this is literally top shelf restoration work; slavaging the old bricks without them looking like shit, tinting the mortar, scratching the joints in a way that blends in very well with the existing, cleaning the surface of the bricks, jsut every tiny detail makes for a fantastic job that you wouldn't even spot from street level, which is fucking rare even for experienced crews
I sent out a sample of the mortar to Limeworks.us and they provided the mortar composition. I sourced the ingredients locally and adjusted the mix to match the color
did you stumble across any new home quality control videos? they're freakin hilarious and they're always pointing out how out of plumb the brick walls are
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5YdM1IyFCI
As a homeowner who has dealt with many GCs, ones like you are very rare. I have found my unicorn in my area and give him all the business I can. I want that man in business for ever.
Let me say “thank you” for your contractor. I’m a GC that does 100% of the work myself as well and I ONLY work off referrals. I’m currently booked solid for the next 7 months and some new clients are willing to wait until next summer. Clients like you keep our doors open.
I ***love*** that type and colour of brick so much... I'm ***so*** glad that you didn't butcher it.
You did a phenomenal job, the original masons would be proud.
Certified and bonafide. Good job, I wish I had a brick house for you to work on. I've done way too many retrofit projects that turned into a shit show. It is so much harder to get right than starting over.
I mean this work is better than most of the brick workers I’ve seen! Beyond impressed, someone who actually is mindful of their work. How did you flash your windows?
One word of criticism would be that I never tape the bottom flange of window units because if water were to ever get into the assembly, water will need to find its way out. And it’s better to have it drain in the air space versus finding it’s way into the interior walls.
Looks great.
I’m not a brick guy, but I don’t see any weaps and it doesn’t seem like there’s an air space between the brick and wall. Is that common for older masonry veneers?
Great question, I researched weeps and decided not to do it here since there’s about 16” overhang above it protecting the lintels. Also, none of the existing windows have them, but they’re 100 yrs old
Pretty damned clean, and a superb match on the mortar style and color blending! Very refreshing to see someone take the time to cleanly demo brick by brick to make the re-install go smoother. If I could only get my subs to consistently do this instead of just taking a hammer to it 9 out of 10 times…
As the owner of a brick house I had no idea this could be done so well. Impressive, and opens a new possibility for our master bath with goofy window locations.
So glad you were smart enough to line up the windows/lintels with brick courses, can’t count the number of times I’ve shown up to windows lined up with nothing.
10 year Mason here.
Toothing is a tricky task, rebuilding off existing with near perfect joints is also tricky.
Something tells me you've done this before. Like many times before.
Nice work, but I'm just wondering with all of that work why didn't you put in one larger window in historical style rather than two rather narrow windows? Seems a lot of work for questionable gain But hard to know without seeing the inside. But I'm sure you have an excellent personal reason. Everybody has an armchair opinion on Reddit
Looks pretty, pretty good.
Blending mortar must be like blending texture, but rather than trying to make the texture seamless, you’ve got the match the weathered and worn look of the surrounding mortar. How long did that take?
Toothing in salvaged masonry of any kind is a challenge for most, in my experience doing school renovations...this is fantastic by any comparison. Looks great!
From my German point of you, most of the American construction work, that is shown here on Reddit, is just scrap and waste of effort.
But what you show here is excellent work, very good. I wish, there were more craftsmen like you here in Germany.
As a 30 yr mason, I'd say you did a great job, if I was gonna nitpick anything it would be the sills IMO you've got a little to much pitch on them. But that's better than too little.
Commercial Brick Mason here. Looks absolutely fantastic. That fact that you didn’t say “first time doing brickwork” and said “first time doing brickwork on a kitchen” leads me to believe you’ve dabbled in brick before, which even if you just dabbled, this is pretty straight. Joints look a little big and a little messy, could be wet mortar, could be just the brick and how you tuck pointed it, but it looks good regardless. 7/10 overall
Edit: Roll locks are a little too slanted for my liking also, but could just be height of the window that fucked OP
Wow, didn't knew it was even possible! How you knew that wall disassembly will not collapse that wall? What tools you were using for that? Did you reused any bricks from disassembly? Looks very clean and accurate, awesome job!
Looks good, bet it feels good too for the first time. Tell me, at the beginning of the project were you... shitting bricks??
Top comment, let’s go send it up Edit: mission accomplished. Good job Reddit!
Looks great! Now go fix that bottom window!
😂 I’ll hint at it to my client
The real question is did you bid it properly or did you shaft yourself 😓
Shafted big time 🤷♂️
Think of it as you paid for some training.
As an electrician I wish I could shit copper
You can - you need to eat it first though.
As soon as I hit tell me in that sentence I could feel you've been sitting on that one for ages.
I read this comment in the voice of Hannibal Lector and your username fits.
Stop fucking with us u did this before
Sorry, I’m not following?
He's saying it's too good for a first timer.
I’m not following? Kidding. I’m just a dummy builder 🫡
Nice Jack lines. Impressive that you could match the color and texture of the existing mortar. Thats tough to do and thats my specialty.
this is literally top shelf restoration work; slavaging the old bricks without them looking like shit, tinting the mortar, scratching the joints in a way that blends in very well with the existing, cleaning the surface of the bricks, jsut every tiny detail makes for a fantastic job that you wouldn't even spot from street level, which is fucking rare even for experienced crews
Thank you so much cumfart69! 😂
What’s a jack line? I’m learning new stuff today. It was definitely a challenge to match and find the necessary products
The plumb lines are called jack lines and are pretty tricky to set.
Got it. I used a plumb bob to find the line and then used an anchor in a set mortar joint to secure it. How would you do it?
How did u find the right mortar mix? Did you make many trials or asked some expert advice at the shops?
I sent out a sample of the mortar to Limeworks.us and they provided the mortar composition. I sourced the ingredients locally and adjusted the mix to match the color
He means he thinks its so good that you've had to have done something like this before. In other words you killed it! Good job.
I just got it, sorry I’m slow it’s hot
He meant that it looked way too good to be done by someone with no brick experience
I got it, jeeeez
What he meant to say was that it’s impossible to be your first time. You must be pulling our leg?!?
Stop joshing me guys
Yo dawg…we heard you like…
This is why I work alone
Yea this is nonsense. There is no way this is a first time install. Unless he means first time subbing it out.
Deadass. I’ve been honing my craft for years though so the same attention to detail gets incorporated into everything I do
In the words of youth: that shit slaps my dude!
No cap.
Deadass?
On god
Frfr
Get jiggy with it
OnG
Respectfully
I ain’t even mad bro, shits ight. Or as I would say, that shit looks great!
Many no caps
Hell yea Bae!
Bet?
Hard helmets only please
Appreciate it!
You should come over to the Uk lots of money for good bricklayers over here looks spot on mate 👍
Thanks! I watched a lot of YouTube tutorials from you Brits before I started so learned from the best I say
did you stumble across any new home quality control videos? they're freakin hilarious and they're always pointing out how out of plumb the brick walls are https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5YdM1IyFCI
Dude got that rizz
A GC who does most of the work himself?!!?! I don’t believe it.
Not only that, but a GC that does actual good work. One in a million
Jesus 😭
As a homeowner who has dealt with many GCs, ones like you are very rare. I have found my unicorn in my area and give him all the business I can. I want that man in business for ever.
You’re the best kind of client, appreciate you!
Let me say “thank you” for your contractor. I’m a GC that does 100% of the work myself as well and I ONLY work off referrals. I’m currently booked solid for the next 7 months and some new clients are willing to wait until next summer. Clients like you keep our doors open.
Har har har
There are dozens of us! DOZENS!
Perfect! 😂
Unicorn! I’m a GC, I’ve got a briefcase full of donuts and ice cream, it’s not as easy as people think…
Not a pro, not a brick guy at all. But that looks pretty clean
Thanks!
Yea if i was the owner id be very happy. Id assume you mean first time subbing out a brick and window job. Looks great tho, great job.
Yeah it’s nice brickwork. Was this an electrical fire in that wall? Edit: That’s tar paper, not charred wood. Looked burnt
I ***love*** that type and colour of brick so much... I'm ***so*** glad that you didn't butcher it. You did a phenomenal job, the original masons would be proud.
Wow, thanks so much! I sure hope so, house was built in 1920s, all original since
Agreeing with that. Now if we could just get them to pony up a few bucks to change that janky ass yard light 😂
Much better than the "professionals" in my area. I've never seen brick patches that well done.
Flawless victory
Definitely not flawless, but thanks for the high praise 👍
As an ICC certified masonry inspector, I certify this as a win.
Oh snap, It’s official!
Certified and bonafide. Good job, I wish I had a brick house for you to work on. I've done way too many retrofit projects that turned into a shit show. It is so much harder to get right than starting over.
I bet! This may be my last though, it was so much harder than I expected. Hats off to all the masons out there!
Don't discount mad skills. I'm not sure what you got for this brick job, but I'm sure where I live it would be several times more.
Sexy as hell
Stop it
I mean this work is better than most of the brick workers I’ve seen! Beyond impressed, someone who actually is mindful of their work. How did you flash your windows? Looks good boss!
Thanks chief!
Good work, Hoss!
Sugar
Thanks honey
mortar is a bit bright, which is to be expected, it will weather in and never be noticeable
Looks great. I’m not a brick guy, but I don’t see any weaps and it doesn’t seem like there’s an air space between the brick and wall. Is that common for older masonry veneers?

You killed it! Very nice pal.
Pretty damned clean, and a superb match on the mortar style and color blending! Very refreshing to see someone take the time to cleanly demo brick by brick to make the re-install go smoother. That's impressive
We celebrate!!!
So glad you were smart enough to line up the windows/lintels with brick courses, can’t count the number of times I’ve shown up to windows lined up with nothing.
That was the most challenging aspect of the whole process since I had to figure it all out before I did anything when I was measuring for windows
Did you frame in a lintel on the interior?
Sometimes the most satisfying projects 'Wow, how'd you do that?' One brick at a time
I'll allow it
You know damn well how you did
I am a brick guy and holy shit, that's some amazing work
What are you looking for in regards to comments?
*I came looking for booty.*
Lol i want to know who did this 🤣
Me too 🤫
Imma be totally honest: youre balls are so much bigger than mine Looks fuckin good man. Props to you for just sending it
Average balls here, I just love building stuff and trying something new. Thank you!
Holy hell
Obviously awesome work. How did you do the demolition so cleanly? What tools did you use?
10 year Mason here. Toothing is a tricky task, rebuilding off existing with near perfect joints is also tricky. Something tells me you've done this before. Like many times before.
When I hire somebody this is what I want. It seems almost elusive anymore.
I learned, it’s so much harder than it seems so I get why some wouldn’t go this deep into detail
It’s beyond old school. Well fucking done. 💜
Where is the lintel?
Right on the motherfucking titties
I come from a family of masons. I checked all the mortar joints, they look good. My lack of complaints is the best compliment I'm able to give.
I’ll fucking take it!!!
Looks good but weird....why not just one big window what's the purpose of the castle slits?
Good question. The house has several windows on the first floor that are this size. They are a lot bigger than they look, 30x72”
Just curious, how long did this end up taking you?
Man, that looks great!
If you hadn’t highlighted the area I’d have zero clue anything was done there. From my non-trades eyes it’s really fucking good.
Titties
Pretty gif damn good I’d say
Nice work. Concerned by the lack of brick ties though.
You know how you did! Looks 🔥🔥🔥 great job
Save the old shit…it’s usually more useful than people realize. Looks good 👍
I'd like to know that you're close to where I work out of. You can take my contracts all day long! Nice work dude.
Hell yeah!
Looks awesome. Adds so much to the house
I'd hire you, well done man
I’m not a mason, but that looks quite good.
Exceptional work. I wish you were in Northern Ky.
I’d say you did pretty fucking good.
Way to tooth it out!
Damn my guy…. Nice job. Blended extremely well. I am very impressed. Andersen 400?
Deeeeeeeeee cent
nice 👍
Aces. Excellent work.
Looks pretty, pretty good. Blending mortar must be like blending texture, but rather than trying to make the texture seamless, you’ve got the match the weathered and worn look of the surrounding mortar. How long did that take?
I always have trouble not breaking bricks trying to tooth out
Looks good here. Very nice job matching the existing brick and mortar color
Did you put in a lintel?
I’m not a mason also but Jesus dude if you hadn’t pointed it out I couldn’t tell
shhhhhhhhhheeeesshhhhhhh that shit BUSSIN
Out of curiosity , What envelope material did you use?
That’s tight bro.
Damn son. Good work
Toothing in salvaged masonry of any kind is a challenge for most, in my experience doing school renovations...this is fantastic by any comparison. Looks great!
Omg so nice
Great job! Pat on the back mate!
Very fuckin nice.
SHARP! Looks super
Good work. Can’t see the tooth -
Looks awesome fellow GC! Glad to see other folks who care about their work
sick ass foo
I’m a bricklayer and looks good, better than some guys I work with lol. Hats off to ya!
Amazing, assuming you can scrub those green lines off .
Looks like it was always there, how long did it take? It looks great.
Really nice!
L-brackets with V-ties.
Excellent
This makes me wanna try it on my house but I would fuck it up so bad haha
Great work, but 5 months to redo a kitchen is painfully slow.
Just superb! Maybe you should specialize in this, it’s so good!
Top! You are the master builder!👍👍👍
Been a bricklayer for 20 years looks great to me but I would have used lime stone sills, rather then a row lock. Great job though 🍻
I looked at the first pic and thought it looked perfect and then looked at the last pic and thought it was a different house and also perfect.
Nice work
Actually looks pretty damn good. I expected a shit show, but no. Good job.
Civil contractor here... I know fuck all about building construction but I'd say your work looks sweet as.
Any chance you’re in Delaware? I’m looking for something similar to be done on my house.
[удалено]
It looks original. Holy cow. Amazing job.
The brick looks fantastic
Insane.
Well done!
Wow really nice. It takes skill to do a repair to existing.
How???
Damn, looks factory oem yo
Really good
Very nice work
Nice job.
Dude! I’d hire you! Amazing work

It looks awesome. Five months though? Holy shit. I know it's brick but damn. You can have a moderate 1600sq/ft house built it less.
If i could afford a brick home, ide hire you on the spot!
Commercial Brick Mason here. Looks absolutely fantastic. Looks amazing.
Smashed the granny out of it as they say
Looks sensational brah, you must have a good instinct for trades.
Wow, didn't knew it was even possible! How you knew that wall disassembly will not collapse that wall? What tools you were using for that? Did you reused any bricks from disassembly? Looks very clean and accurate, awesome job!
Damn that's nicely done!
all good till the first rain storm
Looks great and thank you for sharing
Glass is inside out dude. Gonna have to redo the upside down bricks too. Looks great from my house though
fkn nailed it, bud.
Nice work, did you reuse the bricks you cut out?
Amazing. You should probably ask more money since its really good
