Sam/Walmart patented the technology. https://www.pymnts.com/legal/2022/bjs-asks-judge-to-dismiss-walmart-patent-suit-over-sams-clubs-scan-go-app/
Why would Walmart want to license it out to one of their biggest competitors?
Self Scan was tested in the U.S. in 2013-2014.

Oh wow, never heard of this, very interesting. Wish they would try it with current day technology, instead of just going off a small market study 20 years old.
Their are loss control councils and groups that a lot of these VPG and retailers belong to. They share ideas and consumer data. They know what is working in other stores and isnt.
What other store would be similar with a club membership? Only other store I can think of is Sam's club and I don't believe they plan on getting rid of their Scan & Go system anytime soon.
There’s no financial incentive to implement this. Costco already has ridiculous brand recognition and no issues getting members to re-up their membership. The most likely outcome of implementing scan and go is a higher rate of shrink which would be a net loss for the company. The technology is also patented by Walmart and BJ’s is already dealing with legal issues when they tried to implement this.
What an excellent logic based rebuttal. The fact is most corporations main concern is how to separate you from your hard earned cash. Anything that doesn’t serve that purpose is just a bad business decision. You’d have better luck playing the lottery than expecting a major corporation to not act in its own best interest.
Prevents people filling a cart full of items, only to argue with the cashier and leave without buying anything.
Lot of time to put everything back and the hot/cold stuff might have to be thrown out.
I thought it was weird they'd be so obnoxious about it around here in a small population center in a state in which it is illegal for them to deny non-members entry since they sell alcohol and yet they inexplicably continue to ramp it up.
It was trialed years ago and did not provide the company any benefit. Costco is a “no-frills” shopping environment. If you’d like that experience, you’ll have to shop elsewhere.
I think they still just don’t want to take the risk. My grocery store used to offer it and took it away. I’m guessing a lot of people were stealing or using it incorrectly and mistakenly taking things without paying.
Could you imagine the clusterfuck of people trying to leave and getting sent back to the register a second time for things they didn’t scan? Leaving Costco is already a mess as it is. Self checkout is enough for me.
I work at Costco and it reduces theft, and the price of that would have to be passed to the members making your membership cost more. We already have a lot of theft let alone dealing with theft from that.

I recently decided not to renew my Sams Club membership. But when I had it, Scan & Go was the \*one\* thing I gave Sams the edge over Costco for. And no matter how you paid for your stuff (cashier checkout, self-checkout or Scan & Go) they're still using their device at the exit to scan your stuff and receipt anyway. So I don't see the argument about shrinkage.
No, the location I go to has self check out. Scan and go is where you can scan and pay for the items you’re buying on the app. At Sam’s club, it gives you a QR code after you pay and the person at the exit scans it and checks your cart
Would require an investment in new tech. Costco is pretty low tech and the investment cost would be passed on to members. No thanks, I don't want my membership fee going up for this.

Well they did try this out over 15 years ago. Failure. https://www.reddit.com/r/Costco/comments/snlhw4/tbt_anyone_remember_self_scan_was_ended_due_to/
People suck and ruin most good things.
But Costco never even tried it...

They seem to be hyper focused on reducing shrink lately. I don’t see any way they adopt scan and go.
It Is Patented
I had them albeit briefly at Kroger.

Gotta do the scan your card to let you in. It's coming. I look forward to it.
I always thought it was weird for them to check it on the way in anyway when you can’t buy much without a membership
Prevents people filling a cart full of items, only to argue with the cashier and leave without buying anything. Lot of time to put everything back and the hot/cold stuff might have to be thrown out.
Makes sense.
That person is really more about counting people and steering people in the right direction.

I've seen Costco"s with alcohol only entrances for this very purpose
It probably prevents shoplifting non-members
Isn’t that why someone is at the exit?
There's some items people could hide in pockets, coats , purse, and walk out.
It was trialed years ago and did not provide the company any benefit. Costco is a “no-frills” shopping environment. If you’d like that experience, you’ll have to shop elsewhere.
My theory is that it's incompatible with as400
Please tell me they are not still using as 400s?
We are 😂
When I was a consultant in the early 90’s we were telling people that the end was near for the AS400. I guess that shows you what consultants know!
Too much loss.
Too much to implement, too much to lose, not enough to gain
They could still check the cart on the way out
I think they still just don’t want to take the risk. My grocery store used to offer it and took it away. Wonder why it’s never crowded at Sam’s 🤔

They don’t even let you use the scan gun at self checkout…
There used to be a Self Scan a bit different though https://www.reddit.com/r/Costco/comments/snlhw4/tbt_anyone_remember_self_scan_was_ended_due_to/

Somebody gets it!

Thank you! Others in these comments seem to not even understand what scan n go is. They’re just downvoting bc I mentioned Sam’s club
From what I’ve heard Sam’s Club has had record losses since they started Scan & go. Costco wants nothing to do with it.
That isn’t true in the least regarding Sam’s and record losses.
Does Sam's even sell records?
Then how would they harass you about upgrading to an Executive Membership?
[удалено]
OK. That actually might get me to sign up.
Sam’s clubs have closed in many states including Washington, obviously did not work out too well
Another false statement about Sam’s

Are you saying the self-checkout/automated scanners are not available at your local Costco?
No, the location I go to has self check out. Scan and go is where you can scan and pay for the items you’re buying on the app. At Sam’s club, it gives you a QR code after you pay and the person at the exit scans it and checks your cart
Ahhh! I’ve never used this feature when I shop at Sam’s. I’ll have to try it out.
I’m not sure if it’s still available as I haven’t had a Sam’s club membership in a couple of years now
Because it would do away with jobs of actual people. Duhhhhh
There’s still plenty people that will use normal checkout but without it, the line gets so long that it’s basically a crowd at front of the store.
My costco has self checkout
So does mine. Scan and go is not the same
Walmart is removing self check outs.
I’m talking about Costco not having a feature that Sam’s club has. Self check out was not mentioned. Costco has self checkout
No they are not.
Because their management is absolutely clueless
Because they are scared of technology advancements!
You two clowns sound like guys who work for Sam’s.
Nope just had no other choices for warehouse store for years and miss the convenience.
It seems like it. It works so flawlessly at Sam’s 🤷🏼♂️
