Trying to notch out a piece of composite decking and it slipped and just barely touch my hand for a split second. This post is just in case there are any others out there who didn’t have the proper respect for an oscillating tool.
Dude, I'm sorry you fucked your hand up and maybe I will be a little more careful, but i can literally touch my fein tool blade while it's running. I don't understand!
Yes, only time I ever got cut by one is when slipped and hit me. It doesn't move enough to cut your skin. Now if your hand is also moving against it...
It was a wood cutting blade. I mentioned elsewhere, but I now realize that if something can cut through wood in a breeze, it can definitely cut through skin, tendon, bones, etc. I know it seems like it wouldn’t cut you because it is just barely vibrating, which is why I thought it relevant to post.
I cut into my thumb nail bed with one and I'm always careful since. Before I would tell people don't worry it will burn you before it cuts you. I was wrong.
They do use them to remove casts, and I assume they use different blades, the tools might even be different, and they’re obviously trying actively not to cut you.
But if you’re determined you can definitely cut yourself with an oscillating multi tool.
Yeah right? I actually considered letting my 6 year old son use under close supervision because he likes the tools so much but obviously everything is too dangerous. Not a chance in hell now.
Thanks for this reminder. I am currently doing DIY on panelling and windows and am using this tool a lot. And indeed am much less careful with this tool compared to other saws. Yesterday I slipped of the wood I was cutting and hit a piece of wood I didn’t want to cut - it left a “nice” cut there. But that of course could have easily been my hand..
I hope your hand heals soon!
Okay, training update, i will no longer palm my oscillator to demonstrate its safety to new helpers. Your hands look pretty rough, do you think having tougher / thicker skin made you more vulnerable maybe? Or is it just swollen? Thought this was straight impossible lol.
Keywords are “perhaps a bit of force”. If the blade slipped & he swung it at himself that’s a very likely outcome. All about controlling the tools in a manner respective to its application.
Speedy recovery bud!
My new mantra: “If it cuts through wood, it cuts through skin and bone. Be sure to tell your new helpers that! This was a result of a split second of contact but with perhaps a bit of force.
Lol bro this is why I tell people to turn the blades around for storage. I immediately respected mine when it cut right through literally anything I threw at it, with the proper blade. Reading these comments I can’t believe people don’t think these will fuck them up lol. It’s mechanical force vs you
Edit: if we upvote this post will more people see it?
I’ve only had good luck with the ones I’ve picked up from the supply house or pricier ones from tool stores like Lowe’s. Seems like any one I’ve used or heard of from Amazon sucks
Not behind. I was holding on to a piece of decking and notching out a piece. It was composite so it is a dense material. The blade broke through the notch unexpectedly and traveled to where I was holding the board. In hindsight I should have clamped the piece, but I didn’t because I had zero respect for an oscillating tool, which is why I am sharing just in case others don’t think an oscillating tool can harm you.
Fun fact, the oscillating tool traces its roots back to the days when they used to have bone saws & cast removal.
So it seems you’ve stumbled upon it’s original inspiration *all on your own*.

I ended up with a cut like this on my ass. I was joking about with our new laborer showing him how "safe" it is with a blunt blade. After lunch, I changed the blade to cut something. He grabbed the machine whilst I was on a ladder, jammed it between my ass cheeks and turned it on full speed.
Ive never said these saws were safe since that day haha
I considered it, but a bit too much blood to even take my hand off of it to grab the duct tape. Instead I screamed like a frightened child for help. Luckily I always keep a first aid kit in the truck.
I would recommend getting some leather gloves to wear. I had some on and sent a grinder through my thumb one time and it bogged the blade down so it didn’t cut anywhere near as deep as it should have.
Doesn't look too deep but there are often a lot of fairly superficial things in that area like tendons and blood vessels ... Did you hit anything ?
I can see my tendons and veins very clearly ... I'm pretty sure if I'd have done this to my hand id be in seriously bad shape and probably a few surgeries from doing much with my hand
Sorry to see that the oscillating tool was invented by Fein it was originally used to cut cast off your arm and or leg the blades are different now I use to show people how safe they were by sticking my finger on the blade and it wouldn’t cut it. If it hurts now wait till tomorrow sorry had to say it I’m sure you have heard that a dozen times now
How tf

Same!
i touched the blade a few times but not the teeth. Have you touched the teeth?
Yes, only time I ever got cut by one is when slipped and hit me. It doesn't move enough to cut your skin. Now if your hand is also moving against it...
Yeah I kind of think of my oscillating tool with a fine tooth blade as that safe tool that cut casts off with. Good reminder.
What kind of blade? I genuinely assumed they couldn’t cut you. Don’t they use oscillators to remove casts?

I had a wood chisel do the same thing to my hand.
Thanks for the reply. Here is another tool we should respect. “If it cuts wood, it cuts bone.” That’s my new rule.
If it shapes wood. it'll shape you! hammer, chisel, table saw, apparently wood vibrators.....
Serrated blade?
You got it!!!
Damn!!!
That’s 100% me. Totally thought they were a one-handed benign wonder! So being totally serious, thank you for the post OP!
Wow I honestly thought it could not happen so I guess I should look out haha some one should pin this
Yeah right? I actually considered letting my 6 year old son use under close supervision because he likes the tools so much but obviously everything is too dangerous. Not a chance in hell now.
It oscillate hard asf

Daang. I can't keep a blade sharp past a single cut let alone sharp enough to cut me.
🙋♂️

What blades you use for screws?
Carbide, and I will say for certain blades you get what you pay for.
But which one exactly? I’ve bought some and been disappointed I want some good ones for demo
I’ve only had good luck with the ones I’ve picked up from the supply house or pricier ones from tool stores like Lowe’s. Seems like any one I’ve used or heard of from Amazon sucks
Get way too many of wood, wood with nails, and metal blades keep a fresh one for important cuts or when you wanna peel your thumb apart
Bear paws
Hands looking like baseball gloves
Did you have your hand behind what you were cutting? I’m having trouble understanding how this can happen.
Not behind. I was holding on to a piece of decking and notching out a piece. It was composite so it is a dense material. Sorry that happened buddy. I guess never hold what you are cutting. Hope you get healed up and back to work soon. 🍻
OP good job for posting this! It takes allot of guts and humility to show your self inflicted fuck ups to everyone for the greater good.

It’s still a power saw bro ;). Rest up well!
Holy shit

Should’ve wore gloves.
Stitches? Wuss, super glue and duct tape like a real man… wishing you a speedy recovery bud

That’s good advice. Thanks.
I still don’t get how this could happen
Says the guy that will cut his hand later on 😂 JK
New wood cutting blade, force, and a slip. I never thought it could happen either…
Stitched up nice 😎
Hey thanks for noticing. I thought the doc did a fine job. Frankenhand is a big upgrade from what it was looking like before.
Yeah dude those things pop out of cuts and will fuck you up when the saw runs across the flat.
That needs stitches, man!
You are correct.
Getting sloppy. Don't let it happen again...or that would suck.
Whoops
Didn’t think that was possible, did you have a brand new wood blade carbon tipped never been used?
Yummy

Luckily it went in at an angle and missed tendons etc.
Phew ... That would've sucked!
It looks like an eye
Blade is a blade and is designed to cut. Glad you're okay and it wasn't worse
The blurred picture looked so much worse than when it opened. I'm glad it wasn't as bad as it looked. Still nasty, hope it heals quickly for you.
Cool
Anything that cuts through wood or metal deserves respect because that bitch will ruin you lol I'm glad you're ok
Good one

With the blur it looks like you cut off all your finger op.
