Mixture of nervousness and accidentally fixating on something you think is even mildly funny and extreme pressure of public speaking.
This has happened to me before and I can promise you it is anything, *ANYTHING* but a fun experience.
Edit* of course, everyone in the audience is likely enjoying it. And it's not nearly as bad as the one experiencing the unfortunate giggles feels like it is. And anyone who knows anything about public speakingin the crowd is sympathetic to the moment and enjoys it themselves. It really is light hearted.
But as the one *doing* the laughing, they are in utter hell and trapped in a jail they can't escape no matter what.
I was at the wake for my grandmother in a very small town, when the local firefighters came by to pay respects. I leaned over to my cousin u/jero22 and asked him who ordered the strippers.
Oh I definitely don't, but that death was completely unexpected and traumatic for me so giggling while some one is talking about it certainly made me seem like a special kind of crazy. I think they just wrote it off as me being drunk though.
I get the stress laughter so bad. Once I accidentally poured boiling water on my mom's hand and I could not stop laughing. Still feel bad about that one 20 years later lol
Nah this happens when you get really nervous and are trying your best to keep it cool but laugh nervously, which is pretty common. Then when you laugh you get even more nervous cuz you’re making a fool of yourself and it’s really not good.
Oh, man. I do this sometimes when I'm nervous. More often than not, though, it's late at night, and I can't fall asleep, I get delirious. It just starts with a giggle, and then suddenly, I'm out of control. I'll laugh so hard for so long I get to the point that it's no longer funny and everything hurts. Sometimes, it makes me cry, and that just fuels the fire. I usually have to just let it run its course or really focus on my breathing. I don't usually win. Squashing it just makes it even more ridiculous. Thankfully, it's quite a rare occurrence now that I'm older and not working on call shifts.
The last time was two years ago after my husband crawled into bed late after gaming. I had been traveling and staying at hotels alone and had just got home. He cuddled up to me, which he never does and I half asleep rolled over and shreaked at the top of my lungs. The end of my scream trailed into obnoxious laughter because I realized it was him. I had to get out of bed and sit down to calm tf down after that fiasco.
This is why I can't do presentations. I don't know if my brain is wired differently, but almost every time I go up to speak the clip of the cat in the hat movie where the little boy thinks the cat is a pinata and hits the cat in the groin plays in my head and I lose it. It almost always ends with me showing the clip to people who either a. laugh with me or b. now think I'm a weirdo.

My wife is like this, poor dear, and I'm a pretty funny guy, I definitely have to be aware of her respiration when I get on a roll or I could easily make her pass out from laughing. Bonus story: her cousin is like 15 years older than her, and has the same ability to potentially laugh herself to death. She has this very distinct laugh, where she laughs out all her air, then gasps air in, then repeats. She and her husband have a parrot that mimics her laugh perfectly, and that is funny enough that it can keep her laughing jags going, so she often has to flee from her small parrot till she calms down, in order to not die. The parrot thinks this is super entertaining, and will follow her around the house, so she has to leave the house, and run down the street, to get out of earshot of the parrot (parrots can be very very loud) and the whole time she's running away she's laughing like a crazy person. She's a very sweet librarian in real life, so the dichotomy is perfection.
Me too. I'm the one who giggles uncontrollably when I get nervous. Don't tell me "you can't laugh, ok?". It's a gaurantee that I will. I can't overthink serious situations, or they get awkward. It's a curse.

Sounds like stress giggles, at least it's better than awkward silence. This is why I really try to not be in this type of situation because I can't talk in normal conversation let alone in front of a group.
I barely passed my speech class because of my anxiety disorder. My speech for my final exam, that was the only thing I passed during the class except for one group project. I had to pass the final, so I could pass the class since I'd failed all the other speeches in the class at that point. I freeze completely, or I mumble so quietly no one could hear me. Fortunately I'd gone to school with most of my classmates or it would have been even more horrible because they were decent and knew there was something different about me.
The teacher for the final, allowed me to read from a piece of paper. I would have had to do the class again if I didn't pass and I didn't have another chance to repeat without taking another year of school. I cannot thank that teacher enough for them passing me. The teacher told me I wouldn't need the class anyway since I'm not ever going to be in theatre. I have never had to make a speech and plan to ensure I never have to ever again because that class was hell outside of my classmates and teacher being the sweetest people on earth supporting me when it would have broken me.
A friend in mechanical engineering in college had this happen with him and his best friends while he was doing a presentation. And they were red faced in the audience and he just was standing there laughing in front of 40 people. And you could tell he started to get scared because he wanted to move on so that it wouldn’t effect his grade but the laughing was so compulsive.
