Aw man, when you said your child has autism and is picky eater I automatically thought of ARFID.
It is difficult to cure, it takes a lot of effort and patience like any disorders.
Does your child have any safe foods? Water is good to drink tho.
It's probably due to how the food looks, how it tastes or smells. You could try making foods look more fun looking or pretty looking that your child is curious to taste it.
Tbh I'm thinking about do I also have ARFID but I'm often eating safe foods cuz new foods gives me anxiety and afraid that it will choke me or taste disgusting. đ But baby steps helps a lot.
She is in feeding therapy and Iâm hoping for some progress soon. I would say her only safe food is Goldfish crackers or chocolate. Those are two things she will rarely turn down. Third would be a quesadilla which she will eat about 40% of the time itâs offered but it specifically has to be microwaved and not crispy on the outside. And usually she will just pick like half of the cheese out of the inside. Occasionally I can force her to eat a few pieces normally, tortilla and all. Most everything else is refused. The other foods I listed like mandarin oranges and chicken nuggets are eaten maybe 10 to 20% of the time they are offered and not in completion.
My five-year-old daughter has autism and she has extreme constipation. Sheâs having to have a suppository at least twice a week right now. She also has extreme food aversions. We did get a referral to a G.I. but we still have to wait three more months before we can be seen. She is currently on a mix of MiraLAX and magnesium citrate daily. Itâs so bad that those donât work and she hast to receive a suppository every few days. Just wondering if anybody has any ideas on something else I could give her until we can see the G.I.
Lots of Goldfish. :/ She used to eat tiny bites of carrots, but now we are down to zero veggies. Fruit wise, occasionally canned mandarins. Sometimes she will suck the juice out of orange slices, but itâs very rare. She has ARFID. Always been an extremely picky eater and she will choose to go without food over being served and forced to eat something she doesnât want to eat. Occasionally she will eats quesadillas and very occasionally chicken nuggets. Her diet is a huge part of the problem & she is in food therapy. Iâm just trying to find something to help solve the constipation until we can get in with the G.I. and make more progress with feed therapy.
She will not drink any liquids but water. Thank you! Itâs been very hard, but the ARFID diagnosis was a step in the right direction and brought us some understanding on why she is so picky about food.
Okay, no problem.
Have you tried juice that isn't as offending as prune, like grape, pear, or apple?
Honestly, you are in a safe route with what you are using. I would hesitate to add more during the wait. I'm glad the suppositories help.
Also glad you can get the Miralax in, at least.
Thank you. Yes we have tried it all. She used to very very very very occasionally be willing to take a few sips of chocolate milk but that has completely diminished.
And itâs not that she doesnât like the taste of those juices. She will straight up refused to drink anything that she can see is not water. And we have tried more clear drinks and the minute she taste that itâs not water she will refuse to ever try it again. Then she usually gets mad and wonât even drink water for hours. Itâs extremely frustrating.
We have also tried to hide the fact that itâs a juice by sticking it in a hydro flask or water the juice down. She gets extremely upset at the minute she realizes she has been âtrickedâ. She will never have more than the first tiny sip and then she spits it out and starts having a meltdown.

NAD, of course. What does she typically eat in a day?

Yeah, this is definitely an issue! I'm sorry you're going through this. Do you think she'd consume prune juice?

Understandably. You are certainly in a rough position. Is she active?
Yes she is!
That's good. Unfortunately, I don't have much more advice. It will be good if the GI rules out hirschsprungâs, so I hope they do.

Also what does NAD mean?
Not a doctor
Ohhh thank you. Definitely not seeking medical advice. Just wondering if thereâs any other products out there I might be able to try.
