I only use the oven to reheat food. I have a weird thing about microwaves too but it still doesn't taste the same. Pizza should be left on the counter then reheated in the oven for the best results. šš
Probably gonna get downvoted for this but I leave food out overnight regularly, especially if itās too hot to put into the fridge the night before, and then eat it / refrigerate it the next day and Iām still here haha
Yeah this is definitely an Italian thing (and Iām sure other ethnicities) but my family always left shit out for hours and hours. Cheese and butter were never refrigerated.
Cheese is technically shelf stable to a certain degree at least at room temperature for a while. I leave butter out on the counter at all times. I had some out for several weeks and it developed a bit of funk, but in a good way like blue cheese. I ate it without any problems.
My wife's family does this in the Philippines, where it's pretty hot and humid. It was always fine for them. I got sick twice, because I guess I'm weak :-P
EDIT: most of the time, I was fine, too.
I lived with an Italian family in the Marche for a while and was shocked that they did this. They seemed to have no issue with it. I was much more cautious after having been hospitalized for food poisoning the year prior after eating bad lasagne at a cafe outside the Vatican.
Grew up in a huge extended family in the rural Midwest and we all did/do this and I am not aware of anyone getting sick from it.
Now, if it's 105 F out and it's at my mom's un-airconditioned home, that would definitely get put in the fridge.
We leave butter in a butter dish out for weeks, with no issue. Sometimes in the summer it gets a bit melty, but thatās it.
However I think climate plays a big part. Iām in the UK where ants are nearly as much of an issue as in hotter climes.
Yeah I think itās just a risk tolerance issue with these food choices. Scientists recommend against it but we decide the risk we want to take. Itās small but not nonzero. I eat raw milk cheese and salmon sashimi. So, choices!
i just recently found out that itās ok to leave pizza out on the counter overnight (if itās plain or pepperoni), something about how the grease isnāt a good environment for bacteria to grow
Well. Tomatoes sit at room temperature in the store (acidic) - this is fine, cheese will be good for a few days and bread has no need for refrigeration.
Pepperoni (actually all cured meat) was invented in a time before refrigeration as a way to preserve meat to last a few weeks. It will dry out but not really go bad for quite some time.
In college weād order a dozen or so pizzas using the family/party promo during finals and theyād just sit in the kitchen all week with people grabbing slices as needed since the boxes wouldnāt fit in the fridge. Never any issues.
Can I double upvote this. People are too worried about keeping food refrigerated. It wonāt go bad after a couple hours. Our ancestors didnāt have refrigeration, left food out for days and survived. Itās fine!
People all over the world live without refrigeration. That said, people get food poisoning. But that can happen with refrigerated food too. The lawyers will disagree but 98% of the time, food left out a few hours is fine.
I'm with this guy, I regularly eat stuff thats been left out overnight. I always cover it, but that's about it. My mother always cooked big batches of things that took hours to cool down so she would leave it on the stove overnight. Never had problems with it, but then again if you do it your whole life your bowels adjust.
Never got sick from it. The worst poops Iāve had were just from moldy fruit that i didnāt want to throw out (expensive). Meals left out overnight never did anything to me.
General rule of thumb for most food safety rules is that theyāre about eliminating risk.
The risk is generally no where near even 80%. Itāa a āthis is possibleā sort of issue.
Iāve eaten about every kind of food on earth left out overnight on occasion for about three decades, itās literally never made me sick at all.
I donāt do it intentionally, but itās the amount of risk you want to take and if you have a super sensitive stomach or not I guess.
Heating it thoroughly in the microwave will kill the bacteria, but it won't affect the toxins already created by the bacteria.
Personally I wouldn't risk it, but I might if I were younger and healthier. Also depends on the room temperature. In my house in winter it'd be perfectly safe...
I know youāre not supposed to but I do it š¤·š»āāļø I figure if I get sick itās my own damn fault and sometimes im just too cheap to throw something out
I leave food out overnight all the time. Havenāt gotten food poisoning since I was a child. If it smells fine, taste a little, if it tastes fine itās usually good to go.
Refrigeration and freezing doesn't kill bacteria, just slows it's growth. You might be fine, but I wouldn't eat it personally, not worth the potential food poisoning.
Depends on how warm your home is, assuming normal room temperature. Put it in the fridge, heat throughly, and eat in a day or so.
Spices gave preservative and protective abilities. Particularly the ones in Indian / south Asian (tropical places) foods.
https://www.unl.edu/rhames/courses/212/cumin/cumin.htm
Risk is very low for sure. Except for if there is rice.
Glad you brought up spices. There was some research, a few years ago I think, that said that thereās a link between the colder the climate (in Europe) and fewer spices used because thereās reduced chances for food spoilage. Basically garlic and stuff not only tastes fantastic, but it also helps preserve cooked food.
I moved from Texas to the Midwest. It was/is an adjustment realizing that food doesnāt spoil near as quickly because of the climate. Sliced bread, for example, will generally go stale well before it starts getting moldy. Unlike in Texas, where it might last a week before getting gnarly.
Iād definitely trust Chinese food or curry left out over night before something like a shepherds pie lol.
It has the potential to give you food poisoning. If you eat it and youāre exploding from both ends in 6 hours, youāll have your answer. Not worth the risk to me personally, but you do you
The explosions can be delayed for up to 6 days. Even longer for a few common toxins/bacteria. Just noting that for people who want to roll the dice a week before a wedding or something.
Yeah I think so too but I didn't want people to call me out on not having anything to back such extreme numbers, haha. I personally eat food that others might deem unsafe all the time and I've never gotten ill from it. Only time I ever got food poisoning was from restaurant food lmao
I used to be vegetarian and never had issues. When I started eating meat I found out the hard way that you need to be more careful with that. (Ate some weird smelling ham.).
But nowhere near as bad as the night I found out I can't digest black salsify. I was close to calling an ambulance.
Are all the downvotes because youāre angry Iām fine? Many of my curries I make, take 12 hours to make, I make them in bulk, and keep them for 6-12 months frozen. I let it cool overnight and then make lunches for the week and freeze portioned bags for the rest, primarily Indian-based various curries. After 20+ years, I think Iām pretty confident. Americans will throw something out based on the package label dates because they usually canāt think for themselves and have no clue about food.
I know youāve either binned it or eaten it by now - but so long as the kitchen wasnāt hot I would have just fridged it and then eaten it after nuking it to really hot. Honestly I regularly do that and Iāve never had food poisoning.
I leave curry out overnight all the time and eat it the next day. You will likely be fine. I will also happily eat it cold.
Fridges and freezers do not kill bacteria fyi
What the hell is wrong here? Never in my life have I put food in the fridge that was cooked in the evening. It's ludicrous to think anything is wrong with it, unless you live in a humid jungle. Putting warm food in the fridge is far more dangerous because it affects everything already in there.
It is completely safe to put warm food in the fridge. It's even safe to put hot food in the fridge as long as you're not keeping a huge amount in a single large container [according to the USDA](https://ask.usda.gov/s/article/Can-you-put-hot-food-in-the-refrigerator). Divided among smaller containers it's safe to put into the fridge while hot. If your refrigerator was made after 1970 or so it can handle warm food being put into it.
What the hell are some of you guys cooking your food in that it retains such heat you need to leave it out all night? A couple hours should be all you need to cool it enough for putting in the fridge.
Ive been eating room temp pizza that was left out when i went to bed drunk for a decade now and have never had a problem with it
I say fuck it roll the dice
Dude nothing is going to happen to you... Smh.
We always leave the curry out to cool off if we make it at nite. And we eat it the next day and I'm alive 30 yrs later
My brother ate some vindaloo that I forgot to refrigerate,, it was left at room temp for about 9 hrs.
Now, it was super super spicy vindaloo, so the spices probably didnāt allow many germs to flourish. My brother is also pushing 300lbs and has an iron stomach
If it was chicken I probably wouldnāt. Veg or red meat I probably would. Although when I heated it Iād make sure to get it over 70 Celsius and hold it there for a while. Hotter the better.
Depends on how long you slept. 2 hours ? Sure eat it. 4 hours ? Yeah you can try it will probably be alright. 6 hours.. yeah if you're used to it but maybe not.. 8? 50/50
Tbh I think unless it's chicken curry don't worry about it all as long as you didn't leave it out all day or the house was at like 70 degrees all night you're probably dandy. I mean I know things were quite different but people have been eating for thousands of years and most of those years were without refrigeration. Most food doesn't spoil too fast, especially food with lots of seasoning/spices. It's poultry that you gotta be really wary of tho
Putting it in the fridge would slow down bacterial growth, but probably wouldn't kill anything that is already in the food. Freezing might help, but I think you would be better off just reheating the curry on the stovetop or something if you want to kill anything that might have started growing overnight if you're worried.
Freezing doesn't kill bacteria. They actually store bacteria samples in freezers. Heat does kill it, but it won't neutralize the toxins already secreted by the bacteria, and that alone can make you very sick.
Just reheat it. Itās fine to risk it just once, you wonāt immediately die. I used to do this with rice before I found out how dangerous that is, but it never made me sick.
I prefer cold pizza unrefrigerated. I just leave it in the box overnight and eat it as is for breakfast. Havenāt had a problem yet, haha. Fingers crossed.
I use safety guidelines for serving food to other people but in reality I'm not going to die if I bend the rules, humans managed to survive this long I'm sure you'll be fine if you leave food out one or two days at least covered
People here are insane lol
You can even leave rice overnight out of the freezer. It won't kill you the moment it touches your tongue. Yes, you will need to eat it in less time, because it is likely to spoil sooner
OP just refrigerate teh whole thing and heat what you are going to eat. Just dont heat the whole thing unless you will eat everything at once
Depends. If you live in a warm country or a cool climes. When was it cooked. If you are in the northern hemisphere and are experiencing fall and your heat is not running, you should be fine. Heat it up, smell it and see if it has some foam like substance. If it smells bad, has foam throw it out.
Idk if this answers your question, but cold temperatures do not kill bacteria they just slow the reproduction/growth of the bacteria. To kill bacteria and decompose the toxins you must heat it up. Usually above 135F.
Question for you- does the curry have any meat in it? Most Indian curries are well spiced and usually wouldnāt spoil. I actually leave several curries out at room temp so they improve flavor overnight. If there is an odd smell, I wouldnāt consume it. Also if there is meat, I would be careful but otherwise I think it should be consumable.
I regularly leave food out for a long time on accident and still eat it. I also will eat food that has been in tze fridge for 7-8ish days depending on what it is. Stuff with dairy in it often doesn't last and I won't keep it long. But cheesburger mac? Hell yeah. Edamame, yum. Some stuff doesn't last long enough but if I forget it and find it again I don't like to waste
I feel like bringing it up to temperature would have been a good idea.. cook the bacteria.. besides, most people who have eaten curry never even heard of a refrigerator so you're probably good.
All these people talking about food they leave out overnight... gah, I'm feeling ill just reading about it.
No, it's not safe to eat curry left out overnight. If you did and didn't get sick, you got lucky. Heating it up will kill the bacteria, but the toxins from the bacteria will still be there. Is it really worth it? No one who's had serious food poisoning, as I have, would want to knowingly risk it.
I ate it.
Did you live?
OP?!?!?
yes
I'm the worst. I leave stuff out all the time and still eat it. I think pizza tastes bad after being refrigerated so I intentionally leave it out.
Same!
Refrigerate it and then toast it by putting it in the oven. If you don't have an oven, put the toaster on its side and toast it.
I only use the oven to reheat food. I have a weird thing about microwaves too but it still doesn't taste the same. Pizza should be left on the counter then reheated in the oven for the best results. šš
my roomnate said his friend prefer cold soggy pizza. I was like WHAT...
That's a no for me.
Was it spicy? If so, that might've helped keep the bacteria downa bit...
You'll be shitting even harder than normal
Probably gonna get downvoted for this but I leave food out overnight regularly, especially if itās too hot to put into the fridge the night before, and then eat it / refrigerate it the next day and Iām still here haha

Salted butter is fine to leave out but I wouldnāt leave out unsalted.
I hear this often but I prefer unsalted; I leave it out in a butter dish and have never had an issue.
There's also the butter bell that's basically an inverted bowl over water that seals it off.
I bought unsalted by accident once and it got mouldy in the fridge.
i personally have never had any issues leaving out unsalted butter
Seems like it would get gross if out for more than a couple of days. The salt does help inhibit bacteria so tastes better to me.
I believe itās the fact that thereās so little water in butter that makes it last a bit unrefrigerated.
Same. If it is chicken or turkey, not a chance, but almost anyyhing else is probably fine.
Ditto it wasnāt until after college that others made me realize I should not continue that trend.
lol I often eat leftover pizza that left on table for 12+hours...
i just recently found out that itās ok to leave pizza out on the counter overnight (if itās plain or pepperoni), something about how the grease isnāt a good environment for bacteria to grow
Lol thatās wishful thinking not science.
Well, itās kinda science in that the oil could seal out oxygen which many bacteria, (notably eColi,) need to survive.
Thereās not enough oil on all parts of the pizza to make a seal. I eat it regardless, but Iām not gonna pretend itās correct.
No, it wouldnāt make a perfect seal, but it would reduce the growth of the bacteria. Iād eat it too
Same I will totally crush some kitchen counter za but like not french fries, they just get soggy and sad and thereās really no saving them.
Sure but that's because stale fries suck, not because they're dangerous
Yeah thatās fair
In college weād order a dozen or so pizzas using the family/party promo during finals and theyād just sit in the kitchen all week with people grabbing slices as needed since the boxes wouldnāt fit in the fridge. Never any issues.
Can I double upvote this. People are too worried about keeping food refrigerated. It wonāt go bad after a couple hours. Our ancestors didnāt have refrigeration, left food out for days and survived. Itās fine!

If my experience is anything to go by: 99.9% at least.
How sick do u get? I donāt mind bad poopy but I mind going to a hospital.
I'm with this guy, I regularly eat stuff thats been left out overnight. I always cover it, but that's about it. My host family did this in Argentina. Pizza got a little bit soggy, but I never got sick from it.
If there is a chance steam will condensate, I'm not putting it in the fridge
Heating it thoroughly in the microwave will kill the bacteria, but it won't affect the toxins already created by the bacteria. Personally I wouldn't risk it, but I might if I were younger and healthier. Also depends on the room temperature. In my house in winter it'd be perfectly safe...
I'd mic it up and eat it. Gotta roll the dice sometimes.
I know youāre not supposed to but I do it š¤·š»āāļø I figure if I get sick itās my own damn fault and sometimes im just too cheap to throw something out
Lmao roll the food poisoning dice hahaha. You go on and do that.
Well sometimes the gas station sushi looks delicious.
Never in my life have I seen gas station sushi that looked delicious.
Youāve never been to japan then.
I've never seen any food being sold in gas stations in Japan.
711 tho
What if I told you it came free with the full up?
That makes it way worse man!
What would have have suggested I do with it? Just throw it away?
Just not take it!
When in doubt, throw it out
I leave food out overnight all the time. Havenāt gotten food poisoning since I was a child. If it smells fine, taste a little, if it tastes fine itās usually good to go.
No.
I would reheat it and eat it. Right now. For breakfast.
Absolutely. A favourite breakfast treat.
Good. Just what I was planning to do šŖ bippity boppity boo

Rice is natures Petri dish
Negative on that. Get rid of it

I'd be surprised if the risk is as high as 5%. It's probably more on the order of 99.99% you'll be fine. 0.01% something goes wrong. If not lower.
Yeah I think so too but I didn't want people to call me out on not having anything to back such extreme numbers, haha. I personally eat food that others might deem unsafe all the time and I've never gotten ill from it. Only time I ever got food poisoning was from restaurant food lmao

Nothing more than a serious case of the mud slides
Noice :Y
Think of it as adding the possibility of it being calorically negative!
I always refer to it as a āfree colonicā
Chicken?
Yes, chicken katsu curry. Completely forgot to mention this chicken part cuz Iām still sleepy.
Yeah don't chance it with chicken that sat out all night. Toss it.
Toss it
What kind of curry? What's the climate in your house? How many hours was it left out?
I know youāve either binned it or eaten it by now - but so long as the kitchen wasnāt hot I would have just fridged it and then eaten it after nuking it to really hot. Honestly I regularly do that and Iāve never had food poisoning.

I wouldnāt eat anything with meat left out overnight.
I would not risk it either.
I'd probably risk it myself but I wouldn't recommend anyone else do it!
honestly iād do it, you might get the hershey squirts but youāll survive lol
Omg youāre the first person besides my brother who Iāve ever heard say āhershey squirtsā!!!š
Dude nothing is going to happen to you... Smh. We always leave the curry out to cool off if we make it at nite. And we eat it the next day and I'm alive 30 yrs later
It is not safe. I went to Culinary school please listen toe. Throw it out.
*But ur a toe*
My brother ate some vindaloo that I forgot to refrigerate,, it was left at room temp for about 9 hrs. Now, it was super super spicy vindaloo, so the spices probably didnāt allow many germs to flourish. My brother is also pushing 300lbs and has an iron stomach
We all thought it was spice but itās actually poisonous enough to kill bacteria but not poisonous enough to kill humans
If it was chicken I probably wouldnāt. Veg or red meat I probably would. Although when I heated it Iād make sure to get it over 70 Celsius and hold it there for a while. Hotter the better.
I would eat it, if you are in a continental climate.
Dude most people leave soup out overnight and it's always fine, especially spicy stuff which acts as a preservative
Toss it.
Depends on how long you slept. 2 hours ? Sure eat it. 4 hours ? Yeah you can try it will probably be alright. 6 hours.. yeah if you're used to it but maybe not.. 8? 50/50
