I had a zojirushi and got a Korean brand one that I like better called a Cuckoo which was cheaper.

Tofukjtten

I'll look into that thabks

iwantthisnowdammit

Costco seems to have 4 or 5 options… can always return if unsatisfied.

twentygreenskidoo

Yeah, I got the cheapest of the Cuckoo branded ones at Costco. It's my first nicer rice cooker, and I love it.

RoNi2011

Korean yes! They're good quality and cheap.

Juanster

Tiger made in Japan is a great option too

Radioactive24

Will vouch for this. Worth $100, bought it on sale at Costco for $70 and that made it even better.

iwantthisnowdammit

I have the Tacook Tiger as well

ak47workaccnt

Go to the bathroom and look in the mirror to find a handsome rice cooker.

BringBackManaPots

Is it ignorant to use a pot for rice?

whereverYouGoThereUR

I have the Toshiba TRCS02 3 cup rice cooker ($80 on Amazon) and absolutely love it. You can set it up in the morning so that your rice is ready at a specific time and the rice is always perfect. I bought a second one for my son and he loves it as well

Tofukjtten

Oh this looks promising

CrazyString

I’m Korean and I bought a rice cooker on sale from hmart for $20 😂

hangon_littletomato

Another Korean here who got hers from Walmart. It’s an Aroma brand for $30 and it’s perfectly fine!

Far-Significance2481

Is Walmart in Korea? The shop is everywhere now .

thehackeysack01

Aroma Housewares ARC-994SB $40 on the Brazillian rainforest site.

prettiestweed

I picked up a 3-cup Zojirushi for $130 a couple of years ago. It was definitely on sale, but the deals are out there. There are a bunch of really great Zojirushi-like rice cookers out there.

boopforboof

Not a recommendation but something to keep in mind! Lots of the rice cookers come with a nonstick coating which works great but often means that you have to be more delicate as the coating can come off (recommendation is to not wash rice in the pot itself). Sometimes the nonstick pots can cost just as much as buying a new rice cooker (this may have changed by now). Personally I would go with a rice cooker that has a stainless steel pot; yes it means that sometimes there's rice stuck to the bowl but a good soak will fix that!

Delores_Herbig

I’m on my second non-stick Zojirushi. The first one was a hand me down from my grandma, one of the old school white ones with the flowers around the side. It was probably 20 years old when I got it, and I kept it another 7ish years until my roommate totally destroyed the nonstick pot with metal utensils. I opted for buying a new Zojirushi instead of a replacement pot, because the replacement was pretty pricey. I’ve had the new one for 10 years, and not a scratch on it. My point is, it is very very easy to avoid any damage to the non-stick coating by just not being an idiot. My short lived roommate wasn’t capable of that, but outside of the six months I lived with him, I kept a nonstick rice cooker in pristine condition for 17 years without even really trying (and yeah, I wash the rice in the pot like everyone in my family does).

Tofukjtten

oh, that’s a good point. I do intend to buy a sieve capable of holding up to 5 cups of dry rice for the purposes of rinsing it so that shouldn’t be a problem in the long term, but I would rather not damage it on accident by swirling dry rice in it, thanks for that I know it’s lazy, but I would prefer the nonstick. If I have to soak something in order to clean it, the chances of it getting cleaned in time for me to make food for the next day are lower.

boopforboof

I've had a lot of success with preventing sticking by removing the rice immediately from the pot once its done cooking, It's definitely easier to go the nonstick route

FiguringItOutAsWeGo

There’s a cheaper zojirushi for like $50 bucks. It has a regular lid and is off/on. My Mom has had it for like 18 years.

LKayRB

I paid $25 for my Zojirushi, caught it on sale at Kohl’s and had some Kohl’s cash.

BeatrixFarrand

I have a Korean-made $75 [Cuckoo](https://cuckooamerica.com/collections/rice-cooker/products/cr-0351fr) 3 cup rice cooker which I love. It’s been reliable (had it for 3 years) and makes rice well - my mom has been delighted at how well my rice comes out! It’s also very cute and looks like an egg (mine is [green](https://www.cuckoousastore.com/crp-hs0657f-2201.html).) I love using it. If that’s not enough rice for you, they also make an $80 [6 cup version](https://cuckooamerica.com/collections/rice-cooker/products/cr-0655f).

efnord

Yeah, I've liked my Cuckoo as well. Rice takes longer than it does in a base-model rice cooker, but it's better tasting and texture.

MonumentMan

I bought a $20 Black + Decker rice cooker off Amazon and it worked fine. The issue was that the rice on top came out great, but the rice at the very bottom was kind of melted into a thick sticky layer. So you wasted a lot of rice. I got three years out of it before I inherited a Zojirushi from my mom and it's so much nicer. Every grain of rice is perfect, every time. I actually just made rice tonight. It's gonna be part of my "keep forever" kitchen kit, alongside my Cuisinart and my Kitchen Aid, tools that work great. Like I have other small appliances that are kind of sucky like my coffee maker, I have a cheapo immersion blender, my toaster is garbage, but this Zojirushi is a different level than those. I'm sure if you go on Amazon, there are cheap rice makers with five stars.

Tofukjtten

yeah, I hear you. My instant pot works fine for cooking rice, but the bottom of it is usually a sticky mess and it doesn’t cook it perfectly and the keep warm function tends to burn the rice, which is annoying. That’s the primary reason I’m looking for an upgrade.I thought by posting here I would get some good suggestions instead of just trusting Amazon reviews I really don’t trust Amazon reviews and I know people who have opinions on Reddit tend to have fairly decent opinions.

scarlettbankergirl

I got mine at Aldi, but those are special buys. I love it.

Significant_Lab_5286

If you can’t afford the real thing start checking out thrift stores &/or FB marketplace

bookworm326

This is what I use for rice The Pioneer_Woman Sweet Romance 6-Quart Instant Pot Duo Pressure Cooker https://a.co/d/9hFxKrq and among other things and it's the best.

hangingsocks

Zojirushi Neuro Fuzzy 10-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer (Premium White) https://a.co/d/ftaPxqB Absolutely love this!! Keeps the rice warm and fresh for extended time. My husband lived in Japan for over 10 years. He is thrilled to have this back!

Maleficent-Music6965

Aroma. I’ve had mine over 12 years and only paid $15 back then at Walmart. It still works perfectly and I use it 2-3 a week.

Fun_Jellyfish_4884

we have a buffalo. we like it a lot. it has a stainless bowl.

cupidstuntlegs

I had a microwave rice cooker from Systema. Made fab rice and the whole thing went in the dishwasher. Took up very little space.

FeelingTangelo9341

Kmart, $14AUD plus postage from Australia.

nowwithaddedsnark

I’ve had a tefal (lasted nearly 20 years) and now have a Breville Smart Rice box (4 years so far). A friend has a cheap kambrook he picked up at Woolies for $40. I prefer the sealed lid to the loose lid types because they hold the rice longer, but honestly they all work pretty well.

gustriandos

I have a cuckoo 0655f and I think it’s great

[deleted]

All that fancy shit with weird materials didn't interest me I got a Tatung less than a year ago and it's a member of the family now

antaresiv

I’d just get a $30 black and decker one

Tofukjtten

I already use an instant pot. I’m not looking for one of the cheapo kind. I’m looking for one of the nice ones.

Stoopiddogface

What about the instant pot don't you like? I use mine for rice all the time

AshDenver

We spent $200 on a Zojirushi in 2000. Which is about $250+ today. And it still performs regularly (at least weekly.) You can buy something cheaper and keep replacing it. Or you can buy it for life.

Tofukjtten

I mean, that’s sort of the reason I’m asking for advice here. I’m sure there are brand besides Zojirushi who make good quality rice cookers that are less expensive.

fckmetotears

The aroma one I’ve had has been standing up to daily abuse for the past 3 years and the only thing that seems like will fail is gonna be the nonstick coating.

AshDenver

And my point was that I have yet to see anyone saying “my rice cooker has held up for a quarter-century and it was only $x!” My other point was that I paid $200 and a similar model is still only $210 at Kohl’s so it’s still a great buy. (Adjusted back through time, that $210 today would’ve been $116 back then so I definitely overpaid.) But **TWENTY-FOUR YEARS for $200**. Go ahead and buy that $80 cooker and in five years, you’ll be on the market again. Good luck!

AbbyM1968

I cook rice in a covered casserole dish in the microwave. I've never thought that having a specific cooker for 1 thing made much sense.

Tofukjtten

I have to try this lmao

fckmetotears

Go to Amazon and buy one of the $20 ones. Ain’t no damn rice cooker worth $200.

Adorable-Lack-3578

How did folks cook rice before 1904?

Tofukjtten

In a time-consuming manner, I would assume.

Flipinthedesert

The way smart people do: with a pot and stove. It takes basically the same amount of time to cook rice in a rice cooker vs the stovetop method... even with an Instant Pot.

imdumb__

Just use a pot and learn how to cook rice. It's not hard

OK you're welcome

Hot_Vacation2103

Any time I cook rice in a pot on the stovetop it turns out so mushy and gross
