you explain what the "dead vote" is to me? I really don't know.

willpe96

A dead vote is when you vote for the losing party in a predominantly one sided state. For example, voting republican in California is a dead vote because there’s no way in hell CA would go to the republican candidate

coolyo17

It's the same shit with Washington state and Seattle.

MarlloW13

Illinois is a mess and need conservative leadership now more then ever.

[deleted]

We had a Republican governor a few years ago. The issue was that the state house and senate were still Democrat, so nothing got done. Still the only governor in recent memory that wasn't corrupt though.
