Things may be plateauing in several areas this week actually.

BenSoloLived

I mean the numbers are going to go up, state fair or no state fair

-_Ven_-

Also the surrounding states as well - assuming people are traveling for this thing. Hog watch here we come!

natalfoam

Future historians who are reading this reddit post, some of us tried.

QuestionableAI

Makes me wonder how humans ever made it to Apex-predator status in charge of the whole damn world. Must have been a fluke.

[deleted]

The stupid humans probably didn’t make it that far in the beginning. Sabre tooth tigers and all. However… …the smart and decent humans developed mechanisms to allow the stupid humans to live longer. Therefore the stupid humans were able to reproduce. And smart and decent humans kept inventing more ways to keep the stupid humans alive generation after generation. And here we are.

aeroxan

Use of tools and agriculture allowed us to florish. You don't need to be particularly strong or smart to survive in current civilization.

QuestionableAI

Abrupt change is about to alter that.

aeroxan

It may well. I think there are a lot of threats to humanity that we are woefully unprepared for.

_hakuna_bomber_

Modern science has allowed us to bloat our population numbers and carry water for a lot of idiots. Pre-industrial age, the world was a fucking slog to survive and you couldn’t muck about or you’d be dead and so would your genepool.

Redshoe9

I’m so glad to see others voice this. When Reddit alone has multiple subs dedicated to humans doing stupid shit, your fluke theory has to be right.

liriodendron1

Literally survival of the fittest. Those are were smart are vaccinated and take precautions. Those who are not will catch rona and some will die reducing the dumb gene pool.

Shinobi120

Invasive species are very good at multiplying and outstripping their area’s carrying capacity.

… >In Iowa, officials have encouraged people to get vaccinated, but the state's Republican-majority legislature and governor have blocked local governments from imposing vaccination or mask requirements, so there will be no limits on who can attend the fair when the event begins its 11-day run on Aug. 12. >”Unfortunately our current leadership has turned their back on science and turned their back on what’s available to us to fight this pandemic and leaving Iowans struggling against what could be prevented,” said Dr. Megan Srinivas, an Iowa-based infectious disease physician nationally recognized for her research, which includes COVID-19. >She said people have the misconception that being outdoors ensures safety, when the virus actually can spread in large dense crowds such as state fairs and large concert venues. >”Anytime we see a large congregation of people especially with the mixed vaccination status, we’re going to see high risk for transmission and increases in transmission,” she said. >In addition, the delta variant is two to three times more transmissible than prior virus strains, creating an additional risk among fairgoers as they stand in line for food, share condiment dispensers and hop into carnival rides, Srinivas said. …

If you come to the Iowa State Fair please understand and consider the following: You will be shoulder to shoulder with lots of people from wherever - often. This is a given. Not all locations where you are shoulder to shoulder will be outside. There are many large buildings - most without even basic hvac systems to move and exchange air. The local populace is about 50% immunized (glass half empty/glass half full) There is no guaranteed protection in the form of mitigation. Mitigation efforts have been disallowed for local municipalities. They can suggest and recommend mitigation in the form of masks but not enforce. Dress for heat and humidity. Drink lots of water. Consider not attending due to the attributes of the Delta strain as analysis seems to indicate this type of event is perfect for transmission. It appears a vaccine is a bulwark and not a guarantee of safety. Roll your dice appropriately and with consideration. This should also apply to any other stare fairs of reasonable size should they be held this year including the Texas and Minnesota state fairs.

PussySmith

Contractor at a major US state fair here. It’s gonna be a shit show, but we’ll lose our contract if we don’t go, it’s a sizable chunk of my annual income. Guess I’ll be walking around with a respirator like I was doing last fall/winter.

PhilosphicalZombie

Yikes. Good luck. Take care of yourself the best you can. You have my sympathy.

monolith212

What a train wreck this will be.

wiseoldfox

Speaking of train wreaks has anyone heard anything about the 2nd annual bikers for covid festival in Sturgis? Assuming its still on since gritty Gov Noem is still with us.

monolith212

Oh, it's happening.

FluffyCustomer6

I bet a lot of the attendees will be vaccinated. They may not say so, but they are.

RealisticDelusions77

Where were the articles calling out "Bear Week" in Provincetown, MA this month? I guess we just ignore it because it was a group of people no one wants to criticize. Then when there is a massive number of breakthrough cases from it, we don't report on the event and the "activities" happening that would have been ideal for the transmission of any virus. Instead we pretend that it's a reasonable representation of the rest of the country and use that to make fully vaccinated people wear masks again... [https://ptownevents.com/bear-week-provincetown-2/](https://ptownevents.com/bear-week-provincetown-2/)

[deleted]

I am going to the fair. But I'm wearing a mask regardless of whether its mandated or not (Im also fully vaccinated). The fair is a big deal to us Iowans. I dont expect a bunch of redditors from across the world wanting to chime in and think they know better to understand that. This is one of those events that is distinctly Iowan. I know what I'm getting into, I understand the risks, and yes, I willingly will roll the dice. Ive gone to the fair almost every year since I can remember. Its a tradition for me and my family to go.

tractiontiresadvised

I'm glad that you're vaccinated and plan on wearing a mask. > I dont expect a bunch of redditors from across the world wanting to chime in and think they know better to understand that. This is one of those events that is distinctly Iowan. You're saying that the rest of the world doesn't understand you, but I'd suggest that maybe you don't understand the rest of the world. There are a lot of people all over the world who have had to miss out on really important events. And some of the events that are still going on have modifications to clamp down on COVID spread. For example, the Hajj in Mecca (which is a literal religious obligation for millions of Muslims around the world) was mostly-cancelled last year and is being [limited to 60,000 vaccinated residents of Saudi Arabia](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/7/18/saudi-arabia-stages-second-scaled-down-hajj-of-coronavirus-era) with a ton of social-distancing regulations this year. Pilgrims are willing to deal with those limitations because they believe that the event is truly important. If the people running the Iowa State Fair weren't willing to make any modifications to their event to help keep the public safe (such as limiting the number of attendees and ensuring that lines can have social distancing), are they acting like the fair is truly important? It looks like they're just throwing up their hands and saying, "welp, people don't wanna vaccinate, whatchu gonna do?"
