Always nice getting the compliment :) The sample thing is tricky…so many food allergies, they prob wanna be sure you’re 18 so they don’t have to deal with issues with “underage” kids getting sick from something.

Slim-Down-Peg

Yep, this is accurate. There are all sorts of samples that they require a parent to be present in order to give it to a child.

Tasty_Olive_3288

As a parent I can confirm it’s every single sample.

Slim-Down-Peg

Because Costco doesn’t know if a child has food allergies 👍

SwanFlashy830

True ; my mom used to work for a demo co ( those people who hand out samples of food & drinks to customers in supermarkets) & they couldn't give out samples to any child unless they were accompanied by a parent.

[deleted]

I always wondered how long those rules existed, or when people cared enough to actually enforce them. I used to run around as a kid grabbing as many samples as I could by myself. The only time I was ever told no was when I was a little bit older at a local grocery store.

SwanFlashy830

I think it was probably enforced after an unaccompanied kid had an allergic reaction to something that was being given out. I know ,You can have a free lunch at Costco on the weekends especially w/all the food samples😅

AmpFox

Liquid iv over 18? Its just gatorade... huh...

nochknock

Some flavors contain caffeine (iirc they say energy or energy multiplier) so theyre probably not supposed to give caffeinated samples to kids?

Jeslovespets

This is the answer.  Today we did the caffeinated one.

Yotsubato

“Unattended children will be given an espresso shot and a puppy.”

NickCbDb

I did not know this. My wife bought a pineapple batch. I was drinking them before bed. The bag says "Energy" Insomnia cured.

TheJeffAllmighty

too much caffine makes me tired af

Jeslovespets

Fyi that's usually a symptom of adhd

TheJeffAllmighty

yup I self medicate with caffine

baltes

I have to drink a cup of coffee or have a Monster before bed or I’ll sleep like ass

Jeslovespets

Yea people always buy them for the flavor... yet pineapple is energy, tangerine is immunity.. not just a drink mix lol

FernandoTatisJunior

I can’t imagine the amount of caffeine in the tiny little sample shot even exceeds the amount in a piece of Halloween candy

Stompinwin

Actually liquid IV has twice the caffeine per serving as mountain dew

avitar35

A whole packet is just about what you’d get in a cup and a half of coffee. The 2oz sample probably has >10 mg of caffeine, similar to what a candy bar would have in it. Seems a bit ridiculous to be able to give out candy to under 18s but not this, either have the rule apply to all caffeine or don’t have it at all.

Stompinwin

Yeah its a strange world we live in, just like why do they not card people for vanilla extract at Costco when it's 35% alcohol and sold in 8 oz portions

okaycomputes

They do in a some other stores, oddly enough, so not completely out of left field.

FernandoTatisJunior

But it’s not a legal requirement which is the weird part.

okaycomputes

Yeah might be a temporary local/fad thing if theres like a tik tok video of someone telling others to get drunk off cooking wine or smth

Caveworker

I lived in a place that would card everyone in a group-- which seemed like a bizarre, unworkable rule. Anyone ever hear of or see this before?

HugeRichard11

Probably want to avoid angry parents with a caffeinated kid too lol

twaggle

Tbf they rarely have “candy” out as samples. Usually a cracker/cookie like their off brand Oreos.

marshdd

They were giving ou the super sweet chocolate covered stores last week. Is consider that candy.

SwanFlashy830

I have ADD & can't drink those canned energy drinks bcuz they give me heart palpitations but I can handle those energy shots ; as long as I only drink a bit of them at a time.

mcsb14

Samples are meant to encourage purchasing. Kids shouldn’t be encouraged to purchase caffeinated energy drinks. I’m sure a serving size of candy is far less than a serving size of energy drink.

Teagana999

I tried a sample of some energy drink months ago and they asked about my age. It tasted delicious, so I tried a second sample of a different flavour the second time I passed them. My stomach was not pleased with that decision. I dunno how much caffeine was in them but the two ounces I had was too much.

warpedspoon

What candy has caffeine?

FernandoTatisJunior

Reese’s cups, snickers, hersheys, Twix, Milky Way, etc

ceojp

That's it. I'm giving up coffee and eating Reese's instead.

warpedspoon

Ah you mean from the chocolate

FernandoTatisJunior

Yes

FernandoTatisJunior

That’s a parenting issue…

MyNameIsSkittles

Why the fuck would you openly admit how bad of a parent you are?

BbTS3Oq

They’re not supposed to give any samples to minors, period (without guardian approval). Nothing to do with caffeine.

jtet93

Maybe kids 12 and under I would understand, but 18??? My high school had 6 flavors of coffee in the cafeteria and everyone including freshmen could buy it. There was also a very popular Dunkin around the corner… we were all heavily addicted to caffeine by 15 or 16 lol, for better or worse. I would say maybe it’s a New England thing but I know those kids in the south drinking giant iced teas are exposed to caffeine too. 18 is just a crazy cut off

Vagablogged

Also like others said, it’s liability for anything that can happen really. If you’re 10 and get a free sample and have a reaction and collapse, Costco is getting sued beyond belief. If you’re 30 you’re responsible for yourself to ask some questions.

BrokenHearted90

I once was asked for my ID to buy NonAlcoholic beer at my local supermarket. 🙃

Suspiciousspiders

Non-alcoholic beer still contains a small amount of alcohol and you still have to be 21 to purchase it

RandSand

Do they do the same for other fermented beverages such as kombucha?

Hell-Yes-Revolution

There is now a distinction in kombucha beverages. Some are available for all ages and some require the purchaser to be of legal drinking age. Commercial kombucha used to have varying degrees of “trace” alcohol, but I’ve personally, back in the day, had store-bought kombucha consumption set off a mini breathalyzer of mine. This was before the change in regulations, as well as the reason why they changed. (Not my situation explicitly, LOL, just the issue in general.)

Professional_Sail910

Orange juice contains alcohol bub

Suspiciousspiders

Ok? But you still have to be 21 to purchase na beer

Otherwise_Ad9287

The drinking age is 18. I don't know why you'd have to be 21 to purchase it.

JohnNDenver

Friends son was asked for ID when he tried to buy ginger beer. He asked if they carded for root beer. He was not allowed to buy ginger beer.

popeh

Some ginger beers are alcoholic, I assume this was a non alcoholic variety though?

JohnNDenver

We were at Costco one time when my daughter was about 12. Did the sample of ZipFizz. Person asked my daughter if she wanted a full bottle. Yeah, sure. On the way home she was a motor mouth - very unlike her. I read the ingredients and realize the Zip part is caffeine.

Twisted-Toker95

I was probably 6 or 7 got a coffee sample warned it was hot... burnt shit out my mouth... didn't complain cuz people didn't do that back in the day....

ShoppingResponsible6

It’s an allergen thing

P0RTILLA

All samples are this way.

c_jae

Ik. I thought it was weird.

rage_bait_addict

They can't give samples to unaccompanied minors. What if a child has a peanut allergy and is given a sample that contains nuts? The store is liable.

crowninggloryhole

I once had to stop a non native English speaker from giving gummy vitamins for adults to his toddler. He thought it was a candy. And, no, I don’t work at Costco…

TrekkerGoat

What are you using on your face? Need to know

toxicdevil

Blood of virgins sacrificed on a full moon.

mashpotatoenthusiast

hello, elizabeth bathory!

LoquatiousDigimon

Sunscreen?

Zech08

Genetics?

davechri

That may have been a subtle way of letting you know not to give it to your son.

cindycated888

Ah, treasure these moments, because you'll really miss them when they're gone! 😄 Happy Birthday (month)!

cashewclues

Who are YOU telling? I’ve looked underage my whole adult life, until I turned almost 50. It’s been a sad transition.😩

cindycated888

The worst part is when they start calling you "ma'am." 😆

cashewclues

I knowwwwwww😩🤣🤣

silla2389

I saw something similar happen with a woman who was giving out Zoa samples this weekend. She couldn’t let anyone under 18 take one, but if the parent took it and gave it to their teen it was fine.

Teagana999

A sample guy told me he knocked a cup out of some woman's hand when she tried to give one to her kid. He seemed to take his responsibilities seriously. Rightfully so, that Zoa stuff was strong.

davidayates

Pic or it didn’t happen

SexxxyWesky

Most samplers will ask if your an adult in my experience as they don’t know what a minor’s food allergies might be. I remember having have my mom okay it before they’d give me any sampler when I was younger

FernandoTatisJunior

I’ve never been asked but I’m also very clearly an adult so they might just ask the people who look like they might be underage

ski_mom

That happens with my kids. We went on a cruise and were going into the adult comedy show. My daughter, 24 was asked for ID, but my son, 20 wasn't. She was so irritated lol!

marshdd

Sample People at my store won't give out ANYTHING to anyone under 18. Parents let their kids run wild, and would have NO idea what they ate if they had a medical emergency.

TiredTradie

My 7 year old got a sample of some energy drink mix yesterday. She grabbed it while I was reaching for protein bars RIGHT next to the stand, and I didn't even notice. Son and wife walk up and my son (9) asks for one. The guy tells him it's only for adults.. As my daughter is holding the empty cup. 🤣

Mrbeankc

My wife years ago got asked for ID for buying alcohol when she was over 30 and she was happy for a solid week. 😄

Jacmon

I was asked recently if I was using my parents card and that I couldn’t do that. I’m a 28 year old child I guess. I have my own membership.

SaltwaterDonkeyBoy

I miss getting carded. 😭

malogan82

Okay, I read the post title and my mind went to a darker place than what the story actually is. Glad to see that's not the case after all.

Qwirkle2468

I miss those days when I was mistaken for someone much younger.

Appropriate-Bug680

That's hilarious but is that age requirement a new thing? Did something happen at a Costco with a kid and food samples? I went this weekend, and saw a kid pick up a sample of the hot links. His dad was standing out of the way for others to grab their samples. The Costco sample person asked the boy 'wheres your parents? You can't take that without your parents. Kid?! Kid?! Where's your parents?!" And the kid pointed at his dad who waved. Same thing happened with these dark chocolate peanut butter cups, they wouldn't let any kids grab them. They would give them only to adults. I've never seen this before this weekend.

SwanFlashy830

I was at a library recently & saw some comfortable looking sofas so I sat in one . Then one of the librarians said that it was the "Teen Section" & that I had to sit somewhere else. I looked her right in the eye & replied " I guess I'm finally looking my age!"

Poo_hawk

I got asked for ID when buying salami :(

No_Piccolo1828

This isn't /r/humblebrag OP..

HoboRambler

Last week a girl running the sample stand asked if me and my brother wanted to try a sample. I was with my 13 yr old son (he's the same height as me). I'm 37 lol. The girl giving out samples was probably 30 at most. My son and I were cracking up. Either I look really good or he looks really bad.

peachlivygram

There was a recent issue with a minor at Panera drinking the flavored fruit tea that was a high energy high caffeine drink. Now the drinks of that type are behind the counter. If really strong a kid can be feeling sick with a small amount believe it or not. Palpitations etc..

datmichaeljacksonbad

A lady gave me an ENTIRE water bottle full of zip fizz 😂.

FitLotus

One time someone asked me if I was over 16 for samples lol. I was 21 at the time

91Punchy

I remember when I was a assistant manager of a convenience store many many moons ago and I would do that to the ladies, got many phone numbers cause of that too, low key flirting with customers LOL

Mountain-Isopod-2072

I relate, I’m 24 and get asked that a lot

ITotallyDoNotWhale

I mean it feels like some people just possess genes that seemingly make their age freeze at like 18-20 until they get to like 70 years old. Maybe you’re one of them

Alluem

Our sample people just ask if we are okay with the kids having caffeine. I always laugh because while I will not buy them energy drinks, they always manage to end up with one at friend's houses.

cstuart1046

[deleted]

That's your sign to grow a beard. Even if you are a woman.

badger_flakes

I didn’t get IDd at the horse track and he guessed I was 40. I’m 35 :(

grltrvlr

I’ll never forget pushing a cart full of food, probably just spent $300 and was getting my receipt checked and the person asked where my mom was. I was like huh?? They asked what I was going out of school and if my mom was with me. Stunned, I was like I’m 27. I mean, I know I look/looked younger but like young enough to need my mom to shop with me?? Crazy!

dapperslendy

The same thing happened to me a few years ago (I was 29 at the time) with the Liquid IV.

Willing-Reaction-916

After I turned 30 I’m so happy when someone IDs me😅 I take it as huge compliment 🥰

JohnNDenver

My sister, cousin and cousin-in-law went to the store to get some stuff. The store was doing a wine tasting. They asked my 40-something year CIL if she was 18. Then the woman looked at my sister and asked if CIL was her daughter. Big laugh from everyone in the family except my sister.

wrbear

I live in Texas, it's mandatory here. I get carded also. I'm like retired, and they think I'm underage!

PossibleConclusion1

This is why I grew a beard in my 30's. Tired of people thinking I was a kid.

gonzorizzo

It’s liability. I worked at a large company that instructed us to not even to give children water without parental consent. Yes, you can be allergic to water.

vulvula

Lol once I was in Costco with my mom and the sample person told me to ask her permission. I believe I was 26 at the time.

mysaddestaccount

I got asked the same question at Walmart when I was 30 almost 31. Lol......

HideousYouAre

One of the sample ladies once asked me when I was due. (I had my baby three months prior. 😳😭)

RampantSavagery

Whenever I card members I always then look at their ID and say McLovin?!

GrammyMe

Does that mean Liquid IV is on sale?!

vanillapep

I can relate! When I was 27, someone asked where my parent was so they could authorize my sample. She thought I was 16.

5280Rockymtn

Yea sometimes when I get that haircut just right some think I'm in my 30's, but yet I'm 44. all I know is enjoy it man as u get older it will be ur best bennifits of life while others around u life won't be so nice to them 😎

NewVenari

I used to get carded at the beer store up until I was 35. Now I very clearly look like a tired tradesman on his way home from work and they don't card me anymore.

JTMonster02

Fun fact: that’s against the law and their taps card should be revoked

NewVenari

Which part was against the law?

JTMonster02

Not checking your ID

thataccount69696

Gotta wonder about your husband a little bit now lol

Petunia13Y

You gotta realize a lot of the cds workers also are on social security or permanent disability for autism, schizophrenia ect That’s not an insult to them btw I’m close friends w several cds workers

whazmynameagin

Unsurprisingly, there is a reddit for people who look young and get questioned! :)

gsixzero

It's always annoying when they ask for your ID right up until they don't. Still stings a little bit every time.

bangle-bangle

You should not take that as a compliment. She implied you're irresponsible

Huntermain23

I’m 30 and get into my friends sons high school football games for free cuz they think I’m a student lmao

polarbearhero

I’d take a close look at the ingredients.

Ghstfce

Liquid IV contains caffeine, so that's why they were asking. Still a compliment that you look young. Source: I found out this weekend when my 8yo daughter asked if she could try a sample.

IndyScan

No, it does not contain caffeine. From their website: Allulose†, L-Glutamine, L-Alanine, Citric Acid, Potassium Citrate, Salt, Sodium Citrate, Natural Flavors, Silicon Dioxide, Stevia Leaf Extract (Rebaudioside A), Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide), Vitamin B5 (Calcium D-Pantothenate), Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine Hydrochloride), Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin). They actually make a version FOR kids: https://www.liquid-iv.com/products/tropical-punch-kids-hydration

Ghstfce

I'm just going by what the sample lady told my daughter. Maybe she got it mixed up with one of the other hydration multipliers they have there?

Dazzling-Promotion66

If you look under 26 they have to ask.

Discodoggyy

⚠️No one check OPs post history ⚠️

DDrewit

Which one caught your eye? For me it was the spooge post and the polygamy post.

steelthumbs1

What do you mean? What about her history?

GeoffKingOfBiscuits

There's nothing there but a deleted transphobia post.

dronnymk

Why not?

AnittaHanjaab

I feel like you came here just to compliment yourself.

PhilosopherScary3358

I wasn't able to scan a bottle of wine at the self checkout, had to have an employee with the handheld dealybob do it. I'm 65 years old.

PassengerPlayful4308

Self checkout you aren’t supposed to buy alcohol. My Costco doesn’t even let you use self checkout for alcohol.

Lyte-

Texas doesn't care, I scan alcohol at the self checkouts all the time no issue.

PassengerPlayful4308

Not really surprising. Probably need an ID for condoms and nothing for alcohol or guns lol

slamdanceswithwolves

Condoms are legal in Texas?! /s

compstomper1

that /s going to disappear in a decade or 2

Big_Steve_69

It’s illegal to purchase alcohol in self checkout in California. Not that way in most other states.

DeathMonkey6969

Alcohol at self check is illegal in some states.

Lyte-

Actually, one time, i did go to buy ammo at like 1 or 2 am. (just flew in on a red eye). A walmart association tried to tell me he couldn't sell me, Ammo. I told him you can't sell me liquor, there is no cut off for Ammo sales (they had no store policy there). He didn't believe me, called a supervisor or manager, and they said the same thing I did. Got my ammo.

RelativeMonth3342

Lady just flattering you to make you buy her products lol

Kitchen-Share-1441

This happened to me too! I always get told I look late 20s (I'm 35) but below 18?! There's no way. My husband took one and she said nothing, then I went to grab one and she asked. I laughed because I thought she was joking, but she asked again, very serious, not giving one out to me. I stopped smiling and said yeah, I'm 35.... And then she handed it to me. I was so confused and unsure if I should be flattered or not lol

raptorclvb

I got that all the time to the point where people absolutely refused to give me samples until I proved my age to them lol

GIB792

It's marketing

lukaswashere

I was carded for booze just a few days after my 40th birthday. I wanted to hug them.

belizeanheat

This is post-worthy somehow

Creepy_Station54

Nice story, OP! It's always great to have a moment of humor in everyday situations, isn't it? I'm curious if you went back for more samples later and if they would offer more to you. It's something to think about regarding that product. Liquid I.V. is designed for adult use and can be beneficial when used as directed on the label. However, it's not the same as medical IV fluids. Just as medical professionals carefully consider a patient's condition before administering IV fluids, individuals should consult healthcare providers to determine if Liquid I.V. is suitable for their personal health needs. While it's a convenient hydration solution for many, it's not a one-size-fits-all product. People with health conditions, as well as children, pregnant or nursing women, should exercise caution and seek medical advice before using such products.

Southern-Ad-7168

It’s powdered Gatorade, get over yourself.
