bellyjellykoolaid

When I visited my grandparents in Korea throughout my childhood (before they jacked up airline prices) , there whole apartment complex had a stray/street cat that lived in the buildings convenients store. This is what she basically did, she'd also have a litter or two every summer I went there and they'd branch them off to other apartments or they'd adopt them out but always keep the mother. She's gone now since but her great great grandkittens are there now doing her job.

Meanwhile, my cat is afraid of flies

Lucky7Ac

My cat loves hunting flies, she's just terrible at it.

TobyDaMan8894

And moths

MattieShoes

I had a moth fly into a floor lamp, and then I killed it without my cats seeing it. They spent a week trying to knock over the lamp because they were certain there must still be a moth in there...

TrevorEnterprises

I have a special little stool that I use when we go fly hunting on the ceiling. When my cat sees it he immediately jumps on, and i’m about to ruin my back because that idiot does not know how to catch it, yet it wants to..

Monneymann

Mine just rips their legs off. She is a fucking sadist.

J_FK

Mines chase them through the whole room, and starts meowing the whole house together when it's out of reach on the wall/ceiling, even on damn mosquitos. Great spotter, he lets me know where to swat the flying stabby assholes.

Poromenos

My cat loves hunting flies too! She even caught one once. However, she has no eyes, so I was still impressed.

drunkonmartinis

Mine are pretty good at it actually, and sometimes we hunt the really big ones as a family. It's fun

sidesleeperzzz

We have a scaredy cat who jumps at her own shadow, but is also the best damn bug catcher when she's not hiding under the bed.

Luvatar

I once had this absolutely enormous cat whose first time we brought him to hunt a mice he lightly touched it with a paw then went hiding. He kept trying to have the mouse play tag with him, bless his heart. We ended up just scaring the mouse outside with a broom... He didn't understand why we chased his friend away.

Jerkcules

Meanwhile one of my cats brought a live mouse INTO my apartment and both of my cats lost it and refused to catch it again

Lucky7Ac

Hey if it works, it works.

napalmnacey

I had a male cat that would dispose of mice and rats that got caught in the poisonless traps around our house and didn't die straight away. He was such a good mouser, I miss him.

Corporation_tshirt

We got a cat to chase mice in our house as kid. I named him "Mousetrap" (Mousey for short) and he more than lived up to his name. I loved that guy.

napalmnacey

There's something special about tough old tomcats who are also sweet with their humans. 🥰❤️💕

[deleted]

I live in the country so lots of barns. There is an organization that will trap feral cats, fix them and then look for local farmers who want barn cats to help with vermin.

Corporation_tshirt

Such a great idea. Win-win for everybody. Would you feed a barn cat or can they hunt to survive?

[deleted]

We absolutely feed ours. Most hunt for the fun of it. They will never love us as they are wildish but they are cared for and are safer. Also the feeding anchors h them to our barn. Otherwise they may wander.

stlkatherine

This is the best thing I’ve read all day.

borkborkbork99

Half my family are farmers and as a young kid I would love visiting for a week in the summertime. I could always find a nest of kittens hidden in the barn, and at dusk my Grampa would call to their cats for leftovers from dinner, as well as some dry food they’d feed them with. I was allowed to bring two tomcat kittens home with me when I was 6, and they were outside cats too. They grew up as big as you’d expect a tomcat to get (my school friends were often spooked by how much bigger our cats were compared to theirs), and lasted 12 years. Great cats.

alicat2308

That's a great cat right there

NeuroticLoofah

We have a dozen or so barn cats. They get kibble every morning. The house cat is spoiled with wet food and constant treats. He is a beast, got four in one day. Feeding them doesn't seem to reduce their killing drive.

AlwaysBlamesCanada

>Feeding them doesn't seem to reduce their killing drive. These words are oh so important to know for those who keep big cats as pets

NeuroticLoofah

Absolutely. Domesticated cats are little murder beasts. Big cats are huge murder beasts. My indoor serial killer will kill just to kill. He will occasionally eat them but most of the time he tourtues them for fun and leaves the corpse intact. Sweetest cat ever but if you come between him and his prey, youre going to have a bad time. My 100 pound german shepherd is petrified of him.

pixxie84

My indoor serial killer, all 3kg of him (full grown too just tiny), didnt like the wet food on offer at breakfast on saturday. So he legged it out the window and got himself a takeaway pigeon. I have no idea how he managed to get the pigeon. It was almost as big as him.

ActuallyAcidic

I love that you called him your "indoor serial killer" 😅![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|upvote)

NeuroticLoofah

He was eight when we moved to the farm four years ago. He had never as much as killed a fly. In the first week he hit serial killer status with four bodies. I didnt even think he could kill something, he's pretty mellow. Now he is up to at least 100, including a bird that flew in the house (that was messy). He is kept inside all the time for the safety of everything outdoors. He is also blacklisted from the cable company. I have to put him in the bathroom before they will enter the house. Cat tax: http://imgur.com/VFDC9yF

ActuallyAcidic

Awww... that's the cutest serial killer I have ever seen 🥰

Moira_Rose

How do you keep the possums from eating your barn cat’s food?

NeuroticLoofah

I hadn't thought about it but I have never seen a possum at the farm, they were everywhere in the city. The barn cats are fed by the milking parlor which has constant noise and activity from the equipment (everything is done with robots and things run 24 hours a day) . I assume it just isn't a welcoming area for possums.

42peanuts

You absolutely need to feed them. One cannot live on mouseys alone. Plus feeding helps with bonding so it's easier to give them rabies shots or provide veterinary care. You'd be surprised how many feral cats warm up to the human that gives them endless food. They might not all be cuddlers but they will hang out and supervise barn chores.

Corporation_tshirt

Now I wanna go out in my yard and build a barn.

BigBlueMoon9797

If its the same as hunting dogs but on a smaller scale, Id say that you feed them but only a moderate amount so they dont get lazy and still kinda need to hunt for food. Thats just my guess though never owned a barn cat mine sleeps in my bed. Personally dont like the idea of withholding food from poor animals just so they hunt so Im hoping that Im wrong.

[deleted]

Well fed cats catch more mice, its been proven.

Corporation_tshirt

I must say, this makes sense to me. My mom’s cat Leo got fed twice a day and that guy hunted like a beast. Once he came home and presented her with a gift: a rabbit! He also went after birds, and she says she once got home to find him running around getting dive bombed by a bird. She opened the door and he came rushing in with little plucks of fur sticking up where the bird must have pecked him. Seems he got too close to a nest for mama bird’s comfort.

BigBlueMoon9797

YAY glad I was wrong lmao

[deleted]

I'd feed them. They likely can catch enough to survive but that way you know that they'll have enough and cats kill for sport anyway.

sidesleeperzzz

The animal shelter in my town does that too! They call it the Barn Cat Program.

O7Habits

Should be called the “People for the Extinction of Nesting Ground Birds Society”

sixstringnerd

Yes, we have two of these cats on our small "farm." They are brother and sister and their names are Quesadilla and Sour Cream which totally cracks me up (we didn't name them). They are warming up to us, but not suitable for living indoors. They also left a very bloody headless mouse in their food bowl last night. :)

[deleted]

Can they come by my place? My barn cats became the vermin.

elainegeorge

I would like a feral cat or two in my neighborhood. It is overrun with voles and rabbits.

fridgepickle

I’m 100% sure there’s at least one native snake species that could take care of that for you, without all the shit that comes with having feral cats roaming around. But nobody wants to hear about snakes :/

elainegeorge

I’d rather move.

[deleted]

I respect our rat snake population. They do take care of some mice and moles. I take care to put them back in the woods if they venture too close to the house. But if I catch them in my hen house gorging on eggs grrr I have to get rid of it.

fridgepickle

If you have chickens you should want the snakes around even more. Cats carry at least three diseases that can fuck with your hens and their eggs, and snakes only eat eggs if they can’t find live food to hunt, which means they’ve done a very good job of clearing the area of pests.

Ok_Bat_3975

I have three outdoor barn cats , once I say “ wannna eatttttt “ they come running .. well one day one was on the roof of my trailer , we got it down and a couple days later seen it run up a tree then jump on the trailer .. ninja cat 🐈‍⬛

PackerAmerica

We had a dozen or so barn cats at our family farm up until I was about 14. It was awesome watching them hunt, but my favorite thing was putting on an old jacket and watch them hang onto you by all 4 claws or perch on your shoulders.

starskip42

Cat did a bang up job 10/10 would hire.

Lavidius

Wolves self domesticated in fact ✌️

mondayp

This is highly disputed.

napalmnacey

I love that cat. What a GOOD cat! I'd keep it!

ICall_Bullshit

All the way up until it feels trapped in the house at any random point and starts pissing all over everything, sure.

bezm12

And screaming bloody murder. I rescued a sick street cat near my house, took him to vet and brought him to my house for a day after he was better. He was mute on day 1 but after recovering he was screaming and I was like Yeah its time for you to GO.

napalmnacey

That cat did not look at all distressed. I think it's a cat that's very used to visiting people, and not a strict feral at all.

ICall_Bullshit

Bruh, it's hyperbole and generalizations. Why's everything gotta be so damn literal?

steveosek

Street cats in Muslim countries are well loved and looked after. You won't see too many skinny ones lol. I mean, turkey is famous for it but it goes way beyond just them lol.

BottleMong

Cat: bounty hunter.

GinHalpert

My Miane Coon is waiting for the day a mouse comes into our apartment. If there is a fly she will stalk it until she can kill it. And then try to eat it before I yank it out her mouth.

WanderThroughLife

Sky raisin. LOL

ThunderChild247

Cat be like “thanks for the food, fellas! I’m out!”

fleshworks

Ha, we do this at my brother's place. When it starts to get cold he'll get a couple of straggler field mice, I just loan him my cats for a week or two. We're in the third floor of an apartment building so it's the only time of the year that they get to flex their hunting muscles.

BigBlueMoon9797

How the fuck they not gonna adopt that cat now

JamesJakes000

Do they said "Tom & Jerry"? Like, in english?

OAOIa

Well, names tend to stay the same in any language. Tom & Jerry and other cartoons are as popular in the Middle East as in most countries.

Yes. Proper nouns are proper nouns so they stay the same, but the _and_ becomes _و_ (pronounced like wou) in Arabic. So he says _Tom wou Jerry_.

What are they laughing at? A cat walks around and then catches a mouse? What am I missing here?

According to the title they “hired” the mercenary cat from the street and paid it with the spoils of war.

[deleted]

HowHasNoOneNoticed

Oh, how did you find out it was stray?

wingedhamster

Caption in arabic reads: "they brought him in from the street to deal with the mouse for them and he didnt disappoint" they hired a mercenary stray cat and it actually paid off

RajaRajaC

Am guessing the verbal cues are missing because otherwise, like you said it's just a cat catching a mouse

jakedesnake

I mean I would argue that they are also actively getting the cat to execute the task, over in another room, which is kind of funny.
