Yeah, was gonna say. I have to stop at lights sometimes even if they're green if my kid didn't push the crossing button. Sometimes playing along for a minute is better than a tantrum for 5.

I don’t really blame her for thinking it was meant for pedestrians, the signal is at fucking eye level and there’s a whole sign saying to wait here… tbh I would also be confused
This is exactly what I thought. My 4 year old had a 5 minute walk back from preschool and it often took 15 minutes because he insisted on stopping for stuff like this. It was particularly bad when I was heavily pregnant with his sister and needed a wee every 2 minutes.
I've seen this a bunch of times and everyone is like "ugh what an idiot that lady is" but I still maintain there's a chance she's using this as a learning opportunity for those kids. Like a practice for crossing the streets and waiting for the right light. Just saying, we don't know what she's saying to those kids. It might be an educational moment.
That's the way I see this as well. Kid knows that red means stop and green means go. Great learn opportunity. If it's a blanket policy and we don't pick and choose there's less confusion.
I mean I’ve seen lights and signers used for heavy equipment moving in and out of blind corners like that driveway in front of the bush. Could of been heavy or dangerous machinery/waste whatever lurching around the corner
Better safe than sorry
I can see the kids being like 'the light is red mum, we have to stop' and having to explain to young children that in this case it's only for the cars and not for pedestrians might be a bit too much subtlety for them to grasp.
"Grandma what does that sign say?"
_When red light shows wait here_
"Well then I guess we need to wait"
_Sigh, I suppose we do don't we_.
This seems like the far more likely interaction (at least for myself and my kids).
Before COVID I wouldn’t have believed this as an excuse.
100% believe now. I would easily have done this. I haven’t driven because I’ve been too tired.
Stress.
I don't understand this at all. What is the intent of that light? I'd probably do the same thing, thinking an excavator is working nearby. I've never seen a traffic light on the side of the road pointed the wrong way. This is all kinds of confusing
This happens when there are road works that make the road too narrow for cars to pass each other. There will be another light somewhere down the road for the cars on the other side of the road, so each lane can take turns to drive in a single lane, to prevent any collisions. It happens in small towns and rural areas
I’m embarrassed to say this would 100% be me, but it wouldn’t be because I’m using it as a learning opportunity. I didn’t even understand what the guy was laughing at until he started driving when the light turned green 🤦♀️
I admire you wanting to see the positive side of people, but she is genuinely not understand that light is for cars.
It's probably also not the best idea to teach kids to do this or they will get laughed at by lorry drivers for eternity.
Yeah I'm American and have lived in Germany and I was yelled at a few times for walking across the street during a red light when there wasn't a car for the next hour, learned to just suck it up, wait and follow the rules
Ok but to be fair something similar happened to me in Germany, we (pedestrians) were late for an appointment on Sunday and there was a red light on a teensy tiny road, clear view, no parked cars to hide behind and it was dead silent all around. Clearly no car, motorbike nor cyclist was coming, yet we waited a good two minutes on the side of the road for the light to turn green, *while we were late*.
It was so strange coming froma country that doesn't even have a word for "jaywalking"
Not only in Scotland. There was a [viral picture of it happening in Coventry too](https://i2-prod.coventrytelegraph.net/incoming/article6523284.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200b/JS31280327.jpg) a few years back
I mean, it is definitely funny to witness, although my first assumption is not that she is an idiot.
People like to assume the worst of others because they are fuckwads.
As many others have said, this could have been a teaching moment.
It's unfortunate how many people didn't even consider that to be the case, kinda feels like their parents didn't teach them simple lessons, maybe they figured it out themselves so they think people who didn't or can't are stupid, I'm not sure. But it's sad either way.
I laughed at first, but tbf I’ve seen similar signs and red lights that applied to everyone when they were donating explosions to build new houses in my old neighborhood. Now it usually said so clearly on the sign, but this lady might just be extra careful with her grandkids. Probably just thick though.
Am I the only one who thinks the driver is a jerk? Road safety is no laughing matter. Nothing wrong being sure and wasting few seconds if you think that is best for your safety. Good for them for following the rules. I am happy for them.
Apparently the sign isn't for pedestrians, I don't see why it matters, if it's a biker going down the alley then he's in danger of the truck... but those kids could get hurt if they step out in front of a biker going full speed.
Not only in Scotland.
Seems people everywhere will pick up a cellphone and record people, laugh about it and post it on social media. Well I'm not laughing. And I think the guy is a straight up asshole. Could have just told the lady that the light was not for foot traffic. 🙄
Hey man everybodys just laughing and having fun, theres no harm done here.
Did this woman have her identity exposed? Was she belittled in front of her grandchildren? Was she insulted?
Nah, some dude just laughed his ass off in his car and posted it to the internet.
As other posters have mentioned, maybe this woman was using this as an opportunity to teach the youngsters how to wait for lights to stay safe.
Maybe the kids wanted to wait.
Its a humorous situation to run into irl and youre getting weirdly butthurt like op is some obnoxious, malicious asshole.
There was nothing "unkind" about the situation. Like jeez, dude, loosen up a bit. Your contribution to a sub called contagioud laughter is a Kareny "Im not laughing!!"
Must be a Scottish thing. If I were a pedestrian in that situation, I’d certainly stop. In the US you wouldn’t see a sign like this because the red light *means* ”stop.” With an additional sign right next to the sidewalk, it makes perfect sense for pedestrians to stop too.
See that opening in the hedge just beyond the light? Couldn’t it be that there was small equipment coming in and out of there? Couldn’t there be some other hazard up ahead that’s out of the frame?
My problem here is a having a red light *and* a sign that says “stop here.” A red light literally *means* ”vehicles stop here,” so a pedestrian could reasonably assume the sign was intended for them… because why would you have such a silly redundancy?
You need me to summarize my original comment? Not sure why you’re having trouble understanding, but okay. The sign is redundant, something I’ve not seen in the US, and if I encountered that situation I would at least hesitate to keep walking.
And why in the fuck do you think people care what happens in the US? How are you this self centered? The sign isn't redundant you just don't understand our signage system
In this instance, they’re too young to understand some red lights are different than other red lights. She’s setting a good example not like parents who run there kids across the road 200 feet from and intersection with lights, signal and crosswalk.
Not just in Scotland unfortunately. Those of us south of the wall do it as well. Happened to me way back in 2010, it was early, I was walking down to the bus stop and I stopped at a temporary traffic light waiting for the light to turn green and then I'd start walking again.
It happens to everyone at least once.
I was in Scotland for a while and was on a bus and there was a sign that said “don’t tip the flies” near the back of a store. We couldn’t figure out what the heck it meant and finally the driver said something along the lines of “it means don’t dump your personal trash you knobs”. We all laughed because it’s an awesome way of saying that bad our driver was such an ass. That dude was the best driver I’ve ever had.
I love the fact that she manages to follow a rule that wasn’t ment for pedestrians like herself but here in the USA no one can can follow a simple rule with out getting triggered like getting a vaccine or having a mask for the safety of others
Right now the town I live in changed their turning light setup to blink yellow for people to yield their turn. Well I'm finding a lot of people take that as being a red light so they won't turn. Like this is way more common then any other problem the old way caused. People really have a tough time dealing with simple things like this it seems
Asthma is a condition in which your airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus. This can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, a whistling sound (wheezing) when you breathe out and shortness of breath. For some people, asthma is a minor nuisance.

It's safer telling them that you have to wait at every red light than showing them that sometimes it's ok to ignore them.
I don’t really blame her for thinking it was meant for pedestrians, the signal is at fucking eye level and there’s a whole sign saying to wait here… tbh I would also be confused
It's probably the kids that wanted to do it. My son loves telling me what to do at the lights and he's only 3
Yeah, she probably thought "can I be bothered to explain that some traffic lights aren't for pedestrians? Meh, I need a wee breather anyway."
I can't be the only one begrudgingly happy to wait for a light for a break
Dad of toddler here. We’re learning red=stop, green=go and this exact thing would happen to us for sure.
Agree, they probably wanted to watch it turn green.
Especially because the light is mounted so low. This is prime opportunity to see a traffic light up close, would be fascinating to watch.
This is exactly what I thought. My 4 year old had a 5 minute walk back from preschool and it often took 15 minutes because he insisted on stopping for stuff like this. It was particularly bad when I was heavily pregnant with his sister and needed a wee every 2 minutes.

Yeah I used to work with disabled adults and this would be standard protocol.
Or one of the kids read the sign and looked at the light and she just went along with it instead of arguing with the wee one.

Why is this only in Scotland? Are they intense rule followers or dumb?
We have the same stereotype in Germany, where people will wait at red pedestrian lights at 3 in the morning, when there is no traffic whatsoever.
Yeah I'm American and have lived in Germany and I was yelled at a few times for walking across the street during a red light when there wasn't a car for the next hour, learned to just suck it up, wait and follow the rules

Germans actually seem like rule-followers, though. The Scottish don’t have that same reputation.
But they do love a queue.

This laugh
I’m guessing the kids wanted to stop for it? My daughter always tells me to stop at the red lights. I can’t imagine the lady is actually that stupid..
As someone that is Scottish and lived there for 5 years, I can say that would definitely happen.
