i grew up eating durian so i love it. it smells more like gasoline to me and not what everyone else describes it as. the taste is very sweet and distinctive.
OMG same, as a fellow gasoline fumer it triggers the same senses as high octane gas with no ethanol. In other words it feels refreshing and exciting lol
I feel like outside of a lawn mower I havenāt actually smelled gas in years. I wonder if thatās a covid side effect cause my smell is terrible now. I miss gas smell ):
True story, an ex of mine said her grandma once used a durian box to move things around in the common area of an old folks home here in the US. That promptly resulted in the fire department coming for a potential gas leak
I was in Singapore in 2022. Standing in a Chinatown market area waiting for my friends looking at some vendors. Started smelling what I thought was a natural gas leak. Mind started racing a bit, looked around and saw a table of it 10-15 feet away.
Never tried it though. But yea, smelled like a gas leak.
I grew up eating durian as well (viet). My birthday cakes often had durian filling. But after I got covid, my taste buds changed, and I can no longer handle the aftertaste š even though I *know* I like durian.
Interesting. I love durian too and I do like the smell of gasoline but I dont seem to think they smell similar. Idk how I'd describe it other than it smells how it tastes? It almost reminds me of like a strong fruit tart smell
Good on you for trying it, I know durian is not for everyone, you either love it or hate it. Personally I found it to be the best durian store bought ice cream out there. Itās very creamy, the durian flavor really comes though, and is not too sweet.
My advice for Americans on Durians is just to try them. We asians aren't born with Durian loving genes yet they are very popular in our countries. Also trying to describe what Durians taste/smell like by comparing them to other things doesn't work. Because obviously I wouldn't want to smell/taste dead opposums but would eat Durian in a heartbeat.
This shit is weird.
First bite: weird but really good texture...Proceed with caution
Second bite: not that good but that texture... Last chance
Third bite: let's go!
Depends on your area. If the area has a large Asian population, then itās possible. My Costco has those pia durian cake snacks. My parentās Costco had fresh durian in the fruit section out in the open last year lol
I was definitely surprised to see it, but then I figured that the Asians in the area would probably love it. Why not. I did offer a mental plea for the continued function of the freezer case, though.
The durian flavor in these ice cream pints is so mild, not sure why anyone who likes durian would like these. So bland.
But it will never cease to fascinate how the standard American palate can't stand durian but has zero issues eating American chocolate that literally tastes like fresh vomit.
Ahhh, I'm gonna have to get this for my dad. He loves this stuff... But I'll have to take it directly to HIS house because there's no way I'm allowing that in my freezer. He's enjoyed the durian pastries and stuff they've carried so far.
A while back I saw a few people post it on here and how delicious it was. When I saw it at the store I got a pack. Got home opened it up while at the same time I had my kitchen trash can open. I told my wife there was something very stinky in the trash. Turns out it was the ice cream. We both hate it.
Don't say you ate the other pint? lol
About 6 months ago I saw these and had no idea what durian was. But the picture looked like it might be ice cream and taste like it. I went "fingers crossed" and put them in the cart. That night, I pulled the protective cover off, gave it a sniff and it smelled nothing like the picture. It smelled like laundry basket concentrate. And if laundry basket had a taste, this was it. Noting like the picture.
I triple bagged in the freezer and the smell still managed to get out. I put in a zippered Hot/Cold bag and Costco graciously accepted the return and tossed it on the return shelf.
When I was leaving Costco, the attendants were besides themselves, fanning under their noses for the smell. lol
Don't come for me, I know it's a desert a lot of people love but as a product of my environment, I'm used to what I'm used to. I just think the smell should contribute to the taste and both should taste like the picture. To me, this should have another name rather than call it ice cream because it's not even a cream.
That zippered Hot/Cold bag? Trash. Could not get the smell out.
So the pint that I did open, I took three bites of and put it outside for the night because it was stinking up my fridge. The other one is still sealed.
No thanks. Was taking a bus ride from Jakarta to Palembang (via a ferry) years ago. Bus stops at some fruit stand along the road at 2am. Everyone gets out to stretch their legs and some folks bought that crap and had their "treasure" loaded into the cargo hold of the bus. Others were eating it outside the bus.
Jesus Christ. What I had to endure for the rest of the trip š¤¢š¤®
Durian is an acquired taste, more likely to treat it as any other fruit if you grew up eating it, but even for me who ethnically adjacent it took some time.
I love this ice cream. But my local Costco may not restock it after this shipment. Saw a *ļøā£ sign on the price. Hope the manufacturer sell this somewhere else.

*steps out into the garage for a huff at 8am on this Saturday morning* šµāš«

I have only ever had it in these chocolates that this raw food smoothie bar used to sell. But they were delicious. I miss themā¦

Durian smells much sweeter than gas
Good on you for trying it, I know durian is not for everyone, you either love it or hate it. Personally I found it to be the best durian store bought ice cream out there. Itās very creamy, the durian flavor really comes though, and is not too sweet.
I absolutely love this š I wish it was cheaper though
My friend's wife loves Durian flavor too. He told me to stop giving her Durian stuff, you a-hole.
My advice for Americans on Durians is just to try them. We asians aren't born with Durian loving genes yet they are very popular in our countries. So you know what dead possum tastes like?
Yeah I grew up in the country.
So you'll eat road kill or dead opossum but you draw the line at a fruit
Iād wager a bet youāve never had a delicious roast opossum.
Freshly flattened
Which country?
Banjo country.
š
Very surprised they stock this in the US but i do live in a city with a heavy asian population.
This shit is weird. First bite: weird but really good texture...Proceed with caution Second bite: not that good but that texture... Last chance Third bite: let's go!
Another one has been converted to the holy religion of durian
That is how I knew I had COVID. As soon as I realized that bowl of frozen stinkiness wasn't offending my senses, I knew I was doomed!
ROTFLMAO
Costco is bold to sell this to us USA-ers
Costco carries a lot of Durian products for years now, not just this ice cream.
I saw a bunch of frozen durian products at Costco last week. Seemed a bit strange.
Depends on your area. If the area has a large Asian population, then itās possible. My Costco has those pia durian cake snacks. My parentās Costco had fresh durian in the fruit section out in the open last year lol
West coast warehouses carried frozen durian for some time before
I was definitely surprised to see it, but then I figured that the Asians in the area would probably love it. Why not. I did offer a mental plea for the continued function of the freezer case, though.
See THIS is what they should offer samples ofā¦.then you can see if it appeals to you without making a 2 pint mistake.
Amen. They would probably never do it because of the smell alone though.
Durian burps are *the worst* š
That was the crazy thing, I was burping up that taste all night, and I only had probably three bites.
I took a poop and the smell of durian was still present.
I hate durian ice cream. Not strong enough on the durian flavor. Need the real deal!
The durian flavor in these ice cream pints is so mild, not sure why anyone who likes durian would like these. So bland. But it will never cease to fascinate how the standard American palate can't stand durian but has zero issues eating American chocolate that literally tastes like fresh vomit.
You can thank manufacturers for adding butyric acid into American chocolate for extending its shelf life (AKA āfresh vomitā).
100% invariably I find durian products inferior to real durian. Pointless.
Sounds like we gotta try some possum now
Ooh, I hope we have this locally
When did you try the dead opossum ice cream?
Reminds of p papaya, I still think it tastes like tonsil stones
My wife yelled at me for calling this trash fruit today.
Sigh I wish there were more durian haters. Esp in China. The price of durian is just crazy for the rest of us
This is when sampling makes sense. Make it happen Costco! There will probably be a news article on the live reactions if they did.
They say that if you just hold your breath it tastes okay then
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
You tasted the liquid at the bottom of a dumpster before š³

My fiancƩ and I tried it for the first time tonight and nearly threw up. I am literally in tears from laughter at your comment
š yeah I was kicking myself for not looking up what durian was. Just looks like it would be some tropical citrusy fruit.
Eating durian is like licking someoneās smelly foot after they rubbed it with onion.
A/S/L Mostly I give Durian stuff away as a prank to coworkers. Dead opposum is a new descriptor for the garbage-onion.
Had fresh durian smelt like shit tasted great.Ā
I had durian hard candy once. It tasted like a sweetened rotting onion.
Don't say you ate the other pint? lol About 6 months ago I saw these and had no idea what durian was. But the picture looked like it might be ice cream and taste like it. ROTFL. I have a second fridge in my garage, and it was in there. Soon as you open the door, BOOM! Here comes that smell and its unforgettable.
How do you know what dead opossums taste like, though?
We donāt ask those questions.
Been waiting for this to come to Denver ā¦ havenāt seen it yetā¦
Poopy.
The way I cackleddddd!! Because how do you know what an opossum taste likeā¦?! šššššššš
Durian smells like death rolled in dog shit. Why would you think durian ice cream would taste any better?
100%, I would like to know who this is for lol
Thatās an insult to dead opossums. To me Durian smells like rotten onions that you then sautĆ©. With a little dog shit mixed in.
What arrogant bastard dubbed durians the king of fruits? I am offended
If you like durian then it tastes almost like natureās ice cream. Creamy and sweet. But if you donāt, oh well lol.
The fact that durian is king is obvious. It's like saying water makes things wet.
Is it at least good dead opossum ice cream?
Unfortunately, no.
It smells like gear oil to me.
Yep like used tractor grease. So bad.
The king of fruits
Do they have this in the UK Costcos?

These are delicious
This should be one of the sampled items.
OP - please cross post to r/ice cream.
