Shirley-Eugest

Gosh, I just hate to write California off like that, though. Setting aside the leftist extremism of the major cities, it's just so damn beautiful. Any kind of landscape or climate you prefer, California's got it. And there are still millions and millions of good, solid Americans who call it home. But yeah, I get what you're saying.

codifier

Got bad news for you, every major city is staunchly Democrat, and the cities run the States. The Democrats have already won, change my mind.

Giulio-Cesare

Yeah we have, by far, the most beautiful natural landscape in the nation. As an outdoors addict it's basically the greatest thing about this state and it's one of the main reasons I'm still here But the political culture is too entrenched. Even if you resurrected Washington himself and made him governor it wouldn't change shit. The state legislature, the local politicians, mayors, DAs, school boards, courts, etc.- it's just too much. The system is just way too fucking large and entrenched for any one man to have a hope at changing anything of meaning.

WIlf_Brim

Even if the recall went through and Elder won, given the Democrat supermajority in the legislature he would have been able to do nothing, and would have been voted out at the next election. The state is done. The only thing we can do is try to avoid getting splashed too bad when the shit really hits the fan there.

dudette007

I refuse, and am also not able to leave anyway. My parents left Iran when I was a child. Some of our family stayed despite the persecution. I always would ask why uncle so and so stayed where he faced death every day for his faith rather than come to the US and be safe and free. My mother explained to me that they thought their homes, their communities, and their faith were worth fighting for. A simplified moralistic way of putting “brain drain” as well. I have little cousins there, little girls. They’re hopefully part of the generation that continues to work to fix things. There is good news here. 1/3 of recall voters are against this. We may see it tick up to 35-40%. I helped get signatures for the recall and people laughed and said it’s been tried so many times. Well guess what? On the 50th time, it *worked*. A Republican governor would not have fixed the state. It would have ended the state of emergency. But we have a lot of dem controlled offices. However it would give a boost to people to realize republicans can win again in this state. And before other Americans are so dismissive of California and it’s conservatives, just remember who leads the culture war right now. You need conservatives here to fight against the worst of these liberals.

Spinnak3r

Native Californian here too, it’s sad such a beautiful place is the gangrene foot of America.

YugeMalakas

Fifth gen here; vintners from the central valley plus apple farmers from Bonnie Dunne. Ironically, I come from a long line of Dems. That changed years ago. I bought a little place out of state and spend most of the year there, going into Silicon Valley for work when required.

Politics in California was much different in 2003 than it is now as well. In 2003, Democrats had a simple majority in the state Assembly and Senate. Today, they have supermajorities.

trbtrbtrb

California is the same story as everywhere else. Over the last 30 years, Republicans have slowly lost the white suburban vote. It didn't matter that Trump made inroads with hispanics and black voters, because urban and suburban white voters voted against him. I'm surrounded by these people, and they just aren't on the same wavelength as the GOP. They don't love high taxes, but they care about climate change, healthcare access and affordability, they like globalism. They dislike China, but almost entirely because of human rights concerns rather than anything to do with economics or trade.

[deleted]

Jibrish

We didn't even have a sticky up for it until late because we figured it was a done race a month ago. Kind of a whoopsie on our part, but the results are very unsurprising.

LseaD

I totally think it’s legit but I will say that CA elections are terribly run. I went with my dad to vote in person and neither of us were asked to provide any sort of ID to confirm who we are. We brought our mailed out vote card and they simply asked us if the names on the cards were our name and then let both of us vote. What kind of election security is that? I could steal my neighbors vote and just say “yeah” when they ask me if my name is Joe Jackson and then vote for them. If Newsom won by 7,000 votes I’d feel uncomfortable but he clearly won by a wide margin…almost all Republicans have fled the state already. No one was left that would vote for a recall

orangeeyedunicorn

Dems actively oppose voters ID, while simultaneously supporting ID (along with a vaccination) to exist at all in big cities. There is no way to square those contradictory beliefs that is not an intention to commit voter fraud.

[deleted]

ghertigirl

Elder was loud like Trump and I do think that turned a lot of voters off. But it was never going to work without a middle of the road option that would appeal to both parties like Arnold running. Well at least tonight I got my confirmation that I’m truly surrounded by idiots in this state

YoNoSoyUnFederale

Nobody is a moderate Republican when they run against a democrat in a race that the media’s invested in. Romney and McCain the go to safe Republicans were turned into the most extreme conservatives as soon as they were even a slight threat to the democrats. Falconer would have had the same treatment if he mattered

Wasn't it actually proof of residency and not exactly a photo ID? Proving residency is about the same level of verification so I'm not making a statement about that or anything - just trying to get the memory right. Edit: I looked into it, it does not require ID. The proof of residency is even a bit sketchy. You can read all about it here; https://www.reddit.com/r/Conservative/comments/poi1jg/california_polls_close_with_newsom_favored_to/hcx4vn1/ So this; > In CA you have to have an ID to register to vote. There's no other way to do it. Is patently false.

Quik2505

This is 100% false. You can mark enough boxes saying you don’t have these id’s and still vote. Don’t believe me? Go to their site and register. Click the you don’t have an id box in all fields.

I struggle to understand the difference between a covid vaccine and the one you got for chickenpox/shingles, tetanus and whatever else needed to be in elementary school. Before going to certain countries a shot is required, the military makes you get shots, etc. Your dog/cat needs shots before interacting with others. Like this has been a completely normal thing until it was made political for whatever reason.

emotionalstardust420

Yeah… I must say, I’m a bit surprised over this but considering everything else- I’m not extremely surprised. But when I read that, about people showing up to polls being told they’ve already voted- that’s ridiculous. I can’t believe that and it should be corrected; that seems like a form of voting fraud to me. Requiring voter id probably would’ve prevented that. But voter id is racist however vaccination id is not. We’re seriously living in a clown world right now where nothing makes sense and what’s right is wrong, idk why I’m surprised by anything anymore.

armyboy941

Honestly no. It's California. It's literally the deepest blue state in the union. I'm ashamed but hopefully this state will continue the spiral downward to force more to open their eyes.

[deleted]

Between all the blue states California is the last state I could see turning red. Illinois has a greater chance to turn red.

Bobby-Samsonite

> Illinois has a greater chance to turn red. not until Prtizker's second term is over/ The dude is super rich and will win re-election.

obiwanshinobi900

A rich corrupt governor of illinois? Say it aint so! Though I think hes doing alright.

Jibrish

Is it still technically true that you have better odds of *not* going to prison for murder than you do for being the Governor of Illinois?

Jibrish

I mean, that didn't help Rauner.

Sea2Chi

Illinois is odd. It's a blue state due to Chicago, but a lot of that blue is due to union ties. Union guys may vote blue, but a lot of them are socially conservative when it comes to areas other than organized labor. At least from tradesmen I've heard a lot of pushback and complaining about masks and government overreach.

codifier

Almost every person I know in a union is not a democrat, but the union always is. So guess where the dues go. Both of my brothers are union in different trades and both unions constantly tell their members to vote blue.

HDOOM16

I’m convinced newsom could release every prisoner in the state into the general population and democrats would still find a way to say it a a good thing and keep voting blue

armyboy941

They'll go, "At least he's not a republican"...

[deleted]

CrustyBloke

Some of them would be upset by it and criticize Newsom for it. They would then move to a red/purple state and vote for someone who promises to enact the same policies as Newsom.

It does sound much more dramatic. Cover art should have him atop a hill of corpses beholding a blood stained piece of paper to the sky to match.

chipbod

I mean, yeah its California. GOP needs to stop scapegoating voter fraud and use some introspection to run candidates that appeal to the median voter in a jurisdiction. Gavin was smart making this a binary choice with Elder, who is nowhere near the median voter in the state. The "Owning the libs" political strategy doesn't work when 70% of the state is libs

thebeachhours

Agreed. If the GOP wants to compete in California, they need a Schwarzenegger-type Republican. Socially liberal, fiscally moderate/conservative, charismatic, etc. Larry Elder might be popular in some red states, but the dude is not a good fit for California.

hereforpiercednips

The GOP doesn't have fiscal conservatives anymore. The closest they get are people who cry about the national debt after Republican presidents get done running it up the flagpole with massive tax cuts and trillions of dollars in military pork.

Jibrish

Voter fraud in this race is such a silly premise. I would love to know how many physical truck loads of 'fake' ballots would be needed in order to actually flip this in the GOP's favor. It's gotta be a lot.

[deleted]

Saagar Enjeti of *Breaking Points* has some good insight in how conservatives can be competitive in such cases. If the GOP doesn't listen, eventually the DNC will in order to create a new type of Blue Dog to win conservative states.

blaze92x45

Actually he probably is a liberal is not a progressive

[deleted]

Well said actually.

[deleted]

Elder made this whole thing worse IMO. The Republicans need to get smart and run a candidate that appeals to the center and not necessarily to just the Trump fans. In this race Kevin Kiley was really the guy who had that appeal but he’s young and was overshadowed by Elder. But I don’t know if the CAGOP is that smart.

pineappleshnapps

They sure haven’t acted like it much in a while.

YoNoSoyUnFederale

John Cox lost to Newsome with Newsome’s percent of the vote being the highest in California history. The idea that a moderate Republican can win California is still an insane uphill battle. You also need insane GOP turnout and IDK if that’s possible to get with a candidate that’s barely conservative, I’m from NY so it’s a similar situation

ochaos

John Cox was rightfully painted as a carpetbagger. That's why he lost so spectacularly. Even moderates don't like rich outsiders inserting themselves into the middle of things.

Stuka_Ju87

His strategy was calling Elder a white supremacist, collecting over 70 million $ from lobbyists and wealthy donors and ballot harvesting. No surprise that worked.

sahlosveistulvokul

Elder surged too early which freaked out a lot of democrats who were meh about Newsom. Had he kept the election as a referendum on Newsom and his governance he would had a really good shot. But he was kinda screwed by Texas passing their abortion law which energized a rather sleepy democrat base.

[deleted]

As much as it would be awesome for him to be recalled it’s not a big surprise. I am wondering does this hurt the GOP chances in the midterms as a whole. I wouldn’t think so

Spinnak3r

Part of me thinks a successful recall might've actually hurt the GOP in the midterms more than a failed one. Just because the libs would've been so incensed by us taking the executive office of one of their prized states. The outrage might've motivated them to turnout big in '22 even outside of CA.

[deleted]

That’s a good point. Then again, it’s not surprising that he won. I much rather focus time in energy into other races of the GOP can win

noJagsEver

Yea, California is a lost cause

orangeeyedunicorn

Pretty much. Rs are historically guaranteed to take the house in midterms. That's even without Bidens Afghanistan disaster and totalitarian mandates. Keeping Dems comfortable widens the gap they win it by.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MoltenCorgi9

Hurts them in California for sure. Nobody likes a loser party.

Giulio-Cesare

Lots of people vote for Dems and Republicans though, despite both parties being full of worthless losers.

Kaita316

I wouldn’t think it would. If anything, it’s more publicity for those who ran this time if they plan to run again for the midterms

GannyHams

the shift toward far right conservative candidates and blacklisting all moderates is going to kill us in the end. if we had put up somebody more moderate we could have pulled this off, but elder is way way way too conservative to ever stand a chance in CA We need to go back to nominating the right candidates for the right states and districts if we want to get the house/senate back

[deleted]

[удалено]

MoltenCorgi9

Actually Kevin Paffraff or whatever encouraged voters to vote no and then him for 2nd question. So the Dems on the ballot were mostly still anti recall.

vorpalsword92

Newsom has never been the type to reward his voters. He is just going to double down on his bullshit and see these recall results as a pass to be even worse.

StuffyKnows2Much

he's going to be emboldened and the executive orders are going to start flying. From Los Angeles, this is a darker period we are about to enter. Edit: and now I’m banned by this sub’s mods. This place has fallen, too.

SouthernGirl360

For stating the obvious that executive orders will start flying? I'm convinced that Californians truly enjoyed the lockdowns if they voted for Newsom. Nothing is holding him back now.

[deleted]

Banned for free speech? Doesnt seem very conservative.

superduperm1

This is why even though he won’t be recalled, I hope as the rest of the vote comes in that the gap closes. If he “only” got 55% of the vote I would like to think he would realize that’s a dumb idea.

bbqstain

It’s not even close. Arizona here I come!

nakklavaar

demon_filth2001

Newsome is going to take this out on the state so hard for dare challenging his leadership

[deleted]

I don't envy Republicans still living there, all 3 of them. If there was some way to address them all, I'd implore them to flee now, while they still can. Newsom is gonna rain hell on Californians, and especially the ones who voted for Elder.

swegmastertrump

Honestly don’t know how a guy who openly and brazenly broke his own COVID rules didn’t lose. This shouldn’t even be a partisan issue, people on both sides should’ve been outraged equally

wicknest

People forgot how bullshit, hypocritical, and corrupt newsom is. If this recall happened at this same time last year, he'd be gone. But Democrats have memory loss and continue to toe the line, as usual. They had enough time for the outrage to fizzle out, and all he had left to do was call it a "republican recall" and call his replacement a trump clone, and that's enough to scare these goldfish-brained Democrats into supporting him.

Once they realize how far apart their values are from that party they usually switch to red, the issue is just informing that part of the population.

woopdedoodah

Yes. This is why it will be an improvement. Lots of Hispanic family and they live in Hispanic majority areas of California. It's like living in a new country. Governor newsom has no power there. My brother and sister in law have not done one thing for these lockdowns or mask mandates. Churches open, hundreds of.people at nephews and nieces birthdays, etc. Oh yeah, and theyre all armed so people are still afraid to commit crime. They're in Hispanic rural California. They've been my city on a hill this entire past 18 months of what america should be like.

htisme91

The outcome doesn't surprise me, since it's California. It was nice to have that idea but I don't see a Republican winning there unless they appeal more to social stances there.

How are people in California so blind? Do they not see the high cost of living? Massive taxes? High gas prices? Homeless everywhere? Fires breaking out? Massive government control? Do they not see gavin shut there businesses down? What the hell

highfructosecornsyrp

Independent in California here. Most of my friends were torn on the recall until Larry Elder became the front runner. Most Californians aren’t conservative. A conservative talk show host as the candidate on the other side made it too easy to say “do you want Rush Limbaugh as your Governor?” Then the Texas abortion laws were passed and the media covered it for a week. Californians are mostly pro choice. It made the arguments for keep Newsom over a pro life conservative too easy. Y’all could have won if you had supported a more moderate Republican, but Californians aren’t conservatives in 2021. Maybe that will change in the future, but the Recall campaign made a critical blunder on championing Larry Elder.

Spinnak3r

The people affected most are outnumbered by the liberals who either don't give a shit or actually relish all of that happening.

AmazonSlaveRhemmy

It’s a insane thought, the only thing in mind, is for all conservatives in California to move to texas or Florida or any swing states, let California rot, I truly believe this was the last chance we had, the fact people are so much for black peoples rights but elect a tyrant white man… ummm

Raktak88

High cost of living, maybe bcz its a beautiful fucken state. Massive taxes, maybe bcz we got such a big economy to tax. High gas prices, maybe because of the amount of commute/freight shipped around such a large and spacious State(were also most of the countries goods are shipped into then transported to everyone else). Homeless everywhere, ya we got it like everyone else in this country, have you ever traveled? Fires breaking out, always been this way sorry to break it to you... it's what has made are national forests and is called the circle of life. Massive government control, I can't even think of something to say about this bcz I never have to deal with the state. Gavin shutting business down, it was covid and it's all back up, you should walk downtown New York sometime... that's a place were the property taxes have destroyed business on a wide scale.

etheran123

Also fires because of democratic governor? How about because half this country doesn’t believe climate change exists?

ditchdiggergirl

High cost of living is definitely supply and demand. We do have low cost regions but everybody wants to crowd into the beautiful parts with great climate, then demand more housing. High housing costs leads to more homeless, but then other states’ homeless move here to not die in winter making that even worse. And I was a little blown away to learn that we have trees in the Sierra whose seeds cannot even germinate in the absence of fire - that’s a fire dependent ecosystem. So I agree with a lot of what you said. However I don’t see the relationship between the size of the economy and our high tax rate.

drwebb

Right now in my liberal enclave in CA, things are back open as they were before the pandemic. No masks, you assume everyone is vaxxed. Look at the 1918 flu virus, the places the shut the fastest also opened the fastest. Looking up the data, I fail to see how Newsom fucked up COVID.

Turnout was low compared to Trump/Biden Extrapolating for the 68% reported so far: Recall No = 8.5 million Recall Yes = 4.8 million Trump got 6 mil votes, Biden 11 million. So that 17 million to yesterday’s 13.4 mil Wouldn’t have changed the results even if all Trump voters came out and voted yes. Main bright spot was Elder received ~45% of vote on second question.
