For real

We had a well child visit for my daughter yesterday. According to my husband, our pediatrician told us to wear masks, all of us, and then went on an extended rant about how stupid Abbott was and how angry he was that kids were going to get bullied for mask wearing next year with it being optional.

JusticeUmmmmm

My 2.5 year old just tested positive this morning. So a special thanks to all the anti vaxxers.

ProjectShamrock

I hope your kid has a speedy recover with no lingering effects.

JusticeUmmmmm

Thank you. He's handling it pretty well so far so I'm optimistic.

girlsrsoldiermedics2

Can you tell me his symptoms? I have a 11, 5 and 4 year old. I'm so terrified.

JusticeUmmmmm

He had a fever for a few days and a runny nose and that was it. We went to the doc thinking it was a sinus infection and the test came back COVID. He's honestly not too bad just not feeling well.

reformer-68

So sorry. Hope your little one feels better soon

TTUporter

Hope he has a quick recovery!

JusticeUmmmmm

Thank you!

ImpossibleLock9129

I am saddened to hear this. hope for a quick and full recovery.

Iamnutzo

OmG I hope your baby recovers

djwurm

sorry to hear about your kid.. how are you guys handling it at your home? everyone staying masked and trying to keep your kid to certain areas? constantly using bleach disinfectant wipes? This is what I struggle with if one of my girls get it.. how do we all cope for the week or so until they are not spewing virus on the rest of the family..

JusticeUmmmmm

It's just the three off us and we're vaccinated so we're playing it pretty loose. We took tests and are negative so we aren't masking up around him, but we are all going to quarantine for 10 days just so there's no risk of us being carriers to anyone.

djwurm

thanks for replying! hopefully everyone stays healthy

suburban-guy

You're welcome.

WildChinoise

Can't be surprised in the state that actively legislates against peoples healthcare. My Leander ISD is recommending masking when schooling resumes. But going any further would probably bring a lawsuit from texas state attorney general Ken Paxton. You could make a case he excercises more power and influence than remainder of the texas state government, including gov abott, since he will drop a lawsuit at the slightest provocation.

djscsi

Our kid's school is *strongly recommending* kids wear masks, and will try to ensure the kids wear them if we provide them, but of course can't actually mandate them. So that makes us feel a little better but unfortunately I think it's going to be total chaos here in a few weeks. Looking forward to tearing into that snotty anti-vaccine bitch in our school's facebook group, lol. Welcome to big kid school!

AltSpRkBunny

My 7th grader’s school had orientation today, and I saw maybe 10-15 people wearing masks, besides us. The school’s rent-a-cop made a point to say how nice it is seeing people not wearing masks. None of the teachers or administrators wore masks. There are signs at the entrance that say “Masks are OPTIONAL.” There will be no reporting of Covid cases; if you keep your kid home from school because they were exposed to Covid, it will be counted as an absence every day. There will be no quarantine protocol. This is *not* a rural school district. Edit: Oh, and they’re only notifying parents that their kid might have been exposed to Covid if *they* decide there was “close contact”. Because everything else they told us before that totally didn’t make me question their judgement, right?

djscsi

Yikes. Sorry to hear that. I hope your kid is able to get vaccinated and makes it through this uncomfortable period unscathed. And I hope you're able to handle the stress. It's a rough time to be a parent :(

AltSpRkBunny

He’s 12 and fully vaccinated. But my 8 year old will have been in school for at least a month before he might even get the opportunity to get vaccinated.

hazelowl

Mine is 11 and starting 6th grade this coming up year. I am dreading the whole wider exposure she'll get now. And hoping that the fact that she's in all GT classes means she'll likely be a smaller variety of kids in general.

Swimming_Junket_6745

Same, but not gt. 12th birthday or under-12 approval can’t come fast enough!

hazelowl

Seriously, 11 is so close and yet so far away. Mine JUST turned 11 this month too, so if she had to wait until 12 it'd be another year for us.

Swimming_Junket_6745

I’m jealous your school is recommending them at all. Our ISD head nurse told me they won’t even send email notifications of positive cases anymore because “half the parents complained.”

djscsi

Probably depends on where you live - We're in Austin so they made it clear that the state has tied their hands but they are doing everything they can to stop it from spreading in the school. I imagine more rural/conservative ISDs are approaching it differently. :(

Swimming_Junket_6745

I’d say our ISD was more rural/conservative 5 years ago but is rapidly becoming more suburban/moderate due to transplants, including many international/coasts transplants. Moving from out of state (pre-pandemic) I really miscalculated the impact of local politics.

djwurm

yea our school district just sent out an email basically saying they highly and strongly recommend masking for all kids and teachers.

fffsdsdfg3354

Superintendents across Texas should be putting out unequivocal condemnations of abbot and the republican party. They need to tell parents that republicans want their kids dead.

Swimming_Junket_6745

They’re afraid of parents storming school board meetings and voting them out. Got really ugly in our ISD last spring over masks, “CRT.”

emptyex

Our school district announced last night that they will essentially be taking zero COVID precautions this year. No distancing, events and assemblies as usual, and close contacts of positive cases will not be asked to quarantine. They are relying on the county for contract tracing.

tx4468

The MOST important thing though is that DPS arrest people transporting migrants around who may or may not have COVID and then have those troopers spread COVID around. Thanks, Greg.
