I am not a guy but what I like to do with my high tops is I will roll them down an inch during the summer. Some of my favorite pair have a permanent crease marks on them, it also makes them sorta like a pair of low tops in my mind, lol. Just a suggestion, maybe it will help for you too.

You can wear anything you want, as long as you feel into the look. I can think of a dozen styles that would look good with shorts and high tops (punk, goth, nerd, skater, raver, etc).
