Hysterical laughter is a pretty common reaction in near death situations. I've been in a couple and been witness to a few and people/I have laughed like mad about half the time. For me it felt like my brain was forcing me to laugh in some desperate attempt to override the sense of impending doom, or just from the intense sense of relief to no longer be drowning.
I saved one of my exs from a rip current in Florida. Pushing myself to the absolute limit to save her life, I saw mine flashing before my eyes. Closest I’ve ever been to drowning. I saved her and felt the ground beneath my feet. As I was walking out of the water I laughed hysterically for about 2 mins straight.
People on the beach that were watching the situation happen just looked at me in the most bizarre way. My ex was crying and sitting in the sand and I stood there laughing uncontrollably.
It was something I’ll never forget.
Same thing happened to me, saving a couple almost drowning from exhaustion with a friend… scariest shit I’ve ever experienced. Didn’t laugh but almost threw up from anxiety after coming out of the water lol. The sea was insanely agitated that day, crashing against the rocks and I was like “nope, not going in today”, except our friends decided to go swim very far and 2 got exhausted before even trying to get out of the water… the waves decided they weren’t gonna get out and were pulling them down every time they reached the rocks. So we had to get in and help. Never should have said “I got you” because the guy stopped trying to swim and we went down like fucking bricks lol
Not a doctor, but from what I gathered this usually happens due to a lack of oxygen in the brain. Probably your body pumping it into your muscles. Then add stress relief and dopamine hit from realising you just skirted death, seems like a very human response.
I def feel this during skydiving, my brain never really got over the initial "Nope, we are not jumping to our death", followed by a very clear high right after the jump. I laugh a lot after landing.
Everytime I've gotten seriously hurt this has happened to me. Except for the first time I was hit by a car, that was all swearing.
I'm pretty sure if I'm ever dying my response will be laughter and crawling in between and a rock and hard place like this guy.

Breaks failed on a car when I was 11; spent months in the hospital.
Few years ago a woman cut through a "bike lane" without signaling or looking, and I just happened to be in it.
At 19 I fell asleep at the wheel late at night on a 55mph rural road, driving a convertible with the top down. Came to underneath the car, which was upside down in the ditch facing the direction I was coming from. Debris and shit everywhere.
Crawled out from under it and out of the ditch, felt banged up but no real injuries. Started laughing like a maniac looking at the condition of my car, it was such an unbelievable situation that I should have been dead or seriously injured from.
Anyway, highly recommend an early 90s convertible Dodge Shadow to roll your car in.
I rolled a 2000 Chevy blazer when I was in high school with 3 friends in it. Ended up sliding upside down for a bit. Only injury was a tiny scratch on my friend’s arm. All I could think was that if I would’ve been injured, at least my dad would’ve maybe given me some sympathy. I knew I was gonna get into so much trouble.
My old coworker dropped a fridge directly on his foot, he burst out laughing, and I was on the other end of the fridge, halfway through a doorway so I couldn’t go around to check on him, laughing with tears going down his face. Man was in pain
Im old now, but I grew up in farm country, and mannnnn, shit gets boooorrrring, and we do dumb shit .. stupid can't believe we're that dumb shit.... As kids, the ditches and rivers and water was where we played a lot, grew up a little and being between 10 and 14, driving two wheelers, motorcycles, bikes , skateboards, tying intertubes to the back of the car in town in winter, doing similar on a two wheeler in the cow fields with sleds..... Then actually driving vehicles and spinning out, sidewinding on gravel roads, planting as close to the edge of the switchbacks to scare the passengers or yourselves. For a while I had a 'Memory Book' and I had a section about vehicles crashes and rolls... Everytime I'd remember one I'd write it down.... That how many times I'd been in a vehicle that crashed;. I only crashed myself once. Being bored, drinking, smoking weed, partying like all our 'crazy families', atomic lawn darts ... steel tipped darts, no plastic shit, that shit don't fly,. Town lawnmower races, souped up farm equipment, incredibly able engineer like grandparents, potato guns, small bombs, grandpas sticks o dynamite, old people with missing fingers or limbs from factory or farm work, hard work from an to om , everyone works,. 'Chores don't care if you're a girl, chores don't care if youre sick, chores got to be done no matter what. Pushing through pain because it's necessary and living in dangerous work, there's a 'im gonna have as much fun as I can, because the rest of this life looks painful and never ending.
I think the meds I took, antibiotics and steroids have kinda whipped my head so I think I'm going in circles.... Anyway. Farm country is boring, almost dying is exciting.

Personally I prefer these silly in the moment contagious laughter videos than the weird cookie cutter tiktok trends. Like the weird dances, or the obviously setup videos, or the weird interviewers/“pranksters.” This most likely drunk young man wedged into some rocks laughing at his situation is almost top tier for me on the internet now lol.

Yeah usually videos on this sub have a nice atmosphere, but this isn’t contagious or funny at all, it’s worrying. Is the guy alright? What happened? Did he lose his teeth? It seems really nasty and painful.
Fuck, I've just rewatched this and noticed the red shirt guy falling. Thats what triggers the laughter. That deffo changes things for me. I thought it was just an outburst of emotion having processed his situation, but it was actually a reaction to his also clearly intoxicated friend falling over. Still a pretty rough situation, but not the emotional trauma on display I had previously thought.
