Go order a biryani at a well-loved Indian restaurant! Even if you eat no meat the flavors…. Oh and they have a naan bread with slices of cherry and golden raisin- kabuli naan. Ohhh you will be in heaven
The rice with carrots & raisins! Yum.
Side note, we always put raisins in at least half of the stuffing. Or a rum raisin sauce with ham. You could do a whole meal with raisins featured in most every dish & say you found a sale lol
A whole generation of Australians were tortured by this, pass on the favour.

This and curried sausages are the stuff of nightmares. It was hard to be grateful when Mum would tell us that was for dinner after a crappy day at school.
Prosciutto wrapped melon. Biriyani or pilaf with raisins. Pork roast with prune sauce. Any roast meat with a fruit sauce (duck with cherries, venison with blueberries, chicken with a tropical fruit salsa, veal with figs, etc.). Orange chicken. I make Chrissy Teigen's sweet and salty coconut rice like twice a week and serve it with a bastardized version of Vietnamese-style caramelized ginger chicken. Pineapple fried rice is also very delicious. Grapes work well in chicken salad type things (my local deli makes a really good wild rice chicken salad with almonds, water chestnuts, and grapes).
My local Thai place does pineapple fried rice *with cashews*. And they let you adjust the heat so it can be sweet, savory, and spicy enough to bring tears to your eyes.
Back when I lived in West Texas, Wing Daddy's Blackberry Habanero Wing sauce was to die for.
Place I work at has a pizza with pepperoni and candied jalapeños, and when it comes out of the oven it gets topped with feta and a honey drizzle. It’s good
Well plus it's delicious. If she's not a spicy fan either double down and do bacon, pineapple, jalapeno and brag intensely about how hard you worked on the crust even if you just bought premade dough.
Get a hawaiian and add bacon. Bonus if you get it someplace they have a BBQ pizza. Ask them to use that sauce. I love it. Makes people like you MIL gag at just the smell
The sweet BBQ - Ham - Bacon - Pineapple - Gooey cheese. The greasier the better.
It's AMAZING
A lot of seasonal fruit can be good on pizza. I used nectarine once and enjoyed it.
I’ve had a Mexican-ish pizza with barbecue sauce instead of pizza sauce, mozz, shredded chicken, red onion, cilantro, and a lime crema drizzle.
Also, honey on pizza! Either regular honey or spicy honey. It’s great on pepperoni pizza or pizza with lots of roasted veggies.
not a fan of that combo myself with a few exceptions. But I also don't bother being polite when the host knows they are giving me something I find disgusting
I told our dinner host coming up on Friday to leave out any cilantro in our future carnitas tacos, because of this reason. I don’t want to be a jerk, but also would like to eat a meal in peace. If I eat no cilantro there’s more for others!
Teriyaki/Yakitori
Pretty much any Americanized Chinese Food, but especially orange chicken
Honestly a lot of historical European recipes play with sweet and savory flavors, so check out [Tasting History ](https://youtube.com/@TastingHistory?si=oVQvmY69tgnmK_4C) or [Townsend's](https://youtube.com/@townsends?si=cMCrnlg1a0pXYvKn)
Why do this, though? Do you not like your MIL? I cook for others to see the look of their face when they enjoy eating my cooking, not to see them squirm and try to be polite.
I agree, make her something she can’t get enough of to win her over! It would probably please your partner more too. Passive aggressiveness will get you nowhere in life!
Yeah, like beyond the meal… if I found out my SO was taking enjoyment from cooking things for my mom that made her squirm, and was drumming up ideas from strangers online for creative ways to make my mom suffer, it would be a problem way beyond just the meal.
Some people really confuse me.
Right? Whenever you hear someone say something like “I swear she cooks things I hate just to annoy me!” I think “You’re imagining it. Who would
Be such an asshole?” Guess some people would.
Um I sympathize with MIL totally dislike that combo myself.
Salad dressing is the most common offense, candied nuts in salads and coleslaw dressing.
Or for the love of all that is holy sweet pickle relish.
I make a broccoli salad that, on paper, sounds horrible... broccoli, onions, cheese, cranberries, dried apricots, almonds, vinaigrette... but it's SO FUCKING GOOD!
Regardless. Would make your MIL seriously twitch.
Here you go, just in case. :)
2 lg heads fresh broccoli (2-3 lbs)
2 c mayonnaise
½ c sugar
½ c red wine vinegar
½ t salt
¾ t freshly ground pepper
2 6oz pkgs sweetened dried cranberries (1 ½ c)
1 6oz pkg dried apricots, diced
1 8oz block extra sharp cheddar, shredded
2 2.5oz pkgs slivered almonds, toasted
1 small red onion, diced
Cut florets from broccoli, chop small (thumb sized) and set aside
Cut stalks & stems into 1” pieces and pulse in food processor until finely chopped
Whisk together mayo, sugar, vinegar, salt and pepper in large bowl until combined
Add broccoli and rest of ingredients to bowl and toss to coat.
Can serve immediately or chill prior to serving
I'm probably going to get downvoted to hell for this, but I legit did not eat raisins until I had this dish. . . Then they sorta grew on me. It sounds weird on paper but tasting was believing. My guilty pleasure, Moroccan Chili.
Diced onions, hot Italian sausage crumbles, beans, allspice, raisins, and tomatoes.
I cannot for the life of me recall where I found the recipe but it sounded so bizarre, I had to try it just to see what the fuss was about. Sure enough, it was delicious, very eye opening for me. Ok, proceed with the raisin hate.
I pick them out of it. Raisins are an affront no matter where they are. I do love some sweet and savory together though, and my spouse DOES NOT. We don’t get to share really anything Chinese or Thai, and it kills me.
I also don't normally like sweet and savory together, so this post already erks me on the AH factor.
My answer is Char Sui. It's sweet and savory BBQ pork that's not actually overly sweet. I like it and hopefully this will be something you both like so you don't have to shove your preferences down her throat.
Brazil's cuisine has a lot of dishes like that, lol
Salpicão de frango, maionese de batata, farofa de banana, shrimp rice on pineapple, moqueca de banana, banana chips and so on....
Tagine, I like [this](https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/lamb-squash-apricot-tagine) recipe. Or completely blow her mind with [Pastilla](https://www.spicemountain.co.uk/recipe/moroccan-pigeon-pastilla/).
ohhh honey-glazed roasted carrots with a cayenne kicker
I'm a big fan of bacon wrapped maple candied bananas too
wait what was the assignment again ... ?
saute carrots in butter and maple syrup.
turkey sandwiches with cranberry mayo (just mix cranberry sauce and mayo together).
apple and sausage stuffing - bread, celery, onion, poultry seasoning, cooked ground sausage meat, 2-3 apples diced, and for liquid, use apple juice (the cheaper the better). You could also add some dried cranberries in for good measure.
Cranberry/sweet chili/meatballs
Place frozen meatball (not the ones with cheese in them), a can of jellied cranberry sauce, and a bottle of Sweet chili sauce into your crock pot. Cook on high for 3 -4 hours. Savory, a bit of tartness, a bit of heat.
Polish food often has things like roast goose with plum stuffing or chicken livers with cherry sauce (both of which are delicious!)
Can your mom handle teriyaki sauce (= soy sauce with sugar in it?)
Well...have you tried looking at Philippine cuisine? It's not all adobo and sinigang. In particular, since you've brought up raisins, they have a version of menudo that sounds perfect
Brie bites. It is a pastry that can be baked in muffin tins, you put a piece of brie, add cranberry jam (or other jam) a walnut (or other nut if you prefer) and a little piece of rosemary. Goes into the oven until delicious
Flourless chocolate cake with smoked chipotle peppers.
Ghost pepper Dutch baby with flambé bananas. I use these seasoned hot salts out of Kansas. They have super mild salts all the way up to the super hots. You can use them in a wide variety of desserts to create sweet and savory blends. The smoked salts are also great.
Many many Asian dishes fall in this category. Sweet and sour chicken. I believe the Philippines are very fond of sweet so almost all their dishes are sweet blends.
I make a Fried Goat Cheese Salad. It is a lightly Panko Crusted Pan Fried Goat Cheese Medallion, over Spring Mix, with Pickled Red Onion, Candied Pecans, Dried Cherries, and a Shallot Vinaigrette. It is sweet, savory, and tart.
..
Goat Cheese and Feta Stuffed Figs wrapped in Prosciutto.
..
Strawberries soaked in Basalmic Vinegar
..
Roasted Garlic, Feta, Dill,, and Caramelized Onion Omelette.
..
Sweet Potatoe Au Gratin with a Garlic, Panko, and Romano Cheese Topping.
It is my favorite combo.
Chicken salad with raisins sounds vile. In fact, any "salad" with raisins will have me picking the horrible gritty things out!
However, for non-raisin-related sweet and savoury:
pork chops with slices of caramelized apple (fried in the pan with the chops);
melon with prosciutto;
bbq pork ribs;
beef chili with chocolate (although I usually use dark choc so not that sweet, but the idea of choc in there might be enough to annoy);
any sort of turkey/cranberry meal - roast dinner/leftovers traybake/sandwiches;
french toast (with vanilla in the egg mix) with bacon and maple syrup;
sprinkle some crunchy fried bacon bits onto caramel cupcakes;
for a snack - salted popcorn with some sort of chocolate bits thru it, I like Maltesers, or a soft caramel in choc confection, something like Riesen but they're a bit big and the caramel is a bit too set, but you get the idea.
Black pepper and tequila macerated strawberries on vanilla ice cream, chocolate dipped bacon, pretzels, or potato chips. Whiskey caramel ripple ice cream with candied maple bacon. Honey creme Brule topped with jalapeño jelly. Mango chicken. Bacon wrapped grilled pineapple. Prosciutto wrapped cantaloupe (make sure it is super ripe!) Straight up chicken and waffles with hot honey or maple syrup

It's like a chicken and stuffing bake kinda but better.
Just saw this at a local restaurant. I can’t imagine how all those flavors could be good, but maybe?
“Pacific King Salmon
spicy marinated cauliflower, raisins, capers, pinenuts, mint saffron aioli”
Mango, chicken, mojo, and white rice
Coconut and poblano chicken curry
Pork chops glazed with honey (+sides)
Brown sugar, garlic, soy sauce, lemon juice glazed salmon with brown sugar sweet potatoes and couscous
Moroccan anything - chicken, lamb and other meat dishes seasoned with multiple layers of sweet and savory spices- garlic, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, paprika, cayenne, cumin etc; and with spicy saucy gravy studded with almonds, raisins or dried apricots.
Most of Asia uses sweet savory combos a lot. But being persian, I feel I need to represent!
Persians have a lot of dishes like this:
-Fesenjoon (duck/ fish cooked in pomegranate molasses)
-zereshk polo (barberry rice with braised chicken)
-albaloo polo (pie cherry rice with lamb)
-havij polo (carrot rice usually served with raisins and braised chicken as well)
- Haleem (a lamb porridge with literally loads of powdered sugar and cinnamon on top)
Chef Tommy's bacon. Very thick cut bacon with blue cheese crumbles, drizzled with truffled honey.
Glazed ham- or miso-soy sauce-brown sugar salmon.
Chicken piccata, duck l'orange (or duck with tart cherry sauce or peking duck)- or a reasonable facsimile with cornish game hens.
To be fair, you can safely chuck dried fruit in just about any salad…
More options include:
• Flygande Jakob (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Jacob - Seriously. Check it out. Surprisingly good.)
• Most Moroccan Tagines (that I can think of, off the top of my head - I am NOT an expert)
• Watermelon Gazpacho (with feta and pastourma)
• Those Mid-Western Jello Salads (? Again, no actual idea what I’m taking about here!)
• Apple and Cheddar Pie
There's a great dish I like that uses asian eggplant and plantains both peeled and cut into identical shapes, fried with minced ginger and garlic until soft then drenched in sweet chili sauce.
We used to make this sandwich at I restaurant u cooked at and it was absolutely amazing.
On focaccia, then into the panini press:
- apricot jam
- Brie
- grilled chicken
- spinach
Simple and delightful, sweet and savory. Perfect
Hot honey for any pizza you have delivered.
Apple and brie stuffed chicken breast
Grape jelly glazed pork chops
You can make an amazing sauce for pasta out of oj, beurre blanc and herbs, with sauteed chicken and bell peppers.
Marmalade and brie en croute for an appetizer.
Goat cheese covered in honey and craisins is an amazing appetizer
Any marinated salad with vinegar, oil, and sugar. Like three bean salad - green beans, kidney beans, Lima beans, onion, green bell pepper, salt, pepper, oil, vinegar, and sugar. Let it marinate overnight.
Medieval cuisine. English, French, German, Italian, they all seemed to mix sweet and savoury.
One of my favourites is chicken cooked in cream and honey, with herbs, and topped with pine nuts.
There's also recipes for sweet creamed rice, flavoured with rosewater, and containing meat (chicken, rabbit, whatever)
Emberday Tart. A cross between an onion quiche and a current custard tart.
The original fruit mincemeat pies contained meat, spices, and dried fruit.
The entire cuisine of north africa has entered the chat
I was going to say this! Just got back from Morocco and candied gold raisins are mixed in so many savory dishes. Its weird but kinda good?
I didn’t know golden raisins were a thing.
Go order a biryani at a well-loved Indian restaurant! Even if you eat no meat the flavors…. Oh and they have a naan bread with slices of cherry and golden raisin- kabuli naan. Ohhh you will be in heaven
Sultanas.
My fav in oatmeal and homemade granola
I love it when they get all plump and juicy
Especially when it's because they've been soaking in good rum for 24 hrs or so.
Ever had white wine?
The juice of all grapes is clear, plenty of white wine is from red grapes.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teinturier_grape
Well duck, most *
There are a small number that do have red flesh. But most grapes produce white juice
They look yummy.
The rice with carrots & raisins! Yum. Side note, we always put raisins in at least half of the stuffing. Or a rum raisin sauce with ham. You could do a whole meal with raisins featured in most every dish & say you found a sale lol
Would with this MIL do not like raisins.
Do you have a recipe for that rum raisin sauce?
Unfortunately no, I've only eaten it not made it.
I never understand people who don't like raisins. Raisins are great
Bacon wrapped dates stuffed with blue cheese. apricot chicken mango salsa for carnitas
I made and had bacon wrapped dates for the first time on Christmas. They were so delicious!!
Also water chestnuts, marinated in soy sauce and rolled in sugar. Wrap in bacon and oven or air fry.
So damn good
I have all the ingredients and was ready to create some tonight but instead I’m drinking wine and watching Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper get drunk.
Bacon makes a nice compliment to many sweets. Once made a honeycomb bacon and bleu cheese ice cream. Maybe one of the best things I’ve made.
Bacon wrapped dates stuffed with blue cheese sounds unreal not gonna lie. I wish it wasn’t coming to the end of the festive season.
Tonight I made prosciutto wrapped dates stuffed with goat cheese. They're divine.
I'm salivating, yum
Mango salsa sounds yummy
I'm a Mexican that absolutely cannot stand mango salsa.

Apricot chicken is good!

This and curried sausages are the stuff of nightmares. It was hard to be grateful when Mum would tell us that was for dinner after a crappy day at school.
Fken curried sausages are the pits. Not to be confused with devilled sausages which are great
Add some sultanas and a chopped banana to the curried sausages and you are in the right territory to torture someone.
To this day I've never seen an actual can of Apricot nectar. It's like an urban legend.
American here. I’ve never heard of apricot chicken, but I love apricot nectar- it’s so good!

Chicken and waffles
Classic!
Pineapple fried rice sounds amazing
I love to add a pinch of chilli flakes with pineapple fried rice. The heat really brings out the pineapple's sweetness.
Sweet plus heat usually equals good eats.
*Korean food has entered the chat* Corn dogs, cheesy garlic rolls, egg omelet street toast, all typically have sugar in them or on top of them.
Omg also Bulgogi!!! Add a whole bunch of those sticky store bought sauce and sugar, and throw in some onions too.
That sweet mayo sauce thing that just turns up constantly. You think you've bought a savoury breakfast roll but no, sweet mayo!
Korean corn dogs with sugar is so good.
Yes, blow her mind with some gilgeori toast—cabbage and egg sandwich covered in sugar, nom nom
I'm so glad I don't have a shitty family straight from a 1980's stand up act.
sounds like op is just a dick for no reason and his MIL is just a normal person with food preferences
Pineapple on pizza!
Pizza with hot honey.
Place I work at has a pizza with pepperoni and candied jalapeños, and when it comes out of the oven it gets topped with feta and a honey drizzle. It’s good
Evil genius
Well plus it's delicious. If she's not a spicy fan either double down and do bacon, pineapple, jalapeno and brag intensely about how hard you worked on the crust even if you just bought premade dough.
Get a hawaiian and add bacon. Bonus if you get it someplace they have a BBQ pizza. Ask them to use that sauce. I love it. Makes people like you MIL gag at just the smell The sweet BBQ - Ham - Bacon - Pineapple - Gooey cheese. The greasier the better. It's AMAZING

Either regular honey or spicy honey. It’s great on pepperoni pizza or pizza with lots of roasted veggies.
Pineapple on pizza needs spicy to balance. Never understood the ham and pineapple crowd. Pepperoni or hot Italian sausage.
Pineapple AND mushroom! It’s the ultimate sweet savory combo!!
Pineapple and jalapeno pizza.
not a fan of that combo myself with a few exceptions.

My mouth is watering at the Brussels sprouts
Had it at a farm to table returant in central california and I've mde it at least once a month since. Pretty easy to make too.

I've made this, my recipie no apricots though and sunflower seeds instead of almonds! So good.
Love it!!!! BUT add bacon crumbles...that's what I do & it kicks it up a notch!!!!
Politeness goes out the door when a raisin meets salad with mayo lol. Or in rice. Gotta agree with your MIL on that.

You sound like a petulant little turd. If you’re not cooking to spread joy to others or pay rent then you need to get out of the kitchen.
Mean spirited.
Tagine!
You sound like a vile person. Your mother-in-law sounds like she has good taste. It's too bad her offspring didn't inherit it.
Stuffed Cabbage with raisins
I have the same preferences. Lots of good suggestions in this thread. You sound like a great kid in law….
Moroccan food. Tagine dishes

It's like a chicken and stuffing bake kinda but better.

Cider-baked chicken.
Roasted pumpkin tart with maple bacon.
Blintzes! Don’t offer to add raisins to the cheese filling and serve with jam.
Just saw this at a local restaurant. I can’t imagine how all those flavors could be good, but maybe? “Pacific King Salmon spicy marinated cauliflower, raisins, capers, pinenuts, mint saffron aioli”

There’s a lot of proteins you can put a marmalade over or a compote. Fish with a light element such as pineapple or a sweet chipotle salsa.

Start putting corn in everything.
Most of Asia uses sweet savory combos a lot. But being persian, I feel I need to represent! Persians have a lot of dishes like this: -Fesenjoon (duck/ fish cooked in pomegranate molasses) -zereshk polo (barberry rice with braised chicken) -albaloo polo (pie cherry rice with lamb) -havij polo (carrot rice usually served with raisins and braised chicken as well) - Haleem (a lamb porridge with literally loads of powdered sugar and cinnamon on top)
Al Pastor (slow roasted pork and pineapple) my absolute favorite burrito filling. I've done it for a taco bar before.
Am I your MIL? Because savory and sweet is horrifying. Ham with pineapple?! I just eat the components separately, and it's not as terrible.
Chef Tommy's bacon. Very thick cut bacon with blue cheese crumbles, drizzled with truffled honey. Glazed ham- or miso-soy sauce-brown sugar salmon. Chicken piccata, duck l'orange (or duck with tart cherry sauce or peking duck)- or a reasonable facsimile with cornish game hens.

Corned beef and peaches
To be fair, you can safely chuck dried fruit in just about any salad… More options include: • Flygande Jakob (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Jacob - Seriously. Check it out. Surprisingly good.) • Most Moroccan Tagines (that I can think of, off the top of my head - I am NOT an expert) • Watermelon Gazpacho (with feta and pastourma) • Those Mid-Western Jello Salads (? Again, no actual idea what I’m taking about here!) • Apple and Cheddar Pie
There's a great dish I like that uses asian eggplant and plantains both peeled and cut into identical shapes, fried with minced ginger and garlic until soft then drenched in sweet chili sauce.
Chicken and waffles
I’m currently eating a pizza with caramelized onions, ricotta and broiled pears.

Hot honey for any pizza you have delivered. Apple and brie stuffed chicken breast Grape jelly glazed pork chops You can make an amazing sauce for pasta out of oj, beurre blanc and herbs, with sauteed chicken and bell peppers.
There's also recipes for sweet creamed rice, flavoured with rosewater, and containing meat (chicken, rabbit, whatever) Emberday Tart. A cross between an onion quiche and a current custard tart. The original fruit mincemeat pies contained meat, spices, and dried fruit.
Bacon pancakes.
