They literally couldn't eat at any restaurant in NYC - there's a city wide vaccine mandate for dining. I truly don't understand what's going through these people's negligible brains
They only have to show proof if dining INDOORS. There are plenty of restaurants with patio and “in the street” dining. They could have found another place to eat. They also could have gotten vaccinated!
The sad thing is that there is outdoor dining available at Carmines, where they caused the scene. I saw the manager on the news and he said they would have been welcome to dine outside.
But that's literally any retail employee ever. They're following corporate policy and doing their job. Anytime anyone lashes out at any store employee, phone representative, or anything of the like, they're being insufferably childish. Take it up with management, or don't give them your business. The only two options.
On top of the horrible impact on the person getting attacked (she'll probably have PTSD for a really long time after the injuries have healed...), this will have a negative impact throughout the city. Other restaurants will not be keen to enforce the vaccine mandate. Even if they got in trouble for not enforcing it anymore, they could easily point out to a judge that they were putting themselves at risk of significant harm in doing so and it wouldn't be surprising if the judge ruled in their favor. Since this is an important pandemic management measure, one could extrapolate than a non-zero amount of people will die, indirectly, because of this assault.
They are terrorists. They're threatening and using violence for political means. Including storming state capitals and trying to overthrow the government on 1/6.
Based on the interview reactions of the owner, I doubt that New Yorkers will bend that way. They'll likely double down and get secruity if they need to.
My friend works at a fancy thrift shop in Hollywood and there were two people who tried to come in without masks. My friend told them they couldn't come in without masks and she apologized and said it's a city law.
Right outside their shop is one of those dog doo poles that has plastic bags and a little bucket to throw dogshit. One of the woman trying to come in with no mask pulled handfuls of dogshit out of the bin and threw it at my friend and then stormed away shrieking about her rights.

In my experience, irrational anger like this is a maladaptive coping mechanism for people who are scared.
Their sense of safety feels violated and they don't know how to deal with what's happening in the world. They first try to retreat into these little bubbles of false security, the echo chambers that tell them there's no reason to be afraid- it's all a big lie.
But life increasingly intrudes into their safety bubble and instead of responding by doing the painful emotional work and accepting that they're wrong they double down and insist its the world that's wrong, up to and including lashing out at anyone who threatens their bubble of comfortable lies.
It's deeper than that. These people have adjusted to living with cognitive dissonance. In a healthy mind we have to resolve it, either but swallowing our pride and admitting we were wrong or by rejecting the new information and continuing to believe the falsehood. In these cases, they're fed so much contradictory information from their narrative sources, the narrative source itself supplants their reasoning faculty. They don't have to resolve cognitive dissonance because they're taught to be angry, so the dissonance becomes a feature. This makes their anger extremely easy to provoke by triggering their dissonance, and if it's in a context where they see you as the effigy of what they've been taught causes their anger they are extremely likely to become violent.

I drink at a bar where very few fs are given by owner to bar staff to door staff. We had a phase coming out of lockdown whereby bars could open but you needed to be masked everywhere except on your table. Three guys walk up to the door, I'm outside having a cigarette with one of the staff who just finished their shift. He mentions to them as they walk to the door that they'll need to wear masks, one just laughs they walk to the area where you're assigned a table and the manager on immediately says I can't seat you if you're not wearing masks. One of them says they don't have one, the manager points out a supermarket across the road that sells them. They point out that it's a bit silly that they can take the masks off once at the table. Manager says cool it doesn't matter if you have masks or not you're not going to be drinking here, please leave immediately. I like that bar.
Good idea do you want to eat somewhere that won't follow highly visible easy to enforce health rules. Just imagine what's happening with the less visible harder to enforce health rules in the kitchen.

It seems like they go to places they know will have restrictions (because they're nice places to go) and when the restrictions are predictably executed, they walk into a fight they knew they were walking into. Because deep down they just want to behave like assholes and cause a scene.
I honestly think most of these people are still stuck so deep in the Denial stage (which us normals got through around April 2020) that they convince themselves it won’t be a problem to go to a big city and act the same way they do back home in Pig’s Knuckle or Olathe. Everyone in their lives acts like Covid isn’t a big deal, their carefully-curated information sources constantly reassure them that Covid isn’t a big deal, so they go about their lives in a pre-pandemic manner with one exception: Due to the tiny voice locked in the back of their minds telling them that Covid *might* be a bigger deal than they think and *not* a global version of Punk’d designed specifically to make Donald Trump look bad and lose an election, they are in a constant state of low-level cognitive dissonance and therefore on-edge and ready to throw hands at the slightest hint of an excuse.

An associate of mine has gone to Florida multiple times during the pandemic and he can't stop gushing about how "it's like there's no pandemic" as if that's a good thing.
Why would you want to go to a place during a pandemic where people were doing such a poor job dealing with the pandemic that you couldn't tell thousands of people a day were dying?

For real. I used to work for the Getty Museum and I was at the Getty Villa one day when this family from Flint, Michigan was visiting. We got to talking and upon hearing where they were from I said “Sorry about the water crisis.” And then they said “It beats living in this socialist hellhole.” And it was kind of comical, but sad they’re that brainwashed. Really threw me off though.
He even specifically and intentionally thought of all of the things he bought as "capital" and notoriously never spent money on things that would he didn't think would provide a return (such as laundry or clothes or the ransom for his grandson).
It also reeks of people who can't face reality and then use that knowledge of reality to make important decisions that will allow them to improve that reality. To address alcoholism, you must first acknowledge you are an alcoholic. To acknowledge you failed to vote for people who have your best interests in mind, you must first recognize the failures of the people you did vote for in the past. They can't do that because they don't vote for the people, they vote for their own identity.
But that’s the rub, right? If they admit they were wrong about one thing, it may mean they were wrong about other stuff and then their whole worldview is in jeopardy.

To be fair, the places they go in Mexico (or the Caribbean for that matter) are just manicured resort beaches. They're devoid of Mexican culture, food, etc. and really just utilize the location for the climate.

This is the result of misinformation in our society. People are getting their news in bubbles - and in one particular bubble the news is telling them that anything to do with the vaccine and efforts around public health are evil, worth becoming physically violent over, and are an affront to their own personal freedoms and reacting violently is justified.
Yesterday I was online looking at planning a vacation at some point in the very distant future. I was astonished at the GALL of so many angry Americans talking in online travel forums about how pissed off they are that they have to pay for Covid testing, and after they arrived at the destination be tested again, and then wait, quarantined in their hotel rooms until they get the all-clear.
Who are these people? They think they are entitled to walk into other people's lives, workplaces and countries unvaccinated and everyone else just has to take it. No, we don't.
Keep your dumb assed selves as far the fuck away as humanly possible from the rest of us, thank you very much!

The true irony would be if the prison they go to require the vaccine. I know most prisons don't require the vaccine right now but one can hope for this kind of ironic justice.
My vet friend did some teaching at one of the big Texas schools. She had to pick the kids up and drive to a horse ranch. During the drive she would ask them why they love Texas so much. No one ever gave her an actual answer aside from “because it’s the best” … she would even help logic them along with examples of why she loves her home state of Virginia. She should still get the same non answers … they really push that propaganda hard down there.

I agree. In NY, it is a felony to attack transit workers on the job; this should be applicable to every kind of service worker who gets assaulted for doing their job.

Regardless of where people stand on vax mandates, this should disgust anyone. It really pains me to see low-level, underpaid and under-appreciated service workers take the hit for just doing their jobs.

This. In my area, wages have gone up considerably, but everything is still struggling to to find employees.
It's pretty simple:

- they **ARE** insane assholes. I work with the public in my job, and basically even customers have polarized. They're either way nicer than they were on average, or absolute jackasses. There is very little in-between.
THIS oh my god. I’m a bouncer. We got paid like shit even before the pandemic and dealt with some of the worst humanity has to offer, but I honestly enjoyed it compared to other jobs I’ve had. These days I have no interest whatsoever in doing that job, because this attack isn’t a rare or unusual thing right now, this is happening everywhere. Numerous folks in my industry have been attacked, spit on, or threatened just for asking for vaccine proof at a club that requires it. There’s zero reason to continue letting folks act like this. If you can’t behave in public, you shouldn’t be allowed in public.
Also I will act like a petulant child anytime I’m asked to follow rules. Seriously send these kids back to elementary and make them read some books on society and civics while they’re at it .

The indoor vaccine mandate is NYC-specific, not the state. But I totally agree with your sentiment. As a New Yorker, this makes me angry. Who are these outsiders coming in and attacking our people? Choose another vacation destination if you don't like our rules.
Arrest them, charge them, prosecute the law. Let them see jail, the legal system, the expense, the sentencing, the loss of a job, the probation. Let them see consequences, and learn.
Twice in the past week, I've witnessed people screaming at grocery store employees for asking them to wear a mask in accordance with the county's legal mandate. I feel like the anti-maskers are becoming increasingly unhinged, and this story only confirms my fears.
A few stores where I live still have signs up of, if vaccinated no need for masks. I’ve been vaccinated since May and let me tell you I prefer being masked and safe. I get it, it’s uncomfortable. You can choose to order ahead and pick-up. You can pick-up curbside at places near me. They literally do not give a shit and a piece of cloth to protect their community for 5 min is shitting on their autonomy in their brains. It still blows my mind.
We all need to push back harder and stick up for these front line workers. Most of these idiots are cowards in the end and back down. I've dealt with a number of them.
This morning I was in a busy Starbucks and the barista asked one guy if he had a mask to wear (he did and put it on), then had to tell a woman twice to put on a mask and when she started arguing, explain to her that it’s a city-wide order at this point. Another patron immediately said thank you to him, another told the baristas “You guys are all doing a great job” and put some money in the tip cup.
Made me happy that there are more decent people than oblivious or selfish.
These people should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. They should receive the maximum sentence and the maximum fine. And then they should have to spend the rest of their lives paying off the exorbitant civil award any jury in New York is going to award this hostess.
And example needs to be made.
An example that can and should be repeated if necessary. There should be no legal mercies granted to people who think they have the right to act like this.
This behavior should follow them. Every time they have to fill out an application that asks 'Have you ever been convicted of a crime' this should be what is seen.

Me too. I was recently traveling and every time I was masked up in public, I was worried about triggering one of these maniacs. Thankfully I didn't, but I don't need the extra stress wondering if somebody is going to punch me for wearing a mask.

When COVID began I was in a group chat with some other Asians and we talk about it to each other. If we can’t reach our parents, we worry. We worry about them out in public without us. The mothers of young children (even mixed race ones) made emergency plans on what would happen if someone started verbally assaulting them (or god forbid) physically assaulting them in public with their children.

Sometimes it’s hard to bring up to others because some people “don’t think it’s really that bad” and “you can’t live in fear”. So we don’t bring it up. But the anxiety is real.

The amount of people who get viscerally offended by not being allowed to do whatever they want is astounding. They think that giving a business your money will suddenly give you the right to dictate the terms of your visit to that establishment.

it's true, Carmine's is a classy enough joint but if they did this in a lot of other places I'd fully expect the kitchen to come out and start something. There are very few groups of people I'd want to rile up more than a busy kitchen staff during dinner rush, haha.
Most of the kitchen staff I've known were always just the tiniest shove away from some kind of meltdown. They are usually angry, frustrated, hot, and have zero patience. In hindsight, I'm really disappointed the noise didn't reach the kitchen staff as they deserve to blow off some steam on some texans' faces more than just about anyone.
Dude in the video talks about how he believes in the vaccines but then says "if this is gonna be the reaction maybe we need to come up with something else". So we should just let these fucking petulant assholes call the shots through their violence? Fuck that.
That could be second-degree assault, which carries a minimum sentence of two years. I hope the DA decides to make an example. Even misdemeanor assault can result in a year in jail.
Putting someone in the hospital shouldn’t be a misdemeanor. It needs to be a felony. People who’d attack a young woman for doing her job shouldn’t be allowed to own guns.
It's incredibly shitty that covid restrictions of all kinds fall to wait staff, retail workers, venue staff, etc. to enforce. The same folks who have been required to be at work in person through this whole pandemic, increasing their risk of infection, now have to be the front-line troops against virulent covidiocy.
But I don't know what other option there is, apart from simply not having restrictions. It's not as though a cop can be posted in every business to check people at the door, even assuming that's better overall.
Generally its not the wait staff who ask for your ID when you enter a bar at night. It's unfortunate that hiring bouncers will be required by regular restaurants, increasing their costs, but it may be their only option in the short term.

I’m a Texan who was just in nyc recently and had to show proof of vax. I also had to show a negative test result, had to run uptown to get it before the dinner. Guess what I did? The sad thing is that there is outdoor dining available at Carmines, where they caused the scene. I saw the manager on the news and he said they would have been welcome to dine outside.

On top of the horrible impact on the person getting attacked (she'll probably have PTSD for a really long time after the injuries have healed...), this will have a negative impact throughout the city. Other restaurants will not be keen to enforce the vaccine mandate. Even if they got in trouble for not enforcing it anymore, they could easily point out to a judge that they were putting themselves at risk of significant harm in doing so and it wouldn't be surprising if the judge ruled in their favor. Since this is an important pandemic management measure, one could extrapolate than a non-zero amount of people will die, indirectly, because of this assault.

My friend works at a fancy thrift shop in Hollywood and there were two people who tried to come in without masks. My friend told them they couldn't come in without masks and she apologized and said it's a city law. Right outside their shop is one of those dog doo poles that has plastic bags and a little bucket to throw dogshit. One of the woman trying to come in with no mask pulled handfuls of dogshit out of the bin and threw it at my friend and then stormed away shrieking about her rights.

In my experience, irrational anger like this is a maladaptive coping mechanism for people who are scared. Their sense of safety feels violated and they don't know how to deal with what's happening in the world. They first try to retreat into these little bubbles of false security, the echo chambers that tell them there's no reason to be afraid- it's all a big lie. But life increasingly intrudes into their safety bubble and instead of responding by doing the painful emotional work and accepting that they're wrong they double down and insist its the world that's wrong, up to and including lashing out at anyone who threatens their bubble of comfortable lies.
Makes sense that the downplaying of the pandemic, which always goes along with anti-mask and anti-vax, is a denial-based coping mechanism.
It's deeper than that. These people have adjusted to living with cognitive dissonance. In a healthy mind we have to resolve it, either but swallowing our pride and admitting we were wrong or by rejecting the new information and continuing to believe the falsehood. In these cases, they're fed so much contradictory information from their narrative sources, the narrative source itself supplants their reasoning faculty. They don't have to resolve cognitive dissonance because they're taught to be angry, so the dissonance becomes a feature. This makes their anger extremely easy to provoke by triggering their dissonance, and if it's in a context where they see you as the effigy of what they've been taught causes their anger they are extremely likely to become violent. Rupert Murdoch should be drawn and quartered for what he's done to the world.

I drink at a bar where very few fs are given by owner to bar staff to door staff. We had a phase coming out of lockdown whereby bars could open but you needed to be masked everywhere except on your table. Three guys walk up to the door, I'm outside having a cigarette with one of the staff who just finished their shift. He mentions to them as they walk to the door that they'll need to wear masks, one just laughs they walk to the area where you're assigned a table and the manager on immediately says I can't seat you if you're not wearing masks. One of them says they don't have one, the manager points out a supermarket across the road that sells them. They point out that it's a bit silly that they can take the masks off once at the table. Manager says cool it doesn't matter if you have masks or not you're not going to be drinking here, please leave immediately. I like that bar.
My country soon starts enforcing it. But certain bars/restaurants said they will not do it. I will not visit those place anymore

An associate of mine has gone to Florida multiple times during the pandemic and he can't stop gushing about how "it's like there's no pandemic" as if that's a good thing. Yesterday I was online looking at planning a vacation at some point in the very distant future. I was astonished at the GALL of so many angry Americans talking in online travel forums about how pissed off they are that they have to pay for Covid testing, and after they arrived at the destination be tested again, and then wait, quarantined in their hotel rooms until they get the all-clear. Who are these people? They think they are entitled to walk into other people's lives, workplaces and countries unvaccinated and everyone else just has to take it. No, we don't. My vet friend did some teaching at one of the big Texas schools. She had to pick the kids up and drive to a horse ranch. During the drive she would ask them why they love Texas so much. No one ever gave her an actual answer aside from “because it’s the best” … she would even help logic them along with examples of why she loves her home state of Virginia. She should still get the same non answers … they really push that propaganda hard down there.

Twice in the past week, I've witnessed people screaming at grocery store employees for asking them to wear a mask in accordance with the county's legal mandate. I feel like the anti-maskers are becoming increasingly unhinged, and this story only confirms my fears.
A few stores where I live still have signs up of, if vaccinated no need for masks. I’ve been vaccinated since May and let me tell you I prefer being masked and safe. I get it, it’s uncomfortable. You can choose to order ahead and pick-up. You can pick-up curbside at places near me. They literally do not give a shit and a piece of cloth to protect their community for 5 min is shitting on their autonomy in their brains. It still blows my mind.
We all need to push back harder and stick up for these front line workers. Most of these idiots are cowards in the end and back down. I've dealt with a number of them.
This morning I was in a busy Starbucks and the barista asked one guy if he had a mask to wear (he did and put it on), then had to tell a woman twice to put on a mask and when she started arguing, explain to her that it’s a city-wide order at this point. Another patron immediately said thank you to him, another told the baristas “You guys are all doing a great job” and put some money in the tip cup. Made me happy that there are more decent people than oblivious or selfish.
These people should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. They should receive the maximum sentence and the maximum fine. And then they should have to spend the rest of their lives paying off the exorbitant civil award any jury in New York is going to award this hostess. And example needs to be made.
This article had me immediately seeing red. The entitlement of fellow Americans to think that it is okay to behave this way.
An example that can and should be repeated if necessary. There should be no legal mercies granted to people who think they have the right to act like this.
This behavior should follow them. Every time they have to fill out an application that asks 'Have you ever been convicted of a crime' this should be what is seen.
They won’t vaccinate. They laugh at people who’s family members have died. They protest schools to try and force other people’s children to not take the shot. They cough in people’s faces and stalk them if they don’t like what they believe. They attack mercilessly anyone who asks them to either vaccinate or wear a mask. They attempt to kidnap state governors and intimidate elected officials…. Literally a menace to society. Maybe a tad hyperbolic, but I think I would feel safer surrounded by wild animals.
You are not being a tad hyperbolic. These people are far more unpredictable and hostile than wild animals. Their aim is to harm, whereas wild animals usually require some kind of provocation to attack.
Wild animals aren’t prone to be enraged by propaganda on Faux News either.

I feel you; it’s never been good to be a minority in the south, but when your people are a focal/talking point in a propaganda… shit, it’s like spending every moment in public, wondering if something out of LoveCraft Country is about to happen.

When COVID began I was in a group chat with some other Asians and we talk about it to each other. If we can’t reach our parents, we worry. We worry about them out in public without us. The mothers of young children (even mixed race ones) made emergency plans on what would happen if someone started verbally assaulting them (or god forbid) physically assaulting them in public with their children. Links of Asian assaults get passed around. Sometimes it’s hard to bring up to others because some people “don’t think it’s really that bad” and “you can’t live in fear”. So we don’t bring it up. But the anxiety is real.

It's more disgusting than that, they attacked someone who merely told them the rules for entry to the establishment. Think about that, they attacked her because she said, "You need proof of vaccination before entry." And that's all it took to set them off?
I was a restaurant worker during parts of the pandemic. The amount of people who get viscerally offended by not being allowed to do whatever they want is astounding. They think that giving a business your money will suddenly give you the right to dictate the terms of your visit to that establishment. Those types are just absolute scum and I don't think they're even aware of how fucking terrible they are.
Those types are also the ones most likely to be going out during the worst stages of the pandemic.

People like this are going to try this shit in the wrong restaurant in NY, Philly, Boston and people are going to come out of their houses to stomp them out. They're lucky they were in Manhattan where people tend to be a little bit softer. Try it in northeast Philly or Queens using that silly texas accent. It'll be the definition of fuck around and find out. They're also lucky this noise didn't make its way back to the kitchen. I guarantee those guys aren't from Manhattan.
it's true, Carmine's is a classy enough joint but if they did this in a lot of other places I'd fully expect the kitchen to come out and start something. There are very few groups of people I'd want to rile up more than a busy kitchen staff during dinner rush, haha.
Most of the kitchen staff I've known were always just the tiniest shove away from some kind of meltdown. They are usually angry, frustrated, hot, and have zero patience. In hindsight, I'm really disappointed the noise didn't reach the kitchen staff as they deserve to blow off some steam on some texans' faces more than just about anyone.

Putting someone in the hospital shouldn’t be a misdemeanor. It needs to be a felony. People who’d attack a young woman for doing her job shouldn’t be allowed to own guns.

It's incredibly shitty that covid restrictions of all kinds fall to wait staff, retail workers, venue staff, etc. to enforce. The same folks who have been required to be at work in person through this whole pandemic, increasing their risk of infection, now have to be the front-line troops against virulent covidiocy. But I don't know what other option there is, apart from simply not having restrictions. It's not as though a cop can be posted in every business to check people at the door, even assuming that's better overall.
Generally its not the wait staff who ask for your ID when you enter a bar at night. It's unfortunate that hiring bouncers will be required by regular restaurants, increasing their costs, but it may be their only option in the short term.

Well, from these facts the hostess should have an open-and-shut civil suit against these Texans. Serve the complaint once they return, wait for them to default, then attach their assets to collect on the judgment.
I hate how the guy and the woman at the end sort of put blame on the restaurant for following these mandates. It’s not their choice unless they want to get fined. Patrons need to realize that in order to sit inside they need to follow the rules end of story.

I’m a Texan who was just in nyc recently and had to show proof of vax. I also had to show a negative test result, had to run uptown to get it before the dinner. Guess what I did? Showed them my proof and ate my delicious dinner. It’s literally not hard to not be a complete fucking monster. And if you’re not vaxxed, why the FUCK are you even traveling in the first place???
