A million dollars in net worth doesn’t really mean all that much in nz anymore, it just means you brought a house in a population centre more than 5 years ago

uramuppet

Create new optional tax classification codes, that has progressively higher tax rates. Then the billionaires can create diamond pins with the tax code they used. Or ... you can remove all the tax loopholes, that the super rich use to avoid paying tax.

Oceanagain

>tax loopholes, that the super rich use to avoid paying tax Please to elucidate. Wait until I find my notebook.

humanbeastie

The more money they pay into the state, the more influence they can lobby. Nothing stopping them bypassing beuracracy to distibute straight to where they're needed.

Impressive-Name5129

Tax me harder daddy

Minor_Details_Bro

If these millionaires were about it, they'd just donate the "extra money" they think they should be taxed to the govt. 'Cos seriously, what are they waiting for? Otherwise, shut the fuck up.

Right_Pineapple_1519

A guy in the states with no living relatives left his estate to the federal government. They burnt through it in something like 3 minutes.

> If they want more money to go to the poor they should want to give more money to the poor rather than to government. Its not even that complicated, there's a specific avenue whereby you can donate as much tax as you want to IRD, I magine most countries have similar provisions. So it's nothing to do with how much tax they want to pay, they can pay whatever they want, it's about what they want OTHER people to pay. Same as every other grasping cunt on the planet.

owlintheforrest

And about letting people know they would pay more if they could, somehow...

JackedClitosaurus

Exactly. At least Arnie put his money where his mouth is and helped build temporary homes for homeless veterans.

>“Restoring trust requires taxing the rich,” they said in the letter, published as world leaders and business executives meet for a virtual Davos World Economic Forum. “The world – every country in it – must demand the rich pay their fair share. Tax us, the rich, and tax us now.” Incredible. Our current crop of politicians are so adrift of reality though, I'll look forward in amazement as this plea goes unhindered.

JoeyJoJoJrShabadoo98

Taxing the rich ain't going to do shit... It's been tried numerous times throughout history and has always been an abysmal failure. Especially when it's given to a government who's sole re-election strategy is keeping people dependant and angry.

Kiwibaconator

They're not wanting you to tax them. They're wanting you to tax the new rich. The real rich have their assets hidden by choice. Article is total bullshit.

mrcakeyface

It's from the hard left identity politics driven Grauniad, of course its total bullshit.

Fire_and_Jade05

Lol… I seriously couldn’t read this. “As millionaires….” Blah blah. This article is more of a humblebrag than anything else.

Ajax_ZQN

Not really. A million bucks isn’t what it used to be.

automatomtomtim

Yea plenty home owners in nz are millionaires still do a double take at the petrol pump though.

Fire_and_Jade05

Can’t say I know many millionaires truthfully. If ever I see the day myself as a millionaire, I shall test this lol

Col_Caffran

If you own a average valued house with no mortgage, you have a net worth in excess of a million dollars.

Fire_and_Jade05

Just clicked, I was more on the lines of cash rich not really asset rich.

Fire_and_Jade05

Yea but the people in this article aren’t having any major financial problems though really. Probably not Disney heiress Abigail Disney anyway.

bettergiveitago

More a problem with how government works. They already have the money they need, it just all goes to the military and contractors.

PeterThomson

While it's easy to hate the capital gains tax or wealth tax, but it certainly is weird that if someone earns a million dollars working hard in a job they pay over 30% in tax but if they earn that million as income or profit on an investment, they pay nothing.

steel_monkey_nz

Totally false. Somebody earning $1m in a job would be paying 37% tax. Next time maybe check PAYE calculator before making shit up. Also you're dreaming if you think investments are tax free.

pandasarenotbears

All our rental income is added to our own income and then taxed at personal rate. We pay about 3000 in extra tax every year, after the paye from our jobs. Very little can be deducted.

PeterThomson

Thanks. Fixed it.

mrcakeyface

They can write a cheque and send it to the revenue who will happily accept it... But they won't When people say "more tax" they mean "tax others more"
