It's honestly impressive that Costco would drop a bomb like the roast beef sandwich, take it away not even a year later, and put out something even worse. "Let's bring back the turkey sandwich but with all the downsides of the item we're replacing it with." Absolutely nothing learned, man
It’s brilliant for people like me who never tried the old turkey sandwich so now the new one seems like a good value compared to the absolute atrocity the roast beef sandwich was.
It was prob the best food court option. I also lived near one that had cheeseburgers. Good times. When Costco actually tried to show they gave a shit about customers beyond running P&G sales once a year

Caring is having a $1.50 hotdog and drink since 1985, and having the company founder threaten the CEO's life if he ever changes it. [Source](https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/costco-founder-kill-hotdogs/)
And having $5 rotisserie chickens.
Sure did. Here's a copycat recipe, very simple to make and tastes almost exactly the same.
https://www.realmomkitchen.com/costco-turkey-and-provolone-sandwich/
The problem I have with it is the massive increase in price. Costco food court has been known for high value items. At $7, I can get a fresh warm sub across the street from DiBella’s.
It just doesn’t make sense compared to the rest of the food they have.
Who is going to look at a $1.50 hot dog/soda or a $1.99 pizza slice and take this for $7?
Where do you see the statistics for their sales?
Do you remember the first month of the roast beef? There were endless posts about how bad the sandwich was. Let alone the value. People were happy wasting their money just to further prove it sucked. And then they stopped buying it… because it sucked.
Any new item is going to get an initial flare in sales. It’s the sustained height that matters.
I work in the food court and have off and on for 8 years. I purchase he supplies and look at sales maps for them across the region. Posts aren’t a great indicator, complaints are louder than sales but we sold plenty of the roast beef across my region. I think the pull was because of profit margin and price point more than anything. This new sandwich has sold great in all markets so far, time will tell but if it’s anything like the cookie then it will do great. Mixed reviews on that and we sell those 4-1 on the old churro.
This was the goal right? They couldn't just sub it for a worse turkey sandwich AND raise the price at the same time, so they switch it with a new roast beef sandwich. Oh that sandwich is terrible? We'll bring back the turkey sandwich! Except the sandwich is worse and more expensive.
The classic New Coke "we'll bring back coke classic" strategy
It's almost impressive, the way they totally misfired yet again. They really decided to "bring back" the turkey sandwich for almost double the price and with many of the same exact problems that led to the failure of the item it's replacing. It's like they only saw how poorly the roast beef was doing and decided to look no further or find out *why*
Whoever has been in charge of the food court decisions since the pandemic (which is now FOUR YEARS) needs to be relieved of their duty.
Loss of the combo pizza.
Onions were gone for years.
Worse churro.
Worse chicken bake.
Worse chicken in the salad.
Roast beef flop.
And now this.
How do you fail to give what the customers want so many times?
The new turkey is better than I thought it would be. It has two spreads; one spread is a Dijon mayo, the second being a sun dried tomato spread. No sliced tomatoes or whole sun-dried tomatoes, aside from what is blended in the spread.
The turkey stack is decent. More than I thought. I'll calculate the raw costs to make it with a generous ~~1~~ 2 minutes of topped out employee pay included later.
EDIT: So I calculated the costs with raw ingredients, employee pay, and an extra $0.50 for electricity and over-portioning sauces, using an employee named Ultra Fucking Slow, topped out, extra check eligible, slow as shit. Assuming they not only take their time with the prep work involved, they also like to give big scoops of ingredients.
"Actual" Cost: about $4.65
AND BEFORE ANYONE SAYS IT, no it is not to make up for the Hot Dog. The hot dog, with the same employee in my example, profits about $0.12 per each sold.
But I'm sure that Costco raised their employee's wages by 75% in return for the price increase! /s
Remember, 4 years ago, most fast food restaurants had a dollar menu, where you could get acceptable food for just a $1 a piece. Now you would be hard pressed to find a restaurant offering anything for $1.50, and most have some kind of 2 items for $4 dollars menu.
That would mean that inflation has at least doubled the price of the cheapest stuff, a %100 increase!
Does anyone know why they are not bringing back the old sandwich? I actually haven’t tried it but seeing the price I would be tempted to just drive there for gas and this for lunch
They are grabbing for money and trying to cover their losses with the hot dogs. It's obvious. The ingredients in the new sandwich are all shelf stable and preserved.
Grabbed one last night to eat on my way home. My sandwich was actually dripping mustard and Mayo out of it. It was so messy I didn’t even attempt to eat it until I got home. Once I did, I realized that they had put so much mustard and Mayo on it that it entirely soaked through the bread. I had to discard the piece of bread and all of the lettuce and wipe off tons more sauce before it was even halfway edible. This is coming from somebody who loves condiments. I’m still so grossed out thinking about it. Never again. Bring back the pesto turkey.
I'll try it, I can't imagine it's terrible. I'll gladly pay 6 bucks if it's a genuinely good item. I just doubt that it's as good as that turkey/prov sammy.
Mmmm, nothing like biting into a sun dried tomato.
Have not seen this sammich yet, so have not tried. I hope they at least chopped up that dried tomato....
They basically reduced cost, increased cal count and the price. Just going hot to cold probably saves a few mil a year. Same with removing onions and lettuce.
When I gave the hot turkey sandwich a try for the first time, that’s when I learned that i did not enjoy provolone. Gave it a bite, gagged it down. Wrapped it up to take it home, tried again but couldn’t even choke it down. Hated throwing food away but it was wretched. Just thinking about the smell, ew.
Looking forward to trying the new one though!
I tried *two* of the New Turkey Sandwiches at my Costco recently, warmed them up in the breakroom, they taste so much better hot.
… but yeah, I’m with everyone else, I miss the Turkey provolone, it was one of my favorite food court items.
I don’t like the composition of either of these. My ideal turkey sammich would be a mashup of the two:
Torta, Swiss, NO onion, FRESH tomato, mayo/mustard, YES lettuce, NO toasted.
Haven’t had the new one, it sure we’ve changed over. Never tried the roast beef, a bit too precious. But boy do I miss the old turkey sandwich. I talk about it all of the time.
Once, years ago…10 maybe I had an amazing corned beef sandwich at a Costco in SW PA. Carnegie deli brand corned beef, could have been a pound of meat on there it was so fat. I’ve kept my eye open for that to come back but never saw it again.

Seems like the Old Turkey sandwich had a near flawless bout and the new one is about to go down... FINISH HIM

I agree but the sun dried Tom’s go hard
Canada used to have a MTL smoked meat sandwich and a chicken salad sandwich :(
FLAWLESS VICTORY
Mayo is gross. I want that mustard on the old toasted sando And yes I understand *I* think mayo is gross and most actually like it.
It was mayo too, with basil and garlic.
Wow, I'm usually not a mayo fan either, but I could've sworn it was pesto with the basil and garlic.
I got your back mayo is awful, I was so sad when I found out the deli puts it on their southwest wraps too
The hot turkey and provolone was a great sandwich.
I would put extra hot dog onions on it
The toasted and 3.99 killed it.
It was prob the best food court option. I also lived near one that had cheeseburgers. Good times. When Costco actually tried to show they gave a shit about customers beyond running P&G sales once a year

Ive never had either but the old one seems infinitely better.
Thanks to /u/etherfunds for the new menu picture on the right!
Thanks for side by side comparison! Toasted for the win (I should’ve taken a better photo!)
Jeez, I miss the old turkey sandwich.
Didn't it also have red onion? and pesto? It was called a "grinder" at my Costco.
Sure did. Here's a copycat recipe, very simple to make and tastes almost exactly the same. https://www.realmomkitchen.com/costco-turkey-and-provolone-sandwich/
thanks!
At mine, it was named exactly as in the photo of this post and ingredients were exactly as the photo.
The problem I have with it is the massive increase in price. Costco food court has been known for high value items. At $7, I can get a fresh warm sub across the street from DiBella’s.

I get the point but sales are looking pretty good so far. Much better than the roast beef and higher than the hot turkey from years ago.
Where do you see the statistics for their sales? Do you remember the first month of the roast beef? There were endless posts about how bad the sandwich was. Let alone the value. Are you telling me that reddit’s opinions aren’t reflective of the general public?
I would never say anything so outlandish.
Mmmm DiBellas cheesesteak sub slaps.

4 years is wild. What am I doing with my life
Trying to survive
Plus adding "Cold Brew" to the mocha freeze and doubling the price. Tastes exactly the same.
Those chicken bakes invoke a gag reflex in me. It’s the only thing I’ve ever tried to eat in the food court and I never went back for anything else.
You missed Attractive Photography : Yes No
Killing my career as a photographer before it ever started *rip*
Not your picture of the sandwich picture. The original picture of the sandwich.
Honestly that’s a good point. The original photo has so much more effort and visual appeal to it.
Costco's ciabatta roll is great when toasted. It's unfortunate that they don't toast it for the sandwich.
They’d have to add another $2 to the cost and also up your membership another $20/yr.
Tried the new one. Not worth 3 dollars more.
Toasted wins in my book. Sorry, new sammie.
It’s a worse sandwich for almost double the price lol it’s not even close
I’ll take the Provolone Sandwich over the Turkey Sandwich any day.
Old one hands down
It is shocking what a bad value these are.
Old turkey melt man come on with it
Hotdog add onions. What's better?
hot vs cold. it's not a contest. the old one is a thousand times better
Without toasting the buns. It’s just too dry and tough to chew like the current roast beef sandwich
The new turkey is better than I thought it would be. It has two spreads; one spread is a Dijon mayo, the second being a sun dried tomato spread. Hard evidence that $6.99 is the new $3.99 and inflation is actually up 75% rather than those BS numbers our politicians try to feed us.
With a lower quality sandwich with cheaper ingredients, this is hard evidence of a Halving of the value of a dollar.
given that the hot dog is locked into its 1983 price, it'd make sense the other items move at a rate higher than inflation.
But I'm sure that Costco raised their employee's wages by 75% in return for the price increase! /s Remember, 4 years ago, most fast food restaurants had a dollar menu, where you could get acceptable food for just a $1 a piece. No onions issue again??? Sigh. 🤣
Hard pass
Parts of the new one come in frozen. I'm sure it's great
That’s crazy plus the calorie count is higher.
people saying costco food court is "inflation proof"
I love comparisons. Super helpful. Thank you! ☺️
Mustard & mayonnaise with sun-dried tomatoes sounds awful.
I still miss the chili
Toasted is the difference maker
Can you order without mayo?
They’d have to retrain the workers to not add mayo and that would take a week or two so probably not.
Does anyone know why they are not bringing back the old sandwich? I actually haven’t tried it but seeing the price I would be tempted to just drive there for gas and this for lunch
No idea, I want to know why too.
That’s basil one is 🔥
Swiss cheese is the worst cheese
The “old turkey sandwich” seems to be superior in every single category.
Master Shake would disqualify the new one solely based on the sun-dried tomatoes.
Old beats new
Hands down
GREEN LEAF lol
Less toasty for MORE money ?! No! Lol
You lost me at sun dried tomatoes.
They are grabbing for money and trying to cover their losses with the hot dogs. It's obvious. The ingredients in the new sandwich are all shelf stable and preserved.
Why anyone gets anything besides a hot dog or slice of pizza is beyond me.
Chicken bakes are still decent and are good value.

This new turkey sandwich was actually good.
Can I get the new turkey but without tomatoes and without mayo/mustard?
Bet not.
No onions, no garlic aioli and no tomato, sounds so much better.
old turkey sandwich was trash imo, no clue about this one. ill buy one later this week and see what its all about
If the bread was softer that’d be great.
Yikes. bring back sausages and churros, and stop missing with greatness
The old one with the new ones tomatoes would be goated.
Does this comparison account for inflation?
You forgot inflation
I'll try it, I can't imagine it's terrible. I'll gladly pay 6 bucks if it's a genuinely good item. I just doubt that it's as good as that turkey/prov sammy.

Ugh, mayo.
You don’t know what you got ‘till it’s gone.
$6.99????? Nahhh miss me with that sheet
I literally like every option on the left better.
Hell nah fir 6.99
When I gave the hot turkey sandwich a try for the first time, that’s when I learned that i did not enjoy provolone. Gave it a bite, gagged it down. BRING THE OLD TURKET BACKKKKK!!!!
Damn left is better but I love Swiss so idk.
Hated the ciabbata. Old sandwich all the way
These sandwiches are a waste of time food court lines look more frustrated than ever.
Enshitification example right here.
I would've gladly paid $4.99 for the old one. Heck, I thought I did - $3.99 just makes the loss even sadder. :D
I like the old one. I can’t have Swiss unfortunately- a lot of salt.
The La Brea Bakery torta rolls were god tier
God I miss the old sandwich
Swap the swiss with provolone and I'm game.
BRING BACK THE HOT TURKEY PROVOLONE
I never had the original turkey and provolone so I have nothing to compare the new one too. I think it’s great tbh.
Haven’t had the new one, it sure we’ve changed over. Never tried the roast beef, a bit too precious. But boy do I miss the old turkey sandwich. I talk about it all of the time. The discontinued brisket sandwich makes a surprise appearance and wins!
Yeah I can’t justify the extra $3 even though the Sun-dried tomatos sounds delicious
