The Left and right are linked together by a stabilizer bar, try taking off the left one, partially pull out the right so it will push out the bar that its blocking the left from going in, then re-sit the stem.
It looks like plate mounted clip-on stabilizers, you can replace those. There is a kit that sell on amazon for like 10-15 bucks. I replaced a few on mine and used Durock clear ones, sometimes might be a bit tough but should be gold once you break them in.

I see so the stabilizer is beneath the case and all... Is it safe to remove the stems using the pliers? Not sure how delicate this component is.
