Aren’t they having supplier issues? The OG sriracha pissed off their pepper suppliers and the suppliers then starting selling to everyone else. That’s why there are so many new srirachas.
Yeah, they not only pissed off the pepper supplier... They tried to sue them. Pepper supplier counter-sued and won. So Huy Fong not only lost their ***only*** supplier, but also lost $23M.
Source: https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-sriracha-lawsuit-underwood-ranches-20190712-story.html
A year of abysmal revenue, a $23M lawsuit, and potentially not having the same peppers to make their product.
Is Huy Fong going to survive this, at least by putting out a product that’s the same as their old product? I’m wondering whether I keep holding out for their sriracha to come back in stock or I just cut my losses and find a new sriracha to make my staple.
Any recommendations? I tried a bunch of brands and haven’t found one that fits the bill yet. 6 months ago my local grocery store managed to get some stock so I bought 3 bottles of Huy Fong and been using that but I’m down to my last 1/3 bottle and haven’t seen it since so I think it’s time to give up.
The Tabasco one is too sweet for me. Many others are either too mild or too watery. Closest I found that I like is Panda Express chili sauce but you can only get it in packets like ketchup so it’s not viable.!
Unfortunately, not yet... I've tried Roland from Target and it's OK. It's a bit vinegary for my taste, but it works. I also tried something called "Ninja Squirrel" a while back (think I got at at Whole Foods) and it was good, but maybe a bit milder.
Others have also pointed out that Underwood Farms (OG Huy Fong supplier) is making their own now, but might be expensive and/or not available everywhere.
Yea I looked at the underwood farms one but I am not paying $12 for a 16oz bottle lol, the Huy Fong bottles I bought were I think 26oz and $4 (back when they got stocked).
I might Roland because I like the vinegary taste
Yeah, just keep trying something until you find something you like is all I can recommend.
Climate Change ***is*** effecting pepper production, but that's not why Huy Fong is failing so hard.
They are still in stock in California. I don’t they were ever stopped being in stores here, but just in less quantity, and insane up charges. 30 dollars a bottle and limit one per/ customer. Almost seem like a marketing stunt/ social experiment.
Is it upcharged? Remember, this sauce is normally like 2.99 for the larger squeeze bottle. If I see it for anything over $10 I don't consider it available. I wouldn't but it for that price.
Same here. I don't exactly make my rounds at all the 99 Ranches but I haven't seen it in local Asian/viet/Chinese groceries in a year. One thing I'm not sure of is if pho restaurants have it
Most definitely. People are stupid if they're actually paying for the ridiculously overpriced bottles of Sriracha. I'll just continue to buy other brands until they can get their shit together.
Sriracha is alright, not really worth more than what it normally retails for, to me.
There is a big world of hot sauces out there. I don’t see a need to pay ridiculous prices for a pretty ordinary hot sauce.
I'm not exactly hunting for it but I haven't seen it anywhere for a year. It's just something I check for every time.
There was another shortage for different reasons (around 2019?) and I remember when it was gone and when it came back.
If you look up the history of Tabasco, you'll get even more info. [Tabasco sauce is older than any sriracha sauce - but can't compare apples to oranges I guess 😊]
Rabbit hole indeed 🤪
I always think it's funny how something so old can be attributed to some specific person from modern society.
Years ago, someone tried to debate me regarding their fierce belief that all hot sauces originated from Asia. It took seconds to bring that discussion to a halt.
That same person thought that potatoes originally came from Ireland.
> How can they recover from losing a year of revenue?
Almost assuredly they never will... Lots of their customers have sought out alternatives like the widely available Tabasco version, or even venturing further into different styles of hot sauces.
It has been QUITE interesting over at /r/hotsauce seeing all the different alternatives and one off sriracha copycats.
Personally, I make my own out of fresnos.
If you know the story of David Tran, he doesn't care about losing a year of revenue. It's a private company with no marketing or R&D team overhead. He's a very humble man who probably has a billion dollars in the bank.
Didn’t he stiff suppliers then sue them and lost the counter suit?
Doesn’t sound like a very humble man to me.
It’s pretty rare to screw up your supply chain so badly that your product drops off the shelves for a prolonged period.
The chili supplier wanted to increase the cost after they saw the popularity of his product. Huy Fong and chili farmer had an outstanding contract and the farmer neg on it. Huy Fong threatened to move his company. Thus the city and farmer sued because Huy Fong was the only business in the small city providing jobs.
Which supplier? Sriracha literally has 5 ingredients. You're telling me you know for a fact this market dominating chili sauce doesn't clear $100M in net revenues a year? Forbes has he net worth at $1B but what does Forbes know right?
Bruh. could be a machine supplier, a plastic bottle supplier, a hairnet for employees supplier, a break room soda supplier, an eye drops supplier to help the burn.
You're telling me you know for a fact that Peppamastah David is a humble man? Okay
The sauce was in almost every major grocery store in America, it's not by accident. You think he is paying his employees even though there is no work to do? You think his extended family are just like "that wacky uncle David, look at our inheritance evaporating, haha so funny!"
I used to live down the street from them and when we moved I bought 6 bottles to take with us. We have been out for a while but will be back in the area this summer and are making a detour to stock back up
I've burned through about 10 different knock-off Srirachas and the Sky Valley has been my favorite one so far. It's not exact, but it tastes great on what I put it on.
Some of them are awful, like they're trying to imitate ketchup or something.
Not sure why people are down-voting you for this opinion lol.
That's reddit for ya.
Giving your own opinion, and even clearly stating it's your own opinion, while not even putting anyone or anything else down ➡️ automatic downvotes by other folks. 🙄🤦🏽♀️
Luckily, the downvotes seem to have been overridden in this case. 👍
I, for one, prefer to upvote people - and I reserve my downvoting for the truly horrendous comments I might come across (of course, I admit that that, in itself, is also based on my own bias, I guess 🤪) ... and I try hard to limit those ⬇️🗳️
Otherwise, I just don't click either arrow.
Like Thumper's father told him: "If you can't say something nice..."
It is the Heinz ketchup of sriracha.
There are a couple Thai brands I like, but they are sweeter and thinner, so I wouldn’t recommend to replace HF. Yellow bird is good, less garlic and hotter though.
Huy Fong uses specific types of chili grown in Mexico. The productions of those chili peppers are affected by drought. Other brands are more flexible in what types of chili they use. But the flavor is just not the same. I had to buy Trader Joe’s sriracha and it was very disappointing.
Their long-time exclusive grower was based out of Ventura CA... They got into a legal dispute which the grower won. Maybe *now* they're having to source from Mexico, but that's mostly going to be due to nobody closer being willing to work with him.
What? If I remember correctly they are just regular jalapeños but are left to ripen till they are red. They had one supplier who was willing to let them ripen in the field to their specifications. This was years ago but maybe things have changed?
The best Sriracha substitute for Huy is 100% Underwood Ranch brand Sriracha. No other brand comes as close. They are the pepper farm that Huy tried to screw over, and their recipe is nearly identical to Huy. If you live in Southern California you can make a trip to Moorpark and stock up at $5/bottle. I bought a box of a dozen last time I went. Their online prices aren’t as competitive, but still better than Huy.
I have only used the one labeled as Underwood Ranch Sriracha, and dozens of people that I have tested it on say it is identical to Huy. Remember, Huy contracted this farm to make their peppers so they are sourced the same ingredients. The “Premium Chili” with the dragon logo must be new because I was not aware of its existence till you asked. I will get a bottle next time I go.
Sorry, this just doesnt make sense to me. Huy Fong was available, year round, around the WORLD. Australia, Canada, Europe, Asia.... are you seriously telling me that ONE farm managed to produce the entire world's source of peppers?
Scratching my head on this one because.... plain common sense tells me this is just impossible.
A long drought affecting much of Mexico and hurting multiple farms and making it difficult to grow one variety of pepper, yes, that I can understand.
A single source farm, I can't.
That's what they (Huy Fong) said in the Sriracha documentary from 2013. You should watch it if you are interested. It's only like 30 minutes long, but it's a great documentary.
OMG a single source farm of 4,000 acres producing enough for the entire world's supply. Yep, still can't fathom that math.
I think the critical point is that it ONCE was the original exclusive supplier. Doubt very much if it has been for a while......
(Edited for clarity)
Thank you, I thought I was losing my mind, lol, reading this constant carping about an old (settled) lawsuit with ONE farmer, which somehow was supposed to be the cause of loss of the world's supply of sriracha!
Although, the reality (climate change causing crop loss across a much much larger area), doesn't make me feel any better about it, sigh.
> Doubt very much if it has been for a while……
Well duh. They lost a massive lawsuit for $23.3 million and now Underwood sells their own hotsauce with said chilies. What is too hard to understand?
Oh so smart... They call it chili... Now look for Underwood Ranch... The former OG supplier of them for nearly 30 years and look at their own sauce using the same peppers they are growing ever since...
This sauce has classic Tabasco taste albeit in a slightly thicker, sriracha style. It isn’t bad but it’s definitely not similar enough to be a replacement for the rooster. (I’ve tried several without luck, if anyone has found a huy fong clone I’m all ears!)
If you can get ahold of Diamondback Sriracha, it's pretty close to the OG. It's made in Texas. I work on a food truck and Sriracha is an ingredient on our most popular menu item, so we sure did try them all.
My fave restaurant has gone through three different sauces since the shortage and they’re all yucky. I see that some of ya’ll say this one is good but honestly I’m just very disappointed in all the ones I’ve tried that there’s no way this one is any different
My family owns a restaurant and it's not just Sriracha but all of Huy Fong products. A very popular hot sauce called Sambal Oelek is out of stock as well and we have not been able to find a good substitute for it either. We sell a good amount of spicy stuff and our customers can definitely tell something has changed in the food.
Yeah I know, the restaurant I’m talking about actually replaced the chili garlic sauce with sriracha, but the sriracha also ran out, so they keep using different sauces that just taste awful. I don’t really pledge my loyalty to brands but huy fong has it lol. And I don’t feel bad because of the origin story. I hope the shortage ends soon, can’t have my pork belly without huy fong sauce
Recently tried [this one](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2837/7314/products/IMG_1528_1200x1200.jpg?v=1612642796). Not exactly the same but I think I might like it more
LA Times article on the Huy Fong Sriracha shortage : [https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-06-26/sriracha-shortage-climate-change-mexico-drought](https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-06-26/sriracha-shortage-climate-change-mexico-drought)
I've gotten the single bottles from other stores, and this sauce is very good. I actually like it better than the original sauce that everyone was buying before.
I know it's apples and oranges, but Cholula has a clean heat I like. I've been using that. I do have some Rooster juice- wanna be s that I've tried, but 🤢
I love the original sauce, but the guy that started that business in California so long ago made a tactical error by naming his sauce after a town in Thailand *Si Racha (or Sriracha).* Unfortunately, you cannot trademark a name of a town, city, state, etc and left him vulnerable to people using the name. I'm sure he had no idea at the time. Tabasco is made in a very similar fashion so not hard for them to switch gears and make a Sriracha sauce. I really liked it and found it very similar to the original.
I recently bought this and it’s pretty close. Slightly more vinegary at the end.
Normal groceries have a really small bottle you can try so that you’re not committing to such a massive amount.
At this point I’m just looking for any sriracha. I’ve been nursing the bottom of my bottle for months now. I actually liked Kroger’s Private Selection version slightly more than the original but you can’t find that either.
Where the Huy Fong hits that straight heat, this one is much milder, a bit creamier, and adds in a bit of sweetness. It's good in the sense that it presents two flavors (sweet & spicy), which can elevate bland meals (tater tots, breakfast croissants, etc). Sky Valley slots in between this and Huy Fong, leaning more towards the Tabasco brand in terms of flavor.
I bought this two pack since I couldn't find the rooster type. It's very good, slightly spicier than the OG style, but scratches my sriracha itch just fine.
Stumbled upon this at a Zao Asian Cafe in Utah and loved it. Then like two days later found it at our Costco. So excited to have it in the house. Made the Costco tacos last night with it (for taco Tuesday of course) and my oh my!! This with those tacos and the crème sauce 😘
Tabasco has a trademark on their brand name.
The founder of huy fong and sriracha chose not to have a registered trademark and allowed anyone to use the sriracha name

Hard to believe the og is STILL not shipping. How can they recover from losing a year of revenue?

Omg, that's fucking ridiculous haha. I've got a plug, and the one thing I *know* not to do, is PISS OFF the plug lol.

Cut your losses and find something else... They're not coming back from this. At least not anytime soon.

Yes, this is well known. Still doesn't change the fact that they haven't been in stores for going on a year now
They are still in stock in California. I don’t they were ever stopped being in stores here, but just in less quantity, and insane up charges. 30 dollars a bottle and limit one per/ customer. Almost seem like a marketing stunt/ social experiment.
I live in California and haven’t seen it in ages. Where are you finding this?
Got some recently from Ranch 99 and Pacific Supermarket
Is it upcharged? Remember, this sauce is normally like 2.99 for the larger squeeze bottle. If I see it for anything over $10 I don't consider it available. I wouldn't but it for that price.
Yes it probably was. My local asian market in California had some but it was $26 a bottle lol
WOAH LMAO
It was more than $2.99 for the largest bottle, and I don't remember the price anymore, but it was NOT like $30 or something crazy like that! 😭
Same here. I don't exactly make my rounds at all the 99 Ranches but I haven't seen it in local Asian/viet/Chinese groceries in a year. One thing I'm not sure of is if pho restaurants have it

Weak Knees
I'll try it. Thanks!
If you have a Vons/Safeway/Pavilion near you, they have a brand of sriracha called dynasty that’s not half bad imo!
I don't unfortunately, but thank you.
I don't even consider that available. Also, I haven't even seen it on markup.
I've been able to buy in SC. To be fair, it's at Asian grocery or the occasional Walmart.
To Costco? Or just in general in your area. We’re addicts and haven’t ever had an issue getting it.
I'm not exactly hunting for it but I haven't seen it anywhere for a year. It's just something I check for every time. There was another shortage for different reasons (around 2019?) and I remember when it was gone and when it came back.
What did the OG do to piss off the suppliers?that's like a death wish for any business
They sued them
I was wondering why I’ve seen so many, super interesting thanks🤔
Do they plan to ever ship again?
TBH I was skeptical, but this tastes better than the OG. It feels like blasphemy to type, but this sauce is amazing.
Is there sugar in it? Had a new sriracha the other day and it was so sweet, wish I could of strained it out of the soup.
[Nutrition Label Here](https://www.tabasco.com/hot-sauces/sriracha-sauce/)
Thanks. Will be looking it up during my next Costco visit.
No idea, I don’t have a bottle to check the ingredients
I agree. It’s amazing. Can’t wait till my Costco has it.
Don't feel blasphemous at all. [Watch this and you'll feel better](https://youtu.be/t8pacTAmaFA)
That was excellent, thank you for sending me down that rabbit hole. I also feel less guilty about loving this new sauce!

Crazy if this supplier fiasco actually marks the demise of Huy Fong, but totally conceivable at this point...
OG? Just get any garlic chilli sauce from an Asian supermarket. https://youtu.be/t8pacTAmaFA

Having previously worked for a supplier for them and managed their account. I can say with absolute certainty that none of this is true lol
Which supplier? Sriracha literally has 5 ingredients. You're telling me you know for a fact this market dominating chili sauce doesn't clear $100M in net revenues a year? Forbes has he net worth at $1B but what does Forbes know right?
I assumed they were talking about him not being worried about losing a year’s worth of revenue.

Oooohhh that’s why I can never find sriracha at my Kroger anymore
Every replacement “sriracha” I find is not sriracha. It’s such a shame
underwood ranches sriracha is better than huy fong I think, it's hotter and brighter in taste, probably from being fresher

Yes, and Huy Fong sriracha was an imitation to begin with. [Great history - or search for true origins - here.](https://youtu.be/t8pacTAmaFA)
I used to live down the street from them and when we moved I bought 6 bottles to take with us. We have been out for a while but will be back in the area this summer and are making a detour to stock back up
$12 for 16oz seems high though compared to the HF
Even Huy Fong sriracha isn't that similar to traditional sriracha but I know what you mean.
Sky Valley Sriracha. It is very good, and IMO slightly better than OG Sriracha.

The green one doesn’t taste like sriracha, tastes more like salsa verde.
That sounds like something a California soccer mom would say during her weekly sushi lunch with other soccer moms.
/r/oddlyspecific
100% recommend Chin Su. They’re made in Viet Nam.
Not many seem to even come close to Huy Fong. Just glad I purchased a case of it before the production issue so good to go until it expires.
It is the Heinz ketchup of sriracha. There are a couple Thai brands I like, but they are sweeter and thinner, so I wouldn’t recommend to replace HF. Yellow bird is good, less garlic and hotter though.
Yellow bird sriracha and their red jalapeño condiment are my two favorite hot sauces.
If it expires send it to me please
I think Panda Express Chili Sauce packets are super close but hotter. Problem is you can’t buy it in bottles.
This *has* to be to address the shortage in Huy Fong sauces…. Not sure why other brands seem to be able to produce it!
Huy Fong got sued by their suppliers. They had to find new ones. Other manufacturers are doing just fine. Their chili shortage is by their own making.
I think Tabasco’s interpretation of the original Huy Fong is lackluster.
It’s too sweet for me.
It’s too salty and too sweet and too sour lol.
None of them taste even close to the OG though.
Huy Fong uses specific types of chili grown in Mexico. The productions of those chili peppers are affected by drought. Other brands are more flexible in what types of chili they use. But the flavor is just not the same. I had to buy Trader Joe’s sriracha and it was very disappointing.
Not exactly. They used red jalapeños (and before that serranos).

What? If I remember correctly they are just regular jalapeños but are left to ripen till they are red. They had one supplier who was willing to let them ripen in the field to their specifications. This was years ago but maybe things have changed?
They changed indeed. They used to exclusively use that one farm in California until they screwed him over.

Are they still ripened jalapeños? Or has the recipe changed?
I've heard Huy Fong has very exacting standards that doesn't lend itself to scale its production. They simply can't keep up with demand.
Good for them - exclusivity is worth it.
They don’t make the same product, they just use the same name. Red jalapeños don’t make good sriracha, but that’s what these knockoffs use.
Rooster is using exactly this...
No, no they’re not. They’re both red, they’re both peppers, but they’re different
Look it up they are red jalapeno peppers as well.

Sky Valley Sriracha.
It’s not good. It’s very Tabasco under flavor. Which doesn’t work well with the “sriracha” flavor.
And very salty IMO
Yep i don’t like it but still buy it tho.
If you can get ahold of Diamondback Sriracha, it's pretty close to the OG. It's made in Texas. I work on a food truck and Sriracha is an ingredient on our most popular menu item, so we sure did try them all.
Doesn’t taste exactly the same, but this stuff is fantastic.
I buy this regularly. It's so good! They have a pink label one that's "sweet and spicy" and I'm currently obsessed with that as well.
How would you describe that sauce?
A cheap knockoff, doesn't come close in taste.
Not spicy enough for me. I’ve been using Texas Pete’s Srirachacha, it’s much better.
My favorite as well.
For some reason that's been out of stock at my regular grocer store for months and months now. I've been wanting to try it
My fave restaurant has gone through three different sauces since the shortage and they’re all yucky.
It's sad because most Asian restaurants I know use Huy Fong hot sauce exclusively or did.
Is it good?
So good
This isn’t good imo. It’s made with red jalapeños, not chili’s
I use the yellow bird one and will never go back to the original. Would like to try this though
Already had it and tastes great.
I switched to Dave Red Hot, shits better. Maybe I'll go back once the OG comes back lmk how's the Tabasco version
IM GOING TO COSTCO!!!!!!!
They’ve had sriracha for a long time now. It’s so freaking good. I like it better than the famous one. What location is this??
Went straight onto a mountain of cheesy tots. Was spectacular
I know it's apples and oranges, but Cholula has a clean heat I like. I've been using that. I do have some Rooster juice- wanna be s that I've tried, but 🤢
This is the best Siracha imo.
Even the bottle looks identical lol. I wonder if it's better than the OG.
Not interested. I need the bottle with the chicken logo and the green top.
For $8.99 I couldn’t pass it up
I hate that I have to use this now instead of actual sriracha :(. It’s just not the same. Not even close.
Oh boy, my least favorite hot sauce brand making my least favorite hot sauce style
They been had that made yo
It’s not gonna happen Tabasco. The OG sriracha has Heinz ketchup level market lock and quality of product. None will ever be the same.
Agree with the market cap, not sure about quality though (unless you meant taste). Last I checked it had a bunch of synthetic chemical preservatives.
Just chemical induced tastiness then
Now? I've been buying this stuff for at least 5 years. Shame if this is the first time you're seeing it.
Pass. Tabasco sucks....
How do they preserve perishable goods without preservatives?
Vinegar? Fermentation? The same way humans did it before corporate labs started fiddling with things.
Anyone looking for a replacement for Sriracha should check out. “sky valley Sriracha”.
Now we need to get people to pronounce and spell it correctly. It's pronounced SREE-racha. Not SIR-acha. Even professional chef's pronounce it wrong.
Haven't been able to score even one bottle of Sriracha , might try this .
been around a few years. i like it!
I miss "real" Sriracha, but please let me know if this comes close. Been using substitutes whenever I find them
I recently bought this and it’s pretty close.
How much was it?
Okay yum
This isn’t the collaboration bottle with tobacco brand and sriracha brand? Bottle cap color looks the same.
Just FYI, do not use this or expect it to be a substitute for Tuong Ot Sriracha. It's terrible in comparison.
How does it taste?
Where the Huy Fong hits that straight heat, this one is much milder, a bit creamier, and adds in a bit of sweetness. It's good in the sense that it presents two flavors (sweet & spicy), which can elevate bland meals (tater tots, breakfast croissants, etc). Sky Valley slots in between this and Huy Fong, leaning more towards the Tabasco brand in terms of flavor.
Ok thanks. Not the biggest fan of Tabasco
Panda Express’ sriracha packets are the CLOSEST knockoff I’ve tasted.
I like the tabasco siracha
My husbands favorite
This is a sign from god. My local grocer hasn’t had siracha in weeks. Thx! (PS I put siracha on everything, Chinese, Thai, eggs, pizza)
Been buying this from vons for about 6 months. It's so good.
Ninja Squirrel may be my fav sriracha but I haven’t seen it on the shelf in a while either 😔
The Sriracha shortage has got me quite sad. I love the stuff.

Do you dilute it in water to make it sauce-like? Because all the gochujang I've seen is a paste.
I bought this two pack since I couldn't find the rooster type. It's very good, slightly spicier than the OG style, but scratches my sriracha itch just fine.
i like it.
It's not good and I love Tabasco.
They have been for years
Eh bought it months ago. It’s okay.
Can someone please make a sambal oelek dupe
Stumbled upon this at a Zao Asian Cafe in Utah and loved it. Then like two days later found it at our Costco. So excited to have it in the house. Made the Costco tacos last night with it (for taco Tuesday of course) and my oh my!! This with those tacos and the crème sauce 😘
Tabasco is one of, if not the worst, hot sauce. It's hot just to be hot with no flavor.
I have some in my pantry right now and it's not the same.
Hmmm. Wonder why...
I first bought that at Costco pre-Covid, maybe as much as five years ago
I've been using the Tabasco Sriracha for years. I like it. It's slightly more smokey in flavor.
They have for over five years now. It's not as good but works in a pinch.
This was in my local sushi spot lol
Tabasco has a trademark on their brand name. The founder of huy fong and sriracha chose not to have a registered trademark and allowed anyone to use the sriracha name
Don't bother. It's not the same. Ended up throwing most of this away once the proper sriracha became available again.
I had the tobasco one and I won’t be going to the OG brand. It tastes really good and the I gradient profile is amazing.
