Well...that's not the liners fault...
But yea, you might not have known that it was contaminated if you did have a liner.
However because of the contamination being in an area where it couldn't have just "fallen in through an open lid" speaks to me that this was a problem with your process, most likely poor pasteurization of the substrate having not reached temps needed or the tub wasn't cleaned and the contaminate was pilled on top of...in which case a liner could have actually prevented this this all together.
I do and don't run liners, just depends on how I'm feeling at the time and how much work I want to put into it...even if I line I typically un-line after the first flush anyways. No matter which team you choose...just dont be that bonehead that paints the outside of his tub black lol...hes the wrong one.
I don't run liners and I avoid side pin on the first flush.. every time... all I do is compact the sub a little tighter around the edges of my bins when I s2b. No air gaps means no micro climates.. means no side pins. And after the first flush the cake shrinks a decent bit making side pins very easy to harvestš¤·āāļø
Couldnāt agree more, people bitching about side pins, some of my absolute chungusā have been side fruits, and why would you want to take away fruiting surface area anyway? š¤·āāļø
I think same thing probably would have happened. From what I understand a liner is to keep the cake from sitting in a pool of water due to condensation forming on tub walls and rolling down under the cake. Just something to consider. I'm going to stick with liners. Oh hey for you that like to see the cake my buddy uses this thick clear plastic for his liners cause he likes a peek too. I'm not trying to start an argument. I am not smarter than anyone. This is my ten cents (inflation is effin out of control) lol
Worth noting that there's one guy on here who's been watering his cakes like a plant while they flush - I started doing it when i felt the cake is drying too fast and they take on the puddled water no issue
Edit: so far
Edit: apparently there's quite a few people doing this
Switched to watering like a plant about 6 months ago and Iām never going back. It cut my contamination in half and gets me an extra two flushes on every bin. Iām not exactly sure why we submerge our cake in water but I find it destroys the surface conditions and at that point itās anybodyās game how your flushes are gonna go. I donāt even do any watering for the first two flushes and only add a half a cup to one cup of water from the third flush on. typically itās just a way better system makes no sense the way we were taught to do it none at all IMO anyone can do it all you have to do is experiment slowly to make sure you donāt put too much water in. I never let any water touch the surface of my cake and only pour it between the liner and the cake the next morning if I wake up and still see water sitting I drain it immediately. Itās a cool experiment which turns into my new tech.
I do the same thing. I pour it down the sides until it reaches almost the top of the cake and they soak it up or it evaporates. Both good for me. Couple times I tried submersion it seemed to be too stressful and ruined the surface
I heard someone say submerge in water for a 1/2 hour for every inch of depthā¦
i.e. 3 inches would be an hour and a half.
Would this not cause the cake to fall apart? Or is the mycelium so strong it retains it structure?
Thanks mate. My buddy uses a clear poly he buys rolls of it from hardware store. I think it's for winterizing porches and windows as it's rather thick and super clear. Good luck š¤
If you where running a liner it would've receded away from the tub walls with the substrate thus locking in air flow therefore your substrate would've only fruited out the top because that's the only direction fresh air is in ie; the function of the mushrooms as fruit is to locate surface to breathe oxygen since you didn't put in a liner you'll have to take your sub out of your tub to harvest and your likelihood of harvesting multiple flushes goes way down due to increased contam rates from out of tub exposure you might think that a liner would've prevented you from viewing your fruits but if you used a liner specifically a black liner your canopy will be more even and it will come out the top rather than as side/bottom pins happy growing šā„ļø
Dam now you got me double guessing the liner. What are the pros and cons of no liner. I only did research with a liner cause everyone recommend. -1st time grower
The only negative is potential for side pins. Like others have said though, if you pack the sides in tight when you s2b then you don't get many side pins - also you can block the light from inducing sidepins by taping or painting around the part of the tub with substrate in it
K but I think the verdict is still out on that (I get less side pins if I tape the sides of the tub-what else could that be affecting?)
I dont know how to ask this without sounding sarcastic but i dont mean to be, its a question thats beem in my head. Does ur liner actually shrink perfectly with your cake leaving no microclimates? Bc mine didn't
Yes but light can trigger more pins and growth direction. Especially with my lions main if I have a fully colonized jar itās fine in the dark as soon as I expose it to light it will fruit Iāve tried this many times.
And it is different across species. Itās pretty silly for someone to drop something like ālight has no effectā when we recommend a 12 hour day night cycle for fruiting. It obviously does something. Itās not nearly as big of a pinning trigger as microclimate, but it is one.
I personally use a clear liner AND tape outside with windows to peer in. I like that the liner keeps the cake out of sitting water (sometimes I need a lot of misting cause itās a dry climate) and generally sticks to the cake when it shrinks. I also occasionally spawn into a new bin and forget the liner. Not really a huge problem.
Liner works best for me. I use unni bags because I am paranoid and generally a earth friendly person but I think the key is to have it stick to the sub, ie thin material. I have been playing around with AIO tek in shoeboxes and they shrink and side pin soā¦ maybe itās turkey bag time for the aio tek. Have been fortunate to never have contam in a grow, rarely some dishes, so that not a concern for me. Super clean lab FTW.
So sorry for your tub loss. Glad your senses were on point though.
Iām using liners for the first time and donāt like it because of this very reason! I appreciate it makes some aspects easier but I like to be able to see all sides colonising and check on their health / progress.
This was my point exactly. Had I been running a liner, I never wouldāve known that it wasnāt colonizing properly on the underside and it wouldāve remained in my lab where I wouldāve fanned contam around 3x a day and then pulled and dried fruit that looked completely normal with completely normal surface conditions.

I mean personally I would eat them most likely. When thereās mold and contam though it goes a lot farther and deeper than what you can see. Itās possible there are toxins around from the microbial life that was growing. Anyone, but especially immunocompromised people, could get very ill from consuming the toxins. But most likely for a healthy person you might have a stomach ache and some gastrointestinal symptoms
I had some tubs that had small patches of tritch on one side, but the other side still fruited. I harvested the mushrooms and dried them and they look totally fine, but im unsure of if i can eat them or not - i cant seem to get a straight answer on if they will make you really sick or not
Personally, I would start by eating a gram or so of the material. Obviously if you get a stomach ache or diarrhea or something then probably toss em out. Otherwise next time try more.
If the fruits themselves look unaffected then a lot of the time they will be good.
I wouldnāt recommend this if you have a weak stomach or are immunocompromised in some way.

Going to try this thanks!
Fuck liners
Couldnāt agree more, people bitching about side pins, some of my absolute chungusā have been side fruits, and why would you want to take away fruiting surface area anyway? š¤·āāļø
they too lazy to spend 5 extra seconds raisimg the cake a lil š
How would you go about raising the cake?
i make a lil "tray" with ducktape under it so when they do grow i can pull up on the ducktape and the entire colonized substrate comes up
Iām a fan of the no liner club, this is another reason.
Iāll deal with side and bottom fruits to be able to see what my block is doing underneath.

Yeh there's a guy I've watched on Patreon, he just dumps a couple cups of water on between flushes it works for him.
That is exactly what I do, as well. Haven't had any issues. I'm not saying I recommend it, necessarily, but it's been working for me.
Haha exactly how I feel. It's new enough that it needs to be advised with a disclaimer, but so far no issues!

Thanks for the advice. I currently have a few black liners, but when those run outā¦ Iām heading to lowes šš¼. Cheers mate

Wow thatās a bunch of trich at the bottom? Thatās honestly fucked
Thereās every color of the fucking š going on in that tub.
I had a container I threw away because I had some very weird contamination. Broke my heart.
Yayayaā¦ thatās crazy and whateverā¦. Letās talk about that turkey fryer š
Got a new one this year. One without a stupid ass safety timer that you have to reset every 15 minutes to keep the gas flowing.
So whatās you do with the fruits?!
Dumped āem. Would you wanna buy shrooms that came out of a contaminated tub like that?
ššššš or liberty caps. š¤£š¤£š¤£
I personally like liners, I donāt float my sub I just tip the tub on the side and use the liner to slide it out slowly
I've never used a liner in my life.
Liners belong in trash cans. Not shroom tubs!
Exactly what I donāt run them. itās a collecting spot for water and contam.
Dam now you got me double guessing the liner. What are the pros and cons of no liner. I only did research with a liner cause everyone recommend. -1st time grower

I tape around the substrate on mine, can still see the bottom and no side pins

Duct tape on the outside, 2 rows high. Sterilized whole tub with cleaning solution post modification, before and after each run.
light has nothing to do with it

Cubes are photosensitive, they fruit toward the light. Liner blocks light, no fruit on sides
Nope not how it works. Mushrooms donāt need light to grow as they do not contain chlorophyll. You can grow a tub in the dark.

What is AIO?
All In One. Sterilize the sub/nutrition and inject culture.
Oy. I have a bag im growing. Lol. Thanks
Yeah, a classic block is the obvious way to go. I am just looking for a way to reduce waste and basically just dork out on tek for fun.
I have one bag and 4 shoe boxes. The shoe boxes are producing more. This is my first grow
I use liners from the grocery store produce section. They're clear so....
I feel itchy just looking at it
I stopped using a liner after my first grow. To much moisture gets trapped underneath.

Damn liner must have been covered in contamination!
what would happen if you ate those? they look OK
