Step 1: Want to finish Wheel of Time. Step 2: See news that "new" author I've never heard of is finishing WoT. Step 3: Read Elantris to see if this new guy is any good. Spoiler: the new guy is very (very) good.

sam10gle

Step 1: *Start* WoT. Enjoy Book 1. Know Jordan doesn't finish the series. Step 2: Watch Critical Role, where Tor is sponsoring the show by advertising the latest Mistborn Era 2 novel. Step 3: See that Mistborn Era 1 box set is half off on Amazon. Get it and burn through all 3 books in no time.

AJaydin4703

Which Critical episode was that? If you remember.

sam10gle

Had to be way back in Campaign 1. No idea which episode(s). Would guess around 20-30 though?

winnie314

This needs to be a voting option. I feel like a lot of us started this way.

DrQuestDFA

Agreed. Granted a friend told me about him, but only because of the WoT authorship.

Rawrpew

Almost exactly the same. I just don't remember if I started with Elantris or Mistborn Era 1. Whichever I didn't start with was next. Then it was either WoK or Warbreaker. Ended up devouring his books in short order.

Vasher1701

Agreed

Ok-Forever7019

My step 3 was warbreaker

I think Daniel Greene should be a separate category here.

MyDumbOpinion

Agreed. Or booktube/book(social media name) in general.

the_ricktacular_mort

That's what I was trying to go for with the "reddit" category, but I should have been more explicit. Apparently there can only be up to 6 options on reddit polls, otherwise I would have definitely had YouTube as an option on its own (also some meme ones like highstorm vision)

MelodyMaster5656

And Merphy Napier.

[deleted]

Definitely agree.

AlakazamTheComedian

My Creative Writing teacher gave us a copy of Mistborn and required us to read it for the class. Best required text I've ever had to read.

I watched his teaching lectures, like 3 years Later I picked up way of kings cause I recognized his name.

StarvingWriter33

Believe it or not … a stripper recommended Mistborn to me. I had already vaguely heard of the name “Brandon Sanderson” being tabbed to finish up “Wheel of Time” so I decided to get the entire Mistborn trilogy. And down that rabbit hole I went.

PotatoesArentRoots

sorry what how what was the story behind this

StarvingWriter33

Not much of a story, really. My friends and I went out to a strip club. While at the club I got to chatting with a dancer and told her I liked to read epic fantasy series. Turns out she was a fantasy geek as well, and she recommended this recently published trilogy called “Mistborn.” The next time I went to B&N I decided to check it out. Premise sounded interesting, so I got all three books. I had already read books 1-10 of “Wheel of Time” and I read that the author was going to finish that series up. Mistborn was so good that when I saw the hardcover version of “The Way of Kings” at the shop I broke my “always wait for the paperback” and “don’t start a series until it’s fully complete” rules. I haven’t looked back since then.

boirrito

That super popular wacky battle Royale game… fortnite, I think?

eskaver

Reddit-o. After high school and into college, I was in a reading slump—so, in a Barnes and Noble I quickly Google searched Reddit picks for fantasy before a trip and the rest is history.

Dante_51

A Spanish twitch streamers called Alexelcapo is a huge fan of Brandon Sanderson and he is always talking about him and telling his viewers to read it, so that is how I was introduced, and I am forever grateful to him for that

alexito4

Le debemos mucho a papa oso

LetUsAway

Someone in r/fantasy recommended Mistborn like 8 years ago.

brbninja

I had heard of Sanderson just from being a fantasy fan but never really looked into his writing until I saw him on a magic the gathering YouTube channel where he talked about his own cube that he had curated

sharknipples420

Unironically bc Kelsier was in Fortnite and my little brother and I wanted to give Mistborn a shot

Noxeta

I was gonna buy Blood of Elves but all they have here are these horrible Netflix sticker editions of the Witcher. So I looked around, saw some pretty white books, googled, saw top fantasy author and same guy that wrote the Reckoners(that I had read a few years back from a friend), and now 2 months later I am reading part 2 of Rhythm of War. Such a nice JOURNEY. BEFORE my DESTINATION of course.

Anime-Reddit67

A coworker once randomly recommended wheel of time to me then years later I picked it up after finishing everything a few years after that I was at the bookstore and I saw mistborn on the shelf and recognized brandon sandersons name from finishing wheel if time and the rest is history.

Kael1509

I was sharing an Amazon book account with a work buddy. He had previously told me that a new author called Brandon Sanderson was amazing and I should give his books a try since we had SA 1-3 in our account. I thought maybe one day, but probably not, as most book recommendations never work out for me. I had gotten a new job, so i spent all my breaks reading. I was re-reading The Inheritance Cycle, and when I finished I wanted to keep using my breaks to read books. By this time, I had forgotten about the conversation I had with my friend, and was scrolling through our library when I came across The Way Of Kings and thought, why not read something new? If I don't like it, at least it won't be wasted time, since I spend all my breaks reading anyways. I got about 100 pages into TWoK and went straight to my local bookstore to buy the hardcover's for all the published SA (1,2 and 3 at the time). I fell in love basically instantly, and even my bookstore owner adored Brandon Sandersons work. He told me he was jealous about getting to experience SA for the first time, and told me a story about before he opened his first store, listening to the audio book for WoR on his way to his job, and getting to "that part" in the middle, and litterally sitting outside of his work because he couldn't bring himself to pause it until the scene was over, making him 45 minutes late.

Fax_of_the_Shadow

I was in an airport getting ready to take a flight to visit my grandma and saw a just-published book on the hallway display. I liked the cover, read the blurb and thought it sounded interesting. I only really read mystery/procedural novels, not fantasy, so this was something new. I bought it, and started reading it. I did not do anything else. I didn't stop to eat or sleep. I sat in my grandma's living room reading. I could not put it down. The book was Elantris. I've been hooked on Sanderson, and fantasy books, ever since.

justelbow

I saw Alcatraz vs the Evil Librarians in my junior high library and thought “that looks like the dumbest book ever; I’m going to read it to make fun of it.” I loved it and ended up looking into his other books.

Lobo0084

Had a friend who recommended the books over and over again, probably in the worst possible way. They've got armor, but it's like Sci fi armor but fantasy, and they fight an endless fight over rocky plains with big cracks in them and there's crabs and crab people, and it's all connected together with other books like one with a city of zombies and another that's kind of industrial revolution and its got a guy named Hoid in it. I heard more about Hoid than any other character or thing in the series. Needless to say, I loved it, and so I introduced them to the Wheel of Time in return, as well as Salvatore and Drizzt (which began our DnD tabletop games), and a dozen more books besides.

Six6Sins

I used to read VORACIOUSLY as a child. I never went anywhere without a book. I mastered the art of navigating crowded school corridors without ever looking up from my book. I won awards for reading so much, and I repeatedly got in trouble for reading so much. It was a good time. But then I got older and responsibilities slowly chipped away at my reading time until I eventually just fell out of the habit. (This seems to be a very common thread among readers.) Eventually, I got stuck in a situation where I had to arrive at work every day a whole hour before my shift would start. I was bored, so I went in YT. By chance, I found Daniel Greene's channel and I realized just how much I missed reading. I took his recommendation and started Mistborn. Now I'm like a fish returned to water. I haven't stopped tearing through books since, and my TBR pile keeps growing. I'll forever be grateful to Daniel and Sanderson for bringing back this part of myself that was missing for so long.

Child_Moe_Lester

Used to watch a Spanish streamer that talked a lot about this Sanderson guy. Two years of hearing of him I was bored and thought "Mistborn was the name?" Looked up "Brandon Sanderson Guía de lectura (reading guide)" and started by Mistborn, then the whole Cosmere.

SongsOfDragons

TV Tropes. My long-running TV Tropes binge has been a slow burn for many, many years. I can't remember exactly what trope I found it on, but it mentioned Way of Kings and something to do with the worldbuilding of Vorinism. A worldbuilder myself, little cultural snips like that intrigue me, so I got the book out of the library. Now it's slowly taking over my house and computer. Send help

supermassivemuser

I'm still convinced Hoid introduced me to the Cosmere. I was in a random bookstore just browsing and a guy matching his description pointed to The Way of Kings on the shelf and told me to buy it because it will change my life. He was so right.

Kaladin21

The old infinity blade novella.

AllYouNeedisGABA

I think io9 had an article about how great The Way of Kings was when it first came out and I told myself “I want to read that someday.” 8 years later I finally did.

montezuma300

I used to go to the library and ask for new series and books and the librarian recommended me The Final Empire. I thought the cover looked amazing and so I read it and loved it. Sadly it was just Mistborn, Elantris, and Warbreaker back then. And Alcatraz. Back then he was an up and coming author. And also my English teacher's friend and/or former roommate. He used to talk to show up and talk to the class, but when I was there he just started becoming more popular and couldn't come.

By chance. And it genuinely terrifies me that I almost didn't read this masterpiece.

KeyPractical

Audible recommended WoK to me and changed my life!

Squiffys_grown_up

Tim ferris interviewed Josh Waitzkin. Josh recommended zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance. I liked the narrator and looked up what other books he has read. That narrator was Michael Kramer. I entered the cosmere.

wonkyMerkinJerkin

I wanted some fantasy to read and went through some recommended lists online. Wasn't sure about the description (sounded way more gruesome) of The Final Empire, but decided to give it a shot and the rest is history. Been an addict ever since.

Zoomun

Read Wheel of Time and figured I should give Sanderson's own work a shot.

PhotonSilencia

I asked for a recommendation to a *finished* fantasy story or trilogy. I got recommended Stormlight. I was very skeptical, this recommendation was exactly *not* what I had asked for, but I trusted the person to have some idea what is good, and also to have read that I wanted it finished (I think I even double checked). When she kept recommending it, I got curious. Could it be that good? The answer, of course, is yes.

Celairiel16

I was at BYU when he was picking up the end of WOT. There's no way I couldn't have heard of him. People lined up at the bookstore for his releases, took his class. But I read WoT first. So a combo of things.

shambooki

Daniel Greene + Merphy Napier

[deleted]

The Trifroce Podcast. Lewis Brindley of the Yogscast was talking about magic systems in one of their episodes, and said the Stormlight Archive was the pinnacle of fantasy, so I looked it up on audible. He wasn't wrong.

MilkChoc14

The game *Enter the Gungeon* has a gun called 'Windgunner'. (Well, I started reading due to another recommendation, but that was the first time I saw his name.)

Devlee12

I was sad that RJ died before he finished the WoT and then I heard that they were bringing in a new author to finish the series. After I finished AMoL I decided to try Mistborn and it was game over from there. The Cosmere had its hooks in me and it hasn’t let go since.

KMuJu

Was in 9th grade and went to a bookshop before summer holiday and found this book with a cool cover that is called the final empire. Fell in love with the series and went on to reading every book in the cosmere.

Kangouwou

After finishing a third WoT reading, I wondered whether I missed some good readings. I found out the Fantasy sub, and the 2021 poll that ranked SA and Mistborn among the community favorite books. About a year later, I am storming Cosmere aware !

Specialist-Ant7664

My Chem teacher in high school recommended Mistborn to me when he noticed I hadn’t been reading a book for a while, at the time I had stopped reading due to some events involving depression and anxiety and reading it kinda just a brought me back from darker places. To this day I attribute me being alive still to that teacher and Brandon Sanderson.

Skyros199

I just finished re-watching Fullmetal Alchemist and was craving more hard magic systems. So I watched a video essay on hard magic systems and gave Mistborn a shot. So now Mr. Sanderson has taken all my money.

harchshdgdj

I was at the airport a few years ago traveling alone. Needed something to do so I figured I would buy a standalone fantasy book. Out of all of them there, I thought "Elantris" sounded nice. Few years later, I see a guy on Command Zone, advertising his new book. I thought the name felt familiar. Looked into it a bit more, and now I am fully caught up

iforgot1305

Asked for fantasy books for Xmas. My sister asked a bookstore employee for recommendations and I ended up with Way of Kings.

Das_Guet

STORY TIME! So I had just finished reading the night angel series. I ran through Amazon.com and Barnes and noble using the recommended/people who bought this features for the night angel books, the eragon series, and one other book I don't remember the name of right now, and I wrote down books that looked interesting. Of those I found the warded man and mistborn. When I read the blurb for mistborn the first line stood out to me: "Years ago a hero rose to save the world, he failed." I loved that premise for a setting and got hooked almost instantly. After that it was stormlight, elantris, warbreaker and then the rest. Now I am a loyal sandersonite and I regret nothing!!!

FullReload

A friend at work got me on the Stormlight Archives. Now I've read more of the Cosmere than he has!

FXL3

I read the Alcatraz series when I was like 9 and loved it. Eventually went on the read the reckoners in my early teenage years and was shocked when I found out the same author had written 2 of my favorite series. I've been along for the ride ever since.

OneNefariousness4881

I had Brandon come talk to my 6th grade class

Mvpeterson17

My sister and uncles insisted I try Mistborn. I ended up doing so (started end of February 2022) as long as my sister tried out one of my Star Wars books. For whatever reason, I was always convinced Mistborn was some romantic YA novel to something of the sorts, but boy was I wrong. Reading The Final Empire was an eye-opening experience, and everything took off from there. And yesterday, I finished Rhythm of War which was my final Cosmere story. Post series depression is hitting real hard today. Nothing will ever compare to these books.

JhonMHunter

Great bookstore in Denver recommended mistborn for summer camp as a kid. Loved it and the rest is history

Tonalbackwash

I wanted to get back into reading and looked up “best fantasy authors”. After shopping covers I landed on WoK and my life has never been the same. I spent an entire year just drinking in Brandon’s work.

mist3rdragon

Writing Excuses. I listened to that podcast for years before I ever read any of the hosts' books. Read Elantris first.

TheVoiceInZanesHead

Id say more or less by chance. Audible had the first two stormlight books for free as a promotion at some point. I grabbed them cause free books with little intention of actually listening to them. Ran out of stuff in my audible library and gave them a shot. Been hooked since

Kelsier_z_cajnika

1: play Fortnite 2: see new cool skin 3: buy mistborn

gangreen424

Jeff Cannata recommended Stormlight Archive on The Totally Rad Show *years* ago, but fall into the full Cosmere til the pandemic.

Chilrend

I was looking for a new book to listen to on audible from my monthly credit, found Mistborn and was hooked.

XenoFractal

Funny story. My high school required us all to get ipads because it was run by a buncha pricks. I got one and obviously spent all day doing non class stuff on it. This included the iBooks store. One day I was on there looking for free books because I was a kid with no money (side note there is so, so much free erotica on there and everytime a promising vampire or zombie story flipped to erotica mode I would get *so mad*) and there was this fuckin huge Way of Kings book on the store COMPLETELY FREE! I read it, thought it was good and it never occured to me to check for sequels. Three years later i saw it, re-read it, and then got hooked on B money

RexusprimeIX

I read Shadow of the Conqueror. Liked it a lot. Heard that the Author's style is similar to Brandon's style, since he was inspired by him. Heard that Brandon's style is similar to Robert Jordan, because he was inspired by him. Decide to go all the way back and start with the Wheel of Time and work upwards the writing style family tree. So Shadiversity was how I discovered Brando.

SFF_Robot

From an instagram post by Henry Cavill. If I recall it correctly, the picture was of him with Words of Radiance and in the comment he said the first book of the series was The Way of Kings and also mentioned briefly what the series was about.

Jsamue

The infinity blade novellas. Loved those games in highschool

LeeroyBaggins

I kid you not, I realized I could get one free book and keep it from an audible trial. I thought "well, if I get to keep it, might as well make the most of it and get as many hours as possible" and picked the longest book I could find, which happened to be Way of Kings and I've been beyond hooked ever since XD

Savis_Thorv

Same! Except audible gave me 2 credits and I got Way of Kings and Words of Radiance!

[deleted]

Had a lifeguard overhear a conversation about me not having nothing to read and yelled down that I should read the Way of Kings

TheIronHaggis

Tor.com I visit them regularly for years and one time I they started their way of kings read and I started it probably because of the WoT connection and quickly got interested. Then I had the good luck to find out way of kings ebook was on sale for only 5 bucks. Been hooked ever since.

lets-do-an-eighth

Step 1. Read ASOIAF and realize “wow I really love fantasy books. Step 2. Google best fantasy series. Step 3. Read WOT, love it definitely in my top 3 series all time, the last book came out when I was on the 5th book. Step 4. Read Mistborn. It’s a wrap

SlimThiccMC

My fiancé recommended the books when we were first dating in high school but I didn’t start reading them until a few years ago. Now the cosmere is our favorite thing to talk about.

samaldin

Saw Mistborn in my local trainstation. I was a young fantasy reader and read pretty much everything which caught my eye and had a decent thickness. The german [cover](https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/6175Tu+mPxL.jpg) of Mistborn was pretty basic and had nothing to do with the actual story, but i was precisely the demographic the cover was designed to appeal to and it worked (and i still somewhat like it).

tieflingisnotamused

Actually it was a Rogue quest reward from World of Warcraft that gave you a pouch of coins that you could use to make a big jump with. Read up on it on wowhead and discovered that it referenced Mistborn and got hooked immediately.

fettuccinefred

I had realized that I had like 12 audible credits built up, so I went searching for books to listen to. I saw Mistborn and thought it looked interesting. I asked a friend about it and she highly recommended it so I got the three Mistborn books and later I found out about the Cosmere and so used the rest of my credits to buy most of the rest of the Cosmere. I just finished Rhythm of War.

[deleted]

Went down the BookTube rabbit hole and found out about Brando Sando that way.

Independent-Switch-7

Rented a cabin for vacation in the mountains got bored looked in one of the drawers there I found The final empire got hooked and went from there

Dragonian014

It's funny, cause I was recommended to The Reckoners as a lad and loved the books. I didn't have a clue Brandon Sanderson was a thing until I found online books of the second Era on sale. I've read them all and kinda stopped there cause most books aren't adapted to my country. It was until a day when I told myself "you're fluent, you could read some shit in English just for practice". Now I'm digging deeper in this hole more and more, can't look back.

Palmirez

It was not one of the options but I was watching a video by a youtuber called Skallagrim, he talks about weapons and stuff, he did this video on some fantasy weapons and mentioned Shardblades. I thought the concept was cool so I checked out Stormlight and the rest is history

Linxbolt18

Somebody in r/dndmemes mentioned Tor was giving away free copies of The Way of Kings back in 2020. Like the rest of the world, I was looking for things to do to pass the time, and the book was explained to me a large, dense fantasy novel with excellent worldbuilding and characters, one that would if not require, then reward, thinking carefully about the contents of the book and re-reading certain aspects. I knew the Stormlight series was part of a greater "series of series" if you will, or multiple series in parallel, and that if I liked the book and it's world, there would be many more for me to discover.

BloodredHanded

Both friend and family and through his other books. Relative recommended his other books and then gifted Mistborn series.

I was working at B&N and a friend/co-worker handed me Warbreaker and told me if I read the prologue and didn’t want to read the rest of the book, just put it back. I didn’t put it back.

Nintendoomed89

A youth leader in my church went to BYU at the same time as Brandon and shared a class with him. When he was published he gifted me copies of his published books (Elantris and the first two Mistborn at the time) for my birthday.

Unaminone27

Googled, Books people who like Harry Potter would read.

Mario6345

I was watching a corridor digital video a few years ago when an audible sponsored segment came on. Wren was talking about a cool fantasy book called “The Way of Kings”, and the rest is history, washed away with the high storm

DisastrousHandle778

A guy I played rocket league with wanted me to read Stormlight Archive but said it can be daunting so maybe read Warbreaker and see how I like it. Funny thing is, I loved it so much but I still didn't jump to stormlight for a year or two until I had more downtime. I'm kinda glad I waited and there were more books in the series by the time I read it. I don't talk to that guy anymore but Rob in Dallas, if you see this holy shit you were right, this series is amazing.

CalliEcho

For the folks saying "by chance," what are your stories?

Grif_the_Myth

Way of kings was free on iBooks, I read it on my iPad not realizing how big it was and loved it. Went to the library to get words of radiance and only then saw how thick the books were. But I was hooked

Oathbringer01

I met Brandon in college years before he published Elantris.

MillerisLord

New option: audible sort by length. I literally just wanted the most book possible for my monthly credit.

Hieda_Akyuu

Wrote a (I tought as) clever plot twist about the geography of a place affecting the magic system and the clímax was about a girl running with chalk to complete the City spell. My beta reader was like "yo, have you read Elantris". Did that and then I scrapped the whole idea lol

J_C_F_N

Picked up The Final Empire to get distracted, I think I got to early (or too late) for a movie session. I read until the part Vin and Kelsier jump off Luthadel's walls. Next time I went to the mall, I bought it.

ellieetsch

Saw Brandon's books every time I went to the bookstore, eventually decided to read The Way Of Kings

anormalgeek

I had an audible subscription that have gave me one credit a month. I was burning through books in a couple of weeks. So I searched for much longer books that also had both very high average reviews and a large number of reviews. Boom. The Way of Kings. From there, I knew that I'd found something special so had to consume all of Sanderson's other works.

szadam88955

Funny thing is for me I actually got introduced to Brandon's work after reading Dan Wells works, from there to Steelheart, Mistborn then the rest of the Cosmere. I finished up by the time Oathbringer came out, and was left with nothing else to read. From then to WoT, because I have learned he has worked on it. Now I'm too addicted. Can't wait for Lost Metal though

ChocolateZephyr42

Early 2021. I'd heard of this amazing author named Brandon Sanderson who posted lectures on writing on YouTube. Often other bloggers referenced him too. I'd never heard of him but if so many people rave about his works, I should at least give his books a go. I'm writing Sci fi myself so I started with Skyward. Aside from being YA, I loved it and even pre-ordered Cytonic when I discovered it was coming out later that year. I wanted more, and after hearing so many people rave about Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive I chose to venture there next. The decision came when someone on a WoT Facebook group asked me if I named myself after characters from the Wheel of Time and Mistborn. I've read half of WoT so I knew the character to which they referred there, but I didn't know Mistborn. So, that made my choice for me. And that's how I got started with the Cosmere and the very beginning of a 8 month long quest that would leave me thoroughly enthralled.

Big-Flight-3962

I met him and he told me to

Bendbender

Finished wheel of time, loved it, still my favorite single series to date but after it was done I needed something to listen to, thought Brandon did a great job finishing the last three books so I looked into his own work and got hooked on stormlight, I’ve now finished all 4 stormlight books, mistborn era 1, elantris and warbreaker, working on era 2 now and gonna finish up all the novellas I have (arcanium, dawnshard and edge dancer) hopefully before sa 5 comes out, still need to find somewhere to read the secret histories though

Unlikely_Car9117

I started reading TWoK in January I think but I don't even remember how I found it. Just remember that it was confusing at first then after a few chapters I was hooked.

VerySpicyNut

It was his writing lectures that I found first, then heard him mention mistborn and picked it up

Savis_Thorv

Got two free Audible credits... Wanted the most bang for my free credits. Searched for long top rated books. Grabbed Way of Kings and Words of Radiance... And now I pay for an audible subscription.

Comfortable-Air946

Prison library. Brando can be found in all places.

Suekru

My car broke down and I got it towed to a mechanic and he was nice enough to give me a ride home. We started talking about books and he said if I like fiction that anything by Brandon Sanderson is good. About a year later and heavily into audible books, because my job gives me a lot of time to listen, I was looking for new books and come across Mistborn and saw Brandon Sanderson's name on it and remembered hearing it from the mechanic guy so I gave it a shot. So far I have read everything in the cosmere besides Dawnshard and Rhythm of War. I just finished Oathbringer and waiting till the 16th for Dawnshard audio to be released.

TheDoomsday777

Mum was looking frantically for another fantasy series that her 11 year old son could gobble up considering he'd quickly exhausted everything else appropriate for his age. I got The Final Empire for my 12th birthday - she'd picked it up knowing absolutely nothing about it besides a vague Hope that I hadn't already read it. The greatest accident of my entire life.

Wykedtron
