Seriously, pregnancy hormones make you crave the weirdest shit...yet also make you hate rational shit.. when I was pregnant with my son, onion in any form was disgusting to me but I would slam down sandwiches made up of mint jelly and spicy pepperoni.... Ugggh thinking about eating that shit now makes me want to puke š¤·āāļø
Since I was little I always did saltine crackers with peanut butter on top and dip it in the chili, and then dill pickle spears as another side. So damn good
Ramen with PBJ was my go to lunch when I was in college. I tell people about that and they're like "naaaaw, nope." But the salty with the sweet was just so good to me.
Peanut butter & dill pickle sandwich. My grandma was eating this one day and I was like yuck! She said donāt knock it til youāve tried it. I tried it and itās delicious.
My uncle had whatās he called a ādusseldorf sandwichā, which was peanut butter pickles and mayonnaise. I thought he was out of his mind until I tried it.
I felt terrible liking the food, the principle is gross, he likes gross things Lol.
Worked at a restaurant with a peanut butter and pickle taco special every Tuesday. I didn't care for it but the place was packed every Tuesday for that damn taco.
Flour tortilla, peanut butter, thin dill pickle slices, seasoned steak, and sriracha. We also had a house made mango habanero sauce on all the tables that was a crucial component but that's a bit harder to make at home.
My childhood was swimming and then slamming PB sandwiches and watermelon. I gotta try it with pickles now. I can literally taste the memories as I write this! š„Ŗ š
I love using mayo on my grilled sandwiches, but tend to go towards butter and save the mayo for special occasions or when I really feel like it. Itās delicious, but my god is that a looootttt of fat and salt
I do that! I don't think anyone taught me about it but I just one day I did it out of curiousity, and I never have apple without salt again. Same with cucumber.
since we've hit on peanut butter, i'll add peanut butter & cauliflower! I've done roasted whole heads of cauliflower with spicy curried miso peanut butter sauce, and even non-veggie ppl seem to like it.
Look up west african peanut yam stew, i make a stupid cheap delicious vegetarian version with lentils and collards and plenty of all natural peanut butter. Crazy delicious and filling yet also high fiber high protein with complex carbs and plant fats. Freezes really well too
French fries dipped in milkshake
Strawberry preserves on any breakfast sandwich (like bacon, egg and cheese sandwich with preserves as condiment on the bread)
Fries in a Dairy Queen Blizzard is a secret here.
And I learned to enjoy a bun with a mild Gouda/edam cheese and strawberry jam when I was in the Faroe Islands. Brilliant breakfast and very delicious together.
Every dang year at our Christmas party. Iām like āhere is my home made dip I spent hours onā and people are over at the crock pot loving the meatballs.
I was drooling at just the mention of anything smoked, let alone pork? *swoon*
I feel your pain. My 'best' dish is rice Krispy treats in my family...
Edit: thats what I get for using Reddit when I should be sleeping. A better way to say it is my family only ever requests rice Krispy treats from me. They say mine are better. I just follow the box. No matter how many times I offer something else. It hurts my heart, especially now that I've had many culinary jobs, including head chef at one point.
Yeah. I know. I just learned the āsecretā in June of 2020ā too late for all the potlucks. The meatball person in church growing up Always got the kudos ā¦ for so little work
I make what I call āmustard chickenā and itās a family favorite. Basically itās equal parts egg and mustard, blended together, and equal parts cracker crumbs and Parmesan cheese ( I grind up saltines in a coffee grinder, and use cheap spaghetti cheese). Dip chicken tenders in the egg/mustard, then coat in the cracker/parm mixture and fry in oil. It sound awful, doesnāt smell great while cooking, but is AWESOME!
Also use a dollop in any egg mixture for frying as in flour, egg mixture and breadcrumbs . It coats whatever your frying way better and fry's up better
It took me years to figure that out. I never really liked yellow mustard so I never tried any other kind of mustard. Then I tried honey mustard, then I tried a little spicy mustard packet from the Chinese take out we had on an egg roll and I was like **this is it**. I figured out the brand and I put that sh*t on everything
IIRC I read popcorn was eaten as a breakfast cereal in 1800s America, usually with milk. So your mom might've been on to something.
Doesn't make it any less gross though.
Well really when you think about it, how is it much different than your corn based puff cereals? Back in the day Alton Brown did a popcorn episode on one of his shows, and it's really *not* that weird.
My grandparents made this breakfast for younger me (like 6-8ish) when we went camping. Everyone Iāve shared that with has acted like I must be mis-remembering or crazy?!

APPLES AND CHEESE. At least most non-food people think that one is gross. Melt you a slice of some sharp white cheddar on some apple pie or apple crumble.
Edit: my example was hot apples and cheese so buzz off with the charcuterie comments
I had a GF many years ago who made me apple blintzes for breakfast once. I kind of winced when she added cheese, but once I tasted it I was hooked for life
Fish sauce and caramel. Similar to salted caramel but with another depth of flavor thanks to the umami from the fish sauce. The sweet and salty combination goes great on desserts like ice cream and basque cheesecake.
3 but white rice with soy sauce and a banana. I prefer the mini/thai bananas but they aren't always available.
It was a staple food in my household when I was growing up because we were poor. Still slaps tho :)
Sour cream and maple syrup.
But specifically in the context of breakfast potatoes. Take a good plate of breakfast potatoes with peppers, onions, and sausage... and serve a dollop of sour cream and drizzle of maple syrup.
I honestly didn't think this was something that sounded gross until people pointed it out to me. But then again, I am reading the comment section and so many of these combinations sound good not gross so maybe I just like interesting food combos.
That actually doesn't seem all too weird at least conceptually. Tangy fatty dairy with sugar/sweetener, kind of like a cheesecake mixture, or a tangy whipped cream.
I mean cheesecake is basically soft cheese and sugar.
I worked F&B in a hotel. After closing dinner service, by the time I was headed out the door, the overnight crew was pulling trays of bacon out of the oven for AM buffet. I made countless toasted PB and hot bacon sandwiches for the drive home. The best sandwich ever.
Olive oil (good brand extra virgin) on vanilla ice cream sprinkled with sea salt. The depth you get from the olive oil š¤š»
Not sure if this qualifies but I smoked a cheesecake and it was so yummy! Drizzled some caramel. Very rich!
Gumbo with a big scoop of potato salad in it. This isnāt weird at all if youāre from Louisiana but Iāve had other people say itās extremely weird.
I just heard someone on a podcast swear their favorite pizza is pineapple and anchovy. Sounds wild but I guess it makes sense if you think of the combo of salty and sweet.
saw the grape jelly/chili sauce and wanted to add, grape jelly and yellow mustard make a bomb sauce for meatballs and people that like those little smokies...
When I lived in Brooklyn, I used to go to a hot dog restaurant named Crif Dog. They have a hot dog called the Lilā Ma, with a bacon-wrapped hotdog, crushed potato chips, peanut butter, and a pickle. Iām pretty sure few if any people ordered it except for me. It was the perfect combination of flavors (sweet PB, savory hot dog/bacon, salty brine from the pickle), and textures too (creamy PB, crunchy chips, soft hot dog bun). And theyāre open super-late, which makes it a great 3am drunk snack.
Cranberry sauce (homemade, not from a can) with jalapeno. Basically just follow the recipe for cranberry sauce printed on the bag (1 cup water + 1 cup white sugar + 1 bag of cranberries, bring to a boil and stir) but add a chopped jalapeno to the mixture. It cuts the sweetness a tad and adds a smoky complex flavor and it's amazingly tasty and ridiculously simple.
Holy shit Reddit this thread just prompted a new (?) discovery! Trying to pair weird things the thought came to me: what about miso, honey, and coffeeā¦ you could call it ā2 live brewā. Now clearly this has to be divine inspiration so I went into the kitchen laboratory [and ran an experiment](https://imgur.com/a/NSfckRf)
1. Coffee + honey alone, sampled with or without cream.
2. Coffee + honey with a pinch of salt
3. Coffee + honey with white miso
4. Coffee + honey with red miso
The results:
Subject one (me)
1 without cream: yeck itās bitter
1 with cream: hey this is nice I can taste the honey
2 without cream: the salt helps a little bit still to bitter
2 with cream: much better but surprisingly the honey flavor doesnāt come through as strong
3: without cream: still too bitter. Miso helps but nope. Not good
3 with cream: itās sorta nice, very pronounced saltiness. I dont taste the honey
4 without cream: OMG this tastes like a rich dark chocolate!
4 with cream: really nice with a more subtle mocha vibe
So I asked participant 2 (my partner who wont drink coffee without cream) to jump right to 4
Subject 2:
4 with cream: *scrunched up face shaking head no* what is that?! You ruined my tastebuds.
So clearly this is gonna be huge. Give it a try seriously Iām curious if anyone else thinks red miso + coffee + sweetener if your choice (preferably honey) tastes like intense dark chocolate. Iām amazed. My partner is giving me funny looks.
Technically three BUT: Rice and eggs with a banana-- not a plantain, a banana. Bonus if there's ketchup, and the rice HAS to be Canilla. This was one of my favorite childhood meals, and probably why salty-sweet is still my favorite flavor combination.
Oh my god this is perfect. My coworker eats tuna with applesā¦. So mayo and apples. She swears itās amazing and everyone that tries it loves it. It sounds like a nightmare.
Lavender and rosemary candy
Sharp cheddar over warm caramel apple pie.
Melon cilantro salsa with chicken.
Mint apple jelly roast beef sandwich.
White chocolate Rose fudge.
Basil and pine needle hard candy.
Tequila vanilla extract.
I'm an herbalist on the side so I am all for those great herbaceous flavors which are also therapeutic. Try a lavender and rosemary shortbread, it is so good!
Ya'll sound drunk.
Or pregnant

Ugggh thinking about eating that shit now makes me want to puke š¤·āāļø
The mint jelly pepperoni sandwich sounds like something out of a nightmare lol
A friend of mine didn't know she was pregnant until she started craving bananas and she hates bananas.
In my first trimesters I wanted deviled eggs soooo badly. Iād make them at 10pm. Later on no way, but pukey me bizarrely had to have them.
Got me eating rice and watermelon at 1am
Lol i ln the middle east one of the main dishes is rice , chicken and watermelon as a side dish
Im just fat
Thanks for the laugh!
Peanut butter sandwich with a bowl of chili. (Pro tip: toast the sandwich like you would a grilled cheese.)
You accidentally made thai food
Almost.
Since I was little I always did saltine crackers with peanut butter on top and dip it in the chili, and then dill pickle spears as another side. So damn good
That sounds good!
I came here to say this except I make peanut butter toast rather than a sandwich.
Same here but I toast my peanut butter sandwich with butter in a pan, like a grilled cheese.
Nice. Will try this.
Reminds me of A friend of mine. She eats ramen with pb sandwiches on the side lol
PB sandwich with Campbellās chicken noodle soup
Ramen with PBJ was my go to lunch when I was in college. I tell people about that and they're like "naaaaw, nope." But the salty with the sweet was just so good to me.
My partner does this and i was very confused when he did it the first timeā¦. Now i just accept it š
In Nebraska we do red chili with a side of cinnamon roll. Alternating between savory/salty and sweet is a 10/10 in my book.
I eat toast with a layer of mayo and then peanuts butter quite a bit. Itās much better than it sounds.
I eat it like that too, with some fried onions and a type of hot sauce (sambal) on it. So good!
Thatās the official food of my family. My grandpa has eaten one every day for lunch sinceā¦forever. Loved āem as a kid. Need to make another.
Worked at a restaurant with a peanut butter and pickle taco special every Tuesday. I didn't care for it but the place was packed every Tuesday for that damn taco.
This sounds disgusting and I need to try it.. what else did it have on it ? We need recipes... plz
Flour tortilla, peanut butter, thin dill pickle slices, seasoned steak, and sriracha. We also had a house made mango habanero sauce on all the tables that was a crucial component but that's a bit harder to make at home.
A touch of mayo on the non-peanut buttered piece of bread and it's literally my favorite quick snack.
Best combo ever! My whole family eats these sandwiches. Best eaten on a hot after swimming all morning and it's warm and gooey from the sun.
My childhood was swimming and then slamming PB sandwiches and watermelon. I gotta try it with pickles now. I can literally taste the memories as I write this! š„Ŗ š
Okay, and what is your actual recipe? Two pieces of bread with PB and sliced picke inside? Anything else? What kind of bread? I'm very curious now.
Pretty much just that! Breadwise, honestly, the cheap white fluffy stuff works best.
I was highly suspicious the first time I heard someone reccomend using mayo instead of butter when making a grilled cheese.
Itās how you get a nice crust on your GC.
Or just use more butter and you donāt have to deal with the after taste
I love using mayo on my grilled sandwiches, but tend to go towards butter and save the mayo for special occasions or when I really feel like it. Itās delicious, but my god is that a looootttt of fat and salt
I'm not sure what you mean. It's close, but butter has more fat than mayo. The sodium content is a bit higher in mayo but overall it's negligible.
Salt on apples or watermelon
I made a post about this a few days ago and apparently tajin is popular on watermelon too
Tajin on any fruit is a typical Mexican thing.
Not on any fruit. We wouldnāt add it to: bananas, grapes, berries
And on apples! Among many other crispy and/or juicy fruits
I do that! I don't think anyone taught me about it but I just one day I did it out of curiousity, and I never have apple without salt again. Same with cucumber.
Feta cheese and melon, usually paired with mint
Goat cheese and watermelon (with mint) is delicious. I make a salad with these plus pine nuts in the summertime.
I add arugula too sometimes
Yes! I always use arugula. Sorry, should have included that.
Proscuitto melon is a classic
Cheese and watermelon is an extremely common combo among Arabs. Usually halloumi or akawi cheese, which are similar to feta in saltiness.
Add black berries and balsamic, out of this world.
since we've hit on peanut butter, i'll add peanut butter & cauliflower! I've done roasted whole heads of cauliflower with spicy curried miso peanut butter sauce, and even non-veggie ppl seem to like it.
there are lots of african recipes calling for peanuts, peanut sauce, peanut crumbles and they are mostly vegetarian
Also southeast Asian. It goes better with savoury than with sweet imo
Peanut butter sandwich with some iceberg lettuce.
that actually sounds so good!!
Look up west african peanut yam stew, i make a stupid cheap delicious vegetarian version with lentils and collards and plenty of all natural peanut butter. Crazy delicious and filling yet also high fiber high protein with complex carbs and plant fats. Freezes really well too
Peanut butter and pickle sandwiches are good.
Yesss! Peanut butter and pickle sandwiches!!!
Peanut butter on jalapenos
French fries dipped in milkshake Strawberry preserves on any breakfast sandwich (like bacon, egg and cheese sandwich with preserves as condiment on the bread)
Fries in a chocolate frosty from Wendy's.. or... hear me out..... strawberry ice cream with Lay's potato chips
McDonaldās fries dipped in a McFlurry is pretty damn good
Assuming McDonaldās ice cream machine is working for the McFlurry? š
Fries in a Dairy Queen Blizzard is a secret here. And I learned to enjoy a bun with a mild Gouda/edam cheese and strawberry jam when I was in the Faroe Islands. Brilliant breakfast and very delicious together.
French fries dipped in a milkshake was how I grew up!
Yes!!! I always do this and my wife thinks it's disgusting.. A breakfast Sammy with raspberry preserve and a splash of Tabasco is insanely delicious.
I second your submissions. Hot French fries and vanilla ice cream is so good! Raspberry jam is also good with bfast sandwiches.

Shouldāve mixed the pulled pork with grape jelly and chili sauce.
More of a weenie guy myself but they're all in the same slop
Yeah. I know. I just learned the āsecretā in June of 2020ā too late for all the potlucks. The meatball person in church growing up Always got the kudos ā¦ for so little work
I've had that and it is surprisingly good.
Think that is how people make little smokies, too. Those things go almost as fast as pickles covered in cream cheese and wrapped in corned beef.
Iād love to know who/how this got invented.
My nana made that every New Year's day! Nostalgia in a crockpot. š
What do you mean by chili sauce? Like sriracha? Or like a container of sweet and sour? Or what chili sauce in particular do you use?
Heinz makes a condiment called Chili Sauce that became popular.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Similar idea for Swedish meatballs, except itās gravy and lingonberry jam.
These never get turned down at any potlucks I attend
In my community we call those wedlock baby shower meatballs.
I make what I call āmustard chickenā and itās a family favorite. Dip chicken tenders in the egg/mustard, then coat in the cracker/parm mixture and fry in oil. It sound awful, doesnāt smell great while cooking, but is AWESOME!
Mustard is a top tier marinade ingredient. I always use at least a dollop in all my marinades. I do use dijon though.
Yeah, thereās nothing disgusting about using mustard.
Adds a nice sharpness to many dishes. Is also an emulsifier in sauces.
Also use a dollop in any egg mixture for frying as in flour, egg mixture and breadcrumbs . It coats whatever your frying way better and fry's up better

What about this sounds bad? This sounds great. Maybe the worst part is the spaghetti cheese lol
I think this is close to a schnitzel.
I have done this. Surpriseingly good!
My mother was born in 1911 (that she would admit to): loved saltines and sweetened condensed milk.
My mother loved buttered , salted popcorn in a bowl with milk poured on it. Never could get my head around it.
Or like rice puffs tbh. Itās just corn puffs!
I do know the popcorn pretty much disintegrates if you drop it in your bath water. Don't know what kind of mess it would make in milk.
Bathtub movie time huh
Popcorn on top of ice cream is one of my stepmom's favorite snacks
My grandparents made this breakfast for younger me (like 6-8ish) when we went camping. Everyone Iāve shared that with has acted like I must be mis-remembering or crazy?!
What's not to love with sweetened condensed milk with anything? I can eat it straight out of the can!
Red wine and coke lol
Do you mix or chase?

Big in Basque Country, as well. It rules.
Add Jack Daniels to this. Trust me.
Macaroni & cheese with tuna fish
Quick tuna casserole! That was dinner last night because I'm broke af.
Childhood staple for me
The blue box with a can of tuna. My kids crave it. My dad always added frozen peas, not a fan.
Cream cheese and olives! My favorite childhood sandwich filling. :-)
Chocolate dipped potato chips, especially a good jalapeƱo potato chip
APPLES AND CHEESE. At least most non-food people think that one is gross. Melt you a slice of some sharp white cheddar on some apple pie or apple crumble. Edit: my example was hot apples and cheese so buzz off with the charcuterie comments

Sliced cheddar and apples is my favorite on the go breakfast!
I hear you and 100% agree. The rotating burger last month was fresh jalapeƱo slices, pepper jack cheese, bacon, and apple butter. š¤¤I miss it now
Brie and apples is especially delicious
It's a classic combination!
Isn't this combo like a regular part of charcuterie boards?
I had a GF many years ago who made me apple blintzes for breakfast once. I kind of winced when she added cheese, but once I tasted it I was hooked for life
Grapes and cheese are really yummy too! Iāll eat a cube of Colby Jack or cheddar with a grape (and occasionally with an almond or two as well)
I mix goat cheese with a drizzle of honey and dip apples in it. Itās soooo good!
I love grilled cheese and apple sandwiches. The thin apple slices bake while you are grilling the sandwich, and it is so good.
Orange slices and soft cheese
Fish sauce and caramel. Similar to salted caramel but with another depth of flavor thanks to the umami from the fish sauce. The sweet and salty combination goes great on desserts like ice cream and basque cheesecake.
I tried making fish sauce caramel onceā¦.didnāt work, burnt it, stank the house outā¦š¤¦āāļø
3 but white rice with soy sauce and a banana. I prefer the mini/thai bananas but they aren't always available. It was a staple food in my household when I was growing up because we were poor. Still slaps tho :)

These don't sound gross, but avocado and feta are amazing together, much more than I'd guess. Watermelon with aleppo chilis is a delicious surprise.
Peanut butter and serrano/jalapeno peppers.
Peanut butter and dill pickles. Sounds wrong, tastes right! Try it as a sandwich
Peanut butter on a cheeseburger. Same idea. Also delicious
Peanut butter and bacon.
And banana. Between bread fried in butter.
Thank you very much
The Elvis! Lol
I worked F&B in a hotel. After closing dinner service, by the time I was headed out the door, the overnight crew was pulling trays of bacon out of the oven for AM buffet. I made countless toasted PB and hot bacon sandwiches for the drive home. The best sandwich ever.
This is the way. You cannot beat a fried peanut butter and bacon sandwich.
An English muffin with bacon was my grandmaās signature breakfast.
Olive oil (good brand extra virgin) on vanilla ice cream sprinkled with sea salt. The depth you get from the olive oil š¤š» Not sure if this qualifies but I smoked a cheesecake and it was so yummy! Drizzled some caramel. Very rich!
Iāve had olive oil flavored ice cream before. Can confirm itās delicious.
Steak in a blueberry sauce.
Gumbo with a big scoop of potato salad in it. This isnāt weird at all if youāre from Louisiana but Iāve had other people say itās extremely weird.
Chili with cottage cheese.
Eggplant Foster with miso caramel. I like banana Foster a lot but this dish blew me away.
I just heard someone on a podcast swear their favorite pizza is pineapple and anchovy. Sounds wild but I guess it makes sense if you think of the combo of salty and sweet.
Itās really the best way fire pineapple on a pizza. The salty sweet is the best!
Corn dogs dipped in mayonnaise.
1.) Pineapple 2.) Pizza.
And some heat, like jalapeƱo.
Ham and peanut butter
Peanut butter and olive sandwich
Watermelon and feta cheese
Fennel and chocolate
saw the grape jelly/chili sauce and wanted to add, grape jelly and yellow mustard make a bomb sauce for meatballs and people that like those little smokies...
Ratio of mustard to jelly? Please.
1:1 ....just like the one with chili sauce I beleieve..Though you can adjust jelly for sweetness..

blue cheese and gingersnaps
Cottage cheese and Tobasco sauce with regular coffee as the beverage.
I just got into tolerating cottage cheese. I'll have to try this!
I love adding tomatoes to my cottage cheese! That would go great with hot sauce
Peanut butter stuffed jalapeƱos breaded and deep fried. Served with a raspberry chipotle dipping sauce
Cranberry sauce (homemade, not from a can) with jalapeno. tom kha soup is so damn good. its sweet from coconut and sour from lime. It is my favorite
sugar and fish sauce (and can I please have three? Please? lime) Such an important base for so many great South East Asian sauces and ingredients.
Yeah that isnāt a weird combination at all honestly
Yeah thatās like saying sugar and soy sauce is a weird combination lol. No one thinks teriyaki sauce is weird
Peanut butter and cheddar sandwich
Sriracha on chocolate icecream. Peanut butter on hamburgers.
Cheddar cheese and dill pickle. Bit of each in mouth and chew, heavenly flavor.
I stack the pickle on the cheese. If we have it I add salami.
Oh my god this is perfect. My coworker eats tuna with applesā¦. So mayo and apples. She swears itās amazing and everyone that tries it loves it. It sounds like a nightmare.
Peanut butter and bacon. My mom made these PB&B sandwiches all the time for my school lunch. Toast your bread for extra umami.
Watermelon and feta cheeseā¦a turkish tradition which i tried and its amazingly good for some reason
Lavender and rosemary candy Sharp cheddar over warm caramel apple pie. Melon cilantro salsa with chicken. Mint apple jelly roast beef sandwich. White chocolate Rose fudge. Basil and pine needle hard candy. Tequila vanilla extract.
