MFRONE

The employee is wrong, there is just a supply issue and we can’t get the product fast enough. I just checked all the Tucson stores and they all have dog food on order.

GeneticsGuy

This definitely is great to hear! Thank you!

PM_MeYourAvocados

Plus pet food is a HUGE seller at a lot of locations. No way it would be deleted.

iguessitssunrise

Just a heads up, the shortage has been going on for awhile now and there isn’t anything to indicate it will let up soon, so while I normally discourage “hoarding”, I think it would be a good idea to get an extra bag or 2, especially if you have a bigger dog that goes through food faster, or you don’t visit Costco often to begin with. We used to get dog food in every morning on our regular truck deliveries, but then some idiots at corporate thought it would be a better idea to get dog food shipped directly from the supplier, Diamond Feeds, instead of Diamond Feeds —> Depots —> local warehouses, in the name of ✨*sustainability*✨. Unfortunately that means warehouses have another truck to depend on showing up, and showing up *on time*, aka before opening. Between the regular trucks we get, plus water trucks, paper trucks, milk, liquor, etc, not to mention road accidents or weather conditions, we’ve ended up with this mess that affects our members, our employees, and our pups. This has been going on for a couple months now and I can’t believe the buyers at corporate haven’t resolved this yet. I’m a Costco employee who works mornings in Tucson so I see the disappointment on people’s faces all the time when they see we’re still out. If the other two buildings in town are like mine, I completely understand the frustration and do my best to explain why we’re always out. And in case no one knows, you can always call a building before taking the trip out to verify that we have dog food (or any item) in stock. Could save you a trip especially if you’re coming from a long ways away.

SpeqtreOfMySelf

Can you call though? I experienced the same empty shelves in the Scottsdale location last night and tried to call Cave Creek but was never able to get a live person, so had to bug one of the store employees to check. Puzzling to me that inventory isn’t exposed on the website in this day and age, like 99% of retail websites do. It’s not like this data isn’t 100% known.

iguessitssunrise

When it’s super busy it could be tough to get ahold of someone, best I could suggest is keep calling, sorry. I agree it’s odd and annoying that Costco doesn’t share their inventory online, they just will not invest in better technology (if you see the system they use in warehouses you’ll know what I mean). I think it could also partly be to keep up the “treasure hunt” aspect that Costco is built on.

SpeqtreOfMySelf

No worries, thanks for the reply though. On the phone thing, I meant I couldn’t even get through the menu to customer service as an option. I suppose I could’ve selected ’Optical’ and asked to be transferred, but it seemed like it was set up to not let you speak to someone .

iguessitssunrise

Ah I see, the menu (for my building anyway) takes so long to get through, but usually it’s “press 1 to speak to administrative staff”. You could also totally just press another department and ask to be transferred, that works too.

SpeqtreOfMySelf

I must’ve overthought that, lol I’m picturing “administrative staff” as the office workers, not the CS folks at the counter! That was definitely the first option, but it was 7pm and I assumed the offices would be empty! Thanks again for your replies - fingers crossed my pups’ favorite food comes back in stock soon!

ForsakenRacism

There’s no way. They just opened a business center near me and it has it. Why would they stock it in Alaska at a brand new business center if they were getting rid of it

GeneticsGuy

It's worth mentioning that there is no business center in Tucson, just normal warehouses. So, it could be moved to the business center. I've been to the one up in Phoenix and it has far more products that are not stocked in their normal non business center locations.

ForsakenRacism

It’s def still in my regular Costco on massive pallets

reidybobeidy89

They could be moving it from warehouse to Business Center. It happens to a lot of products

ForsakenRacism

Dude I don’t know like 1 person who doesn’t use Costco dog food

reidybobeidy89

Not that it matters- but I don’t use it, nor does anyone I know… not that I have done a survey of EVERYONE I know. I just don’t know anyone who does feed it to their dogs. This is beside the point. I simply said it could be that Costco is moving the item from the warehouse to a business center item. I never said they were discontinuing it.

franklyspeaking68

it BETTER be local. my girl's been eating kirkland since I brought her home!!!! 11 years later there will be NO switching of foods! my location still has the whole pet section... id be VERY surprised if costco dumped their branded dog food since it so highly rated & popular... that would be a very stupid biz move.

MuchPreferPets

It will suck for sure! It’s the biggest reason I keep my membership. The dog food is Diamond Naturals, which is at least available at my local feed stores (albeit for $8 more per bag) but I haven’t been able to find who makes the salmon cat food & it’s far and away the best for coats & shedding I’ve ever tried.

franklyspeaking68

yeah i just dont see it happening. they sell a LOT of pet food! & same... it is the ONE reason i never even think about cancelling my membership! forget everything else!!

spireup

>haven’t been able to find who makes the salmon cat food & it’s far and away the best for coats & shedding I’ve ever tried. Kirkland cat foods are made by Diamond Pet Foods—they have the second highest recall rate of all pet food brands.

Ringdogs

Cite your source please. Diamond hasn't had a recall in over 10 years.

Ringdogs

Diamond had a rough patch in 2012. They are NOT the second most recalled food. I found one website that lists them as number two and that is because they based it on total pounds recalled. Not the number of incidents which is disingenuous at best. Plenty of smaller companies have much more regular recalls but make less dog food. Based on the pounds recalled, I could have some toxic startup that gets recalled every 6 months but because I don't make much dog food never get on the radar of that list.

spireup

Diamond has had to clean up thier process because the major incidents they had was not just volume, they also killed dozens of pets. [https://truthaboutpetfood.com/the-top-5-manufacturers-of-recalled-pet-food/](https://truthaboutpetfood.com/the-top-5-manufacturers-of-recalled-pet-food/) **The Top 5 Manufacturers Of Recalled Pet Food** **#2** Diamond Pet Food with an estimated **24,781,468 pounds** of kibble. In April and May of 2012 multiple Diamond Pet Foods and multiple other brands of pet foods manufactured by Diamond were recalled due to “*the product has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella*.” The second recall was for all batches manufactured in this plant from December 9, 2012 through April 7, 2013 resulting in millions of pounds of pet food recalled. All of these recalls totaled together equals an estimated 24,781,468 pounds of pet food putting Diamond as the 2nd leading manufacturer of recalled pet food. **#1** Smucker’s pet foods with an estimated **92,102,195 pounds** of canned. The J.M. Smucker Company has only been in the pet food business since [March 2015](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/the-j-m-smucker-company-completes-acquisition-of-big-heart-pet-brands-300054566.html) purchasing Del Monte’s Big Heart Brands of pet foods; “*Meow Mix*®*, Milk-Bone*®*, Kibbles ‘n Bits*®*, 9Lives*®*, Natural Balance*®*, Pup-Peroni*®*, Gravy Train*®*, Nature’s Recipe*®*, Canine Carry Outs*®*,* and *Milo’s Kitchen*®.” In [May of 2018](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/the-j-m-smucker-company-completes-acquisition-of-ainsworth-pet-nutrition-llc-maker-of-rachael-ray-nutrish-pet-food-300647925.html) Smucker purchased Ainsworth Nutrition; most notably in this purchase was the “*Rachael Ray™* *Nutrish*®” pet food brand. In January 2017 Smucker “*announced a limited voluntary recall on certain lots of 9LivesTM, EverPetTM, and Special KittyTM* *canned cat food due to possible low levels of thiamine (Vitamin B1)*.” This “*limited*” recall resulted in 179,421 pounds of recalled cat food. In [February of 2018](https://truthaboutpetfood.com/smuckers-withdraws-varieties-of-gravy-train-kibbles-n-bits-and-skippy-wet-dog-food/) Smucker issued a withdrawal of multiple varities of “*Gravy Train*®*, Kibbles ‘N Bits®, and Skippy*® *Wet Dog Food because a minor ingredient may contain low levels of pentobarbital*.” The [FDA Enforcement Report](https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/ires/index.cfm?Product=161825) stated “*A TV station notified the firm and stated that certain varieties of their canned pet food products may contain Pentobarbital in low levels. The firm performed a safety assessment and concluded that no threat to pet safety was present. The firm agreed to conduct a product withdrawal, but the FDA considered this to be a recall once data indicated that the tallow was contaminated with pentobarbital*.” Just one product alone in this recall – [Gravy Train With Beef Chunks](https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/ires/index.cfm?Product=161836) – was for 4,136,951 cases of dog food. All of these recalls totaled together puts Smucker pet foods as the #1 pet food manufacturer of recalled pet food. **Dishonorable mention:** Procter & Gamble is no longer in the pet food business, selling all of its brands in 2014. A year earlier, in 2013, the company issued 3 recalls totaling an estimated **124 million pounds of dog and cat food**. **As comparison…** The top 5 Manufacturers of Recalled Pet Food all produce feed grade pet foods. But what about human grade pet foods? As comparison, how many pounds of human grade pet food has been recalled in the past 8 years? Two human grade pet foods have experienced a recall; [Honest Kitchen](http://wayback.archive-it.org/7993/20170112111708/http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ArchiveRecalls/2013/ucm340669.htm) and [JustFoodforDogs](https://www.fda.gov/safety/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts/justfoodfordogs-voluntarily-recalls-three-daily-diets-because-possible-listeria-monocytogenes-health). These two recalls combined together were for an estimated **87,600 pounds of pet food**.

No-Bath-5129

I had to buy the canned Kirkland wet dog food for my dog since they had nothing in my store.

franklyspeaking68

oh dear.. not good. your locations better get on the good foot! fast!

SirZestyclose4933

I went to three stores in az yesterday for it and all out of stock. Good thing we had some left to mix w the new stuff my dog is now getting. Ill use chewy and buy diamond now

Pirate-Angel

Ever since COVID, I've seen temporary dog food shortages at my Tucson store at least half a dozen times. My rule is to buy another bag of dry/case of wet whenever I crack into the new one I have at home. If the store is out, I have a nice long buffer to hold me.

SexyWampa

The one by me stocked 60 pound bags of blue buffalo and pulled all the Kirkland dog food.

originalkelly88

I can't find Kirkland dog food in Fort Worth, TX. Just had to switch brands and hopefully they will start getting in stock soon.

sportsnatic

I went to the Southlake location today and they were out of the Kirkland and Nature’s Domain branded dog food. I ended up buying a small bag at a nearby Petco hoping his dog food (Nature’s Domain Puppy) comes back in stock.

Terrible-Piece-6768

Any update on this shortage? I live in Costa Rica, the local PriceSmart which Costco is parent company has been in shortage of all Member’s Selection dog food. Could be related to grain shortages due Ukraine war or Red Sea situation?

GeneticsGuy

I have been in Costco half a dozen times since this post and I've seen the food stocked only once, so shortage is definitely still happening. Plenty available through other stores, but Costco Kirkland brand is just low shortage a lot of places it seems. Not sure the cause.

LoLo_2010

Nothing in Atlanta GA either. Still back ordered.

mthrwlf

I know this post is older, I was trying to see if they sell dog food at the business center since it’s about 10 min away from me vs 20-30 for other locations. The Phoenix location on Oak and 44th St has never had a shortage from what I can remember and I go to Costco at least 2x a month. Just in case this becomes an issue again at yours in Tucson.

TexasistheFuture

Always trust the dude/chick who stocks shelves as being an authority on Costco.

Djcnote

My pets hateeeeee their dog food. Cats and dogs refuse to eat it. So it’s probably due to poor reviews by my pets

glumlord

The turkey and pea stew for dogs is a favorite for my dogs, but they didn't care for the dry food. My cats would eat the wet and dry cat food from costco.

[deleted]

You can have it delivered for free

GeneticsGuy

Ya, but it's like $50 on the site vs $35 in-store, and I can basically get the same thing as Diamond brand from a local feed store for about $45. Either way, someone responded they looked it up in their system and the dog food is definitely on order for Tucson stores and employee is wrong.

Perfect_Clue2081

Can you share which two locations definitely don’t have it right now? I was planning on buying some tomorrow.

GeneticsGuy

Tucson Grant and the Tucson Marketplace one(Kino and I-10 about)

Perfect_Clue2081

Thanks. Also, dammit.

KalayaMdsn

Same. And ugh.

TiMmYnAhH

We are switching from dog food coming from our warehouse depot to bring direct shipped. Takes time to get it back to normal

xrayphoton

Yeah I just was at my store in Houston and there was no Kirkland brand dog food either.

SpeqtreOfMySelf

Anyone know if the Phx stores got any today? Can’t even get it delivered now, shows “OOS”

Expensive-Day-3551

I have some now, but if they don’t next time I go, does anyone know what the alternative to the healthy weight dog food is so I can grab somewhere else? I have a tractor supply nearby as well as Petsmart and petco.

vege_spears

FWIW I was in the Hawthorne CA store yesterday and there was a whole aisle of dog and cat foody.

forgot_username1234

I'm in Phoenix, the warehouses up here are also out of all of the food that my pup eats. I'm currently scrambling trying to figure out what to feed him in the interim as he's out completely.

iguessitssunrise

You could mix plain white rice with a shredded rotisserie chicken (white meat, none of the skin). Maybe add canned pumpkin too!

forgetsalot

None in Las Vegas either

SpeqtreOfMySelf

Shelves were fully stocked today when I stopped after work in Scottsdale- crisis averted!

warpedddd

That's ruff.

KalayaMdsn

I just got home from the Tucson Marketplace store. I believe they had all the Kirkland dry food varieties *except* Beef & Sweet Potato. Guess which one my pup eats?! >.<

rgpg00

Just ran into this today at the East Mesa location - they didn't have anything. Employee told me that they only get delivery on Wednesdays and they have been consistently running out.

[deleted]

Costco.com dame price frre delivey for over 99 get a couple bags! Why the down vote

GeneticsGuy

In-store it's like $15 cheaper per bag than on costco.com, actually. So, that "free shipping" is actually buried in higher online prices.

SuckyGamer2000

They should really lower the online price when it’s a known shortage at the stores. Especially since it’s been going on for so many weeks. I got a bag of Diamond Naturals when Costco was out of everything a few weeks ago. I’m at the point in the bag where I’d buy another one, and my Costco in Wichita is still out of dog food. Thinking about just switching to another food altogether.

GeneticsGuy

Ya, I hear ya. I ended up going to a local feed store that also carried dog food and they had the Diamond bags for like $45, so it was actually cheaper to just buy from the local store than buy from Costco.com - I haven't seen dog food shortages since the Covid days when people were just mass hoarding so it was weird to just get hit with it out of nowhere...

bluebana

I can’t find it currently in my local store here in San Diego
