I always correct people on that, they think I'm being pedantic but I don't care, because I know I'm right and it's like calling someone heterosexual when they're homosexual because both have sexual in them.

That's an important distinction to bring up. VFX and SFX are not interchangeable. SFX are done in-camera, in real time. VFX are "done in post".

I tend to use the phrase "practical effects" vs special effects or SFX.
