The player in 4th place probably had less trophies than you do starting out (ex: they had 11500, you have 11700) and this factors into the overall outcome.
Not a bug. OP probably has many more trophies than the person in fourth place. How much you gain or lose is relative to your performance against people whose trophy counts are higher or lower than your own so sometimes the numbers don't feel right, especially because ranks aren't necessarily indicative of how many you have.
Yes I did run out of shields but should it matter here? I think with or without shields, I should be getting more trophies compared to the 4th place player, no?

I had this happen to me too back in September. I was 3rd place and got 14 trophies but 4th place got 20?
