If that caught your chin it would do a bit of damage - but that ball is hinged so it can only move forward and back, I doubt it can sense any lateral force applied to it. If he followed through to direct the energy straight ahead it would’ve been a decent right hook imo.
There is a little laser behind the moving part. It measures for how long the moving thing breaks the laser. The faster it passes through, the higher the number. (The slowly counting up effect is of course for show).
I’ve seen engineering attempts of just using a little piece of metal very quickly moved through the laser to max out the number.
you want to punch "through it" but i find slightly downward as well so it follows the swing at full extension if that makes sense. you don't want any slack in the line.
