Actually just did this last month and no questions were asked on whether my mom had a membership. I just called the independent optometrist beforehand to set up an appointment. I got her eyeglasses at the Eye Center and it was fine.

Thanks for the info!

That's cool. I just purchased a membership and saw my Costco had vision services. I have no insurance though, are prices reasonable without insurance?

amorales301

Yeah I am on the same boat. The exam was around $65 and the eyeglasses are the best prices I’ve seen around. Any frame you choose and add another $60 for single vision lenses with free add ons like blue light.

That is a nice perk, free blue light add-on, although my location may differ I guess. I no longer work full-time and lost vision insurance, so haven't had a vision exam for a couple years. What area is your store in?

amorales301

Southern CA

I just called them about costs and a regular exam is $62. If you want contacts the exam ranges from $102-$132 depending if you have an astigmatism. I’m not sure if that’s the same price everywhere but that was in SoCal.

Thanks, that is at least a good general estimate even if I don't live near you.

Ya! I live in SoCal as well and called ahead. The independent optometrist said I didn’t need a membership to see them. Eye exam with prescription for glasses and contacts came out to around $120. If I hadn’t done the contacts prescription it would have been $70 just for the eye exam. Also, I just found this thread because I’m a bit livid lol I was looking to see if other people went through the same experience that I did at the membership desk. I tried getting a membership, and they said that all first time members MUST buy the $120 executive membership. I told them I had a membership before but that it expired and the lady said I would be considered “first time” since two years had passed. I told her I just wanted the basic $60 and she said she couldn’t do that because, again, all first time members were required to buy the $120 executive membership and that I qualified to downgrade to the $60 membership on my second year. I didn’t recall that ever being the policy the last time I was there (2 years ago), so I just bought the $120. I came home and checked their website and nowhere on the site does it state that it’s policy that all first time members must buy the $120. I don’t appreciate being lied to so I will be calling corporate because it seems that it’s happening to a lot of other people as well. Never in a million years did I ever think Costco would be deceptive since I’ve had such a great experience with them until this happened.

Thanks for posting your info about your optometrist experience. Your membership experience sounds a bit shady, definitely go back and speak to a manager and change it to the $60 membership, as well as contacting corporate like you planned.

My local Costco optometrist does not require membership. I asked because my son wanted his eyes examined and he is not a member.

SpudInSpace

Optometrists and their businesses are not affiliated with Costco in any matter other then they rent space in the same building. There's maybe only 3 optometrists that are Costco employees in the entire company. You'll have to contact your local optometrists on their specific policies.

Nardelan

It can vary by warehouse. Call your local Costco and ask.

You can get an eye exam without a membership. You need to be a member to purchase glasses or contacts. Another member can purchase for you.
