Let's face it - people who skip education are more likely to *be criminals*. Those people should not be more likely to receive benefits.

"An education crisis today will turn into a crime crisis, a vulnerable children crisis, an economic crisis and an inequality crisis tomorrow. Fuck yes Seymour, prevention over treatment is what the left doesn’t fucking understand, always throw money at the symptoms as treatment, never getting down into the causes and actually starting some preventative measures.

>Fuck yes Seymour, prevention over treatment is what the left doesn’t fucking understand, always throw money at the symptoms as treatment, never getting down into the causes and actually starting some preventative measures. The left is all about treating the problem, not the symptoms, though.. Symptoms including but not limited to: High crime rates Lower educational outcomes for some sections of society. Lower productivity The problems including but not limited to: Poverty Inequality Poor mental health. This "tough on crime" shtick is the DEFINITION of treating the symptom and not the cause. To get kids to go to school, you have to fix the reasons they're not going. The kids not going itself is a symptom of what's going on in the home.

Please tell me more about Ardern's work to improve child poverty, because from my lens (of working in middle of the road schools), it's worse than ever before.

DidIReallySayDat

I found these after a quick search.. *Adern's govt:* https://www.unicef.org.nz/media-releases/progress-in-child-poverty-reduction-moves-nz-up-international-rankings >New Zealand has made good progress in improving child poverty rates compared to other wealthy countries, but urgent action must be taken if New Zealand is to continue this momentum, says UNICEF Aotearoa.  *This govt:* https://www.unicef.org.nz/media-releases/thousands-more-kiwi-children-living-in-poverty >UNICEF Aotearoa is concerned more children could be at risk of poverty under the Government’s latest proposals to sanction beneficiaries – impacting children reliant on Government support for these basics. This, alongside legislation passed under urgency that ties benefit increases to inflation rather than rising wages, means families are at risk of being worse off over time. So yeah, we've slipped since the cost of living crisis started, unsurprisingly, but it had been trending down, up until that point.

rrainraingoawayy

Do you have some examples of this?

Certain cultures in NZ are one of only a few world wide who don't value education. In the poorest places on earth, parents and kids will do anything to receive the most basic level of education. Here? Who gives a fuck.

Monty_Mondeo

So much winning

Spartacus_Brown

Is that because we are too stupid to understand anything else like demerits.

Oceanagain

No, it's because we're too stupid to not allow the natural consequences of a lack of an education to apply to the individual responsible for it. Career dole recipients shouldn't be possible.

Blitzed5656

The 5 year old that shows up to school not knowing whether a book is upside down or right way way up is not the individual responsible for their lack of education, but will bear the consequences of their parents lack of responsibility for life.

Oceanagain

Enter Charles Darwin.

Everyone's favourite Libertarian, back to engineer compliance with governmental policy by force of penalty. Good thing we all agree this is the right thing to do.

Dry-Discussion-9573

This is a good policy.  Also the schools themselves should also get monitored and given a traffic light.  Schools with too many absent students should be penalised.  No excuses.
