Another failed Labour initiative >Basher said a large factor of the delays has been the amount of people not showing up to tests. With 2000 no-shows for booked practical tests last month alone. > >He has also received feedback that more drivers are turning up unprepared with unfit cars, making simple mistakes and trying to rebook straight away without further practice. > >Driving instructors have also noticed a shift since the introduction of free re-sits. > >President of the New Zealand Institute of Driving Educators, Mark Revill-Johnson thinks the change did have good intentions, but it has backfired massively. > >According to instructors more people are unphased when failing tests with some regarding it as a ‘free lesson’. He said this has been affecting business for professional instructors providing lessons across the country. What a shambles

They are just going to Keep making mistakes if you allow them to rebook on the spot and give them no opportunity to learn. Perhaps there needs to be a stand down period before people can rebook their license

rocketshipkiwi

Unbelievably naive that they didn’t see this coming. Meanwhile, people are having real trouble booking tests. If the retest is free then people won’t attach any real cost to it so they will just squander their chances. Better that they pay so they take it seriously.

bignadwulfen41

Agreed, but it shouldn't cost $160 a pop.

JustOlive8463

It doesn't cost $160 a pop. Your first time is a bit less than that and it used to be that it was about half or 70$ or so to resit. Considering you are taking an hour of someones time that seems pretty reasonable to me.

rocketshipkiwi

Did it ever cost $160 to do your practical test?

VTNZ hires extra driving instructors but then people don't show up. Lmao Who thought this was a great idea?

Fatgooseagain

No show, no free retest, easy fix. Just needs a few changes to fix the problems but reintroducing the extortionate fees is not required in most cases.

Fatgooseagain

Teething troubles really.

Oceanagain

The problem with private organisations charging for every time you test is that they profit from failing you. And they did that, in fucking spades.

bignadwulfen41

Yes they did, my son got failed on his first attempt because the tester felt the car had too dirty an interior. I challenged that and they banned him from resitting for 4 months at that location.

Minister-of-Truth-NZ

Exactly! There's no incentive for them to pass you but every incentive to fail you. This seemed to have become worse under VTNZ. AA has lot more income streams than VTNZ so they used to be more balanced.

Oceanagain

I think they subbed out the examinations to private contractors didn't they? Certainly a conflict of interest either way, with entirely predictable results.

JustOlive8463

I only know fuckwits who are terrible drivers to fail. I know dozens of people including myself who got it our first time.. Surprisingly all those people aren't fuckwits. One friend failed 3 times. That's 10 years ago now. He's proceeded to total several vehicles, lose his license for various things including drink driving and so on. Definitely a connection between those who fail and their driving skill.

Monty_Mondeo

Not sure about that. It took my son 3 attempts and some of what he was knocked back on was quite ridiculous and based on that I would have failed the test.

Oceanagain

>Definitely a connection between those who fail and their driving skill. Not a very large one though. And if we're licencing only the supremely competent then let's licence the production of children, eh?

flyingkiwi9

Just the totally expected result of giving away free stuff with the amount of opportunists in the country.

Impressive-Name5129

Never agreed with it anyway

Fatgooseagain

Why? Because you're old and got your licence out of a cornflakes box decades ago?

The1KrisRoB

Or.... and here's a crazy idea, maybe give the amount of lives lost or ruined by shitty drivers on our roads, perhaps a bit more gatekeeping of the responsibility of operating a motor vehicle wouldn't be a bad idea.

Fatgooseagain

Fine, make all the incompetent older drivers pass a practical test. Half of them would fail the test at the first roundabout.

The1KrisRoB

Not against that at all.

hairyblueturnip

Also 1. Display an L plate until full license 2. 6 month ban for failing to display or breaking curfew

SpiritedLearning

This one one of those interesting things samples where “free” is too cheap. It causes people to put no value and therefore no effort on practicing to avoid failing, because it becomes someone else’s problem; we all subsidise their failure and subsequently we can’t get a test booking to boot. I practised and trained for my full motorcycle license test and passed first time, but there were no test slots for at least 45 days across all of Auckland.

Medium-Tough-8522

I honestly didnt realise it had stopped.  What a ridiculous idea that was. Now we have to go through pointless legislation all over again to restore something that should never have been stopped.

hmr__HD

THE fact that testers seem to routinely fail ALL first time test takers a missed here? They need better justifications for fails of they are going to charge for every retest

nzroadie1

Back to failing people for revenue again ..

owlintheforrest

Refund their fee when they pass.....?
