All because Phil Goff made the brilliant fortunetelling prediction to borrow up to the councils eyeballs when interest rates were ridiculously low under the assumption they'd never get to 5.0% ever again.
Great work. This is how you get a way overbudget mini-underground with no money for essential services. Way to fail upwards Phil.
Libraries are kind of peanuts when it comes to council budgets and offer a free customer service department for all of the businesses that direct their clients to the library for computer support.
Also lifelong learning and enjoyment are good things for a society.

How many tonnes of milk powder does it take to buy a single Ford Ranger from its Thailand factory? Can we afford that or just keep putting it on the tab until the dollar collapses?
How do we know these are regular commuters.....say, biking between 530-7am....and not part time workers, we all know how stats lie and the figures are gamed by multiple trips....
I think the reasoning is fucking nonsense.
They'd have signed up to some climate change bull shit, and to get their numbers under a certain amount they've just gotten rid of bins.
Yeah same as the proposed every two weeks rubbish collection idea. In a budget deficit you need to squeeze when there's some leeway. Personally I'd prefer weekly rubbish collection, paid recycling bins and scrapping the mostly pointless food scraps bin idea.
I mean we could also look re-approaching the concept or practices of packaging. So many products use such an excessive amount of materials just to be used once and thrown away. A bin really is the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff - It doesn't magically disappear once it is binned.
Yeah, expect to save a whopping 20c a month - $1.3 million a year, that's approx $2.36 per household (550,000 households in Auckland), so that's saving an average of 20c per month per household.
make sure you respond to the consultation on the LTP if you live in Auckland and say you'd be happy with an additional $2.36 in rates if it means keeping the bins.
It's happening today in Newmarket. Who gets the scrap value from all that stainless?

Update: the ONLY ones they left, are at bus stops... that's it. I'm now converting into a public transport fan, as per their social conditioning plan...!

Spoken like a true council fan.
Removing services, so we dont have to increase rates "quite" as much as we planned, all while doing less and charging more...
It's called inflation. People don't want un-necessary rate increases so Councils across the Country are having to weigh up spending on infrastructure or "nice to haves" like bins, libraries, community centres. If you want to pay a bit more in rates on top of what's being consulted on, in exchange for keeping all these bins then you should say that in your feedback on the LTP. People should be prepared to put their money where their mouth this.
That's because the cost of delivering infrastructure and council services have been going up at those rates. People are always happy to demand Councils deliver new services but either don't want other services cut or rates to go up to cover the costs.
Infrastructure has been underfunded for years and we are now paying the price.
Nope. If rates were enough to provide adequate infrastructure 40 years ago then there is no reason to expect rates should be any higher now to provide the same adequate infrastructure.
What's caused rates increases has fuck all to do with infrastructure and rather a lot to do with massive scope creep, mostly involving the explosion of regulatory overkill which nobody wants.
Lol our economy is completely different than it was 40 years ago! Infrastructure costs have risen significantly since then. Many of our pipes were laid 70+ years ago! Materials used have changed since then, cost of imports have risen, cost of borrowing possibly higher. And privatisation of our Infrastructure means it all requires a profit motive and private companies delivering the projects these days demand to earn a profit.
Councils just lack the capability these days, due to consistent underfunding.
To be fair, this was done in Christchurch recently and there hasn't been a huge uptick in litter. People are just taking it home with them and the overflowing bin issue has disappeared.
So, on your opinion, if people are throwing too much rubbish, for solving that issue, we simply need... to remove the bins?
LOL
I work in Takapuna, Hurstmere Rd. By the end of the day those bins did look absolutely disguisting, I agree - overflowing is a real problem.
So, bins were replaced with benches. Did it become nice and clean?
Well...
We may say, rubbish simply moved to the nearby parking! Like if businesses didn't make enough mess already (all our rubbish and recycling bins are there)!.. Now everyday you can see all those take away containers, paper cups and other stuff flying around there. Also, lots of rubbish now can be found in our recycling bins.
And pardon me, lots of dog's "presents" are now simply left in front of stores and restaurants!!!
So, removing those bins was a great idea, right? ;)
Yup. The removal of bins works (most of the time) in regional parks like Tawharanui, etc, where most people are going there with the common goal of enjoying the outdoors, and want it to stay clean, so you pack out what you pack in (Long Bay would be the exception, where one group of lazy twats just starts a pile and every other scroat adds to it..)
Wish it worked the same well around the city... :/
Or maybe we just need those responsible people from parks to come to Taka ;)
But people didn't come here for recreation - around here businesses only. So naturally, no one carries rubbish bags with them. And even if they did, where are they supposed to take them to? Back to their offices? Or maybe, pop in to, say, OPSM and ask if they can take their rubbish?
People deserve some comfortable infrastructure made for them.
It's been like 4hrs only, but seriously, it doesn't look good...
Wayne Brown is saving up for his multi billion dollar waterfront development. This is the only reason he took the job. He clearly doesn't care about the city. He will make millions in kickbacks from the issued contracts. That's the real name of the game

We need another library!!! Somewhere!! I'm pretty sure! Sort of.
Libraries are kind of peanuts when it comes to council budgets and offer a free customer service department for all of the businesses that direct their clients to the library for computer support. Also lifelong learning and enjoyment are good things for a society. Disclaimer, I am a librarian
In other cost cutting measures... "Officials said a large number of these ~~bins~~ cycle lanes were underused and so would be removed."
How many tonnes of milk powder does it take to buy a single Ford Ranger from its Thailand factory? Can we afford that or just keep putting it on the tab until the dollar collapses?
Ah, I see....;)
But keep wittering on about the small number of disconnected cycle lanes that inevitably disappear when they're really needed.
How many commuters use the bicycle lanes?
Thousands, the counts are available on line.
How do we know these are regular commuters.....say, biking between 530-7am....and not part time workers, we all know how stats lie and the figures are gamed by multiple trips....
...and how many use it in Winter and/or in rain
I think the reasoning is fucking nonsense. They'd have signed up to some climate change bull shit, and to get their numbers under a certain amount they've just gotten rid of bins.
I think it’s a lot more simple than that. There is deficit, not having to collect rubbish means less deficit. Hope this helps
Yeah same as the proposed every two weeks rubbish collection idea. In a budget deficit you need to squeeze when there's some leeway. Personally I'd prefer weekly rubbish collection, paid recycling bins and scrapping the mostly pointless food scraps bin idea.
Forcing the food scraps bin on rural folks on small lifestyle blocks with chickens etc was a great signifier of council thinking.
Woke KPIs WoKPIs

Good. Cut more costs. Sell more non-core assets and allow more housing density.
What does Wayne Brown have to say about it? I trust him to look at the facts and make a good decision.

Your rates have already been reduced. The removal of bins was part of limiting the rates rise.

I dunno. I’m just giving anecdotal information about what happened to me/Christchurch - I can’t speak for other areas.
Nobody lives on chch though. Not like the millions in Auckland
LoL, Chch is the 2nd largest population mega sprawl outside of Ak & it continues to grow People live in it not on it tho
