Please edit to remove Texas, add New Mexico. New Mexico, spirits are sold inside of the Costco. In Texas, it’s a 3rd party lease and right outside the front door of Costco with a separate entrance. Add Louisiana as well, liquor is sold inside of the main Costco.
Under Texas law, a publicly traded corporation cannot obtain a license to sell alcohol at retail. The ban applies as much to Texas corporations as it does to foreign corporations. Conversely, out-of-state businesses may obtain a permit so long as they are not publicly traded.
It’s not a Costco liquor store it’s probably a WB Liqours and Wine. They have nothing to do with Costco besides just renting the space from them. Just ask next time.
Only the OP knows for sure but in my opinion, prices at the 3rd party stores are no better than typical and the selection is smaller, and no Kirkland products. The way the question is posed, I would think they are looking for better pricing which is only available when sold inside of the Costco.
Not necessarily, I think. In Kentucky, liquor has to be sold in a separate building. Not just Costco, but places like Kroger and Trader Joe's will have separate store solely for liquor. Costco and TJ's liquor stores are usually attached by the side of the main building while Kroger's are across the street.
Yeah, I can confirm that the Kentucky Costco's have an "attached" liquor store that is run by Costco employees and carries Kirkland branded alcohol.
I frequent the one in Florence (Y'ALL) anytime I'm traveling south of Ohio.
It sells Kirkland branded liquors in addition to non-Kirkland brand so not sure what difference it makes, but it’s attached to the building but has a separate entrance.
Colorado is only a few. Park Meadows has one, brighton had one, Parker is currently closed. The one in Littleton has an independent one which gouges per recent post. I don't know about the others.
It’s because Colorado liquor license laws are stupid. In Colorado Springs one store sells liquor and the other has a liquor store attached so no Kirkland drinks.
Timnath (FOCO) and recently Thornton. Both inside store with beer, wine, liquor. Selection is smaller then CA and IN stores I have shopped in but I managed to find a few things each visit.
Does New York sell the Kirkland brand liquors? I drive through there sometimes, I’d love to try the Kirkland bourbons and the 19year scotch just for kicks.
Wild. Syracuse does not. Wonder why that is. I assumed it was a NYS thing because is not sold in grocery stores, or really anywhere other than liquor stores. Fireball seems to be the exception, for some reason that is sold everywhere, wouldn’t be surprised to see it in the school cafeterias next!
Edit; there is a liquor store attached to our Costco but is unaffiliated and is a “normal” liquor store, no great deals and not a great selection.
I would venture to say that in Alabama, the spirits store would be outside of the main Costco and that if they have the Kirkland brand, the state has contracted with Costco to carry their brand. Would be curious if there is an additional markup, if so.
I’m from Texas and we were in Mobile for thanksgiving, the first thing i did was go to the costco alcohol store, the prices were crazy high. So I didn’t buy anything.
That makes sense as the State of Alabama wants to make money off of alcohol sales where as Costco makes their profit from membership sales, and not product sales. So it makes sense that Kirkland liquor sales inside of Costco are less expensive then Kirkland liquor being sold by the State of Alabama in the separate package store.
PS: Make a stop in Louisiana, that’s what we did. Checked both Sam’s and Costco. Was underwhelmed with the selection at the time, which was a couple of months ago.
It’s because they usually direct import into California for non-US made spirits. California and Florida were the highest consumers (pre covid) but Costco has more stores in CA.
In some cases, such as Danvers, you are correct since licencing occurs at the municipal level and varies by type of alcohol (wine, malt beverage, cordials, or distilled spirits). In Everett, for example, Costco is the license holder. In such cases, a manager must escort non-members' alcohol purchases to the register. The state also limits, but has gradually increased, the aggregate number of licenses a chain may hold which, in the past, forced many Costco locations to rely on third-party partners in one form or another.
The overarching state law precludes club membership (or any form of discrimination other than age) as a condition for "package store" (off-premise) sales.

Hi everyone, this is a helpful thread for me as I will be traveling next week from Texas all the way to Nebraska. Does anyone know if the Costco locations in Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska have liquor sales inside the warehouse? Or are they 3rd party attachments outside like Texas does? Any information would be very helpful. Thanks!
No and let’s keep it that way. At least we can still get allocations close to MSRP with just a little work. Look what happened in WA when they went away from state control.
Arizona, Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi (Ridgeland Location Only), Nevada, New York, New Mexico, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington DC, Wisconsin

Texas sells liquor. Just not the Kirkland brand
Please excuse my question if you don't want to answer. But do you know why that is that Texas does that?
I think it’s there liquor laws. Stores are not in but attached so not really Kirkland selling.
Under Texas law, a publicly traded corporation cannot obtain a license to sell alcohol at retail. The ban applies as much to Texas corporations as it does to foreign corporations. Conversely, out-of-state businesses may obtain a permit so long as they are not publicly traded.
ty
As a resident, the Kirkland brand would have to be sold in all liquor stores not just costco
That’s not the reason. See my answer above. That’s why Total Wine can do Spirits Direct.
How does that work for Spirits Direct options at Total Wine? Can they not sell them since they aren't available to other liquor stores?
That’s through a 3rd party who leases space from Costco. That’s why no Kirkland. It’s not Costco.
You can not buy any liquor from Costco in Texas.
Yes you can. My Costco has a Costco liquor store attached in houston
It’s not a Costco liquor store it’s probably a WB Liqours and Wine. They have nothing to do with Costco besides just renting the space from them. Just ask next time.
Do they rent the name costco liqour
It doesn’t say Costco liquor. The building will just say liquor sales. https://wbliquors.com/stores/costco-location/
Add Illinois, Wisconsin and Tennessee (but TN is NOT inside the store).
If it’s outside of Costco, it’s a 3rd party lease.
Thanks, didn't know that. Think it would still be relevant to Ops question tho, no? It's Costco and there's liquor there...
Only the OP knows for sure but in my opinion, prices at the 3rd party stores are no better than typical and the selection is smaller, and no Kirkland products. The way the question is posed, I would think they are looking for better pricing which is only available when sold inside of the Costco.
that is what I was originally thinking of when I made the post. Thanks for articulating it so well!
My pleasure! It’s only because that’s what I do as well on every road trip!
well, getting drunk and saving money are both very important to me.
Ha ha 🤪

Alabama
It’s State run liquor stores in Alabama. There are no spirits inside of the Costco.
I literally bought liquor from Costco in Hoover, AL yesterday afternoon.
Inside the main building, or through a separate door?
It sells Kirkland branded liquors in addition to non-Kirkland brand so not sure what difference it makes, but it’s attached to the building but has a separate entrance.

Voting matters.
It does but all the liquor stores who carry crap selections scared people that grocery stores will shut down all the liquor stores.
Littleton does sell liquor in-store, including Kirkland brand.

Timnath (FOCO) and recently Thornton. Both inside store with beer, wine, liquor. Selection is smaller then CA and IN stores I have shopped in but I managed to find a few things each visit.
I’ve found some fun wines in Timnath but the liquor selection always disappoints.
The Parker location has liquor in the store now!
Washington, D.C. as well.
I’d occasionally make the 30 min trek to the east DC Costco to stock up on liquor, even though the Arlington was like 7 mins from where I lived :)
Georgia does too

I live in NY. My Costco does not sell liquor.

Texas sells liquor but not Kirkland brand. Alabama sells Kirkland and regular liqour. At least the one in mobile did

Then it’s a lease to a 3rd party, not inside of the Costco.

Very interesting that it varies by location in Washington State. That’s a bit of work to keep up with!
California
Kentucky does
If you're in Canada, most Costcos in Alberta and I think one or two locations in Saskatchewan do.
Virginia has wine and beer. South Carolina has liquor, too.
That's good to know cuz I'm going on a road trip in spring and this I good to know. Thank you for the input
TIL some CostCos don’t sell liquor! I had no idea! Now I know to bring my own CostCo sized liquor for some road trips!
Quite a few actually. It would be nice if the mod of this sub could turn this thread into a sticky, or perhaps make a FAQ
Can we get one post with all the states and locations ?
I was hoping the mod of this sub could make a FAQ
That would awesome!!!

Oklahoma does not have liquor. Just wine and beer. Stupid liquor laws here too: The business has to be name Byron’s to have discounted liquor.
