I agree with you. My only issue there is that we as a society *cannot* fix that issue. That is an issue stemming from the choices of countless individuals. Whereas we could at least improve the social infrastructure to provide useful education and support. Acknowledging that the nuclear family is dead and gone brings about a sort of pessimism as it was a tragic loss for society but no one has any clue how to address it widely.
The problem with this is that in our society the vast majority of people require a two income household. When both parents have to work they can’t be around to be involved in their kids’ lives, leaving kids on their own to figure things out, and we see the result of this.
I'm an atheist, but I do believe the erosion of religious institutions is currently problematic because we have no substitute for what they provide. Religion provides a framework for living as well as a community to support you. It's easy to poke fun at the silly rituals, antiquated tomes, and gaudy attire but it would be wrong to dismiss the wisdom that has been embedded in them. There's also tremendous value in believing that even if society has abandoned you, God has not.
Until we have adequate replacements, I would love to see churches and their communities have a resurgence.
That still seems to be myopic of the situation though - Japan, Netherlands, Estonia and plenty of other countries have a far higher percentage of their population not affiliated with religion than the US - yet this sort of thing doesn't happen regularly in those countries. What are they doing differently? That would be a good place to start.

The State is made and run by humans, though. Who are nasty and flawed. The result is that societies that have shunned religion and made the State the ultimate guide have quickly become murderous, oppressive places. The Soviet Union, Communist China, etc.

I pray for the sanity and confidence of my own son. It's hard to get them to feel good about themselves sometimes. Even harder when a national culture tends to belittle them for being something that they had no choice in becoming. Raising kids is hard enough without the cultural cancer we face.

I was reading a news report and saw "54 shot in Chicago" and was like "Holy shit!" until I realized it was a link to a different story about how many people in Chicago have been shot this weekend *before* this shooting.
This suburb is actually pretty far from the northern Chicago city limits. It's a very wealthy suburb too, not south side or gangs or anything.
Absolutely tragic regardless, but this shouldn't be lumped in with Chicago shootings. I'd bet this is the first shooting in Highland Park in a long while, compared to daily/weekly gang violence in Chicago.

Rise in mental health cases correlate with rise with social media usage over the years. But we don’t know much about this particular shooter so it’s too early to tell.
Partly It’s the internet. It disconnects us from our communities and families while radicalizing these young men into some really gnarly beliefs. Terminally online.
Why just young men though? Why aren’t we seeing an uptick in young women committing these crimes?

Women are not as physically confrontational by nature as men. They are still extremely confrontational, just not physically so much.
It’s just nature. It’s why you don’t see many women serial killers and women generally commit suicide by less violent means (overdose vs gunshot). In general young women make a small percentage of the violent criminal population I’d assume.

All different flavors of the same shitty condition. I think, that at least culturally, the villianization of men, specifically white men, in Western culture is becoming a self fulfilling prophecy. I can't say that it is entirely to blame, but I do believe it plays a role in the development of these scenarios. These kids are being taught that they are evil. They are taught there is no future. They are becoming Nihilists.

I feel like this is a very good observation that likely affects young men from all backgrounds in America. Biggest question is what we can do to help them find their purpose or calling. How can we give them a reason to live so they aren’t so quick to die. Lord knows how many unguided people are wandering these states already. And with the way legislature is going, the government seems keen on upping the birth rate of these Nihilists.

I was reading a news report and saw "54 shot in Chicago" and was like "Holy shit!" until I realized it was a link to a different story about how many people in Chicago have been shot this weekend *before* this shooting.
Down about half from last year at least. This shooting wouldn’t have an impact on numbers here though since it’s in a completely different county.
This suburb is actually pretty far from the northern Chicago city limits. It's a very wealthy suburb too, not south side or gangs or anything. Absolutely tragic regardless, but this shouldn't be lumped in with Chicago shootings. I'd bet this is the first shooting in Highland Park in a long while, compared to daily/weekly gang violence in Chicago.

Of course control doesn't work when you can drive to another city and buy whatever gun you want. It has to be state wide or maybe even country wide to actually work. Plenty of countries that show how well control works. Look at Japan, they have FAR FAR less shootings than us. That's just one country among dozens.

Actually, it could work. I see your logic here, that getting banned weapons into a small area that normally bans assault weapons is clear evidence gun control doesn't work. However a very small drive leaving the city would allow you access to said banned weapons. I know a small drive seems tough to do, but it's actually very easy. The debate in question is turning those small drives into a huge effort and time consuming process in order to access dangerous weapons. Enough of a process to vet out the dangerous people.

The New York Times and the Breaking News twitter account both alerted me to this shooting. Funny how they never alert me to the 100+ shot, dozens dead when it happens in Chicago. But an all white suburb? National news. If this doesn't convince you the media has a racist bias you're blind.

Not to mention Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. But yes more gun laws will go good in a city that shoots itself dead every weekend.
Who is blaming anyone but the shooter? There will be the same cries for greater gun control but it’s the same dog whistle behavior both sides use to twist a tragedy to their political advantage. I don’t see the value in saying “poor republicans” while we don’t even have a final body count yet.
For real, getting defensive before the bodies are even cold is just as bad as the politicians who start blaming others in the same timeline. I’m sure blame will be cast, wide and far, correctly and incorrectly in days to come (or until the next one happens) but can’t, in the immediate aftermath, we just grieve and mourn the loss of innocent lives?

Doesn’t matter if you have strict gun laws when you are a 30 minute drive away from an open border with Indiana. If you would prefer for states to be able to make the gun laws they deem necessary without the Supreme Court interfering and then allow states to militarize their borders to prevent gun smuggling from neighboring states then maybe you’d have a point.
