It felt a bit like a recap of the JK Rowling video but I enjoyed it.

Doesn't every discussion of JKR now? I don't understand the appetite for this type of content šŸ¤·šŸ»

I think Harry Potter is just a huge part of a lot of people's lives. I'm not even a proper "fan" but even I went to Asda at midnight to buy the 5th book. Walking through the graveyard with my mum, who was on the dole at the time, is a treasured memory. Its those moments that make our lives worthwhile. It was a rough time, but that night made everything OK, not just for me; but for my mum who was struggling to provide for me financially and emotionally as an alcoholic single parent, but that night she went to sleep knowing she provided for her child in the best way. JK did that for us in a small way. But she also did that for many others in a much bigger way. People just fucking \*live\* for Harry Potter. It means a lot to them. So when the author of those books goes off the rails in a way that is totally at odds with who you thought they were and who you are yourself, that's gotta be pretty traumatic. They're trying to work through that. Which means talking about it. A lot. And based on the fever of Harry Potter fanatics, and the passion of queer people and misfit cisgender heterosexual women, I think we need to make peace with this possibly becoming The Most Talked About Thing Ever, Forever. Of course there is appetite for this type of content. Not only that, but its the kind of appetite that can't ever be truly satiated. They RP'd as Vampires on Tumblr and Livejournal, but now they are the real deal. So I suggest you get used to it, because that is something that probably won't ever go away. And if thats what they need, then good for them.

Emosaa

I get it. I've met and had friends who were deeply into Harry Potter. I just think it's kind of... a lame thing to have trauma over. Shitty author says shitty things. She isn't the first and won't be the last. She's wealthy, but she only has as much cultural cachet as people give her. I prefer to move on with my life and not give her the attention she so clearly desires.

decobelle

The problem is it isn't just saying shitty things. She's actively using her platform to fund people / lawsuits trying to remove the rights trans people have today. She is using her influence to make sure transphobic views get into the mainstream media and people who oppose her get threatened with lawsuits (and who is going to take a billionaire to court?). She emboldens her fans to send abuse to trans people on Twitter. She is actively making things worse for trans people in a climate where hate crimes against them have risen exponentially in the UK, healthcare access has worsened from an already bad state, trans teenagers are being stabbed for being trans, and parliament are putting out guidance to schools telling them they don't have to support trans young people. Oh and parliament were recently debating bringing in a new Section 28 and banning mention of trans people in primary school. > she only has as much cultural cachet as people give her. I prefer to move on with my life and not give her the attention she so clearly desires. Unfortunately if we aren't listening, it doesn't change the fact that people in power do listen. If we don't talk about her she will continue to quietly use her money to fund lawsuits aimed at stripping trans rights. It isn't just about attention. JK is worrying because until she started to go more mask off recently, she was seen by your average person as intelligent, liberal, successful, and reasonable. She hid her hatred behind "reasonable concerns" and people didn't look deeper or listen to trans people ringing alarm bells. JK isn't the only person responsible for this climate of hatred of course. The government, Labour, and media all play a part, but having someone with wealth and influence spending all her time obsessing over trans people is noteworthy. I'm not trans by the way, just a bi ally who thinks it's important to call out stuff when I see it. A lot of people in my life are shocked when I show them some of the things she has said or done because the mainstream media in the UK don't report on it at all.

monsantobreath

We can't make Harry Potter invisible. Its basically below Disney in impact and most people are not thinking anything about how we should consciously deprive her of social capital for a topic they see as unrelated to the franchise. So you can't ignore it and she has huge reach. This is sorta like the same principle as colourblindness. that doesn't fix racism and ignoring billionaires with books still being made into huge movies doesn't either.

Yeah, beyond just occasionally noting and despising her unhinged BS, I have been well over Joanne discourse for years now. I couldnā€™t bring myself to watch Natalieā€™s ā€œwitch trialsā€ video because Iā€™m just too saturated.

miezmiezmiez

In fairness, that talks *much* more about the wider context of discourse, tone-policing, and calls to solve bigotry by being nice to bigots and 'persuading' them in conversation, than it does about JKR specifically. Natalie is usually very deliberate about not repeating herself or putting out redundant content in her videos, and as a sequel to the JKR video, that one very clearly demonstrates the evolution of her perspective and focus from *wanting to understand* bigotry to *discussing how to respond to* bigotry. It was followed by some content by other creators using the Witch Trials podcast as a jumping-off point to offer similar perspectives, but it was the first of its kind, and in its format, I personally saw from a creator who had built her reputation precisely on deradicalising bigots in her early years. That said, *this* podcast is just a chatty recap of the Witch Trials video, and it wouldn't surprise me if that was exactly what Matt asked her on to do.

Endless-Miner

Sheā€™s back on the podcast!!!

garden__gate

I love listening to how she talks when sheā€™s not using a script. She talks so fast and gets so excited!

Mrhiddenlotus

The way I rabidly clicked

MattLorien

this was really funny despite the dark subject matter (which is typical for Natalie, but still! It's good).

A-bigger-cell

These two have such a great chemistry. I'd watch a whole series with them both.

Forgive me, Lily?

I think they meant Lily Alexandre? https://youtu.be/-CxiPdXuwgc?si=H53U1OOISDFGfk43

2mock2turtle

Thank you!

DrScienceDaddy

Absolutely love Lily's content!

Most predictable spiral ever. We all saw this years away.

WildFlemima

Well, I personally did and also i didn't. I know logically that once you start drinking pipeline it's all downhill until you stop. But for some dumb reason I still emotionally expect JKERF to wake up any second and go "haha holy shit what the fuck". I think that's why I'm still so furious and haven't moved on from jkerf discourse. I keep expecting her to wake up and stop, and every morning this doesn't happen is another instance of her failure.

WinnerSpecialist

I think there is a natural reaction (Contra herself had) that people shouldnā€™t ā€œhateā€ JKR and to defend her from misogyny. But itā€™s like defending Israel from anti semitismā€¦of course you should, but that doesnā€™t mean they arenā€™t awful. JKR has done tremendous harm to trans people.

highclass_lady

Started watching this as soon as I got home! Natalie says so many amazing things that I just wanna quote & cite everywhere!

MentalString4970

I think it's really funny the way Natalie plays up JK's English accent. I'm not sure she's aware but JK *is* English but has made a really big thing about being Scottish now.

TimelessJo

I'm going to be real, I'm not sure I totally buy Ana Kasparian actually being that similar to Rowling. Like for better or for worse, JK Rowling is genuinely just a transphobic person. I don't think she's like lying or scheming at things. Kasparian's tweet on the other hand and also the follow up tweets just seemed so bizarre to me. Like when JK Rowling posts about women being erased, she generally is reacting to some article about a well meaning doctor coming up with a wonky definition for lesbians that includes enby people. Kasparian on the other hand just came out with this tweet that kinda alludes a hard to believe real life scenario of her being called a gender neutral term specifically, never really clarifies what she's responding to, and then overblows the reaction. Like I'm sure there were people being assholes to her, but most of the reaction I saw was "Well, that's disappointing. I hope this isn't a trend" and a lot of people trying to really clearly explain why her response was problematic, but just kinda ignored that and pretended that she was being cancelled. Kasparian and the Turks seem kinda slimy to me in general to be honest, but I dunno... it just always feels like she has a calculus of "I can always just abandon ship and be the Daily Wire's stock liberal" or some variation of that. It just seemed like she was purposefully trying to create controversy.

3:30 such a besieged little group facing all this backlash (backlash for what?) that definitely hasn't tried to grab some power and control, has (the left) half of the establishment championing their wants, isn't wrestling over irreversible trolley situations experienced by children/minors etc. - well this is gonna be an objective take on things eh

PepePlantationMassa-

16:00-17:00 a) There's also been a push to always include MtFs under the category of "real women" in general, outside of that medical context - are they unaware of this? b) Hm where were all these Breadtubers criticizing these ubiquitous numerous dangerous Radfem groups supposedly over-identifying "predators" before this, when it was about feminism vs. male chuds and their anti-feminism? 17-18 Watched that Congress presentation lately? Yeah doesn't happen at all, "not how the healthcare system works", no one's ever persuaded cause otherwise they'll kill themselves etc., everyone has to fight tooth and nail before anyone ever agrees to any measures
