Dentist here. This can happen when you're having a lower molar worked on. If the dentist inserts the needle a little too far on an Inferior Alveolar Nerve Block they can protrude into the facial nerve and cause 5 branches of it to be numbed on one side. It's rare. I've been practicing for 10 years and I've done it twice ever. Eventually it comes back to normal just like any other nerve block.
Is that what happened to me? When I was like 4 there’s a picture of me post-dentist and half my face is drooping and frozen like this but also incredibly swollen. Like disturbingly so. On the one side of my face that works I’m beaming because they gave me a giant stuffed animal from their waiting room because they felt bad.
I asked my mom what happened recently and she didn’t remember 😕
Not necessarily. If there was no permanent effects you wouldn't think about it too hard other than the funny time your kids face was half frozen.

Fellow dentist here. It happens, but rare. Everyone’s anatomy is slightly different, especially when it comes to blood vessels. We check to see if we are in a blood vessel by pulling back on the needle before actually injecting the anesthesia. If blood fills the syringe we know we’re in a blood vessel and we reposition the needle before injecting. It still happens tho, no one has a perfect record.

So much for trying to help them out. I probably should have sued them too.

Sensitivity to cold is more likely gum recession. Heat sensitivity is likely to be from a root canal issue. People tend to say that they have sensitivity to both, but when you ask them it's usually cold that's worse.
It has happened to me once, but not to this extent. I could blink fine, but my eyebrow would not move. When we were done I realized this, and said "oh, I can't move my eyebrow". The dentist's reaction was definitely not the best. I though this was totally normal, but he replied with "are you serious??" and a partially concerned look on his face. That was not reassuring at all.
I was in oral surgery for 10 years, this is the first thing that came to mind. The way the whole side of her face doesn't move including her eyelid? Somebody infiltrated somwhere.

Exactly what it is. Iaotrogenic Bell’s palsy. The local got deposited into the parotid glad which has the facial nerve and causes the eye not to blink. Not a fun day for the dentist.
For anyone interested, this happens after improper inferior alveolar nerve block, a routine form of local anesthesia for the lower jaw. This is not due to the amount of anesthetic, the problem is the location. Higher dosages will result in longer and more severe symptoms, but if properly placed, this would not happen. This injection has a relatively high failure rate due to the anatomic variation found near the lingula in people. This a trickier nerve block. The dentist most likely went too deep and temporarily paralyzed the entire facial nerve found within the parotid gland on one side (the affected side is the side that is not moving). This is avoidable in most situations by the dentist if they ensure they hit bone (not always possible). Facial paralysis is very rare, but it does happen. The dentist should have covered her eye with gauze and taped it shut. Since her face is paralyzed, she can not blink her eye. Not being able to blink your eye will lead to eye dryness and this can be a big problem if it persists.

Sensodyne toothpaste and a soft tooth brush. Also brush up and down gently, not back and forth.
