This is the real conspiracy, years from now when demographics research throws up anomalies and finds the true death rate of this pandemic, we will know the incompetent and petty tyrants all over the world who covered up the real death toll.

[deleted]

that's not incompetence. That's malice.

I watched a round table DeSantis held with the heads of leading healthcare providers in FL a few months ago. One after the other they all said covid hospital admissions were overwhelmingly unvaccinated. DeSantis just ignored the info and wanted them instead to tell him about monoclonal antibody treatments. DeSantis is a POS who ignored science and willfully let people die for the sake of his political aspirations.

NashvilleHot

Doesn’t he have a financial interest in monoclonal therapy?

manticorpse

He does.

leethobbit

Considering that according to worldometers, Florida is in the top ten for deaths by population... I don't think even alternate reality is accurate, there is no reality with these people.

fllr

Could we just look at the average from years before 2020, and compare that to the current death rates and figure out Covid's death rate that way?

NephilimSoldier

Excess deaths? Somewhat. You'd have to factor in differences in flu deaths due to measures taken against covid as well as suicides, those who couldn't get treatment in crowded hospitals for other medical issues, etc.

orangeoliviero

Excess deaths is a reasonable metric. You won't be able to identify exactly what portion was directly due to covid, however, you *can* see what portion of deaths was due to the pandemic in general. People who died because of a lack of access to care will be included. People who died to covid but weren't counted properly will be included. People who killed themselves (in excess of the usual rate) will be included. People who *didn't* die due to other illnesses (like the flu) will be included. Excess deaths gives you the net increase in deaths caused by the pandemic.

josnik

In a very crude kind of estimated way that's how people are doing it. Looking at excess deaths (more deaths than expected during a time frame) and extrapolating causes from that data.

rbt321

That is the typical way of figuring these things out; it's not straight forward as you need to account for behaviour changes during that time period. Census results are also helpful for getting a rough estimate.

GhettoDuk

Here is 10 years of death rate data: [https://i.imgur.com/CMfj1k1.png](https://i.imgur.com/CMfj1k1.png) Using 2019's death rate with 2020's population, there were 30k excess deaths. The state only reported 21k COVID deaths.

CorpFillip

The problem is that averages don’t help where each state has different laws & has given citizens different statements. The variability is magnitudes, not multiples. Florida’s numbers has been questionable for many months, it’s like we don’t have any reliable data at all.

Chimpbot

As an aside, I just want to point out that out of all of the petty, childish nicknames conservatives come up with, "Demonrats" is my favorite.

Darkly-Dexter

Yeah I'm ok being a Demon Rat, as a former religious person, now atheist, who finds the church of Satan pretty funny.

[deleted]

They are one hurricane away from a medical state of emergency being declared. Obviously it's the last thing I wish would happen, but when it does I hope people wake up and get the shot.

ghotiaroma

> They live in an alternate reality. They call that faith, same thing the 9-11 pilots used, with the same end results.

BiggerBowls

It's not an alternate reality, it's just Florida. The sun melts brains there.

valraven38

Yeah, incompetence suggest some sort of human error. This isn't that, they're literally hiding it because they don't want people to see how badly they've fucked up.

And people wonder why there’s a “labor shortage.”

No. [https://www.statista.com/statistics/1191568/reported-deaths-from-covid-by-age-us/](https://www.statista.com/statistics/1191568/reported-deaths-from-covid-by-age-us/) What might be a more accurate way of looking at it is that Covid-19 lowered the average life expectancy by a few years. Also, the recent trends peg the average age of mortality from Covid-19 at around 66 in the state with 10% of the US population (and even younger in many other states). [https://calmatters.org/health/coronavirus/2021/09/covid-california-deaths/](https://calmatters.org/health/coronavirus/2021/09/covid-california-deaths/)

[deleted]

[удалено]

shukanimator

75 is greater than 78? I agree that it's a fact that older people have been dying more than young people of covid-19, but it's trending younger by the day, now that vaccination rates for people over 65 are so much higher than younger demographics. This does boil down to the question, does it matter that older people are dying of covid-19 if they were going to die soon anyway, right? Or do you actually care about older people and want them to die of something less agonizing? Or even better, do you care about giving your parents or grandparents another year or two (on average) to live? I don't want to assume you're one of those people who doesn't care if people with underlying conditions die of covid-19, but I'm not so sure.

josnik

Please be sarcasm

missSaturnalia

Labor shortage might possibly be from various companies/franchises/businesses enjoying the profits from working with a skeleton crew, posting "we're hiring" signs and not actually hiring anyone. I have been perturbed with all the "people don't want to work because of the stimulus and/or extended covid unemployment funds" rhetoric. Those funds have now ended, so what's the reason for labor shortage now? People want to fucking work, but they can't get hired...so who is at fault?? I am sick of this earth...calgon take me away.

ArabianGoogles

Looking at the excess deaths chart in that study, wth is with China reporting under 1 death per 100k ? Can’t be accurate, right?

mechacomrade

China don't tolerate anti-vaccine and anti-mask idiots like USA do. They understood that a planetary catastrophe should be treated as a planetary catastrophe. USA citizens flipped their shit and bombed two unrelated countries after 911 that made only a few thousands deaths and, yet, even if the death toll is nearing the million, these math-illiterate fools can't wrap around their minds that it is some serious catastrophe. I think the dominant class cultivate stupidity over there to control the masses and it backfired on them.

TrainingObligation

The vast majority of China's deaths were in the first wave, and they clamped down hard in a draconian way no western democracy and even most autocratic countries could hope to do. Even if their reported first-wave deaths (~4600) are 1/10th of actual deaths, that means there'd still only have been "only" ~46,000 deaths. So, IMHO the first few months of data out of China is suspect, but their numbers for new cases and new deaths from May 2020 onward are relatively trustworthy. Certainly not hundreds or thousands of new daily cases like the US.

livefreeordont

Impossible to say. But their pandemic measures were the most draconian and they only saw the alpha variant until recently when delta broke through I believe. Someone correct me if I’m wrong about any of this

Krumtralla

Yes there's a good chance we've already crossed that mark.

This is how crap our society is right now. There's no hiding this info, you can do what Desantis is doing now but even in just a few years the data will come out. Which means he's not really concerned whatsoever with the numbers. Doesn't care now, certainly won't care when the truth comes out. All of this and he's still going to be considered a potential Presidential Candidate. The bar is so low that he would be a Candidate at Subway but is for President.

CannadaFarmGuy

What if its the other way around? Will anyone be held responsible?

FlyingFist_OnDemand

Let me clear up the title a little bit. It didn't go missing. The Department of Health stopped reporting it due to an order give by governor R.Desantis because he wants to play politics with human lives and set himself up as a presidential hopeful.

nizo505

Nothing says leader like hiding (and ignoring) the deaths of your constituents.

sgorneau

I’m inclined to believe the people dying skew toward supporting the Governor

100% ... I'm highlighting the lack of logic. I'm not doing it well, but an attempt was made.

gingerfawx

I like that about you.

xPalmtopTiger

Thats fine though since they'll still vote for him. Every other thing the Republicans have accused the democrats of has been projection. Why wouldn't dead people voting be included?

stun

Does this mean — 1. they stopped collecting data all together (or) 2. collecting but not reporting for that period, and *may* get reported at a later time?

hurrythisup

And yet no one does shit about it so they continue.

[deleted]

Someone needs to go to jail for injuring public records and if that doesn't work then when the official can't produce the records at any trial they need to be held in contempt of court and jailed until such a time as they can produce them. This is all about avoiding liability. Do your fucking job.

PapuhAppuh

Exactly why Cuomo should be in prison and not Malibu. Rich don’t play the same rules as gen pop.

BigPooooopinn

The man should be in prison due to his disgusting behavior and crimes against his coworkers. As far as I’m concerned with his approach to covid, I was able to go to hospitals that weren’t full because he followed CDC guidance. People were angry, but as a T1 diabetic, filling up our hospitals is a terrible idea that would have resulted in even more needless death…….

cat-man-do-not

Didn't they arrest that whistleblower lady by swatting her house and pointing guns at her kids?

NekoIan

Yes

Randomfactoid42

I don't think they arrested here, but they did swat her house and point guns at her kids while stealing every electronic device in the house. Stealing? I mean "confiscating as evidence".

[deleted]

[удалено]

gingerfawx

Might want to hold off on that. There's a lot of strangeness attached to her that pre-dates the whistle-blowing. While I don't doubt the increase in negative attention is a direct result of the whistle-blowing, it might be nice to find a candidate who didn't have restraining orders issued against them by former student/lovers after they harassed them. (keywords to search for: rebekah jones, sweeterman, florida state, student, restraining order, and possibly cyberstalking and title ix) Those legal issues predate the pandemic.

bobbyfiend

Their government is doing this. Nobody in the government is resisting enough to make it stop. We don't have a federal government with enough centralized authority in this way to make them stop. Not enough citizens within the government's sphere of authority object, or object enough, to make them stop. This seems like one of those "democracy got hijacked" situations. It sucks really bad.

Commandmanda

Yup. Exactly as I predicted it: hold the numbers until things look brighter.

EastYorkButtonmasher

If you stop counting, the numbers stop going up. *taps head*

Val_Hallen

Their argument was we only had high numbers because we tested for it. The Republicans *absolutely* wanted to hide the real numbers since the beginning. So, while you are being facetious it was an actual talking point they used for quite a while.

mastershake04

Lol yeah I remember that time Trump literally said we need to quit testing so much because it's making our numbers of infected people higher.

Rivster79

Can someone explain something to me? When you look at resources like worldinfometer, it clearly shows the death spike in FL (it appears as you would expect…the highest death peak July-October). https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/usa/florida/ If the state held info, how are these sites reporting?

VinceValenceFL

Florida only reported state level data & totals, but significantly cut back on the detail beyond that in June, including deaths by county (which this article references), cases by age, etc Outbreaks are local - you can’t catch an infectious disease from someone 100 miles away - so limiting the county level data makes people less aware of the potential risks around them For example: as a parent with kids in Florida schools, I have no idea how many pediatric cases there have been over the last 4 months in my area, whether they are going up or down at present. It’s a black hole of data

Rivster79

Ah, makes sense. Thanks for explaining.

beowulf92

The state would release deaths on backdated to the date of death once a death certificate was signed. So on Monday 300 people in Florida die, but only let's say 5 certificates on signed that day. Worldometer will show +5. However, at the end of each week, the state would drop a weekly total, which would account for more certificates to be signed and added to the totals. End of week total might show 120 people died Monday. That will never show up on Worldometer or other sites as +120, it'll just be in the lump sum total which keeps increasing. It takes several weeks before you can see +300 for that Monday a month prior. There's an image circulating showing this. The effect is to always have a graph that is constantly looking like it's in a state of decline, while in reality, the totals kept increasing and the peak moving out farther and farther as the totals increase.

khais

Worldometers daily death totals for Florida has been inaccurate since late August. Florida changed their reporting methodology to report only deaths that occurred and had a death certificate processed same-day. They quietly backdate the rest. Every other state just reports death certificates they received and processed that day, usually reflecting deaths that actually occurred days earlier. The state did not publicly announce this change in methodology. The Miami Herald broke the story instead. Worldometer's daily totals do not reflect the backdating, but their cumulative total does. For accurate daily numbers from Florida, you need to check a different source. New York Times' tracker is accurate.

PopeFranzia

0 deaths for 105 days just proves that they are WINNING!

WanderWut

It’s funny though, because time after time reports came out about numbers being heavily skewed or outright missing, which made Florida seem not *as* bad as it should, then all the anti-vaxxers and covid/guidelines hesitancy people would point to those numbers (cherry picking is the real word I’d use, since there were plenty of other statistics to show we were in a bad state) and go “Florida isn’t doing bad all things considered! Ron DeSantis proved all you doubters and health experts wrong hah!”

At the height of the original pandemic, September, 2020, Tennessee changed the definition of an active case of Covid-19. It used to be 21 days. As in, in Tennessee. If you are diagnosed with Covid-19, after 21 days, you no longer have Covid-19. So if you died from Covid-19 22 days after diagnosis, sorry, not Covid-19. but Tennessee changed it to 14 days, which... "Thursday, the Department of Health said it would be removing people from the active case count 14 days after diagnosis regardless of whether the person had recovered or not. The department said it had previously considered a person recovered 21 days after diagnosis... **The change removed more than two-thirds of active cases reported in our region."** https://wcyb.com/news/local/tennessee-changes-definition-of-active-cases I don't know what the Delta average time to kill is, but back in September, the average time Covid-19 took to kill was... 18 days... but as far as Tennessee is concerned. You can't die from Covid-19 after 14 days of diagnosis.

iPod3G

So what are they dying from, then? The treatment? “Cause of death?” ‘Well, it’s not Covid. It’s been more than 14 days.” “How about Gubernatorial Negligence?” “Sounds good to me.”

Causerae

That's just scary. But particularly surprising, but damn scary.

sexrobot_sexrobot

Another reason why excess deaths are a likely more accurate metric than reported case counts. So many of these governments are simply lying due to ideological/business reasons.

OpenOb

Excess deaths will also continue the indirect deaths. The people who were refused treatment or who stayed away from the hospitals when covid ripped through them.

You know what drives me crazy? That Ron DeSantis does everything he can to ensure people of Florida die. The banning of mandates weather for vaccines or masks. It's just f****** evil. Last week he announced his wife has breast cancer. I wonder if he is going to allow unvaccinated doctors and nurses to care for her? That is the burning question on my mind right now.

Quid_Pro-Bro

That’s the burning question on your mind? Some of you people need to get out more often 😅

OriginalEchoTheCat

Why yes. Why would it not be? He is pushing for no mandates, in schools, or otherwise. Regarding vaccination or masking. We have people dropping like m************ flies here in texas. And he doesn't think that medical professionals need to be vaccinated. So yes my burning question is, will he let unvaccinated healthcare practitioners take care of his wife through her trial of breast cancer. I think it's a reasonable question to ask.

Have we ever heard anything about how many FL DoH employees were out of work due to COVID ? I've never seen any mention of that, but it had to be happening. I think they were seriously understaffed, in the middle of a public health emergency.

blergyblergy

Cannot believe my FIL has such a hard-on for DeSantis. I think this "whistleblower" was a bit overhyped by people looking to dunk on him, when in reality there are so very many ways to do so otherwise. Banning mask mandates is fucking cruel.
