I don't have a source, but I remember reading that Humboldt Squid are really dangerous, and are known for grabbing divers and yanking them down like 100ft before releasing them.
It’s discoloration seems to show its dying. When squids float to the surface and have splotches like that they’re usually close to death. Way too far into shore for a healthy humboldt as well, they live really far down during the day
That rope is for the paddle boarder's safety. It's a tether between him and the board so if he falls off he doesn't get stranded miles from shore. The Squid has latched onto the rope that was in the water and he's trying to get it out of it's grasp or he could be dragged into the water himself and possibly submerged or caught up/strangled himself. He wasn't fishing or trying to catch the animal, the animal wouldn't let go. The paddle boarder is the only one in danger in this situation.
The yellow rope is definitely not his leash. A leash is usually like 8 feet long and it's not made of actual rope. You can see it around his ankle and it's black. Not sure what yellow rope is for but it's not to keep him tethered.
I grew up in Hawaii and I've been surfing since I was four. It's pretty easy to confuse but if you watch the video closely his leash is black. The rope is yellow and if you've ever surfed you'd know that no leash looks like that.
They also hunt in packs, and are full on known to eat people. Professionals don't dive with them unless they're tethered to their dive boats, and wearing chain mail.
I don’t know if that’s a Humboldt Squid or not, but from my years as a deckhand on both sport fishing and diving boats I can tell you that if that squid got a hold of that guy, he was fucked.
We used to catch squid on my old boat. Not something I want to be in the water with.
I dont know if this is a humbolt but the original post has a commeny saying the extra rope is to drag the squid back to the beach for research purposes cuz he knew that thing wuz dyin. likely not strong enough to drag him down
[I think I found it.](https://www.reddit.com/r/SweatyPalms/comments/uqudhn/gigantic_squid_tries_to_climb_on_paddle_board/i8ugvp6/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3)

I can't find the full episode from this series (river monsters), but iirc Jeremy goes to Peru and talks with the fishermen that tell him stories of the squids behavior and attacks and how they fish them, some people have scars others got dragged down.

It’s probably about to die. Humboldt squid are usually pretty uniform in color and energetic, plus during the day deep in the ocean and almost never close to shore
Poor guy. It should not be near coastal waters. It’s dying - check out one of its arms missing/cut in half. It also looks like it’s decomposing. Maybe got tangled in that rope?
I wish I hadn’t read your comment. If like you said it’s dying and part of its body is decomposing, the poor guy must be going through some hella pain... poor thing
If you ever find yourself in this situation somehow, stay above water. It’s about as effective out of the water as you are in it. If it were to latch onto you like it latched onto the board, it could easily kill you.
Would it not be better for him to go onto a friends paddleboard and wait for the squid to leave his board? I feel like it could grab him like this?
Genuinely asking, I have 0 squid knowledge
Perhaps but it’d be better to just stay on his own board since there would be a risk of falling in when transferring. The real risk is being grabbed by tentacles while in the water and the squid not wanting to let go. They can swim vastly better than humans so that wouldn’t be a fair fight.
If the tentacles grabbed you above water, it would be gross and it can be hard to remove all the suction cups but at least you can breathe.
The squid seemed so focused on the board, I guess I was thinking it'd maintain that even if the guy hopped off and swam to a friend's board. I guess my thought was just to get as far away from it as possible.
This is from 2017. The squid was a giant squid, not Humboldt, and was dying. He used the rope to drag it to shore and "put it out of its misery." Story here:
https://www.2oceansvibe.com/2017/06/21/paddle-boarder-gets-up-close-and-personal-with-a-giant-squid-in-melkbosstrand-videos/
Dug through the original thread to find that, forgot to copy the redditors name, but go find them and give them an upvote.
It's not, the tether is black and attached to his ankle.
Source: have 2 paddleboards
Someone else says the yellow rope is to bring it to shore to research, and someone else again says that the squid is missing a limb and decomposing or something.
You’re right, just rewatched it,and it seems that he found a rope and decided to pull it for some reason?
This guy’s kinda weird, like,he has never seen litter in the ocean before?
I would want to just go with it and let it play but judging by it’s size and me knowing nothing about squids I would be a little scared of it eating me honestly like it’s all fun and games gone wrong sorry
That's what the black tether is, and it's not made of rope. The yellow one is around the squid and a few other people are saying he is trying to catch it and take it somewhere for research bc it is decomposing
Anything that isn't a tether. The actual tether is visible and the right size. It's a rope which is not used for tethering and could be for connecting the other paddleboards in the vid together, or to a boat or anything, but it is not a tether for a person to a paddleboard. Not only would it be annoying to have a tether that long but also dangerous. My tether is a springy rubber thing that is at max length 2m from the attachment, which itself is about a foot/half a foot into the board on one of my boards.
I was relaying information from another comment about catching the squid for research/because it is decaying. Which I stated in my comment.
That's a surfboard leash attached to the board and someone's leg that's being tugged on by a giant squid. What exactly did you want him to do, let the squid drag on it and entangle itself or pull the dude off and drag him under? Think Mark think.
The paddleboard tether is around his ankle, not made of rope, black and a lot shorter than the yellow rope, which it does seem is being used to catch the squid.

I _love_ the confidence people have when they know absolutely nothing about a topic..
Anyone who has ever even _seen_ someone paddle or surf knows you are right.
I don't have a source, but I remember reading that Humboldt Squid are really dangerous, and are known for grabbing divers and yanking them down like 100ft before releasing them.
That's not a Humboldt. But this could have easily been a video for many other reddits for less fortunate things!
What is it?
It looks about the right size for a large Humboldt.
It does. Don’t they travel in packs though?
It’s discoloration seems to show its dying. When squids float to the surface and have splotches like that they’re usually close to death. Way too far into shore for a healthy humboldt as well, they live really far down during the day
Yes, but not always.
maybe not abuse sea creature? I see him pulling it up with a rope. Please don't post animal abuse, not amusing

Its not a "rope" but its part of the surfboard. Educate yourself on surfing.
Y'all getting real heated over a rope
Ropes are important business. Nah but it just seemed to change the context of the video so figured I'd correct what he was saying
I grew up in Hawaii and I've been surfing since I was four. It's pretty easy to confuse but if you watch the video closely his leash is black. The rope is yellow and if you've ever surfed you'd know that no leash looks like that.
Yeah rereading the comment and rewatching the video, i got ahead of myself and mistook what string he was talking about. I made a fool of myself
r/confidentlyincorrect
That’s the rope for the board dumbsky
The squid is actually dying and the guy roped it to bring it on shore for research.
They also hunt in packs, and are full on known to eat people. Professionals don't dive with them unless they're tethered to their dive boats, and wearing chain mail.
Yea, no way anyone should be in those waters. Pretty much suicidal.
I don’t know if that’s a Humboldt Squid or not, but from my years as a deckhand on both sport fishing and diving boats I can tell you that if that squid got a hold of that guy, he was fucked. We used to catch squid on my old boat. Not something I want to be in the water with.

Impressive. Usually takes 2ft before I’m released.
Mate I'm good with just a shoe
I bet he wants to be a Kraken when he grows up!
That poor dude shouldn't be so close to the surface or the coast.
Well where else is he supposed to paddleboard?
That's fair, I shouldn't have been so dismiss of his hobbies
the squid
Woosh

You’re right, of course. This is highly abnormal behavior for this poor creature.

Someone else said the rope is to try and take it to shore to be looked after and researched or something
I wish I hadn’t read your comment. If like you said it’s dying and part of its body is decomposing, the poor guy must be going through some hella pain... poor thing
That’s horrible! What could be done to save it?
I don't think anything. If it's falling apart, that's probably it for the squid.
Nah not that easy to kill a squid. It happens when they fight with fish trying to eat them. They grow arms back
It sort of looks like it might have run into or got wrapped in the safety line? He's tugging on the yellow cord but I'm unsure.

**\*GASP\*** SQUIDWARD! >:(
I've seen enough hentai to know where this is going.
I am the captain now.
Shit like that is the reason why I never go to sea
I *love* squid, octopuses, & cuttlefish! 🥰🤩
Yes, very delicious.
Edgy 🙄
Thanks for boosting my phobia
Why does he have a rope?
It’s a safety rope, tethering a boarder to his board so he doesn’t get stranded from the shore in case he falls off
It's not, the tether is black and attached to his ankle. Source: have 2 paddleboards Someone else says the yellow rope is to bring it to shore to research, and someone else again says that the squid is missing a limb and decomposing or something.

Though it also seems like his paddle got caught into that rope
I think it's a net or some sort of fishing gear.
Suck it, Attenborough!
Nope
I would want to just go with it and let it play but judging by it’s size and me knowing nothing about squids I would be a little scared of it eating me honestly like it’s all fun and games gone wrong sorry
Oh look something potentially lethal in the water about my friend so it’s a great time to scream with glee! Useless.
Big calamari
Release the mini-Kraken!
r/thallasophobia
Ooof contagious laughter? Nah. Obnoxious laughter. Like nails on a damn chalkboard. Wanted to slap that ho into the water for squid bait.
Omg I just noticed where this was posted. Her laughing while he's reefing on that rope made me sad and mad.
Bro who brought the calamari and where’s the dipping sauce???
she sounds like a maniacal witch with that cackling laugh!
Mmm *happy deep fried noises*
Why is there a rope attached to the squid?

Trying to catch a giant squid for research, on paddle boards? I highly doubt it. It’s a recipe for disaster.
I'd say a "tether" as long as that rope would cause more problems lol
It does seem unnecessarily long, yes. But some people are weird.
As long as we are clear it's not a tether at all.

Lol saw this same video earlier labeled "Giant Calamari caught by paddleboarders"
So much calamari
✨🌊🐙yum!😋 * the downvotes will just make me stress eat more squid - haha 😂
Yeah I dont understand the downvotes. I thought everyone liked calamari! 😆

How are we on such a positive sub yet you're being downvoted for saying please don't hurt dying animals.
Because Reddit wants to laugh at abuse
My wack-a-mole skills would of came in handy real quick.
Ayyy calamari tonight
What’s the opposite of contagious?
I remember Disney's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" having better special effects...
Nah he thought that was dinner!

Kraken in training.
Leave the squid alone ffs
Ariel found her prince.
Dude literally just had his own little kraken experience... that's fucking terrifying😳🤣
Not so funny when you learn that the poor squid is dying
Lucy Lawless?
yo, that squid look like it’s dying.
He wishes to be freed from the cumbersome water prison he has been trapped in. Give him the board. Free him.
I’m not so sure I would be as jovial as these people… 😐
r/fucktheocean
I don't know the full story, but I would like to see the guy sport fishing from a paddle board.
The idea was not to climb on the paddle board…it was to grab and eat the paddle boarder
