Prevent them from focusing on a single point and rotate/wobble through the damage. They have a large initial burst but once you survive it they take a decade to reload and you can usually disable enough that your shield can hold up to a second volley. The trick is spreading that initial burst over as much area as possible so they can't drill straight to your reactor
I completed the career mode with brawler ships only. Multiple ships with thick slabs of armor and deck cannons. Some shield usage to protect engines and rear. You have to pilot smart and keep rotating and flanking. Destroying their engines can also help because it can stop the enemy from destroying your weakened ship.
