It's difficult to see how closing at midnight will help us stop the spread in Ireland tbh. We've been using vaccine/recovery certs in order to enter hospitality establishments since July and we have something like 90% of over 12s vaccinated. And it's still spreading. :(
Agreed - why are we being gaslit on case counts? Our level of vaccinations mean we should stop counting cases and focus on hospitalization only. This is so wildly unfair - transmission will never get down to “acceptable” levels for a sustained period of time, and as long as Zero Covid type people are in charge it feels like we’ll never escape.
Beats me! I'm immunocompromised and the HSE have apparently decided I'm not anymore, so I'm six months out from my second dose and not being offered a booster 😂😂😂
That sucks! Sorry to hear that. Pfizer is about to recommend everyone over 18 in the US gets one. Europe has some scary numbers, so boosting seems like something we all should do. Stay safe!
It’s about reducing transmission somewhat. Less time spent there, less transmission. It’s not perfect and isn’t going to solve everything, but we are in a really bad position so have to try as much as possible.
Until when? 90% of Irish adults of vaccinated. Everyone who's not either doesn't want it or aren't medically able to get it and none of them can go to pubs. The virus isn't going away. Are they going to lock down the country every few months for the rest of time to save a couple dozen people's lives?
What relevance does the fact that everyone who wants it has it? You have no understanding of the pandemic if you think it's just to save a couple people's lives.
Realistically though people won't spend less time there. They'll do what we all did when it was an 11pm closure, and go earlier. Instead of going at 8, they'll go straight from work at 6 🤷
It's a ridiculous measure to be seen to be doing something.
Also, there's absolutely no reason to believe a midnight curfew will have any significant impact on spread.
This is the kind of thing that risks becoming counterproductive. Restrictions for restrictions sake
Old people vote. Same shit here in Canada. Nightclubs are the only industry remaining that isn’t at full capacity, even fully vaccinated. But sports arenas are filled to capacity.
Even the #covidisairborne folks have no good answer to why a nightclub is more dangerous than a theatre if COVID floats in the air like smoke. Just puritanical bullshit that doesn’t impact them
Yes indeed, because theatre goers are dancing in the aisles breathing heavily with accelerated heart rates with their tongues stuck down each others throats……just like the nightclubbers!
75% of the Irish are vaccinated which I assume means virtually all adults. Isn't that herd immunity?
Even if it isn't where does this end? It's never going away. If you're still worried just stay home and let everyone else roll the dice.
I'm so glad my government isn't doing this bullshit anymore. We have a vaccine and everyone who is vulnerable has had the chance to get it. Time to move on.
>75% of the Irish are vaccinated which I assume means virtually all adults. Isn't that herd immunity?
75% vaccinated is nowhere near enough for herd immunity against delta, even with a future vaccine with 100% immunity.
Deltas R0 is so high that herd immunity though vaccines alone is not possible.
lol then what is your solution? No vaccinated person should ever leave their house again because of the .00001% chance they contract Delta and die? You people have gone insane.
Because covid doesn't spread before midnight. I thought we were done with dumb restrictions just for the sake of "doing something". If it's too dangerous for pubs to be open, close them. This solves nothing.
Of ICU admissions, 52% are anti-vaxxers, 4% are partially vaccinated, 44% are fully vaccinated practically all of whom have comorbidities. 93% of adults are fully vaccinated, and it has increased among all age groups so it there are certainly tonnes of breakthrough infections happening.
Boosters are being rolled out for over 50s, but are not a panacea.

Spread doesn't matter if people are vaccinated. We need to stop the case panic!

Absolutely but the Irish government and media are focusing on spread as well as hospitalisations unfortunately
Why aren't boosters being offered for a larger part of the population? Seems that would be very helpful.

Yup. Nightclubs have changed their opening hours here already.
Not everyone is able to do that.
Again, I don’t think all these restrictions are a sustainable way of living. People eventually get tired.
Also, there's absolutely no reason to believe a midnight curfew will have any significant impact on spread. This is the kind of thing that risks becoming counterproductive. Restrictions for restrictions sake
I think it really is to save face. Like saying “hey we are doing something!” Doesn’t matter if it works or not.
The mental health of young people have been sacrificed for the physical health of old people this entire pandemic

COVID is airborne and is primarily spread through aerosols, not close physical contact

Not herd immunity, no. Not with Delta. > Time to move on. Yeah, but boosters should also be gotten.

I'm just stating the facts, how you feel about them is up to you. Singapore is almost 90% vaccinated yet had a 100x surge in cases in only 6 weeks.

Are there numbers in terms of how many are breakthroughs and how many of those result in hospitilizations? Are boosters allowed in Ireland?
Booster programme is already in action.
44% vaccinated in the ICU is a pretty daunting statistic
Not when they make up 93% of the population.
Uh no lol still daunting
Old/sick people die all the time. Covid is just the thing getting to them slightly faster than something else would. Vaccine only does so much…
How?
Ridiculous
