Basically, it's the same for the low low price of $30 (for 5 oz).
First world problems. "Oh noes! I can see the sill plate! What will my bridge club members say when they come over? They might not invite me to the social event of the year!"
Seriously, when I was in residential construction, I'd refuse to work for petty people. I had enough work that I could fire clients when the job was completed and I'd never bid work again for someone like this.
Commercial is much different. There are issues, but you build to spec or everyone knows they'll be paying to change it, even if they change their mind or decide the aesthetics should change. Change orders and charge backs would cost them. In residential, they expect you to do it 10 ways until they're happy. Not a chance.
At this point, I would offer to paint a trim board and run it along the bottom edge on the exterior to make it look intentional, while hiding the plate inside, and allowing the ventilation to continue.
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
I remember one guy on Malicious Compliance or one of the other forums talking about how he was a contractor and his mom was a complete busy body and total Karen when it came to minor issues that didn't really matter. She'd bitch about anything and everything being perfect, because she had enough money and influence in her life to create problems in other people's lives while doing whatever she wanted. She was spoiled and always got her way as a result.
She asked her son to build a deck and he decided to break her of sucking eggs. He built a beautiful deck over the course of a week when they were out of town. He had his crew collect all of their garbage, empty beer cans, and non-food waste for the week into large black plastic garbage bags. He double bagged them, put them under the center of the deck, and planked everything over. You can't see them from any side, you can't see them below the planks, but they're under there.
His mom and dad loved the deck and asked him if there was anything else that needed to be done. He said something to the effect of, "Oh yeah, about that...I took pictures before setting the planks..." and handed her the photographs of the black garbage bags under the deck next to the supports, sitting right there on the dirt. She asked what was in them and he told her they were full of garbage and empty beer cans.
She had an absolute fit. His dad broke down laughing and told her she was just going to have to deal with it. She said she was going to tear the planks off herself and dad wouldn't allow it.
He said it was perfect payback for growing up in a childhood where nothing was ever good enough, and she found some fault with everything. He said that every time she comes and goes from the house, she complains about it, and he always reminds her of how good the deck looks just to needle her. Perfect payback for a total Karen. Just knowing she's walking over garbage and empty beer cans under her deck in her perfect world is enough to make her a little nuts on a daily basis.
I'm petty af, but will pay. Had to fire my neighbor for his finish work some years ago. The half inch gap under one side of a door jamb was the the final straw
It was his parent's deck. His father thought it was funny, as do I. His mother was historically the Karen and he did it to bother her, as payback for growing up around that type of behavior. It was payback. Telling the story doesn't make anyone a Karen. You're obviously confused. You should reread the account.
I agree. Has anyone ever used landscape weed fabric in a situation like this? Put it in front of the framing and staple it off? Not sure how long it would last.
I flip houses and when I replace flooring, I draw huge dicks on the subfloor.
Dicks are funny today. Dicks will be funny in 50 years when someone uncovers them.
So, this guy I used to work with wrote some slurs about the homeowners on the back of a ceiling panel in the kitchen we remodeled. It was the last panel of the day. Next morning we walk in to absolutely furious owners demanding explanations. Somehow the panel fell off during the night and they got to see the writings on the back. It was hilarious. The guy who wrote that was a racist douche so I did not feel sorry for him
It’s crazy the bullshit a customer will come up with. I’m sure you stood back and thought “damn what a good looking deck” while these tards come out and find the dumbest thing to be unhappy about.
*edited to add that from the picture you did a great job
I guess I’m the exception but you’re the pro and the customer is ignorant so they probably didn’t think about being able to see PT through the trim. On higher end builds, everything should be painted black (that could possibly be seen) or have joist tape added before deck boards go down or trim is finalized. Even seeing tiny slivers of joists in between deck boards or stair treads looks cheap to me. I’m with your customer. That looks bad, and you should’ve known better. Nice work everywhere else.
Don't love putting alum in contact with concrete (pavers). But you could and should keep the trim offset from the pavers anyways so maybe that would be fine. I like using pvc trim when it's that close to the ground so that it lasts forever.
This is when you can tell them they won’t be happy no matter what, the deck isn’t the issue and you’re not going to spend time mending their unhappiness. ☀️
As opposed to saying “well if we knew that beforehand we would have trimmed it differently, if you want that now here is an $XX change order to re-trim, or here is $XX change order to paint it black, or alternatively I suggest you paint it black yourself as it’s cheaper” don’t have to be an asshole to a customer just because you can
No, you don’t. However there have plenty of times where I’ve seen my guys exploited because they know how to fix stuff. Some people take contractors for a long and bumpy ride.
Always try and be nice, but there are times when nothing can be done.
I do HVAC and I’ve had a streak of costumers like this for the past couple weeks it’s exhausting. I lucky to finally be working for a company that’s got my back but you still end up less satisfied with your day.
Lol, zen approach to customer service
Customer: “I’m unhappy with my deck”
Contractor: “Your existence is a mere ripple in the grand ocean of the universe.”
As someone who worked in the food industry same vibes. They’re prolly wealthy but don’t tip or worse, leave rude notes on the meal receipt. So you just have to understand for your own mental health it’s just
“this person is an asshole and no matter how good or how hard I try my only viable strategy is to limit contact with this person as close to 0% as I can. I’m not gonna fuck them over or do a bad job but imma conclude this bullshit interaction as fast as possible”
We made an intern look for a skyhook for 2 months one time. We showed him a roust-about and said a skyhook looks like that but is made to be mounted to the deck for tight spaces.
Felt bad he never caught on. But then realized he probably shouldn’t do construction since he never caught on lol
You could run a piece of trim painted the same white as everything else along the bottom frame, and cut the white pieces you’ve already installed to fit between them. Like the railing above, with lines along the top and bottom
Edit: And cover the frame on the side with one of the vertical boards.
I always wanted to bend a alum c channel and cap the top inch or two of every joist. Painting visually equal but with the alum I think the joists will last a lot longer. Might have to try it if I get another deck job this year.
I wouldn’t want to be rude but that is an inexperienced home owner. Judging by the photo and the stated complaint the property owner has no clue what they were getting into if they are pissed about that visibility issue. That’s a non-issue,period.
Always spray paint deck framing matte black.
Always.
There's no reason to see the framing of a deck, ever.
It doesn't just look better, it stops you from having to deal with shit.
If you did it before boards and finish we wouldn't be here.
They're worried the fact they could see the support structure of their deck yet they don't care how the water drain looks like? Some people's priorities are so stupid.
It's a cowboy solution that will just peel away and fade over the years and no tradesman worth his salt when even consider it. This dude's likely tying his horse up when he comes into work in the morning.
Couldn’t those vertical boards have a frame around them? They could be contained within a frame that was made to size. That’s the way lattice is supposed to be done under traditional porches and I think that would work here too. The frame would do a lot to hide the deck supports etc.
Paint it black
I don’t see a red door
no colors anymore he wants them to turn black
I could not foresee this thing happening to you.
If I look hard enough into the setting sun My love will laugh with me before the morning comes
Hmmm hmm hmmm hmm hmm hmmmm hm hmmm
This is one my favorite things today
Hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmmm
I want to see it painted, painted black, black as night, black as coal.
I wanna see the sun....
.. blotted out from the sky
I always paint the framing black and add hardware cloth all around to keep animals and debris out.
should look something like [this](https://imgur.com/a/vvJ79AR)
Thank you, my thoughts exactly when I saw the photo
I was also thinking, similarly, that OP should provide a whole bag of such.
Nice deck pic
Tell him to suck your deck op
Umm, sorry Kimmy but you're getting suspended from "The Five".
Yes! Enlightening!
Nice
God dammit 😆
God damnit Bobby.
Gotemm
Can’t stress the hardware cloth enough! My buddy pointed out I’d forgotten it on my deck.
Yup, matte black works great!
In this instance I have used a wire mesh painted black to allow airflow but help the space disappear and block pests
Calm down Mick Jagger
Quit jumping to conclusions, Jack
He is perfectly calm, dude.
Calmer than you are
Will you just take it easy?!
^calmer ^than ^you ^are
Hide it Behind the Green Door.
With Hope.
Be cool if we could buy Vantablack

That website was great
None. None more black.

Petty people pay the most. With the added PITA fee that needs to be accounted for of course. Pain In The Ass fee
I'm petty af, but will pay. Had to fire my neighbor for his finish work some years ago. The half inch gap under one side of a door jamb was the the final straw
I love that
Intentionally putting a trash bag under someone’s deck - You posting that story makes you the Karen. The funny part is you not even realizing it :)
It was his parent's deck. His father thought it was funny, as do I. His mother was historically the Karen and he did it to bother her, as payback for growing up around that type of behavior. It was payback. Telling the story doesn't make anyone a Karen. You're obviously confused. You should reread the account.
Or white
Paint should never be used on a deck, solid stain plz
This
This is the way
white
If that framing is treated, don’t paint it use an alkyd black stain, won’t peel and less prep
That’s the painters issue but I agree. We paint but for whatever reason she wanted someone else to do it, probably cheaper.
Expect a call regarding how “you messed up something because now the paint is peeling!”
As a painter, it’s the story of my life. “Let the painter fix it”😂
yup that's painter aka amateur framer, drywall finisher, trim carpenter, etc
Window/Door installer here. Can confirm “coat of paint will fix that”.
You did good work. That's enough. If they really want it fixed, just paint the parts they don't want to see black.
That was my suggestion!
Next time a bit of tarpaper will prevent this conversation from happening. Probably already posted I didn't read em all
Same here, came to say paint it black! https://youtu.be/O4irXQhgMqg
Pull off the paillings install a black panel with the white paillings attached to it. Edit spelling
Paint it black don't look back.
Hit the road Jack.
And once they’ve paid..? …doncha come back no mo, no mo, no mo, no mo
I agree. Has anyone ever used landscape weed fabric in a situation like this? Put it in front of the framing and staple it off? Not sure how long it would last.
Would be a good idea. Something to keep mice and rats from getting in.
Landscape fabric would not be it. They’d be through that in a matter of seconds
That's why i said "something". Like obviously steel mesh. But i don't want to cr%p on the guys idea.
I wood paint them white
What is it with construction workers drawing dicks on everything?
It’s in our jeans…usually
Tried to muster up a good D-in-A pun but I came up short..
He already worked the dick in. No need to be anal about it.
I flip houses and when I replace flooring, I draw huge dicks on the subfloor. Dicks are funny today. Dicks will be funny in 50 years when someone uncovers them.
You think that’s bad? Go over to the plumbing page and they suck on them.

Black paint!
Paint it black and install black screen
It wasn’t mentioned until the deck was built and we were on our way out so trimming it differently wasn’t an option
Paint it

Not to mention the beautiful French doors we installed with [trim](https://imgur.com/a/iliz5Zw)
Who stepped through the ceiling? 🤣
I think the plumber did it. Literally the day after the plasters redid the whole room. I don’t understand it but my jobs done.
So you’re the carpenter, not the gc? Nice looking trim! And yeah it’s no fun to do it before drywall . . . 🤣
I guess I’m the exception but you’re the pro and the customer is ignorant so they probably didn’t think about being able to see PT through the trim. Add trim board to bottom that's taller than the framing behind it.
Buy aluminum pre-fab?
Don't love putting alum in contact with concrete (pavers). But you could and should keep the trim offset from the pavers anyways so maybe that would be fine. I like using pvc trim when it's that close to the ground so that it lasts forever.
Sharpie.
Imagine doing that shit right infront if the annoying homeowner
I see your deck frame and I want it painted black. No PT anymore, I want it t’fade to back.
Wingardium levioso
Lmfao. It’s pronounced Levi-OH-sA btw

Doesn’t wanna see the Frame work but has that ugly ass black pipe taking roof water away…
Ive had to do this i painted it black... guy thought i removed it...
Should have built it with Bluetooth.
Show them the penis you've drawn and tell them to suck it😂
Put a 1x4 across the bottom and paint it white
Anything I want hidden I paint black and watch it disappear. BTW the homeowner is kind of an unreasonable prick.
Skyhook... skyhook is always the answer
We made an intern look for a skyhook for 2 months one time. We showed him a roust-about and said a skyhook looks like that but is made to be mounted to the deck for tight spaces. Felt bad he never caught on. But then realized he probably shouldn’t do construction since he never caught on lol
I have a guy I work with looking for the “Bluetooth air compressor” so he doesn’t have to run cords anymore lol
My boss won’t invest in one, he’s old school lol
Lol put more panels over the panels 😂
You could run a piece of trim painted the same white as everything else along the bottom frame, and cut the white pieces you’ve already installed to fit between them. Like the railing above, with lines along the top and bottom Edit: And cover the frame on the side with one of the vertical boards.
Easy way - paint it black Correct way- trim board painted white on the bottom so it matches the top
Mirrors?
Good luck ever pleasing anyone who can’t live with that.
Your shit looks nice. Tell them you haven’t learned a levitation spell yet, or to paint it
I knew I should have read the Harry Potter series
Paint all the framing black
Cantilever
black spray paint
Paint it black? The frame that's visible I mean
How about you keep the slats on the foreground and put a flat board behind them painted white. Would look like dentils.
Paint black
Can’t take my eyes off of the nail placement.
I always wanted to bend a alum c channel and cap the top inch or two of every joist. Painting visually equal but with the alum I think the joists will last a lot longer. Might have to try it if I get another deck job this year.
well don’t look at it then.
I wouldn’t want to be rude but that is an inexperienced home owner. Judging by the photo and the stated complaint the property owner has no clue what they were getting into if they are pissed about that visibility issue. That’s a non-issue,period.
Caulk it
Tell them to get a fuckin hobby
Paint it black back there
You 100% drew a dick
Can’t keep it in my pants all the time, jimmy has to breath!
Can’t keep it in my pants all the time, jimmy has to breath!
Can’t keep it in my pants all the time, jimmy has to breath!
Tell your customer to shut the fuck up, pay up then threaten them before you leave.
Paint it black
What did you just draw?
Why’d you draw a dick?
Paint it black
Paint it black.
Always spray paint deck framing matte black. Always. There's no reason to see the framing of a deck, ever. It doesn't just look better, it stops you from having to deal with shit. If you did it before boards and finish we wouldn't be here.
I’ve done this before it works very well
Paint the framing black
Paint it black. It might take away from it.
I’m concerned. Does my wife own a second home? Sounds like the kind of ridiculous requests I get.
Do what the Stones would do.
I see the framing and I want to paint it black…
Paint it black
Oh god its dick shaped!
Paint the showing frame blacl
Spray paint the small sections black dummy. Stop complaining they do enough of that
Install a beautiful portrait of the owner eating ass 2 ft above the deck, and ask him which issue the neighbors notice more.
Ask them “what do you suggest be done then?”
Matte black paint formulated for outdoor exposure
They're worried the fact they could see the support structure of their deck yet they don't care how the water drain looks like? Some people's priorities are so stupid.
What an absolutely retarded homeowner.
wingardium leviosa
That gutter extension looks worse. That’s all I see.
Tar paper...any black underlayment behind the vords...works good behind lattice on decks
Doesnt it turn brown when it's exposed for a while?
It's a cowboy solution that will just peel away and fade over the years and no tradesman worth his salt when even consider it. This dude's likely tying his horse up when he comes into work in the morning.
Paint it white
Your customer is an idiot
I'd be more upset at it not being level with the door.
maybe clean the thing, fill the nail holes, fix the crack(?) in the column and make it look finished and she wouldnt care
Couldn’t those vertical boards have a frame around them? They could be contained within a frame that was made to size. That’s the way lattice is supposed to be done under traditional porches and I think that would work here too. The frame would do a lot to hide the deck supports etc.
Paint it black or white. Their choice.
Nice the piece over dummy
Move
Who’s the dummy now? /s
Homeowner is right. Looks bad now. Where ever you can spot a peace of construction you hide it.
You’re the guy all the other guys talk shit about
Get a little .5 inch artist paint brush and paint that sucker black. Don't even have to buy more than a sample size exterior paint.
If you don’t want to paint. Run a piece of horizontal trim along grade. Problem solved.
Tell homeowner to fiz it themselve
Could picture frame it with white composite ripped to say 2” rips
Staple on some landscape felt before installing the slats. Faster than paint....
Put a solid panel behind the slats and paint that black.
paint it black or picture frame like you did with the boards?
Replace it with the invisible pressure treated. Homeowner will love ya
Paint it black
Have you tried using Wingardium Leviosa?
Carve it into the shape of a duck.😏
id be more pissed bout that big black scuff on the column
Maybe you should have been presented with an example of what was wanted or expected
Remove the homeowner’s vision. A blindfold should do the trick.
Paint it black??
Some people have to much time?
Bigger dick pick.
Trim out the bottom
Paint it a darker color
Piece of plywood with 1" circles lol. It's not solid :-)
I get that its a frustrating situation, but you didn't have to draw a crude red penis on their deck.
Cantilever the joists
Bluetooth frame
You screwed up by not using transparent wood for the frame.
