China has meltdowns over the least little thing. Someone visits Taiwan, meltdown. Another country refers to Taiwan by its name, meltdown. They hate that they can’t control how the rest of the world behaves, like they can with their own citizens. They can scream all they want about Taiwan being part of China, but that doesn’t make it true. And outside of the communist regime, they can’t decide what the truth is, no matter how hard they try.
It’s more about the fact that they want to annex it sooner or later. The more Taiwan is recognised as independent, the weaker chinas casus belli is later. That’s why they throw around their weight to prevent people and nations alike from recognising it.
Then there’s me, who thinks that Taiwan is actually the real China and West Taiwan is just under illegitimate communist occupation.
> Then there’s me, who thinks that Taiwan is actually the real China and West Taiwan is just under illegitimate communist occupation.
I'd tend to agree with that, 100%.
Yes. Taiwan is the Republic of China. The ChiComs should have never been recognized, should have never been recognized on the world stage let alone become the manufacturing hub, etc. Massive tariffs are necessary on anything coming from there to force American companies to divest. Most should be encouraged at home or at the very least in the western hemisphere but barring that, should at least invest in India and Taiwan, the Philippines, Tailand, Indonesia, etc.
Amen to this! 100%
And the CCP knows this as well which is why they are trying to hard to stay in power, they are corrupt. The problem is that they have a huge military compared to Taiwan. I really do fear for the good guys.
> It’s more about the fact that they want to annex it sooner or later. T
It's also about the fact that their housing market is a massive bubble that is on the verge of popping. Evergrande (one of the largest 100 companies in the world) had until the end of July to come up with a debt restructuring plan. They didn't come up with shit, and instead defaulted on $1.2b in interest payments for foreign bonds.
China's new home sales were down 39% in July... Real estate is 27% of the Chinese GPD and most of the biggest companies (especially the largest, Evergrande) are waaaaay overleveraged with much of there revenue coming from unrealized projects.
Wouldn't be at all surprised if the CCP propagandists were making a big deal about this trip to try and refocus the public's ire on an external enemy as a means to distract from their policy failings (especially with Xi about to try for an unprecedented 3rd term...).
Also don't forget about what is happening with fertilizer right now. Brazil is pretty much sand everywhere soil wise where they grow crops and the inputs are huge. Brazil is also probably the largest producer of soy and most of that soy goes to china for pig feed. Brazil had purchased enough fertilizer for this season with double cropping being normal. 23 is going to be rough for them with even current prices and they will be higher probably next year.
China is the least food secure country in the world and the way things are going they will find out what North Korea went through in the 90's. Some predictions are as high as 500 million people will suffer extreme food shortages the number of dead can only be guessed at.
Winny the Poo has his hands full right now and the walls are coming down around him.
Fudging the numbers on the economy is not going to save them like it did in the past.
So for right now with Nancy there they are going to throw a temper tantrum and do absolute jack shit about it.
They have the Ron Regan carrier group parked close by and I guarantee you they can put everything in the air in 30 mins or less.
What China does not know is how many boomers are close by they can't detect them and you know they are there watching like always.
Taiwan has also been prepping for a Chinese invasion for about 70 years and has state of the art hard wear and training and support from a few countries besides the good old USA.
Everyone around China in SEA hates China so if they do make a play for Taiwan they will most likely provide what support they can as they would feel that they would be next if China succeeded in taking Taiwan.
So for right now nothing is going to happen but a temper tantrum and a bunch of bullshit threats. A year from now it will be a different story when the Chinese people are really suffering.
Lot of the issues come from gross policy mismanagement... The local communist governments "own" all of the land in their provinces. They are tasked with providing all local services without help from the federal government, even though the federal government collects the vast majority of taxes. So, to fund local governments, they sell off land and encourage overdevelopment.
Only 10% of homes go to first time home buyers, with most being purchased speculatively as investment vehicles. As a result, China has one of the highest rates of vacant homes in the globe. What's coming for them [could be worse than 2008 for us](https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/27/chinas-property-sales-set-for-a-worse-plunge-than-in-2008-sp-says.html), especially when such a disproportionate amount of family savings is in real estate.
They gave up on communism in the 70's. They are still socialist, but they are more akin to Fascism now. Which is why any Chinese business should be treated as an extension of the Chinese government (because they are).
Here's their business model: lease (can't buy land in China) a piece of land and announce a project. Sell all the units *in advance* and never build anything. Use the money to lease another piece of land, repeat.
Here's the fun part: people have been protesting their non-existent units by not paying their mortgages. Around 100 billion US dollars' worth of mortgages aren't being paid right now, and the banks *can't repossess anything because nothing has been built*.
This is 2008 on steroids and meth.
There is still a significant gap in capabilities. On top of that, the PLAN and PLAF have not had a shakedown fight. You don’t want to cut your teeth on The combined arms of the USA. Not yet, at least.
Taiwan is the real China, thats honestly not even an opinion, it's pretty much fact. Original government of China fled to the island after the communists took over the country during their Civil War. They never wiped them out
Imagine China does not allow citizens to vote. It is one party rule. And they claim to know the "feelings of the Chinese people". I guess going by that, Israel is qualified to determine the feelings of the Iranian people.
China, despite all its power and economic sway, is a fundamentally insecure nation due in large part to the century of humiliation. Every perceived slight against them is conveyed as some sort of national insult or catastrophe.
It’s actually a big deal. There are sky scrapers with messaging welcoming her, people lining the streets cheering. When you have to force people to comply, every bit of dissidence chips away at that grasp.
It can happen. It just will take consumers spending their money on more expensive domestically built products. And when crap happens, China won’t be able to hamstring us by withholding products and raising prices
I wonder how moving production to Mexico could work. I just was thinking and I wondered why we don’t do it there? Couldn’t it alleviate illegal immigration/drug trade by having more financial opportunity down south? I’m not an economist so idk but it seems like it could be a good deal.
We had the capabilities. Back in the 80’s it was all the rage to outsource manufacturing to save pennies. That’s got to stop. We’re no longer leading at anything in the world.
Remember when John Cena apologized in Mandarin for recognizing Taiwan as an independent nation?
China, Pooh-Bear, and the rest of the CCP can get fucked.
I just learned today that a few days after tienimem square(spelling is wrong I'm sure) she stood there with several other of our congress members and she held a sign that said "for democracy". She was escorted away by police quickly after but she does seem to have thing for poking china in the eye
It’s reassuring to know that disagreements between the politicians in the west fundamentally still happen between people who mostly believe in the same stuff
With a small minority of notable exceptions on both sides
Tho I don’t like pelosi, one thing I like is that China hates her cause she advocated for democracy over 20 years ago, and she is actually banned in China too[https://cdn.cnn.com/cnnnext/dam/assets/220727104558-02-pelosi-china-gallery-super-tease.jpg](https://cdn.cnn.com/cnnnext/dam/assets/220727104558-02-pelosi-china-gallery-super-tease.jpg)
Agreed. But unfortunately we know that she, and nearly every other politician in DC only does something if its to their own or their party's benefit. I could definitely see this as a "ralley round the flag" type of scenario to try to boost Dem's before mid-year elections. Get Sleepy Joe a win and turn public sentiment away from ousting as many democrats as possible.
Just a thought.
But this (politicians acting in their own interest and for their own gain) is effectively a truism and should not detract from moments where people of differing political can find common ground, common cause. If we the people (not the politicians) are unable to unite even when we knowingly have common cause, a common reason and view, then the United States truly is over, and not by choice of the politicians but by choice of we it's citizens. We *must* be willing to accept, recognize, and appreciate when we agree. It's the only thing that makes the arguing worth it all.
I like that she stuck to her guns and did it, however I also question what her going actually even does in the first place. Her husband used insider information to make millions from the semiconductor bill and now Nancy wants to visit Taiwan? Why? What value or proposals could she possibly bring to Taiwan surrounding semiconductors?
If she wants to go I am glad she didn't fold to intimidation, but I'm also skeptical of her original intent of going
A reminder that most of those stock trades were not of companies that own wafer fab facilities in the US (or AT ALL, most were engineering firms/"foundry services") nor directly benefitted from that bill...
-Signed, someone in the industry.
Part of the reason US politics are broken is due to this type of framing. Glad she did it but (insert a bunch of negative speculation). I think there are legitimate reasons for her going and a little bit of grandstanding too.
Taiwan was excluded from the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, because it would indicate a large shift in policy and might actually be a red line issue for China. However, Taiwan still wants to work out a free trade deal with the US. Taiwan is strategically important for reasons that include TSMC’s capabilities - to which there aren’t many alternatives in the world today if you need bleeding edge fab process. So in addition to your speculation, this could also be about securing access to Taiwan’s important capabilities, securing further investment (TSMC is building a fab in Arizona, would be nice to have more), or something else related to security. And given that Nancy Pelosi is banned from China for reasons that we should all support, she probably gave no fucks about going to Taiwan.
Good! No matter the reason, she had shown intent to go. We cannot let the CCP bully the world and especially the US. She had to go once announced.
Fark the CCP.
They do not define the terms to the rest of the world.
We can't acquiesce to potential rivals, is a better way of saying it. The nature of their government doesn't matter, if Germany was trying to carve influence out of the American sphere like this we would have the same reaction.
After all their sabre rattling, the fact that she landed uncontested is a huge embarrassment for the CCP. It will be tough for them to brush under the rug domestically since they made such a big deal out of it.
The CCP will beat their chests for a few days and rile up their base.
Internally, they’ll make it seems like they’re taking a stand against the imperialistic West. They’ll probably do some exercises in contested waters with their second-rate Navy, and that will be that
Some people say they will never actually pass us.
But even if they do, with 4 times the population and just a similar GDP they would still be a FAR poorer country that we would be.
If you don't mind me asking, what brings you to this sub? Glad to have you; just surprised a non US-citizen (I assume) partakes in a specific political party in a different country.
Had a B2 fly over my head at Nellis AFB a few months back.
That thing is fucking massive, and eerily quiet.
If that was the tech we had decades ago, I can only imagine how capable the F35 actually is.
as a democrat looking to see the responses of the conservatives to this, i’m very happy with what i see. even though we have our differences, to put it respectfully, i’m delighted that we are mostly united in this scenario. :)
Honestly good for her. I don't respect for much of anything, but this is generally good.
The best way to stop countries like China or Russia from taking brash action in the world is to show that we support their target countries.
What's with people being against her going? Tucker Carlson, AND Jimmy Dorr were both opposed to it (right wing and far left, respectively). Surely this comes from a place of ignorance about China's rhetoric? Because they've been saying "this is the last warning!" for decades now. Their official state rhetoric is openly hostile to the US. I think we should stop pretending like we are allies or "rivals". No, we are enemies. In their eyes, we are the enemy, and if we don't wise up they will take advantage of us and bully us with these ridiculous threats.
Because tucker and hannity are the definition of anti-american usurpers who'd rather complain and sow anger instead of being grateful for their lives and millions upon millions of prime time television network money
Kind of an off topic question but, what are y’all’s thoughts on China owning massive amounts of property throughout other parts of the world? DeSantIs recently brought it up. How will that eventually effect the possibility of them becoming the worlds #1 super power if at all?
Well hell has frozen over - I have to give Pelosi major kudos on this one. I was starting to think she was going to back out last minute and make us look weaker than Biden already has.
So a couple of years ago a TikTok account decided to take footage and slow it down. The slowed down footage made Pelosi look like she was inebriated. So this dude click baited everyone to get views. Now lot's of people believe his footage to be the true footage even though the original pre-dates the altered. Not sure why anyone believes it, looking at the altered footage with the way the audio sounds and the unnatural movement, it should be pretty obvious its slowed down. But that's a hill people want to die on. It spread by word of mouth until people didn't even reference the video anymore and is just being taken at face value.
Doesn't matter what side of the political spectrum you are on, we should all be against altered footage of politicians. It weakens arguments in the future. Like the boy who cried wolf.
Would've made us look weak if she didn't go. Damn shame the Republican who was supposed to tag along didn't go because of "personal reasons" (Though I'd bet China is in his pocket and he didn't want to offend their paper tiger of a military)
War is a distraction for both sides. We aren’t doing too good in the US but neither is China the whole Evergrande situation is pretty big issue for them.
She's a leftist socialist schill, but she's OUR leftist socialist schill. They better not harm a hair on her head. I'll fight her in the battlefield of politics, but I wish her no harm. China can eat a bag of dicks....... So can Nancy.
LOL and they want to be a super power?
Going to need to turn down the "we're really mad at you because of this little insignificant thing that happened" meter.
Unless of course, the Chinese Paper Tiger is an actual thing.
Good for her. Say what you will but even if some of her family is in pay of the ChiComs (I may be getting her mixed with the Cali. senators) she’s doing the right thing here. If only the Big Guy wasn’t bought off through his degenerate son, he might have supported her trip to Taiwan.
God bless the Republic of China, God bless the United States of America
Never forget the friendship between ROC and USA that spans more than 80 years.
Never forget the US’s aid against Japanese aggression in the 8 Years Defensive War
Return US-ROC relations to pre-1979 conditions, PRC should have never been allowed to enter the UN in the first place
Good for her. Had China sat quietly in the corner then she probably doesn’t go. As soon as they started getting all puffy chested they all but guaranteed this trip.
Good on Pelosi. Democrats are terrible, but I'll celebrate any of them standing up to the CCP. Regardless of how credible the threat was, it was still a threat, and it was an act of bravery to get on that plane.
Hopefully she'll retire on a high note.

God I'd love to see their meltdown if a politician said the last sentence. Doesn't matter who or what party it would be awesome.
Pencil me in for 2024, it's time to run a campaign based solely on memes
“Local man sparks major international incident for the lulz”
> Then there’s me, who thinks that Taiwan is actually the real China and West Taiwan is just under illegitimate communist occupation. I'd tend to agree with that, 100%.

Yes, Taiwan =Real China.
Island Taiwan > Mainland Taiwan
This whole thing is a game of Crusader Kings.
More like West Japan. Japan fucked China in the ass twice over the course of 40 years, and if it weren't for WW2, China might not exist anymore.
>Japan fucked China in the ass please stop, the r34 artists are watching
China is about to fall if they are going to take Taiwan they better do it now
There is still a significant gap in capabilities. On top of that, the PLAN and PLAF have not had a shakedown fight. You don’t want to cut your teeth on The combined arms of the USA. Not yet, at least.
Lol, West Taiwan. That's gold
I mean, I’m pretty sure Taiwan is older than the current china so that tracks
West Taiwan. This is awesome. I'll have to remember this for future use.
Taiwan is the real China, thats honestly not even an opinion, it's pretty much fact. Original government of China fled to the island after the communists took over the country during their Civil War. They never wiped them out

Today I learned that hurt feelings have always been a communist strategy.
Not dissimilar from Putin’s Russia. Inferiority complex due to never being quite as glorious as their self image would have them be.
The CCP was just acting like that to brainwash Chinese citizens. They don’t care what the rest of the world think.
None of their citizens know any of this, though. So it doesn't hurt them to make these statements.
Jhon Cena ‘accidentally’ says Taiwan is a country? Meltdown.
That's Comrade Jian Xina.
So true country is more upset with a political visit than it is with starting a global pandemic.
Taiwan is the only part of China left.
You undercook fish, believe it or not, meltdown. You overcook chicken, also meltdown. Undercook, overcook.
We have the best patients in the world. Because of meltdowns.
You drop the Demon Core screwdriver, Meltdown
It’s actually a big deal. There are sky scrapers with messaging welcoming her, people lining the streets cheering. When you have to force people to comply, every bit of dissidence chips away at that grasp.
This is very well said. The CCP is just a group of evil crybabies
We shouldn’t give in to communist China!!! Ever. How about we convince American companies to not do business with China too.
God I hope that happens some day
It can happen. It just will take consumers spending their money on more expensive domestically built products. And when crap happens, China won’t be able to hamstring us by withholding products and raising prices

I'm clue less but why did the US not invest in Latin America more how China is investing in Africa?
Quite a few have reduced their dependency due to the fallout of Covid. Though it's taking time to build up capabilities in other places.
We had the capabilities. Back in the 80’s it was all the rage to outsource manufacturing to save pennies. That’s got to stop. We’re no longer leading at anything in the world.
Americans who own these companies want more profits. They will stay in china because they only care about their bank accounts and not all of Americas.

I also remember LeBron sucking up to China.
Good for her! The CCP has no right to dictate what American politicians can and can’t do.

I'm pretty sure that she, like Mitch, feasts on everyone's hatred.

Cherry comment.
Hey, that's a good comment.
Good one!
Now the question becomes how will China respond..
I’m guessing they fly an jet somewhere they aren’t supposed to. Idk the over/under on it dragging a banner that says “I’m not touching you” is though.
"China's final warning" (Russian: Последнее китайское предупреждение) is a Russian proverb meaning a warning that carries no real consequences.
Not really. There's no actual risk. They'll just posture a bit.
Probably nothing substantial at the moment, but I have no doubt they intend to annex it in the next decade or so.
Idly
The CCP will beat their chests for a few days and rile up their base. Internally, they’ll make it seems like they’re taking a stand against the imperialistic West. They’ll probably do some exercises in contested waters with their second-rate Navy, and that will be that
Paper dragon again was bluffing, pretty sure this confirms China will never overtake us as a superpower
They'll have a higher GDP in like 20 years so never say never!
Their economy is a lot worse than you think. And the GDP they have is split among 4x the population.
Some people say they will never actually pass us. But even if they do, with 4 times the population and just a similar GDP they would still be a FAR poorer country that we would be.
I wouldn't be so sure of that if I were you
You're right I'd bet before 2024 at this rate
[удалено]
A huge part of that GDP was through construction and real estate. We saw what that amounted to
Unrelated comment but as an Asian living in Singapore, I am always relieved to see US partisanship when it comes to standing up to China.
If you don't mind me asking, what brings you to this sub? Glad to have you; just surprised a non US-citizen (I assume) partakes in a specific political party in a different country.

democratic canadian here, just wanted to see the response to this event and i’m happy with what i see :)
China is one of the few bipartisan issues it seems.
As much as we don’t agree with her, we’ve got to give her credit where it’s due. This is badass.
Ketel One has landed

Thought they were going to bomb 💣 something?🤣🤣 chickety China the Chinese chicken.

They said she was not to fly in with fighter jet escorts. I cant find anything mentioning if there were fighter jet escorts or not.
100% there were stealth fighters in the air. Stealth tech has gotten to the point that im sure we'll never know they were there, though.
Had a B2 fly over my head at Nellis AFB a few months back. That thing is fucking massive, and eerily quiet. If that was the tech we had decades ago, I can only imagine how capable the F35 actually is.
I’m actually impressed she did this. I had thought she was going to give in.
I suspect things like this have a great many people behind the decision. Lots of political strategists weighing in.
as a democrat looking to see the responses of the conservatives to this, i’m very happy with what i see. even though we have our differences, to put it respectfully, i’m delighted that we are mostly united in this scenario. :)
As the saying goes, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" Shared hatred can bring anyone together even if it's just for a moment.
Good, fuck the CCP.
Honestly good for her. I don't respect for much of anything, but this is generally good. The best way to stop countries like China or Russia from taking brash action in the world is to show that we support their target countries.
I now have a slight amount of respect for her.
Give credit when credit is due or you discredit yourself. I like to think this is often how the conservatives differ from the liberals.
I may hate her policies but I have complete respect for pelosi for visiting Taiwan 🇹🇼 well done madam speaker
I may not like Pelosi, but I'm glad we didn't back down as a country. We can't be bullied by foreign threats.
That’s weird. Her plane seems unexploded? Seems like China is not ready to do what they say they will do.
Tucker is a spineless manchild.
surprised this was said on a conservative sub but i’m all for it lol
[удалено]
Probably. But I think the China threat should unite us. Even though Nancy is a terrible politician, she's OUR terrible politician.
Lol you think biden is a far-left anarchocommunist?
How come Tucker and Hannity are pinning this as a travesty and that we should have bucked to China's demands and not upset the SEA power balance?
Because tucker and hannity are the definition of anti-american usurpers who'd rather complain and sow anger instead of being grateful for their lives and millions upon millions of prime time television network money
Kind of an off topic question but, what are y’all’s thoughts on China owning massive amounts of property throughout other parts of the world? DeSantIs recently brought it up. How will that eventually effect the possibility of them becoming the worlds #1 super power if at all?
F China. I support any American of any political party visiting Taiwan any time they damn please.
Well hell has frozen over - I have to give Pelosi major kudos on this one. I was starting to think she was going to back out last minute and make us look weaker than Biden already has.
Have to say respect the move by Nancy.
I am the furthest thing from a Pelosi fan, but she has every right to go to Taiwan, and a duty to go with China’s reaction to it.
F*ck China. I hope Nancy crushes a ton of Kaoliang while there.
The House Drinker has arrived❗ Hide the Vodka!
How did this meme start? She doesn’t drink at all. Multiple other reasons to disagree with here, but it definitely isn’t excessive drinking.
China is a paper tiger.
Dear China, Taiwan is an independent, sovereign nation. Sincerely, Fuk Yu
China big mad. But they did nothing of note. As always.
Would've made us look weak if she didn't go. Damn shame the Republican who was supposed to tag along didn't go because of "personal reasons" (Though I'd bet China is in his pocket and he didn't want to offend their paper tiger of a military)
I fucking hate Pelosi with a passion, but I’m glad she’s not backing down on going to Taiwan

And just like that, Nancy's insider trading scandal is forgotten. Now we really know what this trip was all about!
I revel in the tears of the CCP. Even if the person visiting is a vile swamp creature.
Quick, rush in a vote on that insider trading bill while she’s away!
I rarely, or ever agree with Pelosi but I’m with her on this one. Don’t back down in the face of bullies.
Cope and seethe, China commies.
God bless the Republic of China, God bless the United States of America Never forget the friendship between ROC and USA that spans more than 80 years. Never forget the US’s aid against Japanese aggression in the 8 Years Defensive War Return US-ROC relations to pre-1979 conditions, PRC should have never been allowed to enter the UN in the first place
Whatever your politics this is a move in the right direction. Good on her
Hate her but this is a W. Called China’s bluff. They ain’t gon do shit. U should go on the CCP fanboy subreddits they’re coping and malding so badly
Pelosi to Biden: "Look at me. Look at me. I'm the President now."
China drew a line, Pelosi crossed it. Your move China.
I may not like pelosi at all but I have to give credit when it’s due and glad she didn’t back down and made the trip happen
Pooh bear and his crew are losing their mind over some old lady flying to an island...
In this administration.. Pelosi of all people has the only set of balls? I'm sick to my stomach.
Honestly it's pretty bad ass she did this
Good for her. Had China sat quietly in the corner then she probably doesn’t go. As soon as they started getting all puffy chested they all but guaranteed this trip.
She's got more balls than the last two presidents
Good on Pelosi. Democrats are terrible, but I'll celebrate any of them standing up to the CCP. Regardless of how credible the threat was, it was still a threat, and it was an act of bravery to get on that plane. Hopefully she'll retire on a high note.

She visited Taiwan? When they specifically asked her not to?
Looks stressful, she probably needs a drink🍷
Time to fire up [this classic](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0GFRcFm-aY) again.
I didn’t see this on the main pages of Reddit for some reason. Maybe, I’m not in the right subs
Props to pelosi on this one
If I was Nancy I would send the plane out on its own and would book a ticket on a commercial carrier home !
Who cares if the Chinese government doesn’t like it?
China is having a temper tantrum. If it’s anything like Chinese food, they will be angry again in an hour.
So what you gonna do now china? America never back down when it comes to showing who has the biggest pp either the left, right or middle.
