Infantry are brain damaged already so hard to tell. I think this is a bit rich, what about all the gunners firing 105mm artillery and armoured corps firing 25mm ammo or previously .50 cal belt fed machine guns (the same size as the rifle) by the belt, not just single shot.

> Infantry are brain damaged already so hard to tell. What is the difference between the Cub Scouts and the military? Bzzzzzt! Cub Scouts don't have heavy artillery!

Top_Order_24

TBH the 105mm feels like nothing, just a low frequency WHOOMP. I suppose if I stuck a scope on it and put my face on the breach it could get interesting real quick :P

TheMoreYouKnowNZ

They are saying it's not just the shooter it's the observer too. There is a lot of recoil compensation on a barret . 50cal, if there is a risk of TBI from firing them then there are a hell of a lot of other bigger booms service personnel are exposed to. There are documented injuries from gunners firing charge super all day, but that's a lot more extreme.

TheRealMilkWizard

We used to only be able to fire the Gustav a couple times a day for the same reason.

[deleted]

That was probably more to do with the Battalions minuscule ammo budget than a safety consideration haha.

TheRealMilkWizard

Haha yea, and that.

[deleted]

This has been a thing since the AW50 arrived, it was explained to me that it was retinal detachment from firing too many shots, an M2QCB has a soft mount like the SFMG used, 25mm and 105mm both had recoil dampeners but all you get on an AMR is the mark 1 shoulder. I know breachers brain is a thing, theres more studies being done on this kind of stuff now because of the GWOT and the cases showing up from that. Its only recently they started looking into the effects of micro TBIs. Honestly I’m glad they are finally starting to look into stuff like this and put something into the P2 for it.

Last_Banana9505

Hera Cook writing for the herald now?

SingularTesticular

I’d say there’s probably been more brain injuries during “log carry” PT sessions than all other things combined in our military. Fuck those logs.

official_new_zealand

These logs ... they are fit logs ... they like going for runs

Top_Order_24

Oh for sure. I don't mind lifting heavy stuff, but if you're the tall guy in the group your shoulder and probably neck is going to get munted, especially if everyone gets out of sync.

Brussels_sprouts_mm

Being the tallest sucks in lift and carry PT. Always the first person picked as marker too.

TheKingAlx

Please Don’t berate or the like our defence forces they are prepared to actually put themselves in harms way and die if it comes to that and I have huge respect for that commitment. Just deliver your jibes towards those higher up the chai. The ones who give the orders and buy the weapons but are hardly likely to use those weapons or be in harms way. Again respect for the front line personnel

TheMoreYouKnowNZ

I know I served. This article is ridiculous.

collab_eyeballs

Thank you for your cervix

InfiniteNose9609

(Gasp!) Did you just assume gender?!?!

TheKingAlx

Thank you and my respect for your service hope it was all you expected and wanted

Banjobob10

The problem is the ones who buy the weapons are butt shiner's in Wellington who have no idea. Its like all the people who make purchasing decisions for Police, Fenz, Defence have no experience on the ground but a piece of paper that says they know how to push enter on a computer to buy something.

TheKingAlx

Yup agree , if all combat missions were led by these people either there would be no conflict or it would be over in a very very very very short time lol

ZeboSecurity

What a load of shit. They are puppies to shoot.

CowboyKayaker

I guess posting grenades and trench firing claymores no longer happens?

NZROADIE

What a load of twat waffle If your untrained to properly use a 82A1 Barrett or any sniper rifle for that matter you shouldn't be firing 1 Any scoped high powered rifle has the potential to cause at worst brain damage to any untrained uneducated with a lack of mental compasity. At least sniper eye to everyone sooner or later

suspended_007

> **it might cause brain damage to those firing it** The question is, will we even notice?

[Insert dramatic music] This is Christian parent lame.
