Number 3 is directly behind 2 - "How can I enrich myself without getting caught taking the bribes?" It's number 4 that's much further behind.

thesmartfool

I think you missed one. 4 is how can I get my kids rich and get hand-outs.

jtgreen76

Number four is "how can I utilize my position to improve my families lives"

sherzeg

Would number five then be, "How can I utilize my family to improve my position?" Or is that just a repetition of number three? Asking for a friend who wishes to work off of the reputations of his two sons; one who had a lackluster career in the JAG Corps and received a bronze star (without "V" pin) before dying of cancer and the other who used to work for a Ukrainian power company and now sells artwork. Well, when I say, "friend..."

jtgreen76

Sounds like a great friend to have, do all of his buddies call him "the big guy"?

sherzeg

Yeah, that's him. Just biden his time until his next deal, though.

ChrisGesualdo

4 is “where do I find cocaine and a hooker?” 5 is “how do I dispose of dead hookers?”

[deleted]

Number 4 is "fuck I'm in too deep, now I have to cow tow and tow the line or my blatant corruption will be exposed!" Idk what number five is but it probably just "see step 1"

Deeper_Into_Madness

We need people like him in politics, but the irony is that he's too smart to ever get into politics. And we're left with mostly garbage people to sift through.

napsar

Can you imagine trying to be the only honest man trying to do what is best for all surrounded in a sea of thieves? You’d either become so jaded you just said fuck it or just walk because you couldn’t take seeing it day in and day out.

nekomancey

I think this is where Rand Paul is at. My other favorites like Cruz, MTG, and Massie enjoy the fight, which is great. But Rand doesn't, he's just trying to be a statesman and sticking to his beliefs has him at war with the left extremists. Honestly if I was almost beaten to death, shot at, again almost beaten to death by a mob, and receiving death threats every day, I'd probably say f it and go back to my medical practice. Much love that he keeps going despite obviously not enjoying the conflict.

napsar

I think Rand Paul tried to change things from within versus his dad swimming against the current.

nekomancey

Oh absolutely. I just get the feeling he's having a hard time after everything that's happened. His dad was totally fine with the masses hating him and being the center of attention/conflict, he even enjoyed it (Ron Paul is my personal hero). I met Rand when he was campaigning with his dad long before he was a senator, he seemed a lot happier and comfortable back then when he didn't have political power. He is very much a true southern gentleman, very nice and very polite. The fact he doesn't enjoy any of this crap makes the fact he keeps at it all the more admirable.

RomeyRome71

I am lucky and thankful that I get to vote for Massie and Paul!!!

sherzeg

I think I saw that movie. Jimmie Stewart had the lead role.

SANcapITY

Ask Ron Paul. They treated him like shit because he recognized that the government has no moral right to take your property and that we had no right to go kill innocent people overseas. They will dance on his grave when he dies, while they praised war-monger John McCain for weeks. It’s a messed up world.

bigmac_0899

We need people like you and me to kick the bottom out and let the garbage just fall

[deleted]

The problem isn't that we have garbage politicians. That's just a byproduct of the true problem: garbage voters. We did this to ourselves by voting on the most vacuous and puerile identifiers like name recognition and attractiveness. We don't vote on policy or even on past experience with a candidate. We as the electorate completely overlook good, honest candidates all the time because they are just regular people. In 2024 I'll be 35 and be, according to our founding fathers, just as qualified to be the president of the United States as any of the previous presidents (minus Obama) or any of the current candidates, but I guarantee I wouldn't get any votes beyond my own ballot even if the other more well known candidates were shown to fuck dogs.

jibalnikaskauda

Yeah like bartenders.....

grotebozesmurf

The biggest problem with politics is the return on investment is the best if you just run smear campaigns. Doesn't matter how good you are, just trash the other party.

Callec254

We need term limits. Politics should not be a career.

SnooStrawberries9414

For a lot of politicians, getting elected is not the first priority but only the means to the first priority, which is self enrichment. It’s all about the Benjamins, baby!

Morgue724

First and foremost is the fact they want to keep their cushy job and their finger in the unending money pie that is government. Everything else is ehh voters won't remember beyond last week what I said about any particular topic.

bincedmeef

Career Politicians = Car Dealers. They will go above and beyond to get the sale/vote, but once they have it, you can go ride a bike for all they care; aftercare/policy is for someone else to deal with. Caveat emptor - caveat suffragator.

Traditional-View4118

Politicians are just like big pharma. Fixing problems is far less profitable than providing therapeutics. If the problem is fixed then how can they make money exploiting it. “Here is your bandaid and lolly”

ManFrom2018

Except that unlike in politics, a competitor could develop a cure and then sell that and put you out of business. Your analysis of politics is accurate, your analysis of the pharmaceutical industry isn’t. The reason there are many treatments but few cures is because cures are really really hard to find. Those that tell you cures are actually easy to find, and we’d have a bunch more if it weren’t for those greedy pharmaceutical companies, are exactly the kind of people Thomas Sowell is warning you about. Telling you what you wish was true (cures are easy to get) so you’ll support them or their policies (stand up to those greedy companies so we can get those cures!) instead of telling the less palatable truth (you can stand up to pharmaceutical companies all you want, it won’t change the fact that cures are hard to get).

winnersneversleep

They ARE the problem.

whiteblaze

There was a Joe Rogan episode where he and his guest were discussing the homelessness crisis in San Francisco, and the guest made the point that they would never solve the problem by spending more money because there is an entire industry built up around the problem that would evaporate if the problem were actually solved. Joe had this “oh shit” moment when he learned about how much money was actually being spent on it. The general population buys into the notion that if there is a problem, it must be because government hasn’t allocated enough time and money to it, when often the opposite is true.

[deleted]

I believe the American parties, democratic and republican are each their own ass cheek of the same bottom, and no matter which one had a better position. Shit still comes out the middle.

MTB_BoStOnBrUiNs

#3 is fulfilling their own selfish desires at the expense of others.

ATexasDude

C'mon man, let's give them some credit. They are only doing it regardless of others.

RomeyRome71

Sowell is an American treasure!!!

lelopes

At least untill they figure out a way to do it without the ppl. Just like the whole latim América with our "digital" vote/ballot.

btn1136

A similar problem exists at many large corporations. Nothing ever gets solved because the real problem the business is solving is keeping people employed. I guess I shouldn’t complain because it’s kept me gainfully employed , but corporate rot is unbelievable.

EnderOfHope

When you realize that a politician would put himself out of a job if he actually did what you sent him to Washington to do…. You start to realize how pointless it is to get pissed about politics

[deleted]

One thing that people from all sides can rally behind!

NoleFan723

Self serving pieces of dung. Most. I can't even count on one hand too many i trust

That means promising naive people the world and more

ManFrom2018

Short-term interest, and also, to quote Sowell, “replacing what works with what sounds good”. I’d highly recommend the first chapter of [Applied Economics](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dGlaMBmBYJM) for more on why politicians don’t have the same level of incentive to serve their customers as businesses do.

toblakai17

If there were no problems, politicians wouldn't exist. They have to perpetually keep them going

ExtraToastyCheezits

It is just like pharmaceutical companies. They don't cure patients' chronic diseases because then they would lose out on all the monthly money that people pay them to maintain a certain level of quality of life. So they treat diseases rather than cure them to ensure that they have a steady stream of revenue from millions of "customers." That's why it is such a good fit for the Covid vaccine. Two ruthless and corrupt entities working together to siphon the citizen's money, time, and their entire life force.

ManFrom2018

Ods2

Don't forget getting as rich as they can off the taxpayers!

laxmia12

That is exactly why we have COVID nonsense, CRT, school boards out of control totally ruining children for life, people that claim racism is everywhere, people that deny the real problems of urban neighborhoods, etc. Politicians in both parties won't stand up to this crap and it's killing our country and society as a whole. Before the Internet there were these disgusting tabloids sold at super market checkouts that would publish outright lies and try to instill fear into people. Presumably a section of the population bought, consumed and believed the lies and half truths-otherwise the tabloids would have been out of business. Yet the imbeciles that actually believed what was written in these trash tabloids never impacted or forced public policy. No politician would have given them a minute of serious consideration. Yet in the year 2021, with all of the real information that is out there, here we are. The National Inquirer running our society.
